We love Freedom Jiu Jitsu Academy! My son has been training at this gym for a year and a half. The facilities are top notch. The trainers are excellent, work well with the kids, and are highly skilled and knowledgeable. Staci Stefan is the heart of this gym. She was the first person we met when we stopped on a whim. Staci, along with the other amazing coaches, are so encouraging and passionate. My son has improved in both his jiu jitsu abilities but also his confidence and strength. Plus he has a lot of fun doing it!

I've been training here as a brand new white belt and I am thoroughly enjoying it and have no complaints. The instructors have made me feel welcome during my first three months, and I appreciate the attention they've given me. I get worked hard, but everyone I've rolled with here has given me constructive feedback. Great family atmosphere. Couldn't recommend more highly.

Been training here for a little over a year. The instructors are awesome, very welcoming and knowledgeable. The facility is great, large and modern. My fellow students are encouraging and understanding while still being killers. Great atmosphere to train and get better at Jiu-jitsu. There are plenty of gyms to train at, but I would recommend anyone that wants to get into Jiu-jitsu or has already trained to sign up for a free trial and check out what these guys have to offer.

This is a world class jiu-jitsu gym. The instructors are incredible and the atmosphere is encouraging. Not only is the staff amazing but the gym members are fantastic too. I’ve been going to this bjj gym for 3+ years and the atmosphere is 100% positive. My only regret is not finding this gym sooner! :)

My son Jase has been coming here for Brazilian jiu jitsu since he was 3! He's 5 now and loves it more and more everyday. He is not just learning how to defend and protect himself with the techniques, but it has also given him confidence, exercise, discipline, improved focus, and ability to socialize with kids his age range. He's recently moved up to big kids to where he is learning submissive moves and is now doing Muay Thai, which is included in membership (so cool!). The teachers including the owners who also are well known in the sport, have professional experiences from UFC and other platforms, are just amazing with the kids and so patient with them. I love how Staci personally knows each and every child and can talk to the parents of her professional advice as to how to help each child in order to continue to grow in the sport and enjoy it at the same time! My husband has also joined and started doing BJJ as well. I highly highly recommend this sport especially this place to everyone looking to have their child join an extracurricular activity. It teaches the child also to teach them to think and use the knowledge they've learned and actually put it into action. I saw it when my 5 yo "went live" with a 7 yo and beat him 4 out of 5!

Four months ago, I was so fed up with making excuses for my own lack of happiness, energy, and time. I walked into the Gym not knowing what to expect. I was greeted with the warmest welcome. From the beginning I was made to feel like a longtime friend. With each new class, I met different coaches and new students. I quickly realized I had made more than the right choice - I knew I was exactly where I needed to be. The instruction is personalized and encouraging. It's rare to find a situation where complete strangers are invested in your progress and are so selfless. The teachers and students are both. In a short amount of time I began seeing the changes in my life. Gracie Jiu Jitsu - Carlsbad is the heartbeat of my new found energy, enthusiasm, and purpose. I love each experience and am grateful for everyone who gives so much here. They've reignited my spark and they will do the same for you. Looking forward to meeting you on the mats.

I have been training now for almost 8 years with Nick and the crew at Gracie Humaita Carlsbad and San Marcos. Top notch instruction from high level black belts, great family environment as I bring both my sons to train as well. You can't go wrong at this gym.

Great gym to train at. Very knowledgeable instructors who are very friendly and welcoming. The gym is very clean and sanitized at all times. Staci, professor Nick, Charlie, and Steve are great mentors. My BJJ game has improved immensely simply because of how dedicated the instructors are to their students. Professor Nick and others have worked with me and helped me out a lot since I started in January.

I trained at Gracie Carlsbad for a week while on vacation... had an awesome experience in the short time I was there for a reasonable price! Everyone was very friendly and welcoming; I immediately felt comfortable coming in to train. Instruction was excellent and very detail oriented. Great egoless rolling with tons of high level practitioners. Clean, welcoming, and a family atmosphere... nothing but positive things to say. Thank you Nick, Staci, and everyone at Gracie Carlsbad! Amazing gym with great coaches and community. Everyday you come in and learn something new. There are a lot of high level belts here which goes to show not only the community but also that the instruction is great. Very glad I joined here as a white belt. I've already learned more than I could have expected in 5 months.

Most importantly, the instruction is excellent. Nick, Stacy, David, Charlie, and Steve are all great martial artists, teachers, and human beings. They are focused on helping their students - no egos, self promotion, etc. The facilities are clean and well maintained. Last, there is a great vibe - a sense of community and respect for all. After looking at several places around town, Gracie Carlsbad is definitely a step above the rest. Great place for kids or adults to train.

So awesome. This was my fifth year joining the Gracie Carlsbad team in the mornings while vacationing in California. Nick and Staci have created a truly welcoming environment. I appreciate the instructors in depth knowledge of sport and self defense jujitsu and am glad to learn and grow with them during my training visits. I highly recommend you give them a try. In addition I had the chance to observe their kids summer program and was very impressed.

If you are interested in exploring Brazilian Jiu Jitsu this is the place. The people here are top notch, both the instruction and team are amazing people that make you feel welcome. In my opinion this is an ideal place to learn, its safe, easy going and provides PREMIUM instruction. In regards to if BJJ is right for you, that can only be decided by testing it out and this school provides a free trial. I'm sure you will be hooked! BJJ is the most exciting and fun way to stay in shape that I have personally found and more importantly it teaches you how to defend yourself. The benefits are endless, I highly recommend coming in

The coaching staff of Gracie Jiu Jitsu Carlsbad were remarkable! After having a chance to work on their mat, I have been provided great instruction that has improved the foundation of my jiu-jitsu. Their approach of educating students sets a higher standard that will be difficult for other teams to match.

Nick is one of the best BJJ instructors I've ever had. I'm so happy my neighbor turned me on to his school! He takes the time to show each student how to make the moves work for them if they're having trouble with them (I have the flexibility of a steel beam - so I need his help often.....) The classes have the perfect balance between technique instruction and training/sparring. There aren't any aggro meatheads in the classes I've been to and everyone is eager to help you learn. It's the perfect environment for anyone willing to learn or improve on what they already know.

I was referred to Gracie Jiu Jitsu Carlsbad by a coworker and I was not disappointed. I take the Gracie Fundamentals class since I had never done a day of BJJ in my life and the instruction received by David and Nick are top notch. On top of that, everyone there is super friendly and helps to make a newbie feel welcomed. I would highly recommend going here if you're thinking about learning to defend yourself.

Far superior martial arts experience training here at Gracie Carlsbad. The instructors are patient, encouraging, motivating, and most of all extremely knowledgeable. If you have ever considered learning Jiu Jitsu for self protection for yourself your kid or family member hands down this is the place to be. Nick and Stacey have brought a family feel to their amazing studio. The environment is friendly warm and very clean. I think all women should know how to protect themselves..and this is the best place to get that education. I am very grateful for Nick and his amazing instructors!!! I cannot imagine starting my Jiu Jitsu journey at a finer academy than Gracie Jiu Jitsu Carlsbad. Professor Nick Stefan, the instructors under him and the advanced belts at the academy are some of the best teachers of both technique and mindset that you could hope to find. After a year's worth of observation, it must be pointed out that the quality of teaching that I'm referring to apples to every student type of every level. The kids/youth Gracie Jiu Jitsu and self defense classes are world class with instructors that are truly gifted in working with the youth. And, the general courses provide great experiences for adults to learn valuable skills, train with people of all belt levels, train with people from all walks of life and better yourself physically and mentally.. I don't know how Professor Stefan and his wife, Staci have put together such an open, welcoming, safe place to train with such a great group of people studying. I'm just grateful that they have. I've checked out all of the options in North San Diego County and you will not find a better Jiu Jitsu facility to entrust your children to or to train yourself. I highly recommend Gracie Jiu Jitsu Carlsbad (and its sister facility, Gracie Jiu Jitsu San Marcos) to everyone within driving distance.

I've been to various Jiu-Jitsu gyms and this one is so far the best I've ever trained at. All of the instructors are highly skilled and do an awesome job of pin pointing every little detail in any technique they teach, making sure as well that it is understandable to all of the students. The gym is a very well kept friendly environment where you can just leave your ego at the door and have a good time rolling and progressing. They also have Muay Thai classes taught by Andy Scott another highly skilled coach with a lot of experience. There are also plenty of seminars that go on that are taught by some pretty big names. I highly recommend anybody in or out of the area to check out this gym.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Carlsbad is by far one of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools in North County. The level of professionalism cannot be rivaled. The extensive wealth of knowledge, world class technique, and decades of experience under one gym makes this a unique and special place. Gracie Carlsbad is accessible to all who are interested from the novice with absolutely no experience to the seasoned Jiu-Jitsu competitor. This gym is unique in how well rounded it is because Gracie Carlsbad is also host to world class Muay Thai, jiu-jitsu classes for kids, and street defense. Gracie Carlsbad is first and foremost a family place because it is family owned and operated. Professor Nick Stefan, owner and head instructor, is a highly decorated world class competitor who has dedicated his life to his art and his students, and it shows through to all who have the pleasure in becoming part of the Gracie Carlsbad family. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Recommended by a friend, I had the opportunity to train at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Carlsbad while in San Diego from NYC for the IBJJF World Championships. This academy has an exceptional atmosphere for training, learning and progressing. From the moment I walked into the gym, the team at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu made me feel right at home. I'm very fortunate to have had such fine competition training before competing at Worlds. Nothing but the best at this academy!

We have been attending Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Carlsbad for approximately 6 months. Our son is enrolled in the Little Ninjas program and it has been a positive experience since Day 1. This is a family owned and operated business, run by husband and wife team, Nick and Staci Stefan. They have children of their own, so rest assured, they have plenty of experience in dealing with the kiddos. They, along with the other instructors (just as wonderful), go out of their way to make the most out of each class, with each class containing the perfect balance of technique and instruction, along with fun. In addition to receiving the best Jiu Jitsu training around, the kids are also gaining self confidence, learning patience, enhancing their listening skills, experiencing the reward of hard work and making great friends. This class is well suited for both boys and girls and all the kids are treated equal regardless of skill level. Solid Jiu-Jitsu, solid work out, solid Muay Thai. Basically everything you need to stay in great shape. Nick is an outstanding instructor of the art of Jiu-Jitsu. He presents a great class and keeps you in shape. The instruction offers Muay Thai and Judo as well. An A-list establishment to say the least.

As student of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling since 2003 I've had the opportunity to work with many great instructors. I've been with Nick Stefan since 2007 for the simple reason that he is the best instructor I've ever had. The one thing that sticks out in my mind is that Nick has the ability to teach the subtle nuances of BJJ technique that make a world of difference when executing a technique. It's these small but powerful details that determine success or failure of a technique when training live (sparing) and MOST IMPORTANTLY IN ANY REAL WORLD SELF-DEFENSE SITUATION. Another HUGE plus is Gracie Carlsbad is a Gracie Humaitá affiliate school which of course was founded by Grandmaster Helio Gracie and son Royler Gracie. So it would be an understatement to say that this school is well respected in the Jiu-Jitsu community. I mean this is where it all started right? Bottom line... if you're looking for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, submission grappling, MMA, Muay Thai kick boxing, kids classes, women's classes, self-defense, or just want to get fit and have fun GRACIE CARLSBAD IS THE PLACE!

Is Stephano really charging former students a $50 annual fee to acknowledge their rank? So, if he promotes you and you start your own school, I guess you have to pay the fee or do you lose your ranking? This is even being looked down upon by the Gracie family. No thanks, too much competition to have an ego-maniac as an instructor.

Horrible customer relations. I called them to inquire about the service they provide and their rates. The person on the phone was rude and condescending. I speak clearly and to the point but this person was incapable of conducing himself in a civil manner. I was asking about membership for a group of teenagers and we hurriedly took our business elsewhere. This business is dead as far as we are concerned!
