BJJ Olympia has far exceeded my family’s expectations for a martial arts school. We were treated like family the moment we walked in the door. The way it operates is like a well rounded organic machine. The whole place is refreshing and models exactly what I would expect from Jujitsu. Proud to be a part of this establishment.
My husband trained here when he was 17 and now we have our boys here. No nonsense but welcoming to all. My kids just started this week and have absorbed so much already. They look forward to coming!
Walking into BJJ Olympia for the first time was the hardest part, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The next day, I had my first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. After an hour and a half of training, I felt incredibly accomplished—alive in a way I hadn’t felt before.
The best part of this gym isn’t just the training; it’s the people. From young kids learning discipline and self-defense to adults of all ages pushing themselves physically and mentally, this gym fosters an environment of growth and camaraderie.
BJJ has helped me both mentally and physically, giving me discipline, confidence, and an outlet for stress. It’s a tough journey, but if you keep showing up, you’ll feel stronger and better every time. If you’re thinking about trying it, don’t hesitate—just take that first step. You won’t regret it!
Awesome folks, good music and fun, respectful and supportive environment. Our kid loves it and we like the people and music while waiting for him. This is not a generic feeling environment.
Professor Robert, Shane and the training staff here are incredible.
Whether you are learning BJJ or striking, or you are an amateur to veteran, you will be hard pressed to find a culture and society as affectual in teaching and investing in you.
I have been attending classes and open mats for a month and could not be happier. I drive to and from with a smile on my face multiple times a week, 40 minutes each leg from Lakewood.
What I enjoy most is the friendly family environment BJJ OLY provide, my 17, 8 and 5 year old classes and open mat, under an extremely reasonable monthly family rate.
Robert is the kind of leader, instructor, and role model that we need. So fortunate and happy to know him. He makes my children want to be better people in all aspects of their lives. We love BJJ. 👍
My son is new to this gym and has had a wonderful experience so far! The instructors are very dedicated to what they do and provide a welcoming environment.
I asked an international mma champion with UFC, 2 x ADCC champion, Division 1and Pac-10 college wrestler from Olympia (if you know, you know. If not look him up.) where I should go in Olympia to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kick boxing. He said, to paraphrase, “There is only one true option in Olympia, BJJ Olympia. Robert is the OG. He is one of the people that brought BJJ to the NW and is an amazing cool guy with a huge heart.” I assumed that he knew was right about this assessment since he trained there for years with Robert and competed against Robert many times. So back in 2018, I walked through the door and have never regretted a moment. The amount and diversity of classes and open mat time, the quality of instruction, inclusivity and diversity of demographics in the room make it the best martial arts experience of my life…and I have been training various arts and academies across the U.S. for over 40 years. I highly recommend coming in and checking it out. It’s fun, often funny but also deadly serious. Love this place! 5 big stars!
My children have been training at BJJ Olympia for a while now, and I can’t recommend it enough. The owners create such a welcoming and supportive environment that makes everyone, from beginners to experienced practitioners, feel at home.
What stands out most is their commitment to excellence. Belt promotions are truly earned here—they hold everyone to a high standard, which makes each achievement that much more meaningful.
The gym is also deeply connected to the local jiu-jitsu community, actively supporting and encouraging students to compete in nearby tournaments. Whether you’re looking to compete or just improve yourself, the focus on discipline and growth is clear in every class.
If you’re searching for a gym that values hard work, community, and personal development, BJJ Olympia is the place to be.
The community at this gym is incredible! I never thought I would be able to do something like this after extensive hospitalizations and had so much anxiety about being able to learn, but now I can't imagine it not part of my life. Robert & Shane are amazing and have done so much to make me and my family feel welcome. The women's class has become my favorite days of the week!
BJJ Olympia has a wonderful, safe, and competitive environment for for every skill level. My son has been nothing but supported and welcomed since beginning this year. His confidence both on the mat and off has improved. Our whole family loves it here and everyone involved!
Great place to train. Amazing people, knowledgeable and great instructors. Despite leaving feeling like I know nothing… I keep coming back time and time again.
Olympia BJJ is a great place to grow as a person and or an MMA practitioner. If you have questions regarding how to start, use the Olympia BJJ website or walk in and ask for Shane or Robert. If you have any other questions, introduce yourself and learn from the variety of other practitioners at the gym.
Starting Jiu-Jitsu at BJJ Olympia is honestly hands down one of the best decisions I’ve made in recent years! BJJ Olympia has pushed me both physically and mentally. Instructors are great, everyone has an awesome sense of humor, and it is hands down the most welcoming community of people I’ve met in Olympia. Can’t wait for my toddler to start his Jiu-Jitsu journey with BJJ Olympia in a few years!
Last year we made my 9 year old son try something new with Jiu Jitsu, now we can’t get him to skip a class even when we want to. BJJ Olympia has been a great experience for us.
These people are great!!! This is a community oriented organization. It can be intimidating to walk into a facility like this as a beginner, without any training. But, these folks make you feel safe and welcome. The instructors are all top notch and the training is exceptional. All of your classmates will embrace you as a friend. Get started on your journey now, you will not regret it!!!
A welcoming space for everyone! It can be intimidating learning self defense and combat sports especially as a female. At BJJ Oly they do a great job making everyone feel safe learning a new skill.
Best BJJ school in the PNW. Been training here for several years and the people have become my family. Highly recommend anyone wanting to start training BJJ try BJJ Olympia first!
We just moved to the area and BJJ Olympia has been foundational in getting our family settled and feeling welcomed to the area. They have something for everyone in the family from our 4 year old and up . All the staff has been amazing in taking the time to answer any questions and teach it the correct way.
The instructors at Bjj have become part of the family-they have come alongside to instruct-support and help guide my grandsons into fine young men. They teach jiujitsu but do so much more-teaching values beyond the mat!!
Super great experience! I moved to Olympia almost two years ago and was looking for a new place to train that suited me well. A former coach recommended this place and I haven’t been anything but happy. Each class you are welcomed and Robert is always happy to see you. Shane was super great, incredibly helpful and understanding to any issues you may have.
Super clean gym, has changing rooms and bathrooms.
I love the wide area of a schedule I can actually make it to a class or two a week instead of nothing at all and having to train at home.
So happy I got out of my comfort zone and came back to the martial art I love!
If you are looking for a welcoming place to train Jiu-jitsu that the whole family can enjoy look no further. My 8 year daughter and 6 year old son have been in the youth class for two weeks and absolutely love it! I get asked nightly if I'll be home in time from work to take them and get nothing but long faces if I deliver the bad news!
Robert does a great job of allowing the kids to enjoy themselves while also instilling discipline and respect in the class. This is a huge priority for my family. Shane is highly accommodating and always seems happy to walk your through your journey.
Kiddos were nervous the first few lessons but now there is no hesitation jumping right in and getting after it. Highly rewarding to watch.
Open mat for adults takes place at the same time as the youth class allowing me to train as well. I was hesitant jumping in with only some wrestling experience but the group of people here have been more than welcoming and happy to roll around with me and certainly push my cardio to its max!
I'd highly recommend to anyone looking to grow and try something new! I love the fact that I can do this with my kids and learn along aside them demonstrating the more we put ourselves out there the more confidence we will obtain!!!
Appreciate everyone at BJJ and looking forward to many years to come!
I was excited to find this gym just around the corner from me since just moving to Olympia. It feels very welcoming and at the same time both casual, yet serious. I've gotten so much help getting started and I also really appreciate the teaching approach which focus is as much on the real world application of skills as the technicalities of BJJ.
Extremely welcoming and accommodating to visitors on vacation in the local area. Whether you are brand new and looking to get introduced to BJJ or more seasoned and looking for technical and hard rolls BJJ Olympia has you covered.
This place is great. Love the women's and fundamentals classes. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. The upper belts will give you resistance and push you but never more then you can handle. Robert is great and is always down to answer any questions you have whether it's about class or what brand of yerba mate is best for home brew.
I was nervous about starting but everyone is so welcoming and helpful. I have learned so much in just a few months. I do the women's group and regular class and love both. Robert has done a wonderful job with this gym and I'm super proud to be a part of it.
I think everyone is extremely nervous when they do any sort of martial art for the first time. My wife and I certainly were. However, once we changed and got onto the mat everyone was extremely nice and welcoming. The instructor, whose name I unfortunatley forgot, was inviting, informative and humorous. What we got was a very rewarding first class.
Definitely do yourself the favor, fight the nervousness and give it a chance.
This has been a great experience so far for one of my kids. He's been going for about 9 months, just went through his first few competitions. It's a very approachable place. I'd never really considered any kind of martial art for myself and I'm considering doing it with my kids. Doing so wouldn't even cross my mind if the environment here wasn't so positive. It's also legit. I was rather shocked at what my kid is capable of in competition, especially due to his current class size. HE loves it and wants us taking him every possible day. Highly recommend for kids and the adult classes look legit.
You ever almost get into a fight and wonder what your first move is going to be? Most fights end up on the ground but they start on your feet, kickboxing has helped prepare me for such confrontations. On top of getting into fighting shape our coach teaches us correct styles to throw punches and kicks to countering and defending kicks and punches. It has helped build my confidence and I have made new sparring buddies. Would recommend to anyone just starting out learning to fight and to build yourself up.
If anyone is thinking about joining BJJ & Kickboxing I highly recommend. Very fun environment & staff is beyond excellent. I do kickboxing and from my experience I’ve learned how to defend myself and most importantly I’ve been working at building my confidence which I believe is most important. The instructors are Robert & Calin and both do a great job at making the place feel very welcoming for those of all levels.
Hi! I’m a dog known as the “pet pig” who comes by here 3 times a week to get all the love and scratches from all the good people who come here. I could smell so much good energy every time I come. The little girl who lives with me comes here to learn how to protect herself because I’m a little dog and don’t have the ability to do that for her. The best part is that I get all the hugs and kisses from Robert the trainer. He’s the best! For that I would like to give this place 5 out 5 paws!
My family and I have had an incredible experience at BJJ Olympia. Being a military family makes it difficult to maintain training because we are constantly switching gyms as we move around the world, however, we were welcomed with open arms from the moment we walked through the door. Not only has training brought us closer together as a family, but it has also helped our children develop self-confidence in ways we never imagined. The professors are highly skilled and it’s obvious that they genuinely care about the progress and well-being of every student. The curriculum is challenging, yet practical and rewarding. Membership fees are the best we’ve experienced, especially given that they offer training in multiple combat sports (jiu jitsu and kickboxing). We are grateful for the positive impact the academy has had on our lives and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a welcoming community and a great training experience.
New to the gym, a friend of mine had tried for years to get me to join and I finally broke down and came. They offer a free week of training with a loaner gi to try it out which was awesome so I could try out without a financial commitment. Everyone at the gym was inviting and even though I was getting pummeled I was learning and having a good time. The instructors are terrific at making a newbie feel welcome and breaking down the lesson so I could understand. I highly recommend my new home and family to all that want to challenge themselves and learn a life saving skill.
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing a truly fantastic atmosphere in the world of Jiu-Jitsu. From the moment my family arrived, the staff's warm welcome made us feel right at home. The customer service surpassed expectations, with attentive and friendly staff members going above and beyond to ensure our comfort and answering all our questions.
What sets BJJ apart is its commitment to providing a fantastic learning environment. The teaching methods employed are both engaging and effective, catering to diverse age groups and skill levels. Whether you're a novice or seasoned participant, the instructors are skilled at creating a positive and educational experience for everyone.
Our time there was nothing short of delightful, leaving us with lasting memories and a desire to return. They have a great “family package” deal that we are utilizing for my 3 kids (ages 9, 8, and 4).
I wasn't sure what to expect, but it exceeds anything I thought it would be. My son loves it and so do I. The instructor is calm and listens just as much as he teaches. It has a open and friendly environment, is clean and has space for all ages/skills. I would recommend it to anyone that might be interested.
Started Kickboxing and BJJ this month and I’m very impressed. All of the instructors are extremely knowledgeable and professional. The environment is so welcoming and encouraging! Definitely a place to come get away from daily stress and learn real and valuable skills. There are members of all ages and experience levels so it’s easy to fit in. I don’t have young children, but the kids classes are always wrapping up when I get there and the kids and parents seem to absolutely love it. Last, but certainly not least, they have the most reasonable prices I’ve seen after researching many places. I highly recommend BJJ Olympia if you are looking for a place to train.
Coming here has been a great experience for me and my sons. Robert and his other instructors are very knowledgeable, and there is a good sense of community here.
My son recently started going here and we couldn't be more happy and comfortable. The instructors are extremely helpful with newcomers and making them feel like they belong. All the instructors seem well-informed and it's an overall grade community feeling. Highly recommend to those looking for an establishment either for their kid or for their adult selves!
The owner, Robert, and the entire coaching staff go above and beyond to create a welcoming and supportive community within the gym. They are always willing to answer questions, provide guidance, and offer individualized feedback and have a genuine interest in getting to know each student which makes the training experience all the more enjoyable.
My son (8) has been attending classes for 6 months. This gym is amazing, he has grown and learned so much. Instructors care about mindset and mental growth as much as the physical aspect.
This is an amazing place to train! Robert is an highly experienced and diligent coach, who does an incredible job with his students. The gym environment is very friendly with a super chill and fun vibe! Great for newbies and experienced belts. Best gym in the PNW by far!!!
I joined the gym in October 2023. Felt welcomed immediately - I am still new at this craft however the environment and people never made me feel like a newbie. The teaching is superb; slow, well thought-out, accessible. I highly recommend joining this gym if you’re interested in any sort of martial art.
I recommend the BJJ Olympia gym wholeheartedly. The training is rigorous, fostering discipline and teamwork. There is ample amount of mat space. Instructor is skilled, enhancing my overall proficiency even as a beginner. Notably, students of all belt colors readily support newcomers and their growth.
I am a husband, father, first responder, coach and athlete. I have been coming here for over 10 years, and I couldn’t give it a higher recommendation. It is a complete melting pot of different people, personalities, experience levels and ability. The instructors are great at adapting to various levels and ages. And for those looking to push their jiu jitsu to the next level, there is a large number of driven people in both Gi and No-Gi that are both passionate about the sport and great to be around. It’s truly a family there, and their arms are always open and looking for new members to join our growing community.
Adam C.
P.S. my kids behave better because of jiu jitsu. Might be the biggest perk for my spouse.
Everyone is super open and welcoming even if you have 0 grappling/martial art experience. Classes are great and many upper level belts are willing to work with you during open mat.
Our teenage sons started a couple months ago. Initially they were hesitant. They took karate as kids and BJJ was foreign to them. It took a few weeks to warm up to it and now they have fun and love it! Robert and his team are excellent.
I put my daughter into classes, she loves them! And I have been very impressed by the sense of community and the willingness of everyone to work with her and work together.
I've been coming here for about a year, it's a great atmosphere! Robert the owner, cares and it shows, he strives to help everyone reach their fullest potential. He's always there to answer questions and still has a good time joking around, making it enjoyable. I recommend that anyone thinking about doing any kind of martial arts training or looking just to get into the gym come try this place out!! It's a great workout for the body, mind and soul!!
Shopped around a bit for somewhere that’s good for our family: myself, my daughter, and my husband. The schedule and the pricing of BJJ Olympia can’t be beat. While my husband and daughter do BJJ, I do the kickboxing. I initially thought I’d just get a good workout in, but the professionalism and instruction have me taking technique more seriously. Glad we made the commitment!
What an amazing place!
I have joined to be humbled and to be surrounded by people who share a passion for martial arts and the philosophy that binds all our actions in life. I have found it all here. I can’t imagine a future without this place. Honestly, come in and roll. After your first day, you’ll be hooked.- Roman.
My son is 6, we started right when he was able to and it has been great. They have great mentors, tons of opportunities for flexible schedule and has helped my son tremendously in discipline and of course getting in shape.
This is a positive place to be. From the owner Robert, to every sparring partner I have had, my experience has been one of inclusivity, empowerment and encouragement. I am a female. There are many females that train here. I feel safe and just like another person on the mat who is there to learn and be the best version of themselves. BJJ provides the space for this. I highly recommend this school for all ages.
We have been taking our 11 year old daughter and 8 year old son here for about 9 months now. In short, the gym is great, Coach Robert and the other coaches are excellent with kids, and the gym community is committed to teaching kids (and adults) BJJ. We wanted our kids to learn self defense and build a sense of confidence in their ability to take on difficult situations. The first couple of weeks were extra hard, but the kids quickly started learning techniques they could rely on to have fun while sparring. Coach Robert is very patient and encouraging with kids, while at the same time requiring the kids to focus on getting technique right (which is great). Sometimes as many as 30 kids at a time come to class, and his classroom management skills are very impressive. He also keeps track of all the kid’s skill levels (and names) by knowing all of the kids, and is able to pair them up very well so your kid is always learning. You can take your kids 6 times a week (8 if you count tournament classes). All kids classes are typically taught by a black belt instructor (Coach Robert), but every now and then the kids get the opportunity to learn from one of the other experienced adults in the gym. Tournament classes and Friday sparring classes are definitely more intense, but a great opportunity for the kids to use what they have been working on during the other classes that week. Taking our kids multiple times throughout the week has definitely resulted in fast growth for them as individuals, and they love coming to class. Coach Robert is very supportive and willing to answer any questions you have about your child’s development.
Update: The kids have now been training at the gym for a little over 2 years, and the gym culture and community are still great. The kids have really started to develop their own style of rolling and are having a great time. Take your kids in if you want them to stay active, get strong, believe in themselves, and learn to fail forward. You won’t regret it!
This is an amazing place to train. It is mostly in the gi but there are some days that are no-gi. I trained for several years in no-gi before I moved to Olympia. I chose BJJ Olympia because this school has a welcoming environment, detail-oriented and positive teachers, and a systematic teaching approach.
The nuances of each technique are explained so well, that I feel a large part of the gaps I had in my skillset improved significantly. There is a culture of teaching, helping one another, as colored belts have opportunities to work with the white belts, which is important for growth.
The school does incorporate some wrestling as well, which is very important and neglected at many places. There are also kickboxing and kids BJJ classes.
I definitely recommend this place!
Bjj is about building resilient people through developing leadership qualities and being an example of sportsmanship in this top tier school, Olympia BJJ. You will find coach to be keen on every individuals journey, he is simply diligent and it shows through his students progress.
Not to mention the entire gym is great for the whole family but especially great for children! It’s a great place to be part of or attend. You’ll find this gym to be lively and robust. Filled with white belts to black belts and toddlers and the more seasoned. You will be welcomed and confident here because it’s simply a great place with great people all learning a great art.
I have been coming here for about 4 months and can’t say enough about the owner and fellow practitioners. Recently at a competition one of the guys in my group asked how long I'd been competing. After our rounds he said he was really impressed considering the short amount of time. He asked if I liked my teacher and I told him how great our gym is. I said the owner does such a great job instructing and creating an environment where we are all learning from one another. He said they must be doing something right to be bringing new students along so quickly.
My kids go to Jiu-Jitsu here and I will never take them anywhere else. Robert and his team foster such a healthy, respectful and responsible outlook of the sport. They really know how to work with kids and encourage them to be their best .
I cannot express how great this organization is. My 10 year old daughter started coming by a recommendation from a friend to build her confidence. Robert, the gym owner and main instructor, went out of his way to make her comfortable, and she took to the sport, the other children, and Robert almost immediately. He is phenomenal with the children (and adults too, I am sure) - just the right amount of toughness and grit, along with empathy and compassion. This sport and gym is going to shape the rest of her life - her habits, mental and physical toughness, and resilience. Such a great influence on this community. Thank you.
I love this place. I bring my 3 sons here, ages 6, 8, and 11. Robert is a top-notch coach and teacher. My youngest was very hesitant at first, and the other kids in the class helped him until he came into his own.
I also started taking classes as well. There are fundamental classes for beginners as well as more advanced classes. You can also just come roll before class starts.
There is something for everyone here, and no one will make you feel like you do not belong.
There is also a family plan that won't break the bank if you have a larger family like mine.
My boys had the option of BJJ or Karate lessons. They picked karate, so I signed them up at a karate gym but the earliest start date was a week away. This BJJ gym offered a free week drop-in trial, so we said alright, why not. After a week, my boys refused to switch over to karate because they’ve enjoyed their trainings and the friends they’ve made already here. It’s been a little over a year now and both my boys have shown tremendous growth. Much appreciation and thanks to Robert and the many coaches for their ongoing help and support. They really treat you like family here and check in on you, not limited to only matters related to BJJ. This place offers two 30 min competition sessions each week (at no extra cost!!!). I highly recommend you take advantage of this if your kiddos plan on doing tournaments. We love it here, come join us
BJJ Olympia is an amazing place for kids and adults. My husband and daughter both love going there. My daughter was dealing with bullying at school and we looked to jiu jitsu to build her confidence. Robert has been a great mentor to her and she has grown to be a confident, strong, young girl. I can't say enough positive things, we love BJJ Olympia.
Robert and the other coaches have become a second family for my twins and husband. I love that my kids can hit the mats all week.Through training and competitions we have seen a huge impact in confidence and behavior.
Bjj of Olympia has a friendly community and is a great place to train. I’ve been coming here for over a year now and I can’t get enough of it. If you’re thinking about starting your training, just come in and try it out. The hardest part is showing up, but once you do you’ll never regret it.
I appreciate the structure and professionalism of BJJ Olympia. Everyone is very welcoming and genuinely wants to help you meet your goals. BJJ is great for women, and I love that there are a few who show up regularly. We need more women in this sport, and this is a great place to learn! Come join us!
This place is truly for everyone. Men, women and children. All ages! I heard the great things about JiuJitsu so I decided to finally jump into martial arts. I started here at Olympia BJJ and wish I would have started sooner. Robert is awesome!! He cares about his students. If you train here you will become a more capable person. JiuJitsu is a little overwhelming in the beginning but if you come to fundamentals class and stick with it your body will pick up the art!
The gym also has great and passionate purple, blue and even striped white belts that care about coaching others.
Classmates are also pretty chill. The environment is comfortable and conducive for having fun and learning.
If your on the fence about trying it out come in for a fundamentals class.
They also have a great military discount!
Also lots of open mat time so you can get training in 7 days a week.
Thanks Professor Robert!
COME FOR THE BJJ, STAY FOR THE PERSONAL GROWTH
TLDR: This gym changes lives. Bring your children and train yourself to become a better, stronger, more confident, and gentle person. Highly recommend private lessons.
—————-
I was here to visit for a month. I had started BJJ about 5 months prior in another school and, while visiting my family in Oly, discovered that this gym was 10 minutes from home. I signed up for private lessons with Robert. I’m my short time there our interactions proved to be a game changer, not only on the mats but in my life.
First of all, Robert has the perfect mentality and approach for a BJJ instructor in the NW. He possesses a strange balance between irreverence and compassion. It’s hard to explain. Every step of every lesson had a meaning on deepening my skills in BJJ but also in deepening my applications of the principles in my everyday life. Small moves, manage risk, wait for opportunity, flow to the holes, the list goes on.
Second aspect of the gym I particularly appreciated was that all of the other practitioners at the gym were of amazing character. Black, brown, purple, blue belts all spent long amounts of time with me helping me to refine technique and help with philosophy during open mat training time.
Third was in how my son appreciated his own classes. He had been learning BJJ for one year prior to taking the kids classes at BJJ of Olympia. His progress was good but nothing special. Often I was curious if he even wanted to participate in the sport. In his short time there he grew a new level of confidence and love for the art. Not to mention his ability grew quickly and he hasn’t lost any of it.
So we finished our month in Olympia, said goodbye to Robert and Co. Returned to our home gym and found that everything we had learned in our one month there had brought us to the top of our home gym. All of a sudden I was hard to beat, I was submitting folks with relative ease. Most importantly the severe soreness and pain I felt in my body after every training prior to my lessons with Robert were now nonexistent. My flow has exponentially improved and so has my boy’s. I am a white belt who is surviving and sometimes even being a real pain against higher belts.
I refer to what I learned and quote Robert often. ( Saying this makes it sound like he fancy’s himself a guru but the opposite is true. Because he’s real, his wisdom sticks.) On the mats, in sparring, his principles stay with me and bring success regularly. Everyone within his gym seems to have the same ethos as well. Low ego, free exchange, high trust and openness. It’s not surprising that so many people in high stress careers attend. In the dressing room many of them also had insight that has proved amazingly useful.
I recommend this gym entirely if you are looking to change your life for the better. To get in better shape. To learn about your capabilities and limitations. To challenge your understanding about yourself. And least of all, to learn BJJ. This place is legit and almost makes me wish I spent more time in Oly. I half consider coming to visit just for the gym alone.
Finally, I am an Eagle Scout and have played ice hockey for many years. I submit that time at BJJ of Olympia rivals both of these other experiences in terms of growing young people into strong, responsible, and intentional adults.
If you have ever seen the movie or read the book “Never Ending Story”, there is a point in the story where the hero must face the true reflection of himself and discover what his true character contains. From there he must confront and overcome his demons in order to save the world on which he lives. If you have the willingness and the desire to find out what you really have in you and find out how deep down you really can go… this an ideal place to do so. Try it and you’ll see I’m not being hyperbolic at all.
Oh, and considering Olympia has become town full of lunacy and mayhem, it’s good to know how to handle yourself from a place of composure and fortitude.
One of the most important things to me in finding a gym to train at is a sense of community and safety. This meets those tenants and beyond. Great leadership, Flexible schedules, kids classes, and a great deal of insight that you may not get at other training facilities.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu of Olympia is beyond amazing. They offer a range of programs for all ages and at times that can fit in with practically any type of schedule. Joining BJJ Olympia has been more than a workout for me; it is an experience both physically and mentally. If you want to discover more of yourself and what you are capable of, or have even just wondered about Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, I cannot recommend stopping by and speaking to Robert or the instructors. Absolutely worth more than a 10/10.
One of the best places to take kids if your looking to have them learn something new or if you just want to get them active… this is the place. They learn strength within themselves, and discipline and respect for them selves and others….
The instruction here is top notch. The community is warm and welcoming. There are no egos here, just people helping each other become better.
My daughter (8yrs) has been going here for about 7 months now, and the improvement in her confidence and resiliency is phenomenal.
My family is very grateful to have found BJJ of Olympia.
Thank you Coach Robert for all that you do.
I absolutely love this place. The vibe is friendly and people of all levels are welcomed, from newbies and casuals to those competing at national and international tournaments. Coach Robert sets a tone of professionalism and mutual growth that has seeped deeply into the culture of the gym. The benefits of BJJ to self development and to real self defense situations is regularly highlighted. Wonderful kids program as well, which my 10yo loves. I feel very lucky to be a part of this gym and can't say enough good things about it. I have a strong sense that everyone who trains here is a better person for it- more resilient, more capable, more aware of one's strengths and limitations, and more in tune with what it takes to improve oneself in all aspects of life. That is certainly true for me.
I've been coming here for years and it's always a good time. Very welcoming for the entire family. Kids classes provide exercise, discipline, and a positive social setting. Adult classes include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing. No matter what you're experience level, this place will help you learn and sharpen your skills. Haven't had this much fun as an adult since I was a kid, it's a blast!
This place is amazing! Before coming here, I'd never had experience in grappling so I was super nervous about checking it out. This school took me in and has provided a friendly and welcoming atmosphere ever since my first day. The head coach is very dedicated and takes time with each student as they need. There are many upper level belts, that are very knowledgeable and willing to help. With bjj classes and open mat every day, I have no problem with finding time to train most of the time. I've been coming here for almost a year and it's a shame I didn't find it sooner. Update: 5 years later, still going and training with good people. Highly recommend, come in and have some fun. Edit: Update
Robert is a great coach! I am so thankful for this gym and the positive influence that it has had on my 12 year old daughter, I have watched her confidence grow in the last few months and the support from the other parents is so positive and the atmosphere is so open and welcoming we truly feel at home here.
I came to BJJ Olympia with little to no prior experience in the art with the hope that I would become more educated and capable. It has been about 4 months since I started taking classes and this academy has exceeded all of my expectations. The facility is clean, spacious, and organized. Robert's instruction is clear, patient, and punctuated with humor as well as an underlying passion that he has cultivated over the course of his several decades of experience. The degree of camaraderie and kindness present in the students and professors alike continues to impress me. I would highly suggest this academy to anyone who is looking to take up the art of BJJ.
A great training environment for both kids and adults. Whether you are looking to get a great workout, learn self-defense, or compete at a high level, this gym has it. Top quality instruction you won't find anywhere else, coupled with a great, supportive learning environment. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
Everyone here is super friendly and welcoming. The beginner classes are very fun and informative. Lots of open mat time and more competitive classes as well. Whether you've practiced BJJ before or if its your first time, I would definitely recommend this gym.
This Jiu-Jitsu gym is of the highest quality and work. I have never left a google review but it occurred to me that this place deserves to flourish. The training and instruction is thorough, clear, and engaging. The atmosphere of the gym is open, friendly, and exciting. Whether you are someone looking to train seriously or simply get a workout in or learn for the first time, this is the place. I cannot recommend it highly enough, 6/5 stars.
Really great place to train ,Lots of mat time available, open everyday through out the week which helps with skill development. It has a Very welcoming atmosphere with a competitive nature with the overall goal in mind (progression). welcomes other visiting academies which provides a variety of skill sets that may not be seen around the gym. This place is welcoming just as it is game for those looking to test themselves.
I have been training at BJJ Olympia with Robert for almost 4 years now, and if I could give them more than 5 stars I would. When you sign up to train at this gym not only do you receive quality training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, kickboxing, and MMA, but you also become a member of a close knit community. If you are in the area looking for a place to train, look no further, this gym is the place to be.
Love this place and so thankful our kids and family have this supportive community! Our son and daughter have been going her for several years. Robert is amazing with the kids! He is not only an incredible BJJ instructor but encourages them in everything they do. Kids classes are offered Mon-Sat, so as our schedule changes with other sports, we can still get in.
I have a 6 year old girl and a 8 year old boy. They both love it! Robert is excellent with the kids and his teaching goes beyond BJJ. We’re taking a break at the moment due to Baseball but my kids can’t wait to get back. Great for full time and in between sports. You can’t walk in the place without feeling welcomed. Whether it’s Robert or Lindsey or a student, you are greeted with genuine kindness as soon as you walk through the door. Get your kids in there! Once you step foot in the class, parent or student your apart of a unique community that welcomes all. Oh and the kids learn how roll other kids up like play-Doh. Respectfully
BJJ of Olympia is a very welcoming and friendly gym. The quality of instruction is outstanding, the facilities are clean, and classes are ran well. Robert has created a warm yet hardworking environment. It’s an excellent place for your kids to learn BJJ and the respect and responsibility that comes with it. This carries over into the adult classes as well. If you are interested in kickboxing the coach Shilo is a very high level Dutch style kickboxer who makes all levels feel at home and comfortable. Hands down the best stand up coach I’ve ever had. I’ve trained in several gyms throughout the years and BJJ of Olympia is the one that truly feels like home. I highly recommend it.
My 5-year-old son and I have been taking classes at Olympia BJJ for about 8 months now. For me and my family, the environment that Robert has created is a very welcoming and humble one. The instructors are exceptional, and are great at teaching you real-life, practical self-defense skills in BJJ. There are many students from a law enforcement, fire fighter, EMT and armed forces background, which I find also helpful and appreciate as a USMC vet myself. However, there are also a lot of students, both younger and older, who come from all walks of life from tradesman, to banking, to college students. Robert is an excellent teacher for both adults and kids, and while I know that there is so much more to learn, I do feel that I have learned a lot in just a short amount of time from one of the best schools and instructors in the Pacific Northwest.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu of Oly is by far one of the better gyms in the area for teaching younger children martial arts. My family and I went to three different gyms in the area where we tried a week trial period at each. My oldest, who had been studying jiu jitsu for a year at this point, never really felt at place within the other gyms. We came from a well known gym in Arizona so we had a standard for what we wanted from a gym and instructors. Rob was the only black belt in the area that showed he actually cared about instructing kids of all ages. The environment of the gym was inviting and allowed our kids to integrate easily with the class. Rob does a fantastic job teaching not only jiu jitsu but also life lessons along the way. Rob is the primary instructor and he'll use his lower belts to assist with classes. This was a big deciding factor to allow our kids to continue training with him. The had black belt of a gym really helps to set the tone of the training environment. We couldn't be happier with our decision and our new jiu jitsu family.
Olympia BJJ is an awesome school. The school not only teaches world class Jiu Jitsu it also teaches values and character that isn’t found most places these days. The instructor Robert is an excellent role model for the students and routinely gives one on on e instruction to students during class to ensure that they fully understand the techniques. Robert also teaches 95% of the children’s classes himself. The school has a very friendly and family type environment the is safe and clean.
BJJ of Oly is an amazing place to learn, train, and become a better version of yourself. My son has been attending classes with Robert and his team for nearly two years now and I cannot speak more highly of their efforts, competence and professionalism. As a member myself, I can honestly say that the sense of family and feeling of being a valuable part of the broader Jiu Jitsu community at large is unmatched in the area. This gym is full of big personalities and small egos. Time spent here is time well spent.
Great group of guys who all love jiu jitsu. Welcoming atmosphere and everyone is willing to help. Robert is a great professor and gives great instruction. The kids class has been great for my kids. Looking forward to many years of training here. Highly recommended.
This place is as good as they come! My son and I felt welcome the moment we walked in the door. There is a great sense of community here! The kids class is equally challenging and rewarding, my 8 year old son always looks forward to class. As an older adult just getting started I am welcomed and worked with by the upper belts. No ego, no gate keeping. Just good people helping each other improve. Don't hesitate to check it out.
Joining this gym was literally the best choice I have made in the past 5 years. The coaches here are so respectful and knowledgeable about their craft. I have learned so much about myself here, and it has translated into so many aspects of my life. I wholeheartedly recommend Robert and NW HIT center!
Amazing gym! Great coaches and atmosphere. The kids class is the best we’ve been too. Robert is a very skillful and respected coach. An awesome role model for the kids. Super clean mats and overall a very positive experience.
It's my first day there, and I have to say it is one of the best MMA/BJJ gyms out there, at least as far as the ones I've been to. Everyone is helpful and down to earth, the coaches are very knowledgable, and the techniques they teach are very practical and useful. Definitely a welcoming place to train, learn, and grow. The music is pretty great too, it has a forgotten ronin samurai vibe to it lol. Bonus points for the Jolly Roger flag hanging above the gym!
I am not one who would have EVER considered going to a MMA gym. I am dorky and somewhat uncoordinated. I went in about a year ago and was immediately met with kindness and encouraged to participate to the best of my ability. This gym has TONS of experienced grapplers as well as newbies. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Robert, Lori and the whole to anyone who asked me. Welcoming to all people, all sizes, all genders. Such a lovely fun place to train!
I’ve been training here for just over a year now. I came in with no grappling experience and was welcomed with open arms. I was very lucky to have this as my first bjj gym: The culture here is all about helping each other and learning together. If you’re nervous about the up close and personal nature of bjj, fear not—your brain will be too preoccupied to care about anything but the task at hand. A typical session is equal parts humbling and joyful. I come as often as I can, with no end in sight. My two young children just started as well. Try it out, it might change your life.
Robert is an awesome teacher -- encouraging, funny, great in breaking down the moves and pointing out key details for improvement to students. Had an awesome time visiting BJJ of Olympia while here in WA. Atmosphere is warm and conducive to learning. Staff is kind and helpful. Can't wait to visit again, maybe next year! Oss!
NW High Intensity Training Center and BJJ of Olympia is a great environment with super people. I appreciate that Robert Owens (gym owner) and the other instructors teach both the sport aspect as well as real-world defense applications. The skills and experience that the black belts and high belts bring to classes each day is amazing. And, they offer classes seven days a week and at different times which is makes it easy to fit a workout into different schedules.
A great training space – just not for women or queer people. When I mentioned that I might tap out to prevent panic from my PTSD, an instructor told me that I would have to get over it eventually and that he was sure it wasn’t as severe as his trauma from going to war and telling me how many friends he had lost at my age, assuming that I hadn’t also lost many, many friends to self harm and war (I have) I told him that he had made me uncomfortable he proceeded to lecture me in front of my sparring partner that I didn’t have the life experience he had. The head instructor was great, but this ruined it for me on top of the price gouging from his financial coordinator.
Edited after the owners response- Your standard pricing is an average car payment. Your instructor was clearly not advising me and was putting my partner and I in holds until we tapped out from pain to ‘make us tougher and see what we could take’. He clearly told me tapping out from PTSD would be weak. Also, they have a trans non-inclusive bathroom policy, which is kind of funny because they assume that trans people have the same body parts as they did before transition and to ‘protect the children’. They would be very wrong.
