I’ve been training at The Tōukon Academy for the past 3 months, building on a year of previous training, and the standard of teaching here is second to none. The sessions are highly technical, precise, and structured in a way that supports information retention. The academy’s tailored curriculum is excellent, with a clear focus on developing strong fundamentals and core principles rather than just memorising techniques - something that has made a noticeable difference in my progress. Dave brings a unique depth to the sessions, particularly through his insight into the historical side of Jiu Jitsu. It reflects a genuine passion for the craft and helps you understand the why behind what you’re doing, not just the movements themselves. Other coaches, including Sunny, Lee, and Harrison, also provide excellent tuition, which speaks volumes about the academy’s standard and the quality of its coaching. The online learning platform also deserves a mention, given it is available with some memberships. This feature is a great addition that complements the in-class teaching very well. On top of that, it’s a hugely welcoming and supportive community with a mix of ages, experience levels, and goals, from competitors to casual practitioners. Everyone is approachable and willing to help, which creates a great training environment. Highly recommend to anyone looking to improve their Jiu Jitsu in an intentional, structured environment, or to begin their journey from scratch.
I joined The Tōukon Academy in 2020 and had been training at other academies for 3-years beforehand. Dave's no-nonsense approach to jiu jitsu and his well structured teaching through a clear/concise curriculum that covers variations of weekly techniques/fundamentals, is both easy to understand but more importantly (I think) is the explanation of concepts in such a way that enables you to retain this information beyond the class. The team are all supportive of one another and there's a real sense of community where "we're all in this together", helping and learning from each other. Dave also hosts world class seminars with the likes of Mauricio Gomes, the G.O.A.T. Roger Gracie and Rayron Gracie. The academy caters to all age groups but as an older guy (50+) who started this at age 46, it's never too late to learn and I highly recommend the beginners four-week course as an introduction to BJJ.

There’s something different about this academy — and it shows. The teaching is structured, progressive, and genuinely top tier. There’s a clear system behind what’s being taught — it’s not random techniques thrown together. Every session builds on something. You understand why you’re drilling it, where it fits, and how it connects. David Webb creates an environment where everyone feels comfortable from day one — whether you’re brand new or experienced. There’s zero ego. At the same time, he has the ability to break techniques down in a way that makes sense to every level. Beginners understand it. Advanced students can still refine the details. That balance is rare. The culture is just as strong as the coaching. David and all the members associated with The Toukon Academy are friendly, welcoming, and supportive. It’s competitive when it needs to be, but never toxic. You leave better than you arrived — every session. I’ve got friends who train further afield who regularly tell me how lucky I am to have David and his academy on my doorstep — and I fully agree. It truly is a different kind of jiu jitsu 🤙🏻
Friendly and supportive environment to study Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The coaches are all highly skilled and knowledgeable. The community spirit is second to none. Perfect for anyone wanting to compete or just take up a new hobby. The course syllabus is carefully curated and crafted to support growth - for an absolute newbie with no experience like myself it has been the best decision I ever made to join the Toukon Academy. I only wish I had made the decision earlier.
I highly recommend the Tōukon BJJ Academy in Bedford for anyone interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Head Coach David Webb is an exceptional instructor with 25+ years of knowledge and experience, and who is genuinely invested in your progress. There is a great culture within the club that extends to the Toukon Academy's located in St Neots and Norwich. There are classes all week that cater for all skill levels, from complete beginners to advanced practitioners and for those wanting to compete.

Having stepped into The Tōukon Academy as a complete beginner in BJJ, I could not have asked for a more welcoming and constructive environment in which to start a new sport. David’s methods of teaching really help to break down often complicated techniques and his sincere attitude to helping students means that I always feel comfortable asking questions. This also applies to Sunny who takes the Thursday evening classes. Whether it be the white belt introductory course, open mats or the weekly Judo class, there’s so much on offer I couldn’t recommend The Tōukon Academy more.
Posted 2 years agoI could not recommend The Tōukon Academy enough. It can be daunting starting a new sport let alone BJJ. But from the moment I step foot inside for my first class I felt welcomed and apart of the fantastic community that they have curated. Dave's coaching is mega, detailed and in-depth while still remaining concise and easy to follow as a beginner. I leave every class felling fantastic having had a great laugh, learned a lot and with a smile on my face. 10/10. I'm so glad I started and look forward to every training session.

Dave joined by Gary and Sonny (and helpful members sharing knowledge) make every session enjoyable. Grateful for the safe environment they create, allowing me to test both my physical and mental fitness. I'm thrilled to be a part of the friendly community!
Posted 2 years agoI have just completed my first 100 days as a member of the Toukon Academy and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone thinking about trying out Jiu-jitsu. Having never done a martial art and not a frequent gym goer I was nervous about joining, however from the very first beginners lesson Dave the head trainer puts you right at ease. His lessons are extremely accessible with great patience and understanding towards every pupil. Dave is brilliant at showing you the fundamentals, practical application and the thought process behind applying your Jiu-jitsu through clear instruction with a good bit of humour! The community at the Academy is wonderful, with people of all ages, backgrounds and levels learning together. Plenty of friendly faces and more knowledgeable members makes the lessons enjoyable and worthwhile. I would definitely recommend the Academy to anyone thinking of joining!
