I’ve been coming to this studio since I was seven years old. I’ve been doing taek wando for 10 years and just recently started jui jutsu here for the past 2 1/2 years. The biggest reason why I love this place is because of the people. The instructors are great teachers and will help any of the students with anything they need help on…I ask so many questions in BJJ its now like a routine for the instructors to wait for me to come up to them with a least one question after class haha! But basically the instructors value constant improvement and believe that everyone has room to improve and the right to get as much help as they need. In addition, the instructors treat you like their second family and want to get to know you as the person you are which I really appreciate. I would recommend sending your child here if they have an interest in the sport and or/ want to develop independence and discipline. From an honest perspective, this sport taught me a lot of discipline. Martial arts takes constant refining, and the values I’ve learned here have helped me in other aspects of my life. If your child is mature enough and/or independent enough to understand and practice refining their skills, they will get the most out of it. Once you get more advanced, you do learn harder skills but will also be required to strengthen previous skills. The only thing I would say: practice extra conditioning when you can. Before covid the studio did more conditioning (push ups, squats those sort of conditioning) for the students and now it’s not as much anymore. However you will still get great workouts from classes.

I started training here long ago with my son in martial arts/TKD. He grew up and transitioned to other sports after 7 years but I stayed at SVMAA, earned my black belt and have been here for 12 years now. Training in martial arts has helped me stay healthy and active, feel more confident, and decrease stress from the demands of work and just life! I have recently transitioned to Jiu-Jitsu here at SVMAA and while it is not easy for me, the instructors are so experienced and awesome that is has allowed me to grow and make huge gains. As an older (female) white belt in Jiu-Jitsu, they customize their instruction to meet my needs: challenge but not overwhelm. My priority is to train safely but also have fun! My training partners are always friendly, helpful and supportive. Blood, sweat, tears, pain, laughs and hugs have all contributed to my personal growth and I wouldn't have it any other way. The friends I have made and the close knit community I have built here is the best part of it all. Master instructor Teri Lee and her SVMAA staff/crew (Jian, Cody, Rob, Khang, and Bri) are truly the heart and soul of this place. It is 100% my home away from home. They are like family to me. I highly recommend that folks who might be interested in martial arts come by and check it out. See ya on the mat!

Great martial arts academy! All instructors are awesome and the whole team is just perfect! It’s been more than two years now since my son started with them, improving a lot on everything including manners and respect.. Would highly recommend to all friends and family for all ages!

If you want a great learning experience taught by world-class martial artists, Sunnyvale Martial Arts Academy is the right place for you. KJN Teri Lee started this school over 30 years ago, and she has assembled an amazing group of instructors and students. Even with some classes being very big, each student gets individualized attention designed to make the most of that student's potential -- mentally, physically and spiritually. The next generation of instructors is just as committed to giving students a great experience. KJN Jian (Teri's son) and his contemporaries bring a wealth of experience in the different disciplines taught here -- from Taekwon Do to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to kempo and muay thai styles -- you will learn the techniques, from basic to advanced, in order to round out your self-defense knowledge.
