I dropped in for a morning No Gi class while in town for a work conference and had a wonderful time. It was a very productive class starting right into positional constraint-led rounds with some live rounds at the end. As a smaller girl (blue belt, ~135lbs) I really appreciated the guys giving me competitive, controlled rounds. Everyone there was great to train with. The gym was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Definitely come check them out! Thank you for having me~

I spent my Christmas in Boston and wanted to train, I had found the gym on Instagram and was interested so I shot a message asking about classes and I was told about the classes going on that day and directed to the weekly schedule, they told me I could come right on down and train with them. It’s a really clean space, everyone there was really cool and kind. Ruben is very intentional with what he teaches. He breaks down and explains everything so that you dont just understand how to do a move but why. They also have gym dogs that are just the sweetest so if you’re going to join or visit make sure you bring them treats!!! 10/10 would recommend this gym

TL;DR: This place is amazing—5 stars! Highly recommend, and I can’t wait to return. This is a clean, friendly, and safe place to train, with exceptional coaching and skilled practitioners. The people here are legit. You’ll get great rolls without encountering crazy egos or anyone trying to hurt you. The long review: I’ve had the opportunity to take two morning no-gi classes with Jason, about a year apart, and as a coach and instructor myself, I’m absolutely blown away by what’s happening here. These guys are taking the fundamental principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and applying them to coaching in an innovative way. Just as a BJJ player uses technique and knowledge to achieve maximum effectiveness with minimal effort, Jason applies that same mindset to his teaching. His goal appears to be maximizing his students’ understanding of BJJ through creative and thoughtful teaching methods—one of which is game-based learning. In the most recent class I attended, Jason had us play a series of games where each partner had opposing objectives centered on sweeping and defending. What stood out was his approach: he didn’t spoon-feed us the answers or techniques. Instead, he gave us the objectives and encouraged us to discover the solutions ourselves. I’m honestly blown away by his teaching style—it’s like calculus for jiu-jitsu. The coaching staff is focused on transferring knowledge as efficiently as possible while minimizing time and the risk of injury. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced practitioner—and especially if you’re in a coaching or teaching role—attending one of Jason’s classes will be eye-opening. On top of that, Jason is super approachable and even spent an hour chatting with me after class about his methods. This place is incredible. If you’re considering training here, do it—you won’t regret it. Thank you SBJJ for letting me train and for all the great rolls. I hope to see you guys next year!!!

I came to South Boston BJJ for my first lesson ever and was so glad that I did. Everyone in the class (instructors and fellow classmates) was incredibly kind, knowledgeable and understanding, which was important for a complete novice like myself. I learned a great deal in a short amount of time and got a far better workout than I was imagining. The facilities were also top notch - clean and welcoming. All in all, I look forward to my next lesson at South Boston BJJ.

A great BJJ club where you immediately feel welcome. There is an informal atmosphere during a training session that is nevertheless challenging and where participants show consideration for one another. The club is clean and tidy. What more could you want!

I was in Boston on business and wanted to keep my training consistent. Dropped into South Boston BJJ and they did not disappoint. Super clean gym. Anthony and Jason were fantastic instructors, breaking things down and making them super simple to execute. Training partners were awesome as well, making sure I put in the work (without anyone getting hurt). I will definitely be coming back to the school on my next visit to Boston !

I recently had the pleasure of training at South Boston Jiu Jitsu, and I can't say enough good things about this gym. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the cleanliness of the facility. The mats are spotless, and the changing room was well-maintained, which makes for a comfortable and hygienic training environment. What truly sets South Boston Jiu Jitsu apart, however, is the friendliness of the patrons. Everyone, from the seasoned black belts to the beginners, greeted me with a warm smile and made me feel right at home. The camaraderie among the members is palpable, and it creates a supportive atmosphere that is perfect for learning and growth. The instructors are not only knowledgeable but also incredibly approachable and willing to help. They take the time to ensure that everyone, regardless of their skill level, understands the techniques and feels included in the class. Overall, South Boston Jiu Jitsu offers an exceptional training experience. The combination of a clean facility and friendly, welcoming members makes it a top-notch choice for anyone looking to train in jiu jitsu in the Boston area . I highly recommend it!

During a recent work trip to Boston, I had the opportunity to discover South Boston Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for training. After reading their mission statement on their website, I reached out to them. The owner, Coach Ruben, kindly welcomed me via Instagram messaging to come and train. The atmosphere at the school was welcoming and good for learning jiu jitsu in a positive environment, which I found to be both safe and fun. It is also very clean. As a beginner in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and accustomed to training mostly with women at my school in Miami, I initially felt a little insecure when no women came to the early morning class. Two of Coach Ruben's students came out to welcome me and lead me to the correct entrance door. Their kindness helped alleviate my fears, and I found their support to be both helpful and comforting. Coach Matt graciously partnered with me during the session, focusing on the open guard camping/pass lesson taught by Coach Ruben. His patience, expertise, and kindness in guiding me through the technique were greatly appreciated!!! I’ll be back in one month for work again in Boston and will definitely come back! Thank you Coach Ruben for being so nice to me and to your students who share your philosophy. The doggies are also a BIG PLUS❣️ Kind regards, Murrell

I had the pleasure of training at South Boston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a visitor. They were very hospitable and made me feel very welcome. I felt very safe training at this academy and had great training partners. The environment is incredibly inviting and supportive. The instructors are not only highly skilled but also incredibly patient and attentive, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their skill level, feels comfortable and encouraged. They go out of their way to make sure newcomers feel at ease, which made my experience even more enjoyable. The academy itself is clean, well-maintained, and equipped with top-notch facilities. It’s clear that the team takes great pride in providing a welcoming and positive atmosphere for all their members and visitors. I highly recommend South Boston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to anyone looking to train in Boston.

Excellent instruction, real knowledge/skills gained, classes 365 days a year, morning and night options, no fluff, just jiu jitsu. Also great people, very welcoming, funny and just a cool group to hang around with. If you are in Boston and looking to train for whatever reason, this is your place!

South Boston BJJ reignited my love for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At my old school, I was in a slump and stuck with a professor who simply said “do as I say” and was winging it when it came to lessons. Professor Ruben is constantly designing lesson plans and developing new game plans to help his students grow on the mats. Furthermore, he encourages all of his instructors and students to study on their own and develop questions and techniques to work on. He also keeps the gym open 365 days a year. I’ve been to so many academies where they can’t wait to close their doors and take a day off. When my old gym would close, Ruben would encourage me to visit his gym to train with his team. It’s so obvious he cares about his gym, his students, and anyone who truly loves this sport. Speaking of the students, they’re all fantastic. They are so welcoming and friendly. I’ve been at this gym almost a year now and have never dreaded rolling with anyone there, unlike at some other gyms. The rounds are tough, but I can feel myself developing as a Jiu-jitsu practitioner. Couldn’t do it without Ruben and the South Boston BJJ team.

I was visiting Boston for a conference and was lucky enough to train at South Boston BJJ. The head instructor Ruben ran both nogi classes I attended and the instruction was top notch with a lot of great details. I enjoyed the flow of the classes which transitioned from drilling, to positional sparring, to live rounds. All the rolls were fun with lots of solid rounds and a variety of styles. The team was friendly and it was fun to talk with some of the guys after sparring. The environment felt genuine and something that you wanted to be a part of which can be hard to find. I would highly recommend SBJJ for anyone visiting for a drop in or looking for a place to start their jiu jitsu training.

I came into South Boston BJJ with only a little amount of training experience at other places in the area and I have to say the gym is super well run and never misses a beat. South Boston BJJ is a super comfortable training environment where you can train with and learn from high level grapplers and MMA coaches in the area. Since moving to Boston over the spring semester I was eager to find the right gym for myself and to take my game to the next level. I’m so glad I was able to find South Boston Bjj within days of coming to Boston. Not only has it been a great overall experience but my skills have excelled rapidly. Ruben is not only a fantastic mentor but he also welcomes anyone who comes in with open arms. South Boston BJJ is an amazing environment with people only trying to get better and have a good time, I don’t see myself training anywhere else for a very long time! First and foremost, one of the cleanest and easily one of the most well maintained gyms in Boston. That alone is reason enough to stop by and check it out, but the community is the reason to stay. Never met a more welcoming group of people coming from all walks of life and experience levels.

I've been a student at South Boston Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for four months, starting as a complete novice to BJJ, and it has been a great experience. The other reviews cover the high quality of instruction and the clean and safe environment well, so I’ll focus on what is relevant to anyone thinking of starting as a novice. The focus is on learning by doing. An instructor (Abdul) worked with me one-on-one during my first few classes, but even on my first day I rolled with other students like everyone else. While this could have been overwhelming, the supportive atmosphere helped me learn at a comfortable pace. The more experienced members are friendly and often provide useful feedback, creating a supportive learning environment. I had concerns about getting injured while learning BJJ, but the strong culture of safety and control has made me feel safe while training. I would recommend South Boston BJJ to anyone considering trying BJJ. Whether the focus on experiential learning will work for you is up to your preference - I personally appreciated that I was incentivized to learn fundamentals quickly in order to be effective while sparring. They offer trial classes, so it’s easy to try it out before deciding with no pressure to commit to a membership.

If you are looking to train BJJ in the Boston area, South Boston BJJ is the number one place to go. I have been training at SBJJ for almost five months and I can confidently say that this is the best gym I have ever been to. Owner Ruben Coronado has an incredible wealth of BJJ knowledge and a deep passion for BJJ that inspires me to train as much as possible. He constantly teaches new and effective techniques. He is very well connected within the BJJ world which contributes to this. Overall, the gym has a great environment; all egos are left at the door. South Boston BJJ has been a great place to start my BJJ journey. I’ve been training BJJ for almost a year now, and the gym has offered an extremely welcoming and friendly environment. It’s daunting first starting out as a white belt, but both the coaches and students at the gym are always willing to guide you through things, answer any questions you might have, and also challenge you to be the best you can be. The head instructor Ruben is extremely knowledgable, and is great at explaining the finer details of things. The other instructors - Matt, Jack, Jason, Abdul - are awesome as well. I have nothing but good things to say about the teaching at this gym. It’s super clean too. I plan to continue training here for the foreseeable future.

As a health care professional, I have had to jump around to numerous jiu jitsu schools for training/work over the last 15 years. One of the most important questions I ask myself when going to a jiu jitsu gym is “am I training in a safe environment?” Although jiu jitsu is a physical sport, a safe gym culture is something cultivated by the head coach and passed down to their students. Not only did Ruben Coronado make me feel at ease and safe at his gym, everyone welcomed me like we had known each other since the 2nd grade. I spent 8 months at this gym before moving back to Tampa and learned bleeding edge techniques that helped improve my game dramatically as Ruben is an encyclopedia of jiu jitsu information. I call this place my second home. If you live even an hour away from this gym, you are doing yourself a disservice not stopping by to see what I am talking about.

My experience at South Boston has been the best coaching and gym experience I have ever had since I have started Jiu Jitsu. Ruben is very knowledgeable with a ton of competition and training experience. His love and passion for the martial art is something I really look up to and has influenced me in my jiu jitsu journey. He truly cares about his students and focuses on how we can all improve as a whole on a day to day basis. Since I have started training here my skills and knowledge have increased faster than they ever have. Everyone involved is very friendly, helpful and welcoming, which is something that really stood out to me during my first days of training here. Ruben is one of the most knowledgeable BJJ practitioners in New England. The instruction at SB BJJ is technical and high level. There is a good mix of competitors and hobbyists offering a well-balanced mix of intensity during rolls. For those focused on competition, they are also incorporating competition-focused classes into their schedule. Mat space can get a bit tight at time, but I believe there are currently plans for expansion. The academy is also well-maintained and very clean. Overall, South Boston BJJ offers a well-rounded and great training experience and I highly recommend anyone in the Boston area to check it out.

As a woman stepping into the heavily male-dominated world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I was initially apprehensive. My worries were quickly put to rest the moment I stepped into South Boston BJJ. The supportive environment that Ruben and his team have created is truly exceptional, and the strong sense of community is palpable from the moment you walk through the door. The level of respect and consideration given to every student, regardless of gender, is something I deeply appreciate about this academy. I have never felt out of place or disadvantaged; instead, I am consistently encouraged to train, improve, and push my limits in a safe and supportive environment. The culture of mutual respect and understanding that permeates this gym has made it possible for me to flourish in ways I didn't think possible.

The best place to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Rueben, Matt and Jack are second to none. The carefully explain the techniques and the all the little details that are required to make it work. They demonstrate and watch the class and are there to help whenever needed. South Boston BJJ has a competitive and friendly atmosphere. All of the students are extremely nice, respectful and willing to help whenever you ask. I was recommend to look at Ruben's BJJ gym since I was new to Boston and wanted to get acclimated with the city. South Boston BJJ has amazing instructors such as Ruben, Jack, Matt and others who take their time to explain the methodology behind every technique. Attending this facility has helped me in finding not just friends, but a community of folks who are on a mission to learn more about martial arts. It has been a safe haven where we are all encouraged to show up and do our best. At the end of most weeks, Ruben would take time to ask his students positions or techniques we have trouble with and he will address them until we are comfortable with the solution. He shares a new generation approach to Jiu-Jitsu, which is ground breaking and makes everyone who attends feel like family. If you are eager to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or interested in learning more about martial arts, please do try a class and you will not have any regrets.

I have trained for pretty much my whole time in Jiu Jitsu at South Boston BJJ. South Boston BJJ is centered around the latest and most effective jiu jitsu, a casual atmosphere, and an emphasis on safety and community on the mats. I really enjoy training here because it combines all of these values and creates an environment that in my opinion is much better than the traditional model of jiu jitsu schools. Ruben the owner and main instructor teaches the majority of classes 7 days a week and teaches in a way that is friendly to all levels. I cannot recommend this school enough for the entire package that you get when you sign up. The best school in Boston.

Harvard, MIT, South Boston BJJ. That’s the level of training at this studio. Nowhere else do you find this kind of attention to detail, technical aptitude, passion for the sport and genuinely good people. I’ve trained at 3 gyms over 8 years in the city and Ruben is by far one of the most welcoming and knowledgeable coaches. Ice white mats, golden retrievers and also great music. A+.

I've trained at most of the major gyms around Boston over the past three and a half years; South Boston BJJ is my favorite. The head coach Ruben Coronado is incredible. He regularly studies the latest developments in modern BJJ, Gi and NoGi. He provides actionable advice to his students on a regular basis when he watches them train and he really takes his time to understand how each of his students likes to train and compete. He's incredibly supportive and truly cares about his students' lives in and out of the gym. The atmosphere at the gym is ideal for technical development and anyone looking to become a better competitor. Everyone is super friendly and laid back, always cracking jokes and being lighthearted, which really makes you feel like the focus is in the Jiu Jitsu. There are Gi and NoGi classes every weekday, morning and evening, as well as in the morning on weekends. The facility is incredibly clean and well maintained and has some lifting and cardio equipment as well. I'm very happy here at South Boston BJJ and would recommend that anyone in the city drop in to check it out and train.

I've been at South Boston BJJ for about a year, and I couldn't be happier. Ruben has done an awesome job at creating a welcoming environment that invites anyone seeking to compete or just casually learn BJJ. The facility is always clean and is open 7 days a week. A great place to start, or continue, one's BJJ career. Ruben is always open to helping everyone learn as a effectively as possible. This is passed down to his students, as everyone at the gym aims to make everyone around them better. The lessons are well planned out, and easily flow together from week to week. Clean Facility. Welcoming and Safe environment. High level instructions. Easily accessible. What more could one ask for?

I recently attended a drop-in class at South Boston BJJ. It was an incredibly enjoyable experience. The instructor, Abdul, was excellent at explaining. I appreciated his approach to breaking down drills into small, easy-to-understand segments. As we practiced, he was observant, moving around the class and offering helpful pointers. After we'd gone through the drills and put everything together, we sparred for about 30 minutes. The team in general was delightful. Everyone was welcoming and eager to roll. I'll definitely be returning for more sessions. If you're visiting the area, I highly recommend dropping in for a class at South Boston BJJ. The welcoming atmosphere and high-quality instruction make it a must-visit destination for any BJJ enthusiast.

I’ve been training for 7 years in Australia, Canada and other US states and started training at SoBo in September 2022. I would have to say that SoBo is by far the best gym that I’ve trained in. Ruben places a lot of emphasis on techniques and gives clear and detailed instructions. Beyond the exceptional training, what truly sets SoBo apart is its culture. Whether you're a competitive athlete or just looking to have fun while staying fit – SoBo is a place where anyone, regardless of their goals or level of expertise, can feel at home.

I couldn’t have been more lucky that this was the first gym I walked into. I’ve been training at South Boston BJJ for over a year now and the reason I look forward to training there every week is because of the environment Ruben has created. Everyone is super welcoming and there is a huge emphasis on technique and safety. If you’re looking for a safe and clean gym with great people, a friendly and fun environment, and a high level of instruction this is the place to be.

This gym is truly different. Even if you’re hurt or having a bad day, we are encouraged to just watch or drill or study BJJ matches or instructional! Ruben is so passionate about jiu jitsu and dedicated to teaching. He just wants to share his knowledge and love for the sport. I’m also small — even smaller than a lot of the other girls. I’ve been able to safely train rolling with some of the largest men without fear of getting hurt. People have noticed a change in my jiujitsu, and it’s all thanks to having such an awesome environment that puts learning and safety first.

One of the best gym's I've ever been too! Ruben and his team are excellent instructors that are highly focused on the finer details and the safety of every student at the academy. I love training in this atmosphere. Everyone is all about learning and improving whatever jiu jitsu skills they have. Higher level students are more than willing to help anyone out. We train hard but very safe. No one aggressively cranks submissions, the goal is always to improve not just win. The culture at this gym is great. We have a perfect balance of training hard and having fun. All the students are very friendly and welcoming. Everyone wants to learn, get better, and have fun. Training here is the best part of my day. I'm grateful to have found this gym!

South Boston BJJ is one of the best academies you could find yourself at in the North East. Coming from 5 years of experience, I have trained at an abundance of gyms in the New England area - None can compare to South Boston… The gym fosters a clean and safe environment that is unprecedented in a sport such as submission grappling. Owner Ruben Coronado is a wealth of knowledge who provides cutting edge technique to his student base. He is well connected in the world of Jiu Jitsu as he regularly obtains his own instruction from industry flag holders such as Gordon Ryan and John Danaher. The depth of instruction he provides is top tier and it continually improves and builds upon the previous class. This is an uncommon trait for most Jiu Jitsu gyms as a lot of gyms get complacent. The mats here are not a ego filled chamber (like some other gyms) as he is always open to problem solving and obtaining results. The classes here are structured second to none and the students are all uber welcoming and generous. If you are in the Boston area and are looking to train, you are simply doing yourself a disservice by not training at this academy.

I've trained at 3 other gyms just in the Boston area prior to this place and there is a clear difference. Ruben will cater to all of his students whether you train bjj for exercise, casual training, or competition you feel welcomed here. The students here are very technical and train for control and technique instead of just trying to win the rounds or force submissions. Lastly it is VERY clean, which unfortunately a lot of gyms lack.

South Boston BJJ is a welcoming, safe and supportive gym with focused, dedicated and knowledgeable instructors and students. The culture and environment that Ruben has created is truly special. The level of instruction and attention to detail goes beyond any other gym I’ve trained at. We all push each other to get better and embrace the philosophy of kaizen — continuously improving as BJJ practitioners and people. And, if the people and culture weren’t enough … the golden retrievers will certainly convince you that South Boston BJJ is the place to be!

I’ve been training here for almost 2 years now and can confidently say this is a top tier gym. The quality of teaching from Ruben and the other staff improves not only the level of skill but also the culture of the group. There is an intense focus on technique over brute force that fosters a friendly and relaxed environment. After class, there are always people on the mat sharing new techniques and having a good time. Great group of people. Couldn’t recommend enough.

The best BJJ gym in Boston. Ruben (lead instructor) is one of the most genuine/caring people that I know and that carries over to how he leads class. He is incredibly dedicated to his trade. 5 stars for this place.

Ruben is a highly knowledgeable, skilled and technical instructor. He has a well thought out and structured curriculum for both beginners and advanced practitioners alike. He utilizes a detailed approach to instruction that helps facilitate accelerated learning. In addition Ruben has taken extra care to create both a welcoming and safe training environment. He places an important emphasis on safety to avoid unnecessary injuries, something that is absent from most bjj schools. The training is safe but also competitive if you want it to be. There are a lot of high level competitors here if you’re looking for tough rounds (Ask for the Choi bear if you’re looking for an easy one). Overall great gym, great vibes and great people would definitely recommend!

Training bjj was always on my bucket list, but I didn't know where to start as a full time graduate student. This gym had morning and night class schedule available so I could work around my class schedule. Instructors and athletes were very welcoming on my first day and made it feel like a learning environment, rather than an aggressive competition. All instructors are highly knowledgeable, and with classes going on 24/7, I truly enjoy learning new skills and techniques every time I go train.

If you are looking for the best both gi and no-gi jiu jitsu classes around, look no further. Ruben is an unbelievably skilled practitioner and teacher who is able to make even the most intricate techniques doable for everyone. I have been to a handful of jiu jitsu gyms in the area and I promise there is not a more skilled teacher than Ruben around. Not only does Ruben know jiu-jitsu better than anyone I have ever met (I have never asked a question he couldn't answer), he also knows other combat sports such as wrestling and judo extremely well, and applies concepts from them to better everyone's game. Even when Ruben has his occasional off night the coaching is still world class, as both Matt and Jack are also extremely skilled practitioners and teachers. On top of all of this, the gym is truly like a community. Everyone is extremely friendly, willing to help with whatever you have questions on/are looking to improve, and always looking to scrap. If you are looking for the best instruction, competition, and community at a jiu jitsu gym in New England, this is where it's at!

I have been going to South Boston BJJ for almost a year now and have been very happy with my decision! It was the first gym in Boston I tried out and there was no reason to keep looking after that. I really appreciated that when signing up, you don't have to buy a whole new gi wardrobe or remove old patches and put new ones on. If you have Gi's of any color, then you are good to roll. Ruben has created a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere at the gym. With a well thoughtout curriculum that builds on itself throughout the week.

Been to a lot of gyms around the city and can confidently say that this gym does not only have the best environment, but also has the best coach. Techniques taught here are high level and vert efficient, and the best part is that everyone is super nice to each other. Great place!!!

Finding the right gym can be an intimidating process, however I’m going to make it easy here. In Boston, the right gym is South Boston BJJ. A flexible class schedule, great team atmosphere, and an instruction staff that wants to see everyone reach their best. I’ve noticed significant improvements in my own skills since moving here and am proud to be a student at this school.

South Boston BJJ is the best in the area. Professor Ruben is a great instructor and has the ability to cater to people who are new to the sport, while also challenging those who are more experienced. The gym puts an emphasis on learning at every level, as well as safety. I was impressed that the second day I came to the gym, I was welcomed by my first name, which made me feel right at home. From there it was a no brainer where I should train. Updating: still impressed! Even as the gym continues to grow, each person still is able to get the attention they need to grow. The upper belts are also very helpful and are invested in making you better.

Not knowing a lot about BJJ or martial arts, I picked the gym closest to my office and after a year I am beyond happy with the way it worked out. The gym culture and overall attitude is very welcoming and inclusive, the instructors are very knowledgeable and there is a very good blend of skill levels through the gym.

I was recommended here by a friend that worked with the owner. My friend says "you'll love his style of teaching". My friend was 100% right. Unless I have to move out of Massachusetts, I don't think I'll ever be a member of any other gym.

Started going here a couple months ago after moving to the area and have had a seamless transition into this gym. Ruben has created a great learning environment that accommodates for all levels, and that effectively prepares his students for top competition. The gym is relaxed and welcoming, but maintains a focus on training hard. Couldn’t be happier with my experience so far!

I’ve had my fair share of training at multiple gyms prior to South Boston BJJ and I have to say this gym is by far the BEST gym I’ve ever trained at. Ruben has created a gym culture that is fundamentally skilled, hard-working, and extremely welcoming. And if that’s not a good enough sell, they also have 3 golden retrievers that’ll greet you when you walk in.

Been going here since I moved back to Boston at the beginning of last Summer. Ruben teaches the most effective techniques in gi and no gi jiu jitsu. The training environment is excellent for anyone interested in training jiu jitsu. Highly recommend training here if you are in the Boston area.

Ruben is an excellent instructor, along with Matt, Jack, and Rob. Ruben’s a phenomenal black belt who genuinely wants to see all his students succeed by instructing in the teachings he’s learned from the great John Danaher. I’m a white belt but have been to a number of gyms—and this one, I can safely say, has the best atmosphere I’ve experienced for learning through not only lessons but also sparring. This gym is definitely a gem, and it attracts amazing talent. Also, his dogs are a big plus.

Updating this as I’ve been training here for almost a year now. This place is easily my favorite place in Boston. Joining this gym was easily one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Everyone is so friendly, encouraging and always says hi and asks how I’m doing if it’s been a while. Ruben and the other instructors create a fun but competitive environment where everyone is laughing together while also pushing each other to be the best they can be. Can’t wait to keep getting better here and making more memories. This place is awesome. Dropped in for a class while in town and everybody was super welcoming and friendly. Professor Ruben is an extremely good teacher and can break down a move in an extremely technical and understandable way.

Not a great experience as an out-of-towner; suggest looking elsewhere if you are from out of town, especially international. On my way to Boston I found that this place was relatively close to the airport. I paid for an Uber to get me there looking forward to an evening of training away from home and making new friends. Those hopes were dashed when I arrived and was told that their credit card machine wasn’t working and that I should go to a nearby ATM or use venmo (not a Canadian thing). Two different ATM’s didn’t work and when I returned to tell them and offer paypal instead I was told I couldn’t train. So waste of Uber fare and time. Wasn’t expecting to train for free but would have appreciated some leniency given the time investment and Uber fare.

No emphasis on control or safe training. They focus on competition. Students there are way too aggressive during training. I'm a white belt. Rolled with a blue belt tonight and he went zero to one hundred with an armbar. Heard something tear in my elbow. Was told by the head coach and the blue belt it was my fault for not tapping early enough. That's hard to do when he put that much pressure on my elbow before I could react. There's a toxic culture in bjj to blame the person for not tapping instead of emphasizing self-control. The people here treat bjj like a toy instead of a martial art that can kill people. A few weeks ago they laughed at a student and passed around a video of one of them blacking out cause he didn't tap on time. Hold a choke like that on someone for a bit longer and you can cause brain damage and longer than that and you kill someone. But to them it's about winning metals, not self-defense or control over a martial art.
