Sensei Eddie is a gifted and kind teacher, and the space is super welcoming. There is a nice blend of discipline and fun. My kiddo adores going to classes, and is learning a lot very quickly.
We simply cannot recommend Bridgetown Aikido enough. Sensei Eddie is incredible and has been a really positive and grounding force for our 5.5 year old. The practice of Aikido and full body focus it requires is hard work, and Sensei Eddie is able to create a positive and structured environment that has helped our child thrive in and outside of the dojo. We have really enjoyed our private lessons and have seen so much growth in just the first month.
We enrolled my 5yo arrived with no experience and a lot of challenges with both high energy and impulse control. Sensei Eddie was so welcoming and patient from day one, showing a Nobel Peace Prize worthy balance of tender compassion and firm boundaries as well as a deep expertise in aikido. My son has developed so much confidence, discipline, and sense of responsibility for himself and those around him—and a deep love for the beauty of aikido! Bridgetown Aikido is the highlight of every week!
My son and I love taking lessons in aikido at Bridgetown. Sensei Eddie is a master with a patient teaching style and a sense of humor. As a teacher myself I know when someone has a talent for education and imparting skills, and Sensei does.
If you’re looking for a beautiful dojo with great teachers and community, look no further! Sensei Eddie is excellent with kids and equally so with adults. Join us!
I have trained for four plus decades, and Bridgetown Aikido is where I look forwards to training whenever I am in Portland. I have known Sensei Eddie for 30 plus years and truly appreciate him.
Sensei Eddie is a wonderful teacher of Aikido. He takes the care and time to instruct and work with my son who has Down syndrome. I would recommend Bridgetown aikido to anyone.
Bridgetown Aikido is amazing! The teachers are highly skilled in their art form and as teachers to us new comers. My son is taking a class and he loves it. It has helped him with focus and strengthening body and mind. I highly recommend this dojo to take classes for all family members.
My 8 year old started aikido here a couple of months ago when he decided he didn’t want to do team sports this fall. He can be a bit on the shy side but very physically active and he loves Bridgetown akido. Sensi Eddie is the perfect balance of fun and silly that my son appreciates and is flexible with the kids yet instills respect and discipline which is what I was looking for especially as a widow.
Bridgetown Aikido is a special place. Not only is Eddie an incredible teacher but he really invites you into this family. As the father of 3 boys, he brings the right balance of structure and compassion to class. He really focuses on developing people and character along with the art of Aikido. If you're looking for a supportive, positive environment, I highly recommend Bridgetown Aikido.
If you are looking for a fun, safe, friendly place for your child to have a fantastic experience then this is it! Eddie and his team strive to teach kindness, develop friendships and apply everyday life experiences to this schools teaching style. Great exercise of the body, mind and soul and really great for beginners. My Son is almost 9 years old and this is his favorite after school activity ever!!!!
I can not even express all of my thoughts about this dojo. I regretted that I have not join earlier. This is become my second home now. Everyone is nice, friendly and we are training with care.
I started attending classes at a local park over quarantine and the community is like no other. Since we have returned to the dojo, the great community has stayed and I have felt welcomed. Aikido is great for not only exercise, but through aikido I’ve learned how to work better with others. Fantastic experience, I highly recommend attending.
Here is why you will love this place.
-I felt welcome the moment I got through the door. I never felt like an inexperienced newcomer, but a peer.
-There may be one instructor, but everyone helps everyone.
-No macho dude BS
I recommend this place to family, friends, and now you. See ya there.
I've been going to Bridgetown for a 5 months now. Being an overweight middle aged woman I was apprehensive to try. I'm so glad I did. Everyone has been being accepting of my lack of skill level. Sensei takes the time in every lesson to explain the history and why moves are they way the are. he's also great about making sure moves are done correctly so no one gets hurt. I've adored my time at Bridgetown.
Years ago we stood outside the dojo’s roll up doors to watch our 4 year old son take his first belt test. He performed all the movements and was so pleased to have been a part of the first round of testing. What we were really shocked at, was that as part of the testing the other children sit reverently and watch silently supporting their classmates while each takes their test--for 45 minutes! At this point, my partner and I were convinced that being a part of Bridgetown Aikido, and having our son continue along this path was more important than all the soccer and outdoor camps we put him in. When our daughter was old enough, she also began training at Bridgetown Aikido. She had some problems with a bully who kept pushing her over at preschool. She said “Don’t push me! I don’t like it when you push me. STOP.” Yet the bully persisted. She kept following her around the playground pushing my daughter over. What did my daughter do next? When the bully went to push her again, she immediately did a sit-fall and got out of the way. The bully was confused and left my daughter alone. Bridgetown has been, and continues to be, a wonderful place for our children to grow and learn self mastery. We truly appreciate the delicate balance of tradition, humor, and respect taught at Bridgetown Aikido.
My family have been members of Bridgetown Aikido for several years now. Both children and adult classes. We enjoy both the quality instruction and the sense of community. There are great teachers with different teaching styles to help learning from different approaches. Classes are made up of all different level students, who are eager to learn aikido with you. We learn practical self defense and body awareness techniques in a safe setting without the common martial arts elements of fighting and aggression. Come practice with us at the dojo to help yourself be more confident, healthy, and centered.
Wonderful dojo in NE Portland. This is a welcoming environment with excellent instructors. Very safe place for beginners, a well run, nice martial arts community.
I started training with Eddie in 2003. I wanted to teach my daughter how to defend herself. I’ve trained with Eddie ever since. I started training at Bridgetown when it opened in 2010 and got my blackbelt there. I’ve learned a great deal from both Eddie and his father. My experience with Bridgetown is that it is a great place to train for kids, beginner adults and experienced adults. The atmosphere there is friendly and safe. The quality of instruction is excellent. I recommend the dojo frequently.
Our family has taken part in both the kids and adults classes. We love the classes and community around the dojo. There is a strong aikido lineage with great teachers.
Sensei Eddie is fantastic and such a great presence in my kids lives! We love him as much as the kids do and they are having fun while they are get ting exercise and gaining confidence! -Rebecca Hood
Sensei Eddie Frager is great with kids of all different ages. Finds just the right combination of fun and silliness with discipline and a level of expectation commensurate with a child's ability. I sometimes sit in on classes and it is as frankly enjoyable for me to watch as it is for my kid to do! Eddie seems very skilled with kids and adults. He also helped my son adapt to aikido very well, especially during a time that my son's interest was flagging; Eddie made it engaging and fun for him again with some attuned attention. I hope for my son to be involved with Bridgetown aikido for quite a while.
I was looking for Martial arts for my self and my kids. My son and I visited several Dojos in our area and after watching and participating in one class, we knew it was the right fit for us. No one is better than Sensei Eddie Frager. With 3 kids of his own, he knows how to teach in a way that kids respond to. Never over bearing or forceful. It's a great place for kids to blend and learn to work with each other in a non-intimidating, non-competitive atmosphere. Adults are able to participate with their kids and in more advanced classes. If your looking for self defense, self motivation, and physical fitness look no further.
Bridgetown is the place to learn Aikido in Portland. The instructors have created a culture centered on learning this martial art safely while having fun. My son Steve and I joined last summer. Since then I have seen such confidence in my son that I would whole heartedly recommend Bridgetown to any parent looking to make a big positive impact on their child.
I would highly recommend Bridgetown Aikido. Both of my children have been students of Sensei Eddie Frager. Their experience has been a significant contributor to their development. Aikido is a great workout, but what I found most beneficial is how Sensei Eddie created an atmosphere of what I would call "caring discipline." Their was always warmth and caring in the dojo but there could be no disrespect or lack of focus for too long. This was essential to helping both kids learn to focus. That focus led to improvement and that improvement built their confidence.
