KGF Open Rules -- Youth

AGE DIVISIONS & BELTS

Belts (ages 4–15): White → Grey → Yellow → Orange → Green (each with plain/white/black stripes).

Ages 16–17 (Juvenile): White → Blue → Purple only — Brown & Black start in the Adult division

(18+/19+). Age = current year minus birth year.

SPECIAL FOUL RULE

White belts, all ages: jumping into closed guard while the opponent is standing is a serious foul.

Referee stops the match and restarts both athletes standing — no points awarded.

PROHIBITED TECHNIQUES — ALL YOUTH (AGES 4–17, ALL BELTS)

Leg attacks: Heel hook, knee bar, toe hold (or outward foot pressure), straight foot lock (and turning

the wrong direction), knee reaping, calf slicer, bicep slicer

Chokes & joint locks: Ezekiel choke, frontal guillotine, arm-triangle, any choke with a spinal lock,

spinal locks without a choke, omoplata, triangle while pulling the head, wrist lock,

rib/kidney-compressing closed-guard locks, submissions that stretch the legs apart

Takedowns & slams: Slams, suplex takedowns (landing on head/neck), scissor takedown, single-leg

takedown with attacker's head outside opponent's body, belt-grab throws to the head

Other: Bending fingers backward

Generally allowed (not on the prohibited list): armbar, kimura, americana, rear naked choke,

cross-collar & lapel chokes, bow-and-arrow choke, and the triangle choke as long as the head

isn't pulled.

Format

• Bracket-style matches, 2 matches planned for each athlete (2nd match will be based on if there's enough time in the event, and likely open-class style or exhibition matches)
• Weight classes may be combined if necessary
• Athletes may receive multiple matches depending on bracket size

This is a learning-focused event, not a points race or ranking competition.

Registration will be completed through Smoothcomp.

Check-In & Schedule

• Event is planned for 9am-3pm
• Athlete will check-in and weigh in between 9am-12pm. Check-in will be closed after 12pm, so please arrive in that window and get checked and weighed in.
• Match times will be published once brackets are finalized

Please arrive early and be ready to compete.

Weigh-Ins

• Same-day weigh-ins
• Gi must be worn for weigh-in
• Athletes must make weight for their registered division

Spectators

Spectators are welcome. Please be respectful of athletes, referees, and staff.

Attendance is on a donation-basis. Any donations will first go toward direct costs for running the event (smoothcomp fees, misc costs, etc.), then go to Kaizen Grappling Foundation, Inc. a federally recognized 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization. All Proceeds from event merchandise sales will go towards providing scholarships to individuals.
