I’m currently living in Nashville and needed a place to train for the holidays so I decided to give true art a try. I dropped in and everyone was very welcoming. Professor Shannon is the man, I would 100% recommend trying True art BJJ out if you’re in the Akron or Cleveland area.
If you’re debating either taking your child here or enrolling yourself, stop debating and just do it. There is no better martial art to learn and no better place in the area to learn it from. Shannon shows tough love to all the kids. He gets the absolute best out of them and pushes them past what they might see for themselves, while showing empathy and encouraging them every step of the way. He gives extra one on one help where needed if he sees someone having trouble, and controls his class with excellence. There is not a wasted moment in the entire lesson. Without a doubt this is the hardest thing you or your kids will ever do, but it is so worth it if you don’t quit and encourage your kids to stick with it. It’s a pleasure to watch my son be taught technique, discipline, humility and endurance and to be on my own journey in the adult class. I hope to be training here for years to come. TrueArt Jiu Jitsu is the place to train if you want a great instructor that has grit and cares about his students. TrueArt has pumped out some pretty great competitors which is a testament to their training. Highly recommend!
I joined True Art on Jan 1 of 2024, writing this exactly 7 months later I can 100 percent write with confidence to tell you that this instructor and culture that is throughout the gym will change your life for the better. Class number 1, I was the heaviest I have been I think ever and clinically depressed sitting at 275 lbs. During class number 1 warm ups I could barely make it through the warm ups without getting completely winded. I have steadily been going twice a week (Monday and Wednesday fundamental training) and can not say enough praise that this sport and coach has provided for my personal confidence and overall health. I am now 40 lbs lighter weighing 235, my cardio is the strongest it’s ever been (I am 39 years old). I thought my age and being out of shape was going to slow me down…. This sport and encouragement from higher ranking teammates will forever change your mind on not joining because of age and or physical ability, they will look past both insecurities and want you to succeed if a safe manner. You will get a couple bumps and soreness but trust me those go away and over time you will look past those small items that may have been a huge alarm at the begging. Keep at it. Background, I do have over 12 years of Kickboxing experience but have always wanted to find the time to practice BJJ…. But have always put it off. I wish I practiced this Sport as a kid. If you are considering this sport or if you are an active member of the sport and want to try this gym out….do it. You will fit right in with ease. Shannon has a great relationship with his students. He demonstrates Superb knowledge in his expertise when he’s teaching class. Always offers a ride when I wanted to come train. First off, this academy is a wonderful place to train at. I was a drop in from another academy, and Shannon (Black Belt) was more than welcoming. I got to roll with all his top belts, and they are extremely talented! I wish I had spent more time with them, but due to family obligations I spent one day with them. Shannon's expertise, knowledge, and general welcoming culture makes True Art a must destination for anyone that trains BJJ! The level of BJJ at the academy is extremely high. With that being said, as a visitor from another academy I found it very welcoming. I got great rounds in with some really top level members. I got a handful of rolls with Shannon, and his game is impeccable. For anyone that is coming to Akron area, please visit this place or become a member. The culture and standards make this academy one of the best I have visited! Highly recommend, can't wait to come back.
I trained at Tru Art Jiu Jitsu for two weeks while in town for a business trip and can tell you that the owner and head coach Shannon is a very knowledgeable instructor with an ability to pick out your weaknesses and give you valuable feedback. If you are looking for a gym that will actually train you well and care about your skill progression as a student, True Art is the place for you. The community here is very conducive to learning, I really enjoyed my time training with everyone here, you will be challenged, and you will learn so much.

I was coming to spend a month visiting the area and I did not want to lose a month of training. I did a google search and found True Art. I was a bit hesitant to go to a school away from my "home school" but I am truly glad I found them. Professor Shannon has built an amazing community. Everyone was super welcoming, I never felt out of place. The training was excellent. A lot of really great practitioners. I will definitely be coming back when I am in town and will recommend them to anyone looking to train in Northeast Ohio.
Shannon is terrific! Excellent teacher, attentive, and fosters a great atmosphere. My daughter and I are both glad to have him as coach. I’d give him 6 stars if I could.

I dropped into True art bjj today and had an awesome experience. Shannon is legit. He is a very passionate and knowledgeable and has created an awesome atmosphere. Tough group of guys , 100 percent plan on training there again!
My son started beginning of this year. He has learned so much. He is so good with the kids and gives fair attention to each and every kid. He doesn’t play his favorites and treats everyone equally. Of course someone is struggling then he will make an extra effort to get them comfortable. If you are looking for easy way to earn your belts then not a place for you. Shannon will make sure that you have mastered each and every technique to advance. His attention to details is amazing. I would recommend him to anyone in any level of their training. I m excited start my training tomorrow.

I don't train at True Art but I have had the opportunity to cross train a bit there. Their gi program is, in my opinion, one of the best in the area. Shannon is a fantastic and passionate instructor and I expect to see them as a competitive powerhouse on the regional scene in the near future.
I've done Jiu-Jitsu for years now. I was a blue belt when I first started at this school, and after training with the people at this school I realized I had been wasting my time for years. It's important when you first start something, to be sure you have a competent teacher. The problem is most beginners don't know the difference when they first start. Let me save you years of being at the wrong place and with the wrong teachers. This place is one of the top schools in the country! My game has improved dramatically in just a short time. I love this place! You will too.

This new and super clean gym houses some of the best talent NE Ohio has to offer when it comes to jiu-jitsu. Coach and owner Shannon White is friendly and inviting and has curated a comfortable and safe training environment for all that join his gym. There are people from all types of backgrounds here, and they are all welcome. The only thing he asks of you is that you never give up.
Our 7yr old son is thriving at True Art. Mr. Shannon is fantastic with the kids! They feed off of Shannon's love for the sport, and they want to come back and learn more. Jiu Jitsu has helped channel our high energy/emotional son and taught him control. He is growing and learning so much at every practice!

Excellent academy! Professor Shannon White is extremely knowledgeable and his love for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is evident in his teaching. The atmosphere is highly competitive but equally welcoming to practitioners of all levels. I couldn’t recommend it more.
This summer I moved to Ohio from NYC and needed a place to train. Shannon welcomed me with open arms. I've been training jiu jitsu for over 13 years and in that time have had the good fortune to train with some of the best gyms and exceptional coaches. I would put Shannon in that category. His passion for the sport is clearly evident and he heavily invested in the success of his students, even those just visiting, which is rare.

I love training at True Art! I found professor Shannon while searching for women’s self defense classes online. As a female with zero previous experience in martial arts (and pretty much zero natural athletic talent 😂) the learning curve has been steep but Shannon is a great instructor who always makes himself available to answer questions and help break things down into simple understandable parts. So if you love to work hard, want REAL experience defending yourself through the sport of Jiu-jitsu, or you just LOVE to fight, this is the place for you!
10/10 highly recommend. Shannon was very thorough with his instructions and knowledge. He is very serious about wanting to see his athletes succeed.
