Trying to find a place to do martial arts in Kansas City? At Aplomb Martial Arts, we have classes for everyone!
We had our sons 6th Birthday here and Emily was great. There were 20 rowdy boys, but she kept them engaged and having fun the entire time. I would definitely recommend.
A truly great dojo. Mrs. E has been very patient and understanding with my crazy work and travel schedule. They show genuine care and concern for their clients.
This is the first martial arts school our seven-year-old tried and he loves it. Sensei Emily is great with the kiddos.
The classes include martial arts training, but also help kids develop coordination, core strength, and problem solving.
We definitely recommend signing up for the free course to see if your kiddo likes it.
i am so grateful for taking a free intro to Tai Chi class which got me to going to weekly group and private Tai Chi classes. Its has been a life changing experience for me. I have found new freedom of movement where its been painful and stuck for years. AMA in PV is a great place, clean and fun. My sensei is patient, extremely helpful and makes classes enjoyable and fun.
Sensei Emily is fantastic! We've seen such a confidence boost in our son since he's been a member, and he's always excited for each and every class. Fantastic dojo and people!
Throughout quarantine, they've done an amazing job at adjusting classes to be over zoom or outside depending on students comfort levels. It's been wonderful.
I've been working out here for a few years and it's a wonderful group of people. The instructors push you hard but are incredibly friendly and supportive, as are the other students. It's a great experience and I highly recommend it.
The community is fantastic, from the instructors to students. Everyone is friendly and helps push each other to be better, but doesn't ever push anyone to do something they can't do. I can't do the splits, but I can slowly get more flexible, and that's the goal I feel everyone aiming for: a personal 'better' one workout at a time. It's just a fantastic community.
USSD prairie village is amazing! My son has learned so much about balance, respect, strength and is overall a more confident kid in just 6 months. Also, he is so much stronger than he was 6 months ago! Sensei Emily is fantastic with kids: she shows them respect and in response the kids show her respect as well. We love kempo!
Our daughter and son started here at 6 and 4. They have learned so much and they love going! The price is higher than some other places, but you get a lot for the money (classes, private lessons). And they love Sensei Emily!
My two children have been doing Kempo here for almost a year and they love it! I love the self control and perseverance they have gained. It's a great program and Sensei Emily is wonderful with my kids!
My seven year old enjoys practicing here and his ability to focus and concentrate in other areas of his life has improved as well. Highly recommend USSD-Prairie Village for high-energy children in need of an outlet. Sensei Emily and her associates are great with my sometimes challenging child :)
My daughter has gone here for individual and group classes for a few months. She has learned a lot and enjoys the class. I am glad i enrolled her after being bullied . The instructors are very kind and patient teaching the techniques to the kids. I truly do recommend the classes it is very empowering for kids teen and adults.
My son started training at the PV location when he was six. He had a bully, low confidence and was not much into any young sports.
He quickly took to his Sensei and to his training.
Flash forward, he is turning 14 a month and I couldn’t imagine his growth without his training group.
He has amazing strength, his focus is spot on and the ability to control his mood, the environment around him is nothing short of adult level.
Starting I next month my youngest will take his place next to his brother and follow in his same class.
I could not be prouder of the facility, staff and how much it improves little minds.

So thoughtful to all students, down to earth, willing to break down the fundamentals for the kids. I nanny a student and he looks forward to Thursday to come learn! Emily is awesome to Bobby! I recommend Kempo to everyone I know.
I have been taking karate lessons in the USSD system for eight years. I have found it loads of fun and empowering. I am impressed with their system of teaching. Each class has interesting material. The teachers are inspiring. They are considerate of physical limitations. It is very effective exercise. I'm 55 years old. If you are even just slightly interested, I find it hard to imagine anyone regretting giving it a try.
Tie Chi lessons have greatly improved my balance and coordination. The instructors are friendly and provide me with challenges to continue to improve my Tie Chi form.
My son and I are big fans of USSD. We enjoy the family-like atmosphere and the friendly competition. It's a great workout. Not only are you physically challenged, but mentally as well. My son (4 years old) has had great improvement in strength, balance and attentiveness. We love USSD!
We have 3 little kids and they love going to USSD for Kempo. They're learning some great skills, having fun while exercising, and learning the discipline of martial arts. Their instructors are top notch! We purchased a family package, and I've been participating in their Cardio Kick Boxing classes and I've seen more results in the past 3 months from cardio kick boxing.
This school is Wonderful. The my daughter's sensei and her classmates are amazing. Everyone is so positive and Encouraging.Everyone has accepted her for who she is even though she has a disability. I recommend this school to everyone.
I just joined a couple of weeks ago and have been loving every minute of it. The instructors are very professional and truly care about every student. I personally enjoy the classes as a way to stay healthy and challenge myself to learn new techniques.
My son has been attending classes, and private lessons, at USSD - Prairie Village for some time now. The instructors are all very knowledgeable, caring, attentive, great at working with children, and find a good balance between learning and having fun. My son has gained a lot of confidence through these classes, and takes a lot of pride in progressing. Classes are typically small enough that there is a lot of one on one attention, large enough that there are opportunities to work with others and make friends. Would definitely recommend this for parents who are looking to give their children a positive ongoing experience with martial arts.
The senseis care a great deal about their students, teaching them life lessons as well as karate. Amazing place that I cannot recommend more. Ava and Nathan, my kids, have gone for years and they both have learned discipline, perseverance, and confidence along with the physical hard work.
I’m a mom of two young kids that started kempo (karate) after bringing in my then 5 year old for classes back in 2013. A month later I was talked into trying a class and flash forward to now, I’m still at it…almost to black belt! Believe me…if I can do it anyone can. It’s a great way to get in shape that is fun and so much better than the boring treadmill. I don’t have enough good things to say about USSD. First of all…you will not find better instructors in Kansas City. They are amazing, motivating, down to earth, incredible martial artists. And not only are they great instructors for adults but they are really awesome with the kiddos as well. They have a cool program for them with stars and stripes, ninja prizes and of course the belts to keep them motivated along the way. Really well run, clean dojo with awesome friendly people. Highly, highly recommend!
I joined USSD at the Overland Park North location by MicroCenter just after Father's Day 2007. I came looking for a way to get back into shape again, and found a group of people I'm proud to call my second family. My journey has taken me to black belt and along the way, I have had the privilege of learning to be an instructor and then running one of the Kansas City locations. I moved with them from the old Overland Park location to the current location in Prairie Village and have had the opportunity to train at the Brookside and Lenexa locations. If you are considering a martial arts journey, you will find no better location or school to be affiliated with, than what you will find with USSDKC.
USSD has thoughtful and skilled instructors who pair your goals to a mindful workout. Everyone, including participants, work towards creating a positive and supportive environment. Highly recommended to maintain your physical well-being.
I have been a student and part-time teacher at USSD Prairie Village for since Fall, 2007. I started knowing nothing about martial arts and earned my Black Belt 2nd Degree in November of 2016. Two of my sons also train here. The experience has been fantastic, not only for the great workout and self-defense material but also for the family-friendly environment and strong values that form the foundation for USSD. I recommend to all that they join!
I have been training here for a number of years now and absolutely love it! Great blend of karate, kung fu, jiu jistu, and you truly are part of the USSD Family! You get a great workout and always take away something new physically and mentally that you can apply in your day to day life! Positive and fun! Come join us!!!
The instructors here are great!! They want you to succeed and teach you at your own pace. Not once in my ten years of martial arts training have I had a problem here.
The instructors and owners are great here! The first day I went in everyone was so welcoming. I take kickboxing classes here and love it. Janell, my instructor and also the owner, knows how to kick our butts! This is my first ever kickboxing class and I definitely plan on continuing here.
My son has learned so much from the great instructors. They are very focused on the principles as well as safety of the students. Each class schedule is different which keeps the students attention and their interest. My son's self confidence is building as are his skills. His self control is also improving. RK
My son has been attending classes here for about two years and has been progressing great! He participates in private lessons once a week as well as in the classes and he really made great strides. Not only that, but the Sensei (Emily, in particular) have taken a personal interest in making sure that my son not only advances with his skills, but learns responsibility, respect and work ethic. The only reason I didn't give the Studio 5 stars is because of the cost. It is definitely an investment. For example during one month I paid $170 for the lessons, $160 for sparing gear, then had to pay $100 for my son to test for his next belt testing (you have to pay additional cost for every testing). If you had that all up, it is quite the investment for a 9 year old boy. I feel like that cost could discourage kids and parents in community from attending. Also, my son has referred 3 friends to also join because of how much he likes it and there were no referral benefits (not even a thank you) for doing so, which I feel in an usual business practice. But I guess at this point the business is so established, they may not feel like that is necessary.
A good place to build confidence in young kids! The fact that it is conveniently located in the mall setting is a plus for parent to do nails, groceries shopping, or haircut while waiting for the class to end.
if you are looking for the serious self defense, this is not the place.
