Awesome gym, filled with better people. While working in New Haven for a couple of weeks, I've had the pleasure of training at Soulcraft. I reached out by email prior to my trip, and was given a quick and welcoming response. As for the training: world class. Over the last 5 years, I've trained at a number of gyms while traveling, Brad's spot is exceptional by any standard. Clean facility, top notch instruction and a warm but competitive community. If you're visiting, or new to the area, I highly recommend Soulcraft.
Posted 10 months agoI visited Soulcraft 4-5 times while in the area visiting family and only have good things to say about this place. Truly, what a gem of a gym. I reached out to them on Facebook and one of the coaches, Jeff, was quick to reply with information about training. I met the owner, Brad, when I visited the next day. He gave me a warm welcome and made me feel right at home. Everyone I trained with—from white belts to black belts—was kind, considerate, skilled, and eager to discuss techniques and share advice. I will 100% be visiting the next time I'm in town. A huge thank you to Brad, Jeff, Peter—and all of the coaches and staff! See you next time.
The gym was clean, friendly, and safe! I am from out of town for the holidays and I stepped into a woman’s class, and open mat right after. They had no gi, and gi options for open mat. They were very welcoming and professional. You won’t regret walking into this gym. :)
great gym trained here for around 2 years mma-muay thai for the most part and some jiu jistu at the end for sure recommend for anyone
My experience at this Gym was very welcoming. I was in Connecticut on a Work trip for two weeks. I called the gym and I asked if I could join for two weeks. The Owners / coaches we’re very professional and actually care about the sport. They allowed me to train for two weeks with them, now due to my situation normally gym will have me pay for one month to train for the 2 weeks when I travel. This Gym had a variety of levels and experiences, the coaches are very knowledgeable , very technical and care about you learning the correct technique. Everyone was friendly and was there for the sport. I would give this gym five out of five and if I lived in Connecticut, I would join them immediately. Thank you Soulcraft MMA.
Outta town drop in and Brad was awesome and his hospitality was outstanding good rolls and made me feel like i was right at home
joining SoulCraft almost 2 years ago was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Between amazing teachers, great community, clean gym, and a vast class schedule, SoulCraft has been my home away from home!
Great vibe and solid instruction. Very welcoming.
Fantastic facility and even greater instruction. Highly recommend
I have been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Soulcraft Martial Arts for three weeks and it has been a wonderful experience. The instructors are respectful, friendly and always willing to explain more in detail. Although the classes combine people with different levels, the dynamics allow the class to flow smoothly. However, my greatest appreciation is for the open atmosphere that has been established within the class, a space free of ego. I have received extensive instruction and advice from the more experienced students, which has greatly enriched my learning experience. Highly recommended for everyone!
Came in from Toronto and stopped into an afternoon class. AMAZING gym with even more amazing people. Extremely welcoming. Great facilities. Tremendous rolls. Highly recommended, and I will be coming here any time I am in town.
I’ve been training here for a few years and I love it. Great instructors and atmosphere. I highly recommend checking this gym out!
I have been training in Soulcraft for about 7 months and it’s been an exceptional experience. The school has classes throughout the whole day with great/knowledgeable coaches. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the mats are always very clean, overall amazing. If you are in the Hamden/New Haven area I highly recommend training here!
Visited from out of town -- everyone was so welcoming and friendly! I liked the structure of the class, too. The professor connects stand-up to groundwork very clearly and sets aside plenty of time for both positional work and regular rolls. Great group of people! :)
Love training here, friendly students and staff, clean, awesome schedule. Look no further!
Was in town for work and dropped in last Thursday night. Coach Brad and everyone there was awesome to roll with. I’d train here if I lived in New Haven.
Watching my son thrive in his classes at SoulCraft Jiu-Jitsu in Hamden has been amazing! The instructors strike the perfect balance of discipline and fun, keeping kids engaged and eager to learn. It's been incredible to see him develop his focus and physical skills in such a supportive environment. I couldn't be happier with his progress and the positive impact it's had on him. SoulCraft Jiu-Jitsu is definitely the place to be for kids looking to learn and grow in martial arts and practice discipline!
The gift and curse of traveling a lot; I get to visit a lot of jiujitsu gyms. But, after being off the mats for a few weeks, and snowed in, in a new city, with a crazy work schedule...I was anxious and came up with every excuse to "wait until I get home" to roll again (6am, snow storm, work schedule, one Gi, unknown reception...). But, in less than 30 minutes, I felt like I was home. After my third session, I didn't want to leave. This was one of the most technically sound gym I've been to. They were very warm and welcoming. Great leader. Great structure. Great students. Great jiujitsu. No ego. In addition, the mats were cleaned after every season I attended, and more... Being a business owner, I can also appreciate great business. I wasn't sold to, or made to do anything or write this review. I wanted to, as a way to "pay back" for what I learned about business, jiujitsu, and life in my short time there. 6 out of 5, Will recommend! I'm already looking up when I can return lol. If you're a martial artist (or aspiring) in Hamden area, please do yourself a favor, train here. It may seem like I'm gushing. See the other reviews. You will too, after you visit.
I met Brad wolfson through BJJ camps and was immediately impressed by his teaching style and attention to detail. From what I understand the experience and culture of Soulcraft is created with the same level of detail. I’m a black belt who owns his own school in NC and every once in while I consider moving back to CT to be a full time student. It’s that good.
This school is excellent. The coaches are professional, the staff are welcoming. Theres a mutual respect inside the school. Its a great plce for young kids, teens and adults
The people here are welcoming from day 1, the classes are intense , the coaches are experts in their craft. I love it here
Soulcraft is an amazing school for BJJ. The instructors are amazing, effective, and really care. The community is very friendly and welcoming, and there are both coed and women's classes.
I had a great experience dropping in at Soulcraft recently! Professor Brad and his students could not have been more welcoming and it was clearly a great place to learn BJJ. The gym is large and spotless, with a ton of mat space. If you're in the New Haven area, I definitely recommend checking them out!
I had a great time training at soulcraft. My fiancée and I came to drop in for a few classes and everyone made us feel super welcome. High quality instruction and great training partners as well. Thanks guys!
This place was exactly what I was looking for! A friendly, encouraging environment with no shortage of opportunities to push yourself, work hard, and learn a lot. The instructors are all kind and passionate about teaching.
The best, look no further!
I trained at Soulcraft for 2 years while I was in college. An amazing place with great people.
The school is beautiful and big The best of Connecticut
Wish I lived closer so u could visit more often. Brad is a fantastic instructor and has foster an amazing school culture. I can't recommend this place enough.
As a new member, I have found all of the instructors and higher belts to be extremely helpful and patient when introducing and breaking down techniques. I highly recommend this school to anyone who is just starting out.
Great coaching and team members! I have dropped in twice from Boston and everyone has been nothing but welcoming and great to roll with.
I love this place. Brad is an amazing instructor and all the students are super friendly. Best place to train BJJ in all of CT.
I absolutely love this place! I've been here almost two years now. The coaches are great with helping people of all skills and abilities reach their goals and become better athletes. The community is what makes this place my favorite. Everyone is welcoming and supportive of one another. Couldn't ask for a better gym.
I had an amazing experience training at Soulcraft. Brad and the rest of the instructors have created an amazing training environment for their students. I only trained there for a year, because I moved back to California, but I would highly recommend them if you are looking for a place to start or continue training BJJ.
I started training here as a BJJ brown belt after meeting and rolling with a few of their guys. I was surprised by the mix of high level jiu jitsu and a relaxed, welcoming, generally friendly atmosphere. Clean facilities and good, tough rolls. Come to open mat!
Really great gym with a uniquely welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Been training here for close to ten years and the instructors have always been super professional and safety conscious. Especially well suited for families that want classes for adults and kids, which you don’t see a lot. Highly recommend for beginners and advanced bjj
Did Muay Thai classes here for a couple months. The gym itself has everything you need; the coaches, staff, and members are extremely supportive and friendly, and everyone challenges each other in a productive way. Improved my technique a lot here and would highly recommend!
With 14 years of professional fitness/personal training/group fitness experience, I give this operation 5 stars. It is an open, family-friendly spot with an awesome array of classes: beginner to more advanced, drilling to sparring. Whether you want to hit with or without gloves, or roll with or without a GI, Soulcraft has you covered. The facility is clean, well heated, and open for MMA. I've been a member of other MMA locations in the past, and I feel Soulcraft has facilitated my advancement very well by offering ease in training options. The member base is fantastic, and everyone was exceedingly friendly when they recognized me as new, and welcomed me right in. You get a community at Soulcraft. I don't have children, but I love how many families are using this place (Soulcraft even offered parents a couple hours of child supervision on Valentine's Day!); I also appreciate the community event emails that go out to the members. If you are serious about MMA, don't worry--the kids clear out and the adults come in and sparring is a thing. Lots of parking, and located next to convenience shops like gas, a supermarket, and drug stores. Soulcraft has been easy for me to squeeze into my busy schedule.
Our Girl Scout troop (high school jrs) had a great time learning some self defense. They got to be a bit silly while also learning some of the serious aspects that come with self defense. The coaches were fun, knowledgeable & thorough with their teaching.
Great environment! Very clean and welcoming!
Had an amazing experience rolling here! The gym was very welcoming and the atmosphere was great! I will return again!
Awesome place to train, a lot of classes are available during the week, which helps me fit in training with my busy schedule.
Great instruction. Clean facility and very friendly to visitors. Highly recommend.
The people here at soul craft are incredibly welcoming. Great training, great rolls, lovely environment. Highly recommend to anyone in the area.
Have had the pleasure of experiencing not only the environment but the students character at Soulcraft and was absolutely welcomed and pleased. Facility is clean and safe which now more than ever is more than ever a major priority when training. Hands down a place that I would train at as well as bring my family and recommend to others.
I started training with Brad way back and trained at Soulcraft Martial Arts from the day it opened until 2018 when I moved out of CT. Best group of people around. In addition to having top notch BJJ instruction, there are other great programs such as Muay Thai and Krav. Definitely miss the place. If you're in the greater New Haven area, there's no better place to train. You will find that everyone is welcoming and you are treated like family. You will improve your grappling skills and make life long friends here.
Place is super professional honestly. Professional and great quality. 5 stars for me
I began my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) journey at Soulcraft in Hamden, CT, and it was a wonderful place to start. I started training after my family experienced a very severe tragedy. Besides losing nearly 50 lbs in my first year of training, I also dealt with stress and depression much better. I would still be training at Soulcraft today if not for a job change that made regular attendance impossible. Even so, I still try to attend some classes at Soulcraft at least a few times a year, either at the original Hamden, CT location or the newer location in Woodbury, CT. At Soulcraft, the instructors are first rate. You will be taught impeccable technique, including subtle details—such as a minute change of an angle of a body part—that can literally mean the difference between someone tapping immediately vs not tapping at all. Today, I have trained BJJ at many locations across the USA and even some international locations. The foundation I built at Soulcraft still serves me well. At Soulcraft, in addition to being taught the scientific techniques & body mechanics of BJJ, you will also be learning the mental strategies that will make you a solid martial artist.
brad and all the coaches are very helpful. they real break it down step to step and build you up. there is some days we grind it out and we get good training.
This is one of the best BJJ gyms in the area. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Brad is an excellent owner and head coach who goes the extra mile to look out for his students on and off the mats. With the pandemic many places people train have become unsafe, but Soulcraft puts its members health as the top priority. Check it out when you get a chance!
I travel 40 mins out of my way to train here. Positive, friendly, supportive environment. Instructors here are very patient, easygoing, and true BJJ enthusiasts. Can't wait to get back to training! - Beau
Best place to train. Best Coaches. Excellent atmosphere! Totally recommended.
Brad Wolfson is a fantastic teacher! Don't miss the opportunity to train with him!!! Tom Corrie, 2018 IBJJF Masters World Champion
Great school with awesome people to train with and learn from. Brad is a terrific instructor as well along all the others that teach.
One of the best BJJ schools in New Haven. Brad is a knowledgable and dedicated owner/instructor and the members here are very good people. Kind and welcoming to say the least. The gym itself is very spacious, clean, and includes not only areas to train BJJ but to weight train as well. You can not go wrong joining Soulcraft. It will change your life!
The instructor is great and detailed, never did I feel like I was asking too much....even shows his personal twist to the move. You can't go wrong with training with him.
Although I tried group lessons at other dojos, based on my busy schedule constraints I determined that the private lessons option worked best for me in terms of packing as much training and detail into every session, with a dedicated coach to provide real-time instruction and feedback. Brad worked with me to develop a BJJ game plan that suited my skills and interest (age 52 years, non-competition focus, instead with emphasis on self-defense, technical skill development, and (most importantly to me) fitness and sustainability). Brad is a very knowledgable and patient teacher who is engaged and cares about his students progress. The environment at Soulcraft is friendly and welcoming to all, from us older adults down to the kids. I highly recommend Soulcraft Martial Arts for your training needs.
Excellent place to train. Welcoming with a hugely diverse group and phenomenal coaching.
Great club and people!
All the staff here are amazing! They work great with the younger kids. My son was 6 when he started. They use many ways of teaching that keep it fun to learn. Great school!
Lugar muy bueno con el coach Brad que enseña todas las técnicas con mucha pedagogía y paciencia. Gracias 🙏🏻
Brad is very friendly and an amazing instructor! Can't go wrong with him 😊
Hey All I met Brad in Belgium 🇧🇪 on a Globe trotter camp in 2015. He said “ if you ever around call in and train . Role on a few years and I meet him on a USA Bjj camp and he extended the invite to lots of people. While on route to another camp a group of us called Brad and said we are on our way to train before a camp . He initially apologised and said guys I have a full house , but stay in the gym and kept apologising that we weren’t able to stay in his house. We trained with him and stayed in the gym . We had a great open mat and used all facilities .This is a brilliant gym and everyone is made welcome with first class instructors . Brad is a gentleman and a true professional. I highly recommend this gym. OSS 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸 Sean London
I started training here about 7 years ago and I've been here ever since. Ages range from under 5 to over 50. There are people who have no martial arts experience and are just looking to try out a new activity, as well as people who regularly compete in local tournaments. The instruction is top notch, and it's a great community. Give it a try!
Brad Wolfsen is a great teacher and fantastic human being. - Marc Chambers, BJJ Brown Belt
I had a wrestling background, but found a home in this gym. By all accounts, Brad is "plugged into" the local community. Whether your goal is competition or fitness, I highly recommend Soulcraft to those considering. It is a place where you will be surrounded by those who eat, sleep and dream about BJJ, without losing the perspective that can also make the gym a home away from home.
A great place. I love a lot of people here. For a lot of years too. They have everything you need to get yourself in shape and become a badass. I know the owner. A lot of the coaches and a lot of the people that train there. I've worked with many of them. Cool gym too.
Brad is one of the best instructors i have come across. He is a great person as well. I've had the privilege of learning from him at multiple camps and seminars. A person would be lucky to learn from Brad.
Brad and his students are great humans and Soulcraft is a top notch facility. If you are in the area and you are interested in learning the art of jiu jitsu you have to go check out Soulcraft!!!!
I attended a seminar at Soulcraft Martial Arts. It is a very welcoming atmosphere. Brad is charming, accommodating, and best of all an excellent JiuJitsu instructor. The other students are friendly, and the gym is spacious and clean. I wish I lived closer so I could visit more often. 100% would recommend.
I haven't trained at Soulcraft Martial Arts yet. But, I spend quite some time on the mats with Professor Brad Wolfson, be it his classes at globetrotter camps, rolling or having the honor of hosting him as guest teacher at my acedemy. Brad is great teacher, who - you can tell - really enjoys teaching. Besides his technical skill he also knows how to pin down even more complex techniques or principles to some easy steps, making it easy to follow him. I think he's agreat gut and really appreciate his style of teaching and hope to hit the mats together very soon. Absolute recommendation! Go see for yourself ;-)
One of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academies in CT. It is absolutely gorgeous inside. Very clean facility coconut water readily available. Brad is a highly professional, technical, and knowledgeable Black Belt Instructor. He has years of experience from all over the world. I highly recommend Soulcraft Martial Arts to everyone. Ossss
Extremely knowledgeable instructors and a friendly training environment. Brad is always striving to make the school better and to help each and every student regardless of age, skill, ability.
Great place run by great people. Highly recommended.
Soulcraft Martial Arts is one of the best places to learn vital skills to defend oneself and to have a blast doing it. My experience training here has been nothing but professional, informative, safe and fun. I highly recommend!
Great instructors with wealth of jiu jitsu knowledge. Good training partners, good facility, and no other place I’d rather train.
I trained here for several months before I moved out of state. I'd trained long-time before in striking arts, was somewhat new to BJJ. I thought the BJJ instruction was excellent & the people were great to roll with.
I was able to attend one of Brad Wolfson's seminars at a Jiu-Jitsu camp a few years back, and I'm still using some of the pointers/techniques even to this day! Brad is knowledgeable, professional and patient with his instruction, and I'm looking forward to running into him again sometime in the future. Highly recommended!
Just started training here and can’t say enough good stuff. The coaches are always emotionally present and clearly invested in your training. Their passion for jiujitsu and teaching is tangible. I am grateful for this being a newb not only for the quality instruction but how their teaching style is reflected in their students. Everyone here helps you be better. If you are thinking about joining, JUST DO IT!
Speaking for the Woodbury Soulcraft location there’s no lack for attention to technique. If you don’t get it at first, Ed truly cares enough to make sure you will the second time.
If you’re looking to participate in a sport that provides opportunities for fulfillment and accomplishment regardless of athletic ability or aptitude then look no further. Age, body type, previous experience just don’t matter! The coaches here will bring you forward from wherever you start. You’ll get better, you’ll feel better, you’ll develop practical problem solving skills and it’s a great workout. I’ve never found another activity that combines so many good things. Your only mistake is not trying!
Fantastic school. Clean and welcoming with top notch instruction. Brad and company are the best.
Great community! They somehow balance intense, rigorous training with fun environment. The instructors are amazing. Join this gym. Even throughout COVID they’ve put safety first and continued to push us. This is my happy place!
I love Soulcraft! I've been coming here for about two years now and it really is the best. Everyone is friendly, welcoming, supportive, and they provide a great environment to learn in. The coaches are excellent and really help you learn. Plus you always get a great workout in!
We had the pleasure to share the tatami with the Master Brad Wolfson , when he was visiting Baños city - Ecuador. He was our first amazing visitor. Thanks for share your Jiu-Jitsu from Soulcraft-Bjj and your Friendship. I hope to visit you soon. Good vibrations and blessings. Gabo Vaca CEO & Jiu-jitsu instructor Purple Belt Gorilas Jiu-jitsu Baños Ecuador
Stopped in while traveling after seeing the academy listed on BJJ Globetrotters. The facility is excellent, staff is friendly, and instruction is top notch. Couldn't have asked for a better experience as a visitor, and would definitely make this my home gym if i were from the area!
This is an awesome school that has helped me develop both mentally and physically. Ive never done any martial art before coming to soulcraft. Everyone is extremely welcoming and knowledgeable. Ive been here for just over 2 years and everyone there has become a second family to me.
The whole vibe at Soulcraft is perfect for learning BJJ. Brad and the other instructors are very knowledgeable, friendly and provide specific advice that improves your game. They know how to bring out your best by pushing you just a bit out of your comfort zone while still maintaining a supportive safe environment. For beginners, BJJ at Soulcraft is beyond welcoming and is a perfect place to start your training. For more experienced students, there is a lot to learn from Brad and the crew at Soulcraft, and lots of experienced people to roll with.
I give Soulcraft the highest recommendation. Soulcraft is the best school in New Haven. The teachers are friendly and knowledgeable. The gym is clean and welcoming to students of all levels. Soulcraft has several highly skilled instructors that have been with the school for many years. Soulcraft has multiple class times during each day, but I hope to see you on the mat in the evening BJJ class.
Soulcraft is a truly special place. The culture that Brad has cultivated over many years is so supportive and helpful for new people wanting to get into martial arts or krav maga or just fitness - and "veterans" drive from many miles just to train with these amazing people. Definitely lucky to have this place in the new haven area!!
Soulcraft is a fantastic Martial Arts Gym. I first joined because of a weight loss program they were running. The second I entered the building I was greeted by one of the coaches. Mike was a great enthusiastic guy, he is easy to talk to and I spoke to him about my apprehensions of joining this kind of gym and how I felt a little intimidated. He was so friendly and addressed all my concerns. After that I signed up. Over the next 6 weeks I got to know the owner and the other coaches and they were all so supportive and made me feel like family. They drafted up a whole meal plan with a grocery list, recipe book and tips to help me stay on track and they led the workouts for the program. The group workouts were really well designed and they coached me through all the exercises and even customized some of the exercises slightly for people when they were doing really well or struggling. I also got to try out all the martial arts classes they offered and I loved them. Some of the best coaching and most supportive classmates I have ever had. By the end of the 6 weeks I had lost 30 lbs, learned how to properly meal prep, and finally managed to do my first unassisted pull up ever in my life. The place is great and I would recommend it to anyone!
If you are looking for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the area, it is definitely worth your time to check them out. I visited Soulcraft while I was in Connecticut seeing family and was glad I did. The head instructor Brad Wolfson was friendly, knowledgeable, and explained things well. The students were welcoming as well.
On a college visit from MD with my sister, it was my time introducing myself to a new gym out of state and I was pretty nervous coming in. To put everything concisely, this place fosters the true essence Jiu jitsu and martial arts. Everyone was extremely welcoming, from the phone call with Rachel to walking into the gym with Mike, to the end of class and rolling. Brad made me feel welcome and at home, no egos at all, great mixed environment from old to young, men to women. Eric made an effort to teach me and explain new techniques as I drilled with him. This was one of the best things for me, getting to learn new techniques explained different ways; a new perspective. Can't say enough good things about this place, if I'm ever back in the area this is my go-to spot for sure. Highly, highly recommended.
Great instructors. Friendly, welcoming atmosphere. I highly recommend soulcraft martial arts.
The gents that I met at Soulcraft were simply capital fellows. I was a mere passer-through, only training with them for a couple mornings while traveling. Nevertheless they demonstrated the most space giving kind of hospitality as they allowed me to share the mats and learn from their deft experts. I know next to nothing about the jiu-jitsu culture in greater New Haven, but I can tell you this: Soulcraft is most certainly a place worth feeling out as you look for a jiu-jitsu stomping grounds to call your own.
This is the first time I do something like this and love it! With each class, I learn something new and sharpen previous moves. This is a great way to get fit, build resistance and self-defense skills. Danger is out there ladies!! ... It's better to be safe and prepared than sorry. Coach Britt Soden is the best! Thanks for introducing me to Krav Maga!!
A.W.E.S.O.M.E experience! I had not worked out for over a year when I signed up for the 6 week challenge. I had all kinds of aches and pain. I was actually a little scared as to what this challenge might entail. Well, 6 weeks later, my aches and pain are GONE! I am only sore from working out. That's a good sore, no? I no longer have to reach for the Tylenol. My core is stonger. I feel so much healthier. And I'll take coach Mike's vision impairment to my benefit, I lost 10lbs. The Paleo diet wasnt so bad, its how we should all be eating anyway. Great experience! Coach Brad and Mike are very experienced, positive, tough, in a good way and their sense of humor make the workouts not so stressful actually kind of "fun". Its a Love/Hate, I think Im going to die, cant believe its over, I think I want to go back kind of feeling. Join now, you wont regret it! :)
Soulcraft is an amazing school. I've been training Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai here for a little over two years and love the atmosphere and quality instruction. There is a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and students from all walks of life. All the instructors are great teachers and very technical and detailed in their instruction. Whether you (or your kids) are looking to learn self-defense, get in shape, or even compete, I think you will find Soulcraft a great fit. After 2+ years training, and many new friendships, I cannot recommend Soulcraft highly enough.
I went to Soulcraft Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for a krav maga class. The class was free because I had never done any sort of martial art before. I loved the professionalism of Soulcraft Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. There's poster with their rules, and you see it as soon as you walk in. For example, knowing that I am to keep talking to a minimum helped me absorb more information from the instructors. I felt very welcome and respected. They are flexible with payment schedules, MAJOR PLUS. I highly recommend to anyone looking to learn martial arts.
Great experience overall. Basic exercises done in intervals to the point of muscle fatigue combined with Paleo diet. You will see results before the end of the six weeks if you are committed.
Verry bad, the man there i don't know his name white man unfriendly man, with a very small broken ear😂 this team no way search another gym🫂
