I’ve been to a few BJJ gyms in the Asheville area and this one ended up becoming my home gym. Josh and Dakota are both a wealth of knowledge, communicate incredibly well and the overall environment is friendly. Whether you’re a beginner or someone who competes in bjj, this is the place for you.

Coming into jiu jitsu with zero experience I am so grateful to be apart of an amazing community at Gracie Barra. From my first encounter with the instructors I immediately felt welcomed. The instructors take their time to explain everything from the warm ups to walking me through the technique. The culture of the gym is welcoming, supportive, and accepting. I was intimidated starting jiu jitsu but everyone at Gracie has helped to cultivate my confidence with each class. Very safe space for women to come and train and they offer women’s only classes. Jiu jitsu is not only a fun and challenging art but also highly transferable to real world scenarios where you can apply the skills learned for self defense. I would highly recommend trying out a class with Gracie Barra Asheville if you have been thinking about it!

3 years Training here at GB, Great training partners. I’ve been to multiple martial arts gyms and GB has the Best gym atmosphere. Professor Josh and Coach Dakota are Great Coaches both are Very knowledgeable and open to sharing all their Knowledge. Both have helped me immensely in competitions, they keep me calm and focused on my goals I want to attain.

I have never seen a better team than Josh and Dakota in a Jiu-Jitsu gym.They have helped so many in this community by teaching young children to adults how to protect themselves. I have never seen two people be so hands on and incredible by the patiences and teaching skills they have. And all they r going to do is get even more better. 🙏🏼 Blessed by the power these two have for this community.

I’ve been a student at Gracie Barra Asheville for a little over a year now and it has completely changed my life. The expert instruction from Professor Josh and Coach Dakota is second to none. These men put their whole essence into teaching Jiu Jitsu in the most basic and understandable way possible and always make sure everyone understands the techniques we are learning. These two men are more than just teachers, they are my friends and they do everything they can to make you feel like family and are outstanding role models. Every one of my training partners is very friendly, accepting, supportive, and wants everyone around them to grow. I feel very lucky to be part of such an amazing community who have all collectively built my confidence. Shout out to Dakota for being our rock and single-handedly holding the school together over the course of Josh’s 9 month battle with cancer we cannot thank you enough for keeping spirits high and the enthusiasm strong. Gracie Barra Asheville truly embodies the motto “Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone.” Highly recommend this school to anyone seeking personal growth and team camaraderie.

I love Gracie Barra Asheville! The people who train are amazing and the instructors make it a community. The instructors are respectful, professional, and considerate. Dakota is an AMAZING instructor and person who is respectful, professional, born to teach, fun, and skilled. I recommend coming to this gym because you will never be more respected any where else. You instantly become apart of the community as soon as you walk through the door. Amazing school ran by amazing instructors. Josh is top notch and Dakota is easily the best instructor I have had. My entire family has trained under these two and Dakotas instruction and care for students and their families are second to none. My sons feel safe and respected and expect to train under someone who asks more of them, they cannot get enough of Dakota and how he teaches. Many of our friends and their children train here as well. The whole team is top tier. Thanks Josh and Dakota for the amazing community you have fostered and your amazing approach to teaching and honoring the traditions and intentions of Jiujitsu!

We were in Asheville for a few days so I stopped by for their Saturday open mat class. The staff and students gave me a warm welcome. Great instructors and amazing training partners! Professor Josh is a great instructor and runs a great facility. My son takes classes there and is really enjoying the experience. There are a ton of kids in the kid's classes and they seem to have a very large number of people involved in the adult classes, as well.

I came to Asheville for a work trip, ended up dropping in for open mat. I only had no-gi stuff with me due to packing limitations, but Dakota offered to roll with me anyway and then lend me a gi. I had a great time. Everyone was welcoming and accommodating, and the Jiu Jitsu felt great. They have clean bathrooms, a workout/warmup area, free water, and a changing room. Highly recommend this gym. Felt like a friendly atmosphere but also had good technique and some killers. Best of both worlds! -purple belt

Me and a buddy dropped in today from out of town and did the fundamentals class and open mat. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming as soon as we walked in. Very clean and bright gym. The instructor showed 3 techniques that were all solid and was a good communicator. We had a bunch of tough rolls all the students from white belt up had great technique. Definitely plan on paying a visit if you are in the Asheville area looking to get a training session in with some good guys. Thanks again fellas

My wife and I were in the area for work/vacation and were graciously allowed to attend a no-gi class. Because what better to do on vacation than try and strangle some strangers? We could not have been more impressed. Everyone was extremely friendly and accommodating…and they train some killers there! Some serious talent at that school! I highly recommend joining or stopping in for a class.

We enrolled our sons in 2021. They are 5 and 9. Professor Josh and Dakota make learning BJJ fun for the kids while also installing self discipline, self control and confidence which is, in my opinion, vital for kids. My sons love going and the coaches take the time to invest in them. Jealous that I didn’t have this opportunity when I was a kid, but so thankful my sons do. I was able to begin training recently and Josh, Dakota, David and James have been amazing coaches. They take the time to explain and work through things. Their love for Jiu-Jitsu is evident and makes the difficult portions easier to work through. This is the best gym in the area and I highly recommend coming and checking it out!

My girlfriend and I are from Ohio and we're visiting the Asheville area over the weekend. We wanted to make it a priority to visit Gracie Barra Asheville and train with some of the people here, away from our current academy back home. Couldn't say anything less about the friendly people who welcomed us like family as soon as we walked through the door. I can't speak to the techniques or curriculum, we were just visiting and not actual members. BUT very tough and humble students, very good jujitsu oozing on the mats here. Great gym! I had the privilege of training here one morning while visiting from out of town. Professor Josh was friendly, authentic and adept at communicating his knowledge in a way that even a lowly white belt like myself could understand. I had such a good experience here, and if I lived in the area, this is where I would want to train. Also was able to meet and learn with/from some really cool people. Definitely hoping to come back when I find myself in Asheville!

Stopped by Gracie Barra during a trip and was graciously welcomed by the entire team. Loved the structure of the class and the instruction. Everyone I trained with had a high level of skill which translated to some tough and cerebral rolls. Highly recommend signing up or stopping by if you're passing through town!

Gracie Barra Asheville is a outstanding martial arts school. The professor is a excellent teacher and very patient. He is a multiple year black belt in Brazilian Jiu jitsu and has many years instructing both kids and adults. My son has been going here for years and will continue to do so. His kids class is well supervised and structured. It promotes leadership, self confidence and self discipline.

Josh is an excellent Jiujitsu practitioner. He is welcoming when I come in from out of town and his students are very capible in nogi grappling, which isn't always the norm. Both times I have dropped in I felt that I had left learning something new. I highly suggest stopping by if your an out of towner or new to jiu jitsu.

I stopped in for a 7pm class with my wife while we were on vacation. Great facility and people! We started with a warmup and stretch, did drills, went live for about 4 rounds, then, a cool down/stretch. I was particularly impressed with the way Josh invested time giving us quality instruction even though we are one-time visitors. He seems like a phenomenal instructor, also very personable. The training partners were friendly and skilled. No one was trying to hurt us or prove anything. I stuck around to roll live for the following class and enjoyed learning from the training partners. If you live in this area, you can feel confident this is a great BJJ academy. BJJ has been fun for me, and very helpful for my kids who participate. Check it out!

I have been training here for approximately 6 months. Walking in off the street was intimidating, but as soon as I met with Professor Josh and my class mates, I couldn’t wait for my next class. It was hard work, fun, and the perfect combination of both mental and physical stimulation. Professor Josh is patient and knows just how hard to push you! This school is absolutely amazing! It's motivating, empowering and welcoming. As a beginner I was very worried about fitting in and learning something new, especially when I wasn't a very active person, but this class has built up my self-confidence tremendously in just the few weeks I have been attending... it's addictive! Everyone is very friendly and respectful and Professor Josh is a wonderful teacher who truly cares about his students and their progress. Definitely a wonderful experience that I want to continue! Clean facility, great staff and convenient location!
