Great instructors that guide in both martial arts and life
Abel’s One Dojo has a wide variety of martial arts and related wellness classes that are excellently organized and delivered; my kids have enjoyed aikido for the last 2 years with Abel and his gentle, structured teaching style; and adult classes whether daytime and evenings are great breaks in the day or programs for long term enrichment. Highly recommended.
Ki Aikido is a perfect blend of harmony, and self defence based martial arts. The instructors are fantastic, patient, and help you feel what is correct or not.
I highly recommend it!
I am very happy that everyone is so warm and welcoming! It’s a real community. That’s a treasure. Plus the Aikido classes themselves are very inspiring. I look forward to every class.
I love practicing Aikido at One Dojo. As an older woman, I feel more stronger, balanced, focused, and healthier, because of the physical, mental, philosophical underpinnings/spiritual, and community aspects of training. Sensei Villacorta is a masterful teacher and a kind supportive human. I am honored and privileged to be apart of the One Dojo community.
If you are like me, you have told yourself, I am too old, too inflexible, too weak, too uncoordinated to begin Aikido -- it is not true. The training is designed to develop greater flexibility, strength, and overall levels of general fitness.
I can’t express enough gratitude to Boulder Ki Aikido. We had tried a few studios in Boulder and this was the first one that my son begged to go back to and was consistently eager to show me everything he learned. The balance of challenge with kindness, respect, and discipline was exactly what my son was looking for. Hands down, the best Martial Arts Boulder has to offer!
Best Boulder Martial Arts spot! I joined Boulder Ki Aikido in September of 2021 and it has been and continues to be a deeply transformative journey. Aikido is truly a unique discipline of self-discovery and of unifying mind and body. Our Head Instructor, Abel Villacorta Sensei, brings together such a positive and encouraging community, while also guiding you in a disciplined practice. I have met so many wonderful people and made so many great friends since becoming part of Boulder Ki Aikido. If you are looking for community, mind-body discipline, or some deeper sense of purpose, I highly recommend giving Aikido a try.
Sensei is a great teacher! He is a living example of what he teaches and makes class fun by not being too serious. Everyone is very patient with each other and it's an honor to be a part of this Dojo. I highly recommend Boulder Aikido!
Deserving of more than 5 stars. I hesitate to even post this review, as I feel like it’s such a special gem of a place and I (selfishly) don’t want anything to change. Ever. It’s magical. Sensei Abel is the MOST patient person I’ve ever met - he manages somehow to focus 10ish 5yos on the practice (they meditate, learn Japanese, practice moves that sometimes turn into a hula dancing, and much much more). My kiddo (and I) both love this place:)
A wonderful, caring aikido dojo that promotes positive growth, mindfulness, wellness, fitness, self defense, grace, and community! Abel Sensei is a master teacher and wonderful human being. I highly recommend!
Our son (almost 6 y.o. 1st-time) loved the Peace Samurai summer camp.
We were very impressed with sensei Abel and his program. Not just a play camp (though there was plenty), they discussed a positive virtue each day (e.g. respect, benevolence, …), learned to check their awareness & breath on top of the physical practices.
Very welcoming and appropriate for 1st-timers. So glad we found this.
And, looking forward to parent/child class in the fall.
Incredible experience for all ages at One Dojo! Abel is as knowledgeable, centered, and compassionate as they come. A focused and disciplined Sensei, who leads with his heart, makes learning fun, and is supportive for all age and skill levels. Learn Aikido with him, you’ll be so glad you did.
My daughter and I recently started Aikido at Boulder Ki Aikido, and we’ve been having a wonderful experience. With superb instructors (who are attentive and seasoned), a spacious and elegant dojo, and an easy check-in app, Boulder Ki Aikido is the perfect place to learn Aikido. As a new practitioner, but with other martial arts and fitness prior experiences, I found Aikido to be an excellent combination of breathing, focus, posture, physical ability, control, and self defense—and BKA’s instructors emphasize each of these elements. The teen class is perfect for my daughter; she feels comfortable and welcome in it. Finally, the measures they have in place regarding the pandemic are strong, making us feel safe while we add the awesome benefits of Aikido to our living.
My son loves this dojo, the practice, and the sensei. We were looking for something that would give him the opportunity to focus his energy, challenge his physicality and coordination, as well as boost his confidence, Boulder Ki Aikido has done all of this and more!
I highly recommend Abel-Sensei and the One Dojo. Sensei's presence and approach to teaching mindfulness and unification of mind and body are respectful and of the highest quality - regardless of age or ability. In my opinion the teachings here are the truest form of Martial Arts.
I joined Boulder Ki Aikido Dojo with my 7 year old daughter last year. Sensei Abel is awesome, very child friendly. She is always excited to go to the dojo, she looks forward to Saturdays when she can practice. Ki Aikido teaches self defense without aggression and with mindfulness
Our son has been taking private Aikido training with sensei Abel, in addition to participating in group lessons. Both private and group lessons have been good experiences. The private lessons, however, have been amazing. Sensei Abel is very encouraging and teaches important life skills. He is helping our son build confidence, stretch himself mentally and physically, and find his inner strengths.
I did Aikido in college and for my oldest child it was obvious he needed to engage in a martial art - but as a boy I needed it to be about focus, movement of aggression and letting go. Not how strong am I but more about - what are my inner strengths.
These are the founding principles of Aikido. That’s why we came here and I’ve been nothing but very impressed and grateful since.
My child has a home here with a community and a place to work on energetics of emotion and moving with it. He has friends he goes to hang out with outside his school community and that’s really important for young kids to learn to reach beyond what is just in the immediate. This kind of community is vital to any child, or especially as they grow up and transition to tween-hood then teen-hood. Those transitions are honored and recognized in a healthy way in this community.
Most importantly in a world full of intensity, this dojo gives a place to work with intensity, outer and inner. It welcomes transformation and communication. It being dialogue and helps create discipline to be the best of all you are in a kind and soft way. It shows force is soft too.
If you have a child who needs a place to develop inner confidence a sense of self and non-violent communication - this is it.
There are times I share what’s happening for my child in their school with life or siblings and the teachers can help them process it on the mat. This is invaluable.
Do not hesitate to try it out.
Love this place sensei Abel is the most patient person with the kids and can teach both the adults and kids simultaneously. His ability to calm the kids and teach is superior. Our daughter loves the class and we go as a family. I couldn't recommend this place enough.
This has been a wonderful experience for our son. He has grown exponentially and on many levels. Sensai Abel is kind, patient, heart-centered and skilled, committed teacher.
The instructors and community at boulder Ki aikido set it apart from any other martial art school.
The focus of their practice epitomizes martial arts philosophy. First teaching the mind martial arts principles, and then using the physical art as a vehicle to embody those principles. The harmony of these two aspects enlivens a journey toward unification of mind and body that touches any and every aspect of everyday life.
Students of all levels work together helping each other learn, and the instructors go above and beyond ensureing every student receives personal training time in every class. The introductory month special makes it easy to try, and you can tell from just a phone call what a difference ki aikido can make for you.
We visited a number of martial arts studios in Boulder and were really drawn to the fun, focused and connected environment of Boulder Ki Aikido. The instructors are very engaged and the practice is calm and centered. I’ve been attending classes there for nine months and I only get more impressed with the quality of people and the depth of training. I very highly recommend Boulder Ki Aikido.
I have studied several different Martial arts over the years and thoroughly enjoy the experience, personal attention and family feel at Boulder Ki Aikido. Abel sensei and his team are true professionals and genuinely passionate about this art. It is a gentle form of defense that works equally well for women, men and children alike. I have studied here for over two years and I highly recommend you come and check us out!
Aikido is considered one of the safer martial arts, yet it's easy to get hurt with any practice if proper form isn't taught and practiced. Boulder Ki Aikido provides great instruction by attentive and experienced instructors.
