Great experience training at Matakas! Professor Chris and his team deliver excellent instruction with patience, clarity, and real attention to each student’s progress. They make techniques easy to understand while pushing you to improve—whether you’re a beginner or more experienced. The supportive atmosphere and quality coaching make this a top choice for anyone looking to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and build confidence on and off the mats. Highly recommended!
Jiu Jitsu has become a huge part of our family’s life since we joined Matakas for the opening of the Hamilton location. All three of us boys attend regularly, covering the Tykes, Youth, and Adult classes. The community and culture here are welcoming, supportive, and motivating.
Every coach is excellent, but Professor Chris really stands out. He has a great way of making Jiu Jitsu fun and accessible while still keeping it challenging and rewarding. We’ve also seen a noticeable difference in our kids’ focus and discipline, which has been incredible to watch.
The academy is always clean and well-maintained, and you can tell a lot of pride goes into the space. We absolutely love it here and couldn’t recommend it more.
I’ve had the ability to watch their Tiny Tyke’s and youth program at their location in Florence and now their location in Hamilton. You would never know that this school just opened a month ago. The instructors are top-tier and really keep the kids engaged. They encourage kids to focus stay disciplined while also having fun!!!

I recently relocated to NJ and was in search of a new Jiu Jitsu academy. The minute I arrived for my morning class with Coach Eder and Coach Mike I knew this was the place for me.
The Instructors do an amazing job of breaking down the basics and explaining the techniques.
I highly recommend this gym for beginners and intermediate jiu jitsu students.
I was always interested in trying a class but was super intimated to do so. Met Professor Jim and Coach Dan out and they promised it would NOT be an intimating experience. They were right! MBJJ has a very welcoming and friendly environment. I’ve been training there for over a year and have met many great people. Everyone takes care of one another and makes sure we all can go to work in one piece the next day. Highly recommend Matakas Jiu Jitsu!!
All the coaches are amazing, welcoming amd always willing to answer any questions you may have. Fellow classmates also add in the enjoyment of learning jiu-jitsu by helping out and always adding encouraging and positive comments. Overall the atmosphere is terrific and this is always something I look forward to doing everyday.
Matakas has been an absolutely wonderful experience for my daughter! She is keeping active, getting stronger and most importantly preparing herself with self defense should she ever need to use it. I would recommend it to any kid or adult for that matter!
Hello! I am reaching out just to let you know how much we appreciate Matakas Jiu Jitsu. I am so thankful that one day last January Ava told me " I want to try Jiu Jitsu!"
I think we all know that Coach Adam will always be Ava's #1 😂 and that she has her special Michael Myers connection with Coach Dan, but Coach Emma and Coach Felix are big time favorites as well! Initially Coach Adam's attention and praise really put Ava and ease and made her feel right at home. I feel like there was almost no adjustment period for her - the Matakas crew became her "family" immediately! Prof Chris made this an extremely comfortable setting to express/voice any concerns or questions. I appreciate the attention and the professionalism. Ava is so excited to become a Jr Coach. Jiu Jitsu has become such a huge part of our life and I wouldnt want it any other way. We are so happy to be a part of this positive, happy environment. The tournament was so fun, loved every moment !
I signed up a month ago and I've enjoyed every second. Everyone has treated me with respect and welcomed me with open arms. Right away I could feel this gym was a family and if you're willing to learn and give it your best everyone at matakas will be right there to guide you through your journey. The best jujutsu academy I have ever been to! My five-year-old, seven-year-old, myself, and my husband all attend. The environment is very disciplined and impeccably clean. The people and coaches are amazing, fostering a supportive and motivating atmosphere for all ages. Highly recommend!
Our experience with Matakas Jiu Jitsu has been nothing but AMAZING!! When you join this gym you are joining a family! My 6 yr old son has been here for almost a year and has grown so much in mind, body and strength! They are constantly in movement, practicing new techniques and fine tuning old ones. There are so many friendships to be had and wonderful coaches that help to lead and guide these kids. We started in the Tiny Tykes program and promoted to the Youth Program in the time we were here. Only reason we are leaving is because we are military and leaving for a new assignment.
Both of my daughters and I have been attending classes weekly for some time now and love it. One is extremely outgoing, my little one a bit on the shyer side. Coaches Adam and Felix have been pivotal in keeping my eldest engaged and harnessing her wildness into a focused confident student and friend. Coaches Emma and Emily have exercised beautiful patience and inclusion with my little one, helping her feel herself and become this little brave woman. Matakas has become engrained in my family’s daily being, and we all couldn’t be more grateful. The instructors are top notch, the lessons are detailed and any questions you have get addressed and worked over until you’ve got your answer. The mats are clean and friendly, and the words and philosophy of professor Chris really come to be as you train here. It’s a beautiful thing.
My son has been going here and he likes Coach Dan. & Coach Dean. They are always very encouraging and he enjoys their classes. Professor Chris is always so welcoming. The whole place makes you feel very welcomed . It’s like a close family. I would recommend Matakas Jiu Jitsu to build confidence and learn a lifetime skill, while meeting new friends.

My son Noah has been doing Jiu Jitsu with Matakas for about a year now. He used to get picked on at school. Since joining Jiu Jitsu his confidence has soared. He’s gotten in much better shape and he no longer gets picked on at school. All the coaches are really supportive and great role models.

I have been to a lot of jujitsu schools, MMA schools, and boxing gyms. none have made martial arts in both the self-defense and sport aspect as obtainable in such a friendly and welcoming environment for both kids and adults
Started my journey with the female self defense class. Matakas is so welcoming that I started taking regular classes. Have been taking classes for over a year and a half and enjoy it as much as the day I started. Great staff and environment!
I have been training with Professor Chris Matakas since July 1st of 2021 after my friend and co-worker, Coach Daniel McCool spoke highly of Professor Matakas and his Academy. I have been practicing martial arts since I was 8 years old, and my teacher passed away due to cancer in September of 2020. Plagued with injuries and lacking motivation, I showed up to the Academy and I am super happy that I did. Professor Chris Matakas is a great instructor but most of all he is a great friend. My body has been healing quickly, my mind is sharper, I have a great circle of friends and I have the opportunity of giving back to the community by teaching the next generation of grapplers.”
My 7yr old’s been going to Matakas for about 2.5 years and loves going; 5 days a week for youth classes gives him plenty of time to train as much as he wants. All the coaches are great at being patient with the kids and explaining things in a way they can understand, but push them to be focused, disciplined and train hard when they need to be encouraged. Again, very welcoming and awesome environment for the kids - if my son didn’t play other sports he’d use the extra free time training even more throughout the year.
Matakas Jiu Jitsu is the place where you want your child to participate. I first enrolled Charlotte in November 2022. It has been such a positive and rewarding learning experience ever since. She was in the tykes class for a year and competed and won an in house tournament which was one of my proudest memory as Charlottes father. Since this past November, she is in the youths class where she continues to learn and grow.
Charlotte has wonderful teammates that she trains with and respects. She also has brilliant, effective and caring coaches that ensures that each student excels and gets the best possible outcome. Every student is given the mental and physical tools for building a strong foundation and become future productive members of society.
Lastly, Professor Chris is the steady presence who ensures that all the students are given an educational and Appropriate learning environment. He has such a great calm demeanor and always greets everyone when they enter the building with a handshake and kind regards. He gives motivational speeches and instills confidence in his students. The coaches are fantastic and attentive including Coach Emma who Charlotte loves and coach Dan, Adam (so funny!) , Felix, Emily and all the assistant coaches.
I recommend anyone to come in and sign up for a great experience. Your child will gain confidence and knowledge in every class they take.
I can’t say enough amazing comments about Matakas Jiu-Jitsu. My boys have been attending classes for 2 years now and the patience the professor and coaches have it’s truly heart warming. Especially with my little guy in the tikes class who really requires discipline. Coaches take the time to develop focus. And for my big guy who is in the youth class, they take there time to perfect their skills which helped my son develop confidence, persistence, and determination.

I've been training with Matakas for about six years now. I have trained at multiple schools across the country over the years and I can say with confidence that this is the best gym that I have ever trained at.

The training is extremely high quality, consistently fine tuning the basic fundamentals of jiu-jitsu and always exploring the endles amount of skills and techniques throughout the entire jiu-jitsu community. I started jiujitsu at Matakas in 2021 after taking a womens self defense seminar and was hooked on being able to learn a multitude of self defense tactics since. Being a girl in this environment may seem intimidating but I have always felt welcome ever since I stepped on the mat (thats also of course with the help of the many other awesome girls on the mat!). The coaches, and of course Professor Chris Matakas himself, are sincere and genuinely want to help you develop your skills every class. Even the more senior guys are willing to mentor as well which is awesome. This is an amazing Jiu Jitsu school. Not only do you have highly skilled professors and peers, but it is a great atmosphere. This is the only jiu jitsu school my son will attend as not only do they teach you how to be a great practitioner on the mat, but assist in translating to being a better person off the mat.
I have no regrets joining Matakas Jiu Jitsu. The environment created by the coaches and students is very welcoming and im never embarrassed to ask questions. The lessons learned on the mat have also helped me in every day life. If you are even slightly curious about BJJ this school is a great place to start!

We started going to Matakas BJJ in July 2019 as a family and it’s been a fantastic journey so far! To start, the academy is an extremely friendly and welcoming environment that allows people off the street with no martial arts experience (that’s us!) to try Jiu Jitsu in a no stress setting. Additionally the instructors are friendly, approachable, and helpful in aiding you reach your goals, whether it’s self defense or fitness based. Finally, the intangible changes you’ll see in yourself or your kids will be that self confidence increases, patience will improve, and the sport will make you more humble! Our 3 daughters have been training at Matakas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for a year now and it's been the best decision we ever made. My husband also has been a member since 2019 and till now has nothing but positive things to say. We love coming here everyday and the kids look forward to the classes. That being said, Matakas BJJ is the type of community, tribe, family you want to join and surround yourself with. Professor Chris Matakas & his team of Coaches are one of the best human beings we've ever encountered. Not only are they knowledgeable in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, their techniques show they are experts in this field. Matakas BJJ provides a safe and clean environment to train. The academy has a way of welcoming you and making you feel comfortable. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. The step by step instructions and guidance they provide during classes is above and beyond! Coach Dan, Coach Emma, Coach Adam, and Coach Jim just to name a few are one of the best resources available at Matakas to help you reach your goals. Professor Chris, is an outstanding instructor. The coaches and everyone else here are always super friendly and helpful. I started jiujitsu as a way to get off the couch. And here I am 3 or so years later more confident and healthier than I once was. And I owe that all to Matakas Jiujitsu Academy.

Honestly was super nervous to even step foot inside but it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. One free trial class and I was hooked. I am happy to share my experience at Matakas Jiu Jitsu that I had today. I came in with my family to tryout (first trial class is free). I have to say it was a great experience for me and my family. They offer women’s only self defense and empowerment class as well. They have classes for little kids, older kids, and adults. I have family members at all levels and everyone enjoyed it. Needless to say I registered all of my family. All coaches and students were great and everyone was encouraging. It was a very positive experience in a friendly environment all around.

Matakas Jiu Jitsu make all classes both challenging and fun for kids. The professor and coaches are highly professional and do an excellent job of teaching kids and adults the fundamentals of jiu jitsu while keeping the classes entertaining and engaging.
During classes the instructors are actively engaged with the students demonstrating techniques, providing feedback and giving one-on-one instruction.
This hands-on approach is incredibly effective in helping students learn and grow while building confidence and discipline.

Even though I've moved on from this academy, it has honestly become a benchmark for caliber of instruction. Chris keeps up on the most up to date techniques while keeping an eye on the hard nosed Gracie basics that made the art famous. He has a complete skill set. While both passing and playing guard he exhibits the characteristics of a world class player. His nogi perspective is one of total comprehension of position and pace while keeping focus on temp and timing. If you have a good temperament for sports and wish to really be educated this is an amazing place to start or finish. His classes more resemble a lecture style set up rather than tradition bjj classes. He really makes an attempt at giving you something properly curated rather than thrown together. 10 out of ten

I learned very early that Matakas BJJ is a genuine community. Each student takes some meaaure of responsibility for the teaching of each other.
It is extremely helpful that the advanced students regularly and eagerly attend the "all-levels" classes. It benefits the less experienced members to work with them and it gives the advanced members an opportunity to return to the basics.
We love Matakas and so thankful we found it! The coaches like Coach Emma, Dan, and Adam are so wonderful with kids. They teach them such important skills such as discipline, focus, and respect. And it is so much fun! I highly recommend Matakas for all kids!
Matakas BJJ is an outstanding academy all around! Prof. Chris and the coaches are all knowledgeable and welcoming. The community and support within the academy is next level. Our son was the first on the mats to address confidence and impulsivity and the coaches are such great influences on him and demonstrate such patience. I was next to follow by attending their Women’s Self Defense/ Power in Pink and then join the mats. It is such an empowering feeling but was also a little scary. The team gets right behind you. My husband joined after taking sometime away from BJJ and was welcomed back with enthusiasm. We can’t wait for our daughter to get out on the mat. We love this community and the growth it has given to our family as a whole.
Highly recommend this academy for anyone in the area. My husband started this past year and in December we enrolled our oldest girl (6yrs old) and she fell in love. They offer four tyke classes a week and she never lets us miss one. With the help of the coaches we even got our youngest (4yrs old) who is much more shy to join in. Special thank you to Coach Emma and Coach Dan for helping her gain the confidence and feel safe + welcomed to keep at it. Now both of our girls enjoy going to each class to continue learning. Matakas is our second home. All the coaches are extremely helpful and the team fosters a genuine family like atmosphere, where kindness and sportsmanship prevail. The Tykes program is awesome and personally I enjoy the adult program several times a week. Get in shape, lose unwanted lbs, learn to defend yourself! This place is awesome.
I trained at Matakas Jiu Jitsu as a brown belt. Coming from another academy can be a weird situation, but Professor Matakas made me feel welcome immediately. He's very knowledgeable and the training is fun. I highly recommend him to anyone in the area.
At 44yrs old I started my journey at this academy 2 years ago, honestly, to get a friend to leave me alone about jiu-jitsu. I'll never tell him, but it's quite possibly the best thing I've ever done for myself. This academy has such welcoming and supportive environment it's easy to forget your daily stress and just enjoy life, if only for an hour of the day. It starts from the top with Professor Chris, who greets you with a smile every time you walk in the door, and filters to the coaches, who are more than willing to share their knowledge in a supportive way. Professor Chris Matakas runs a superb academy in the Northern Burlington County area. The space is clean and simple with a focus on having a good community. He is a superb and passionate instructor with a strong focus on fundamental Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) principles and techniques. I have been training BJJ for 19 years and I highly recommend training here if you're in the Florence and Bordentown area. They have a great and most importantly healthy training environment.
They were welcoming and knowledgeable with different levels of experience. They take all safety measures in regards to Covid or illness protocol. Fundamentals class it taught in conjunction with the art and physical application. Great choice.

The best martial arts experience I’ve had. The coaches and students are all extremely supportive and friendly. I joined to lose weight and the school has exceeded my expectations for that. The positive atmosphere has me attending more classes per week than I thought I would when I signed up and getting a great workout in every time.
My son has been going for over a year now and loves it. The youth program really provides confidence and skills that are useful at school, in sports, and everyday life. Professor Chris has created a family atmosphere and is definitely an asset to his community.
Matakas Jiu Jitsu is world class. I have traveled around and visited many Jiu Jitsu academies and MBJJ is by far the best in my opinion. Phenomenal teaching, clean facilities, a welcoming community and a friendly goal-oriented culture. MBJJ is great for beginners and all skill levels. I highly recommend visiting.
What Professor Matakas and the staff have created at Matakas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is truly special. As an student in the Adult program the physical benefits are clearly evident in my ~40 pound weight loss. Mentally I am more focused and have a greater disciple in many aspects of my life. In terms of Professor Chris and his instructor team teaching children, I personally cannot wait until my son is of age to take part in their excellent teaching. My children (8 and 6) have been going to Matakas BJJ for over a year. Professor Matakas has created an excellent family based environment. He and his instructors do a wonderful job of keeping the kids motivated and engaged, something not easily done with such young kids. Professor Matakas goes above and beyond making you feel comfortable training if you have never tried Jiu Jitsu. He makes sure you fully understand the techniques he is teaching and articulates very clearly on the mat. Because of the environment, I kept coming back and now I am hooked. At the current moment there are tons of options when it comes to fitness, programs for children, personal development and martial arts. I have been going here since the school's inception and I can tell you it is the place to be. The instructor team is fantastic with lots of one on one time. The kids in the kids classes are growing up to be world class humans with responsibilities and respect learned through discipline on the mat. Bjj is for everyone, i encourage you to try it. The hardest part is walking through the door.
Chris and his teachers are amazing with the kids and adults. My kids both started in the kids class and now moved up to the juniors and the continuously improve, not only physically but also mentally. I decided to take the plunge and start myself. While tough at first, I continued pushing myself and I’ve made drastic changes. I’ve become more focused at work and at home and have become a better person in these short 6 months. Also dropped about 25 lbs and physically feel 10 years younger. I HIGHLY recommend Matakis for any age. You won’t regret the decision.
Professor Chris has done a great job establishing a family-friendly self-defense program. The atmosphere is so warm and comfortable and it makes the training process seem so easy. The fact that his Mats are packed says a lot about what they are offering.
Chris Matakas and his staff are amazing instructors! Excellent with the kids. Very patient, always very friendly. We have been members here for over a year now and really can’t say enough good things about this place! My children have learned so much from Matakas BJJ. They learn so much from this school and not just the BJJ martial art but also have increased confidence in the things they do and increased focus in life. And Chris is really great with the kids (did I mention that lol!). We love it there!
Being a BJJ practitioner that travels alot with the military I have the privilege of learning from various professors and seeing alot of BJJ schools.
First and foremost the school is super clean and sanitary. The students and instructors are approachable and friendly. The school is a true BJJ school. If your looking for a tap or die MMA mentality this school is not going to be for you. The school focuses in on safety and fundamentals.
Both days I was there Professor Matakas was present. He is a postive coach who strikes the balence between positive reinforcement and corrective action.
Overall if your looking for a positive family friendly enivorment where you learn BJJ techniques this is great school for you.

I recommend MBJJ 100%. My daughter takes classes and she loves it. Professor Chris and his staff are amazing with kids. With the help of his coaches, like Dan and Mike, he delivers powerful messages along with training and perseverance. He also makes it fun for everybody. Professor Chris is engaging with everyone that attends. He’s an amazing coach and all around terrific person. I can’t say enough good things about the school and the people there.
I want to learn as much as I can from Professor Mitakas. His pure desire to make this world a better place shows with every positive interaction he has had with my son. He has focused on the positive and joy of my 5 year old instead of the difficulties he has had. P. Chris has motivated me how to feed my child to ensure my son’s body works it’s best. Perhaps the best part is the off the matt challenges such as cleaning your room or eating green. As I said, I am excited to be a part of Professor Chris’s circle because we are all better people to train with and know him.
I had the pleasure of visiting the Matakas Jiu Jitsu Academy while in the area for a wedding and had a great experience. Professor Matakas is very kind and welcoming and his academy has lots of spaces to sit for watching the classes along with three restrooms for changing if you come directly from work. The warmup is thorough and a solid workout in its own right that will make sure you are ready for class without pulling a muscle or getting injured. The class was structured beginning with a self defense takedown followed by successive guard sweeps and passes and lastly the submissions. The details of each technique are very thorough and by the end of the instruction we had a complete flow that allowed us to chain the techniques together and build effective muscle memory. At this academy you will get expert instruction in a clean, family friendly environment that places student safety above all else. I highly recommend Matakas Jiu Jitsu Academy for adults and children alike!
The teaching's you will learn here for on and off the mat are amazing. It also shows through the students that train and learn here. I am so happy that my son and I found and can enjoy this journey together.
