Shawn is an amazing instructor! I came in with my 3 young kids having zero Ju Jitsu experience, and it was the best first experience. My kids felt confident with how he taught. He was very patient while being very professional and good at communicating the goal of the moves he was teaching. I look forward to continuing business with Shawn at Tribal Ju Jitsu.

Shawn taught a fantastic self-defense class for our Homeschool Co-Op this year. We had about 30 kids from 4 years old up to 15 and he managed to keep them all engaged and excited while also teaching them self-defense maneuvers, strategy to deal with bullying, and some of the basic discipline that is central to Jiu-Jitsu. It was amazing and I cannot recommend him highly enough!

I decided to start BJJ after I made a decision that I needed to be learn how to protect myself and my children. I am glad to say that my intention got me through the front door, but the atmosphere and crew at Tribal Society has kept me coming back week after week. I would recommend to anyone and everyone! I get to leave each and every class with a new self defense skill for my tool belt, and also a better mental game as well. I love learning the mental game to BJJ too! The top notch coaching from Shawn is such a blessing and so special to have in our valley. All my classmates have been so kind, patient and helpful- no need to worry about being “the new kid” here. Thank you, Shawn and Cic for creating a SAFE , FUN and BADASS place where this post partum momma can learn and grow and have a damn good time while I’m at it. Thank you. 🙏

My son comes twice a week. Tuesdays & Thursdays. We absolutely love this place. Shawn is an amazing teacher. He is so kind to the kids and loves to joke and play with them. I’ve been recommending it to all of my friends. If you’re looking for a great way for your children to learn respect, patience and controlling their emotions this is it! Adults as well

The instructors is really know how to teach the skills of jiu-jitsu in a non-competitive environment
A great little hidden gem of a jiu-jitsu gym! I reached out to professor Shawn while I was visiting town, and asked if I could drop in to class, and got the thumbs up to roll through. I received a warm greeting at the door, was instructed where to change and put my things, and got in some great roles with some of the students there. I had a great time and will definitely drop back by next time I'm in town! I would definitely recommend this place to both new students, as well as experienced grapplers. Very clean gym, great energy, and a convenient location!
Absolutely fantastic school! My kids have not only learned valuable self-defense skills, but they’ve also developed discipline, character, and confidence through the classes. The instructor is patient, skilled, and truly cares about each student’s progress. As an adult student, I’ve also benefited immensely—my own Jiujitsu skills have sharpened, and I’ve felt challenged and supported every step of the way. This school is a great environment for all ages, whether you’re just starting out or looking to take your skills to the next level!

I've been a competitive athlete all my life in multiple sports, and training at Tribal Society was probably the best athletic experience of my life. Shawn has a very rare skill to be able to simultaneously train people at a very high level and raw beginners at the same time. Shawn focuses on teaching the underlying principles of the sport, not just random move after random move. He wants you to be able to figure out for yourself in a tricky situation what to do because you understand the basics underlying the sport. And Safety! Safety is the key word of this gym. They don't just say it, they live it. Keeping you training partners safe is the focus of every session. This isn't just about one guy, every member of the gym is respectful and focused being the best they can be but also making sure every one can stay injury free and return for next week's session. Also, the location is so amazing, it's hard to describe. It is in the wilderness and probably has the best views of any gym in the world. Don't miss this gem of a training center.
What an incredibly welcoming and positive group of people to train with. Coach Shawn is always clear in his instruction and super encouraging. I always leave feeling energized and grounded. And it's an amazing way to cultivate presence as it's hard to be in an existential eddy when you're in a choke hold! Can't say enough good things!
So glad we have a place like this to train Jiu Jitsu in the valley. Great group of people. Positive and welcoming. Always a fun time training. The first half of each session we practice and learn and the second half we spar a few rounds. Shawn the instructor knows his stuff and focuses on concepts and fundamentals that translate into effective skills in live sparring.

Really positive experience by me and my wife. Coach Shawn is terrific, patient at explaining, excellent at demonstrating. It's obvious he really cares about what he does and his students. The entire group is friendly and welcoming, we immediately felt like we belonged. If you're thinking of giving BJJ a try, this is a fantastic place to do it. I've been training at Tribal society since early November 2022. I'll try my best to not compare to other gyms I've been to, I'll just say that this one is BY FAR my favorite. It's welcoming, informative, and my son and I look forward to going every week. Shawn is patient and leads the class with a light sense of humor, brushing away any intimidation someone might feel. I feel comfortable inviting my female friends to classes knowing full well that they will be treated with kindness and respect.
I am only a month or so in but love the culture at Tribal Society BJJ. Shawn structures his classes well. He does a great job of dialing in fundamentals and illustrating the techniques so that everyone from the seasoned vet to the first day student can grasp them. He never hesitates to show someone a particular move or technique a second or third or 20th time if they don't understand. Great instructor who has great patience, with an amazing atmosphere to train!
Tribal Society BJJ has been amazing for both of my sons. The discipline and the skills that they learn are of great use in every aspect of their lives. Shawn makes the classes interesting and gives real life lessons. The classes are well run and the kids are receptive to the way Shawn instructs. I highly recommend every child, both male and female, take BJJ from Tribal Society.
Shawn was always very welcoming to myself and new comers while teaching high level ju jitsu. We always get great individual attention at classes, he even offers private lessons at his house if you want to focus specifically on your game. The setting at Tribal Society is beautiful, on the Crystal River and right below Sopris. I look forward to getting on the mat with Shawn every week.
Shawn is a great teacher and Tribal Society is a great place to learn whether you’re a beginner or have been training for years. Shawn has created a collaborative effort at the school where everyone is excited to learn and improve together. Great focus on class techniques as well as individual instruction. If you’re looking to try BJJ, Tribal Society is the place! Shawn also comes up with a new joke every couple weeks. Can’t recommend Tribal Society enough.
Shawn is amazing, really friendly environment to learn and practice Jiu Jitsu. First martial art ever and don't see myself without it now. Whether your looking for easy going or to train hard and technical both are available. Pay as you go is a big benefit, not like the other gyms that you have to pay up front. Tribal BJJ is an incredible place for anyone to learn proper Technique and fundamentals. Shawn is a great instructor and has been doing Jiu Jitsu for over a decade. My son is getting a much needed physical outlet with exceptional guidance. Highly recommend anyone looking to gain confidence and have some quality, intense rolls on the mat to join!
