If you’re local or just in town visiting, check this place out! James and his team are very welcoming and train hard. I’ll definitely be back the next time I’m in the area. Many thanks to these guys!
I visited Savannah from out of town and was looking for a place to train for the week. It was a great experience. I dropped in and got right to training within a couple minutes after signing the waiver. The instruction was executed very well and had plenty of details but simple enough to implement right away. The room had plenty of talent to get solid work if you’re a competitor. James is a talented instructor who makes every concept very easy to understand and apply. Gracie Jiu Jitsu has a great atmosphere and everyone was very friendly. If I lived in Savannah this would be my home gym.
It took us about 3 months to not only get settled in but research and tour bjj gyms after our relocation to Savannah. There is a reason why we drive 40 mins out to Savannah for our kids to train at Gracie gym and it is because of this amazing coach, Jimmy. If you are looking for a gym with a coach that not only cares about his students but genuinely enjoy being around kids, this is the place. Highly recommend.
Great place to train. From the top down, everyone is very welcoming. Everyone who trains there is happy to share what they know and there is a healthy culture of learning together and keeping your partners safe. James’ BJJ knowledge is world-class.
Stopped in to train while on vacation. The gym has a good atmosphere & very welcoming people. James lead a great class with good instruction! Definitely check it out if you’re in the area.
I stopped by Jan 2024 to train at the leg lock class and open mat on a Sunday. I messaged on IG to see if it was cool to come by, and he responded quick. James was very welcoming, and the technique was modern - we studied cross ashi and entries to the passing sequences. We all rolled after - James has a fun and traditional style of jiu jitsu and he was friendly during our warm up roll. I rolled with 2 other black belts and both were kind, skilled, and exchanged some knowledge with me.
Thanks for a great drop in!!
Excellent. My 6-year-old son and I stopped in from out of town for him to do a little training. You could not ask for better instructors. Coach Jimmy is a superb black belt and a highly skilled communicator with adults and youngsters. Go train there. I would for sure if I lived in the area.
James, Hannah, and Brie are absolutely phenomenal individually, and collectively. There is personal investment here, y’all. Your experience matters…especially as a women. Do NOT be afraid to approach these three about any concerns or limitations you may have. As a psychotherapist, I would recommend this for management with trauma, stress, empowerment, fitness, self-worth and overall wellness. I cannot express this enough… Gracie Jiujitsu is very highly recommended.
This gym has it all! The facilities are clean, they have lots of mat space and the instructors are very knowledgeable. Besides all of the amenities the people are the deciding factor anytime I choose a gym and everyone here is very welcoming and friendly.
Great people go where great people go! This place is filled with great black belt instructors and cool members. If you’re in the area, highly recommended!
This is a amazing place to train. Solid and talented students and instructors. If you are looking to get started on your Jiu Jitsu journey or looking for a new home then this is the one. Go and check it out!
Amazing level of instruction in a very professional and friendly environment. Had the opportunity to train with James and his students while visiting from Oregon. If you are thinking of checking out this gym I highly recommend stopping by they have a welcoming environment for beginners and veterans of the art.
James runs a great school. The technique and showmanship of what is taught is world class. I came from a local school that was constantly against my body size of being an Ultra heavy and at times limiting my game and progression. In my time at Gracie i haven't heard anything about my weight or size and it also not being held against me. Its great to be at school that appreciates what you can bring to the table instead of using it against you.
Been a member of this gym for many years now and still today I’m treated with respect and love from every student, if anyone is looking to learn the art I’d highly recommend this establishment, from the very beginning you’re taught to train injury free and safe. 100%
I haven’t trained at this academy, but Professor James Finizio stopped in and shared some techniques and rolls with myself and my students. Excellent instruction and some nice little details that I hadn’t seen before. And he was just a genuinely nice guy as well. If his visit was any indication of what you’d find at his academy then I definitely recommend this spot.
Jimmy is such a great coach for the kids! The lessons are focused on being a good person as well as the jiu jitsu skills which is so nice to see. Jimmy is super patient and kind and I can’t recommend these classes enough.

Talented staff. Abundance of classes and schedule options. Amazing feeling of community 👏
Great instruction and technique, I’ve trained for 14+ years with some of the biggest names and this dojo by far has some of the greatest instruction I’ve ever gotten. Great community, so happy to have found this place for not only myself but my children who train here as well!

Outstanding. Instruction on techniques and mechanics are top notch.
I have been a student at this school since Jan 2021, and I am so happy that I chose this school over the other options in town. James is a great teacher of an amazing martial art, and the community of people and the brotherhood felt at this school is priceless!!
Went to this place to get back in shape. Was pleasantly suprised by the community in the gym. Everyone is helpful and inviting and just wanting to be better. And it all starts at the top with James. You can tell he enjoys bjj and teaching it to people but it's the atmosphere in the gym that's the most important part of the place for me. We all need a community and this place gives it to you
I recently moved to North Carolina from Savannah. So far I have been to three different places and none of them come close in comparison to Gracie Jiu Jitsu Savannah. My experience with these other Jiu Jitsu gyms has made it clear that the business professor James has built is truly something special. The quality of instruction James provides, along with his detailed understanding of Jiu Jitsu is extremely rare. The atmosphere at GJJSAV is next level. The care for the facility is a detail that the gyms I have been to don’t reciprocate. GJJSAV has a proud community, one that most people long to be a part of. I consider myself lucky to have been apart of it. GJJSAV will be the standard I compare all others to from here on out. I want to thank James, the staff and the students for making this a great Jiu Jitsu experience for me. I’m looking forward to my next trip back. If you’re looking for Jiu Jitsu in Savannah this is the best place to go.
Dropped in for a few days while on a work trip in Savannah. Im often skeptical of schools that carry the "Gracie Jiu Jitsu" badge, but decided to give this school a chance... and I'm super glad I did! The environment was warm and welcoming, and there was no shortage of great rolls. There's a ton of students at all levels ranging from casual hobbyists to avid competitors.
The instruction was excellent. The head instructor James has a talent for breaking jiu jitsu down to its most basic concepts and building the techniques up from there. Even with 10+ years of experience under my belts I left feeling like I learned something every day.
Don't hesitate to check out this gym if you're looking for good bjj in Savannah.
Been part of the gym since January 2019. I was new to jiu jitsu and felt welcome right away. James Finizio is a phenomenal teacher and has built a community of where we all look out for each other. Wish I would have experienced this as a kid. Jiu jitsu has been great for physical fitness and stress relief.
The best instruction, training partners, and people you could ask for. The longer I train here, the more I appreciate the opportunity to train under James and in the environment he has created that supports and helps us all to grow and learn safely. James really makes sure that Jiu Jitsu is for everyone.
Been meaning to get back in jiu-jitsu for quite awhile now and kept finding an excuse not to. Finally went down and sat in on a class to see the atmosphere. Was enough for me to pay my year upfront. Felt welcome here from day 1 and look forward to progressing here. Thanks for all the help
Great gym with amazing people have met some of the best people I know in this gym. First off James the instructor is a top of the line teacher who gives amazing instruction from beginner to advanced and I highly recommend anyone who is interested in jiu jitsu in the Savannah area to come train at Gracie Jiu Jitsu !
Such an incredible experience. I was able to train this past Saturday with Professor James and his students while passing through Savannah on vacation. Everyone was welcoming and I immediately felt at home. I also was able to arrange a private the following morning to revisit the previous days lesson. With Professor James direction I was able to fine tune the lesson and certain specifics that I had overlooked. I highly suggest not only stopping in for a class but taking a private. I will be back to Savannah and I will make sure that I have more than just 2 days to train. Thank you again to Gracie Jiujitsu Savannah for sharing the mat with me.
GJJSav was amazing. The whole crew is very welcoming and treat you as one of their own from the get-go. Best place to train at when you’re in Savannah.
Highly recommend!!!
Gracie BJJ Savannah is first rate! I know what you’re thinking. These guys choke people and break arms, how can I do this? Well, the reality is that this is a family. James, the owner and head instructor, makes sure everyone is safe and has a completely positive experience. Try one class, you won’t regret it.
James Finizio is an outstanding instructor and friend. All of his students are very welcoming and passionate for jiu jitsu. I highly recommend trying out his academy.
Hands down the best BJJ gym in the area. The environment and energy that Coaches James and Jimmy promote is the perfect balance of competitiveness and positive encouragement... and the kid's program is top-notch.
All skill levels will feel welcome here!
Learning a practical, physical skill set to practice and apply for your entire life is a great thing to pursue, and Gracie Jiu Jitsu Savannah is the best place to learn! People who visit from other schools or areas are always commenting on how precise and expert the teaching style is with James. Jiu Jitsu is a gentle, non-striking, but extremely effective form of self-defense and caters to all ages and genders. This school focuses heavily on the practicality of fundamentals and self-defense. We drill real-life scenarios and learn how to respond to the dynamics of an actual physical altercation. By applying what we learn while training in a controlled and safe environment, we are able to confidently apply what we learn during sparring sessions. Learning self-defense moves is great, but applying them with a resisting partner is what increases your ability to handle situations in the real world. If you ‘don’t like to fight’, then knowing how to stop one is precisely how Jiu Jitsu can help you. Most people don’t look for altercations, but being prepared for the unknown is key!
I was hesitant to try Jiu Jitsu at first, then walked in and was able to attend a few sessions at no cost. Jimmy (co-instructor) and James (head instructor and owner) were very welcoming and knowledgeable. The experience exceeded expectations. I paid for a full year after my 2nd class. It is phenomenal!
Savannah Gracie Jiu Jitsu will teach you the most fundamental techniques of self-defense that are most important to learn. The gym is a low-injury school and you also go at your own pace. Train easy or hard, and compete if you’d like or not. This is a wonderful community of people who make you feel welcome from day 1! Very high recommendation!
I have trained in many gyms in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee - including with some big name coaches - James is the best that I have ever seen hands down. I am proud to be there and part of the family.
This is hand down the best jiu jitsu instruction that one can receive in this region. The team that trains here is eclectic, polite, and encouraging. The gym is clean. I would recommend this gym to anyone ten time over, and I do.
I'm not a friend of the owner. He's my mentor. But he's fair and a great instructor. Just as important, the other students have a great and sticking culture. Lots of white vents are a good sign that this is a place to grow.
Awesome place. Awesome people. Looked like really good, respectable training. The owner James was very involved, you could tell he cared about giving everyone his attention and training. I sat comfortably on their couch and watched mostly. oh and their bathrooms are clean too, always important.
New to the area came in for first day of class had a blast very Welcoming gym would highly recommend other to train here look forward to getting back in to bjj at this gym.
I come to the Savannah area yearly from out of state to visit family. My brother has been involved with jujitsu for the past few years and has encouraged me to try it out for awhile now. I was very intimidated and worried about trying jujitsu on my own back home, so when I came to the Savannah area I tried the school my brother trains at. I ended up truly enjoying my first experience! I went to a Saturday morning class with my brother and felt the unity and family feel of all the people training. It was at no point awkward or uncomfortable. I liked my first experience so much I attended two more classes the following Monday. I was new to a few warm ups prior to class but immediately the instructor, a brown belt, and my brother helped me through the moves. Once the second class began it was meant for advanced students. However, it was made clear all students could attend any class and was very welcoming. I am a young woman in college and found my three classes to be extremely empowering and helpful for beginner self defense. I plan to continue back home! I would highly recommend this school to anyone male or female of any age. It truly is its own community and offers plenty to those willing to learn!
I started here 5 months ago and it was one of the greatest decisions I've ever made. Not only does the instructor ensure a friendly and safe training environment, but the instruction itself is one-of-a-kind. Highly recommended for anyone who not only wants to know jiu-jitsu, but understand it as well.
I feel so lucky to have found jiu jitsu, and especially this gym. There is such a welcoming, positive culture there and it has pushed me mentally, physically, and spiritually. I have played sports all my life and the coach; James Finizio is one of the best coaches I have ever had. He is completely acceptable to anyone who is interested in jiu jitsu, and has an increadable knowledge and philosophy about the sport. I have been training for a little over a year and a half and highly suggest that ANYONE who is interested give it a shot. You will never look back.
Training at James’s school was the best part of my summer in Savannah! Great rolls all around and an emphasis on detailed instruction and drilling. I really appreciated the amount of classes and rolling time provided and feel like I improved substantially during the few months I trained there. Will be visiting GJJ Savannah everytime I am in town!
There are a lot of talented and well trained martial artists at Gracie Jiu-jitsu Savannah. Everyone is very encouraging, friendly, and welcoming. The knowledge you will receive and friends you'll make are priceless. In my opinion this is the best martial arts school in the Savannah area. I would recommend training there if you are interested in learning realistic self defense in an uplifting environment filled with great people who truly care about one another.
Very few choices in my life have been as beneficial as joining this gym. I know that may sound dramatic, but it’s not. It’s been good for my physical health, mental health, spiritual health, even good for my marriage. The instructor there, James Finizio, is an incredible teacher. He’s able to make techniques at all levels of difficulty understandable and his pedagogy is the most welcoming. If your thinking about getting into martial arts this is the place. I guarantee it.
James finizio is a great instructor and I really liked his gym. I trained there for a year and a half and it was really a great experience. Hopefully at some point in the near future I can come back and train with everyone again!!
GJJ Savannah is wonderful gym for anyone interested in jiu jitsu training. The instructor is always helpful and very knowledgable. A great place to train.
New Years resolutions are cool and all, but if you’re really looking to get in shape, meet awesome people, increase your confidence, or any of the other standard “this is my year” type of things, training BJJ is your best bet, and there’s no better place to train than Gracie Savannah. The environment is incredibly inviting, and everyone is more interested in helping others learn than stroking their own egos. James, the instructor, presents the lessons in a very clear and detailed fashion, and is always open to answering questions and helping each individual learn. James’ passion is reflected in the attitudes of his students, who are all there to help each other get better. Everyone treats each other like family, which creates an incredible vibe as we all work together to become harder to kill.
Welcoming atmosphere and world class instruction. From beginner to advanced training this is certainly the best gym in Savannah for jiujitsu and self defense.
If you have ever wanted to train Jiu-Jitsu but are hesitant to start this gym is, in my opinion, your best option. The instructor is knowledgeable and the environment is welcoming to new comers. Deff check it out.
I trained here when I was in the Army. Professor James took me in like family. When I came back to Chicago I had so much trouble finding a Jiu Jitsu establishment that came even close to Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Savannah. Truly a place like nowhere else to get quality rolling in and learn the true mechanics of BJJ. If I still lived in the area, there’s no doubt I would still be training here. 5 stars and highly recommended.
Love this gym! If your from out of town stop by and train! Gracie Jiu-jitsu Savannah's positive atmosphere and community had fostered a great training environment that welcomes everyone. Dont be shy, come train!
No experience and looking for a new challenge, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu welcomed me in.
James and Jimmy worked with me and made sure I was catching the fundamentals and the other blue / purple belts introduced themselves and taught me what they knew instead of just showing me how good they were.
There’s usually big egos that come with sports like this- GJJ is a great place to be new, learn the fundamentals, and grow...
I’m tired, sore, and I cannot wait to go back every time!!
I have had the pleasure of training with the head instructor James Finizio several times at different training camps. His instruction is top notch. He is great at breaking down and explaining technique at all levels. I look forward to visiting his academy in the future. There is no doubt where I would be training if I were in the Savannah area.
I just recently started training here about a month ago and WOW! The people there are amazing, especially the instructor, James. Hands down the best gym in town and anyone interested in BJJ should totally come check it out!
Was in Savannah for about 4 months and I made my way around to all the BJJ schools in the area. Ended up choosing this school as my go to- James Finzio is an excellent educator, they have great availability, and I still keep in touch with some of the guys from time to time. I look back fondly on my time here and I hope you will too.
On vacation in Savannah for 3 days, we emailed this gym ahead of time coming from NC. Got a great friendly response and was told to come on in. I trained Tuesday night in the advanced class and then again today for the lunch class. Amazing clear instructions for drills, professor is spot on with his detail and enthusiasm to help everyone. Truly a great structure and curriculum put in place and good hard rolling at the end of each class. Very clean and friendly gym, no egos everyone was eager to help, drill and roll with me and I felt part of the gym as soon as I got on the mat. Highly recommend this gym the professor and students are great, plenty of variety as far as belt ranks to train with. I will definitely be back as soon as I can!!
We love the atmosphere of respect and learning at GJJS! The youth instructor, Jimmy is fabulous! Jimmy, is a very patient instructor. He teaches the kids how to defend themselves without being confrontational. I'm glad that my son is learning how to diffuse a fight, and learning that he can confidently defend himself, if he has to.
Dropped in while on vacation in Savannah, always a plus when there isn’t a ridiculous drop in fee like some of the gyms I’ve visited. Friendly environment with high level instruction. Can tell the instructor really cares about the bjj community. Some good rolls with some good folks
A great place for first timers. I walked in on a recommendation from a friend 2 years ago and was quickly welcomed. James creates a fun atmosphere with a priority on safety and functional defensive moves. He also has a fantastic kids class. I can’t say enough good things, definitely worth checking out.
For those considering the opportunity to enter into the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, please read this!
Savannah Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, owned and operated by Pedro Sauer black belt James Finizio, offers world-class instruction in a remarkably friendly environment, suitable for both beginners and advanced alike. Ask anyone who has attended the classes there and you will find that the feedback is consistent: James is an outstanding teacher. Not only is he an outstanding teacher, but he is an absolute phenom on the mat. In a world filled with less-than-stellar "black belts", James is the real deal.
Side note: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an extremely effective martial art. Please don't be offended when I say that many people have a sour taste in their mouths due to the infamous "mcdojo". You might know these places and may have even trained at one before. These are basically confidence building classes with a few questionably effective moves thrown in here and there. Pay your money, show up once in a while, and get your belts. If that is what you are looking for, you do you, but you should probably reconsider this new path you are exploring. Any stripe or belt you receive from James will take a back seat to the very real satisfaction you feel from actually learning more about your body and, more importantly, yourself. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, when practiced correctly, is as challenging as it is rewarding.
I should probably end my review here as I could go on forever about how great this school is. James won't say it, but its the best in the area. I live in Pooler, but there are people that drive all the way from Springfield to attend his classes. They really are that good. The people are great, ranging from 15 to 65 (don't be afraid! I assure you, somebody there will reflect your own circumstances). Oh, and if you have kids, drop by for one of the children's classes. Jimmy, Jame's righthand man, has some of the best pure Jiu-Jitsu around and is great with the kids. The skills they acquire here carry on in very practical ways for the rest of their lives.

This is a great place to learn jui-jitsu at all levels. James does a great job and explaining techniques and teaching you to be an expert at the fundamentals of Jui- Jitsu. I was accepted with open arms when I began training here. I love the people and community. Great for all ages and genders.
Anybody actually interested in learning the technical art of one of the most effective martial arts out there should check this space out. Having trained for more than a decade, I can assure you this academy offers some of the best instruction you're likely to find in the area
This is such an awesome school to be apart of. There is such a great sense of family and friendship. From the first day I showed up I felt like I was truly welcome. James is an incredible teacher and his love for Jiu jitsu is very evident in the way he teaches.
Jiu jitsu has changed my life.
And I have James, and GGJ Savannah to thank for that!
Amazing gym and the people are just like the gym. The atmosphere and the instructor James Finizio makes this a great jiu jitsu school for beginners and advanced rollers. I’ve trained at several schools and this one has been my favorite so far. Anybody interested should definitely suggest going here.
I am traveling through Georgia and decided to do a week trial here. I am at the intermediate level. The coach - James, has a level head and knows techniques well. The moves are explained and demonstrated in depth, especially for those starting. The students are friendly with eachother and make you feel welcome. After sparring it is brothers, handshakes and hugs. I suggest checking this place out if you are interested in martial arts and in Savannah!
Excellent place to learn and train. I dropped in from out of town and was quickly welcomed here. James is a great instructor and all his student were very helpful and friendly. Really fantastic, high level instruction. Highly recommended!
I absolutely love this place! I've been going here for almost 2 years now and I'm truly impressed with not only the instructor but the other students and friends you make a long the way. Great atmosphere with large mat space and the instructor James does an incredible job conveying his message. Highly Recommend!
I love BJJ and this gym. I was hesitant to try jiu jitsu at first, but love that I did and love that I found James, this gym, and the community here. After trying a few BJJ gyms in the area, it was clear that this was the one for me. James is an awesome teacher. He breaks down and demonstrates the moves several times before having us drill them. Then, while we are drilling, he (and others in the gym) provide help with figuring out the moves in a way that is easy to understand. James also fosters a safe environment to learn and enjoy jiu jitsu. The people at the gym are also great and are always willing to help each other grow and gain more knowledge. I strongly recommend this gym.
As a beginner at age 45, I was hesitant to try to come in and learn BJJ. This concern disappeared after my first visit to GJJ Savannah. James and Jimmy are very capable technical instructors who create a welcoming learning environment. Both are available during classes to explain the details of every move as well as demonstrate proper techniques. In addition to this, the experienced students are patient and always seem willing to help teach the lower belts. If you are even thinking about training BJJ, come in and check this place out. If I could give it 6 stars I would.
GJJ Savannah is an incredible place to learn jiu-jitsu. James is a highly detailed and caring teacher. The other members at the gym are enthusiastic and eager to learn. Overall, the gym promotes a strong sense of community, and care for fostering a healthy learning and training environment that is good for the beginner and the seasoned veteran wanting to push theirselves to greater abilities.
You will not find a better Jiu Jitsu school anywhere. Black Belt James Finizio is an awesome instructor breaks down every move he teaches. I’ve been training with James since January 2017 and he and the students at Gracie Jiu Jitsu Savannah have made me a better Jiu Jitsu practitioner.🦄
Very warm and inviting atmosphere, clean floors and facility just to add to the amazing instruction. This place is great if you want to get a good workout or if you just want to be technical. Great for people new to this, everyone will go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Ive been here almost 2 years and love it...addicting!
ve trained several places and this gym is my favorite due to a great mix of socialability & flow in training.
The gym leader, James, most always teaches classes, which isn't the case at a lot of other schools which put that responsibility on the highest ranking student.
James' instruction is seriously well thought-out. The path to the next stripe/belt clear. It's difficult to explain coherently, but James' lessons flow well into one another. At some schools, training is all over the place in terms of techniques or drills, but James focuses on specific things for a couple weeks at a time, as well as their appendages.
For instance, James would announce that we're going to be working on takedowns for a couple of weeks. In that, we'd training take-downs every day, but in a single class we'd train one specific takedown (lets say starting from t-stance (perhaps not the correct term:P)), but then train what to do in several instances. The next day, you might pick up slightly from that, but a tweak on it.
Another very cool thing which can't be understanded is the sociability. Savannah Gracie Jiujitsu attracts people of all kind, big & small, old and young. Your classmates are friends and everyone wants to see one another succeed.
I also especially enjoyed the 'games' we'd play, like "sweep or submit", weapons practice, or sparring with tennis balls in our hands to remove grip from the equation.
A lot of smiles, laughter, serious training and comradre.
The gym trains for combat BJJ more so than sport (IE, no dropping to your knees and ensuring you protect your head at all times) but it's also heavily involved in the sport side, with the team traveling together to tournaments and other events.
If you want to learn practical, highly effective self defense then you should start training with professor James. He is an excellent Jiu-jitsu instructor who cares about making sure you have the tools to defend yourself. Besides learning great self defense you will become more confident and able to handle yourself in all areas of your life. The people at the school are very supportive and helpful. I highly recommend going there no matter what age, gender, race, ect. Everyone is welcome and treated equally.
