Quit bjj in like 2014 Was revived by shorties. Chill atmosphere but still good competitive way to burn calories and learn some BJJ
Mike is a fantastic instructor and competitor.
Great people in and out. Come through if you want to challenge yourself!
Switched to Mike’s gym after moving to south Philly, fantastic environment. Attentive coaching, always rolling partners available, great mix of no-gi and gi
Shorty's is nothing short of exemplary in BJJ training. Intro classes M/W/F provide a strong foundation for anyone interested in getting into the sport and learning the fundamentals. Advanced and competitive classes offer great ways for anyone to improve their game and get into competition. On or off the mat, the coaches and members treat everyone with great respect and decency. This is a great place to train, whether you are a novice or seasoned competitor. Come train with us!
Best gym in the world
As a rooster-weight BJJ practitioner, I haven't found a better school. Every class feels like you are a kid in the candy shop who gets to explore the nuances of each technique. I've trained at one other place in Philadelphia and two places in Florida, and this is by far my favorite academy. Mike, the owner, does an excellent job separating the class between beginners to get the repetitions they need and advanced practitioners to get the necessary technique. The atmosphere is anything from ego. Tap early, tap often. As an older practitioner, I also haven't felt threatened by being injured, which hasn't been my experience in my six years of practicing jiu-jitsu—this speaks to the culture that Mike fosters at this studio. If you are looking for an intelligent school and approach to your BJJ, I would stop looking and drop in and check this place out. Chris, one of my good friends, highly recommended this studio. Thank you for all that you do for the studio, Mike. I can't thank you enough for your impact on my jiu-jitsu practice, OSS!
I cant say enough about how great Shorty's is. I found jiu jitsu amidst the pandemic and haven't left ever since, Shorty's was the first and only gym I checked out. From the small space on Lancaster Avenue to the new location on Baltimore Ave it has kept me constantly coming back. I have fallen in love with the sport, the people and everything that comes with it. Not only is it a great place to train it is filled with great coaches, training partners and new friends. This gym is very welcoming and caters to everyone's needs. From the day one white belt to the high level competitor its a fit for anyone. Everyone here is here to help their fellow teammate and has no issue slowing things down to help their partner. I couldn't have asked for a better place to spend my nights.
This is a great bjj school. I got to spend almost 3 months training here, wish I could stay longer. I have never tried bjj before coming here and I got insane skill progression in just a couple of months. The schedule is amazing, you can go to classes both before and after work on weekdays and go to open mat on weekends. At first I was really nervous to train not only with women but with men too, but the community is so friendly here that I got comfortable quickly. And all the instructors are super helpful and willing to spend time on you. Huge respect to Mike for building such a wonderful community.
Great local place to learn BJJ. Open to all levels. Have had a great experience and kids classes are awesome too!
Awesome gym with chill folks that are both strong and technical. Dropped in for a no gi class while visiting Philly and everyone was friendly, cool, and had solid skills. Will definitely be back!
I’m a beginner that was looking for a sport that I could tolerate and do routinely. After trying a few things, I found this gym and figured I’d try BJJ. If you can’t stand the idea of aimless exercising, then a martial arts like BJJ might be a good way to trick your brain into intense movement. Yes. That was literally my rationale for trying the sport out. Anyways this gym is very welcoming of all levels of fitness, the teachers are extremely knowledgeable, and there’s a community vibe. I’m happy I found this place and would recommend to others who find solo exercises at the gym to be mind numbing. BJJ as a sport is fun and confidence building.
Our daughter has attended the kids classes here for almost 4 years. The coaches are incredible with the kids. They offer a great balance of fun, challenge and encouragement, letting them play but also pushing them and challenging them to grow both in strength and skill but also in being respectful and responsible. We're so happy we found Shorty's!
dropped in for a class while I was in town, everyone was super chill and I had fun. Took away some new techniques to surprise the locals at my home gym. Got a chance to working from standing which not all places do, so that was nice
Mike Short is an A+ JJ practitioner with a squad of really tough, technical students to prove it. Shorty's has one of the best vibes in the city. Zero egos, just amigos. I always feel welcome. Deluxe.
Really hard to overstate how great the environment is at Shorty’s, everyone is super welcoming and supportive which really helps soften the difficulty of learning a new thing. The owner is approachable, friendly, and a good teacher, which in many years of martial arts I can say I’ve only seen a few times. This is a hidden gem/gym in Philly that you can’t afford to miss 🔗
Shorty’s is great. Everyone I’ve met from here is super nice and very skillful. Mike (the owner) went out of his way to be kind to my wife and I when we first opened our school and has been super cool ever since. I’m happy to see Shortys doing well and am glad that the good people there get to train under such a great person!
I've been a friend of Shorty's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Philadelphia for some time now, and it's a decision I'm incredibly proud of. This academy is a beacon for those looking to learn or advance in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The diversity of the students in terms of age and skill levels is impressive. It's a place where beginners feel encouraged and advanced students are constantly challenged. The coaches' expertise and dedication to each student's progress is commendable. The gym's location on Baltimore Avenue is convenient, and the facilities are well-maintained, creating a perfect setting for learning and practicing. Shorty's is not just a gym, it's a community where respect, perseverance, and improvement are the core values. Whether you're new to the sport or looking to refine your skills, Shorty's is the place to be.
Shorty's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an outstanding academy in Philadelphia that genuinely lives up to its reputation. As soon as you enter, you feel welcomed into a community where everyone, from beginners to advanced practitioners, can thrive. The gym, located on Baltimore Avenue, is perfectly suited for grapplers of all skill levels. The atmosphere is inclusive and supportive, making it an ideal place for students of all ages to learn and grow in their Jiu Jitsu journey. The instructors at Shorty's are not only highly skilled but also incredibly approachable, fostering a learning environment that is both rigorous and fun. They pay close attention to each student, ensuring that everyone gets the most out of their training. In conclusion, if you're in Philadelphia and looking to either start or continue your Jiu Jitsu training, Shorty's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu should be your go-to place. It's more than just a gym; it's a community where you're guaranteed to improve and enjoy every step of the way.
Great place to train (with the best old school hip-hop soundtrack). Laid back during instruction and off the mats, but comp class will show you what you're made of.
I travel full time for a living and have had the privilege of training at different schools nationwide and I can attest to the level and quality of teaching here at Shorty’s Definitely TopTier…. And the atmosphere is positively unmatched they welcomed me and showed me brotherly love from the very first instant I stepped onto the mats… oooss
Very fun, very informative, cool coach, cool teammates. Great place to learn Jiu-jitsu, for all ages and levels.
Everybody was really nice with me, I had cero experience training martial arts 🥋
Love this place! Been here for about 3 months, everyone is super welcoming and helps you learn a lot fast. Women friendly is a huge plus!!
The greatest jiujitsu/gym experience of my life. I’ve trained at a lot of different gyms over the years on the road and at home. Nothing compares I’m really glad I came here. The friend and family atmosphere the technique. I feel like I’m apart of something great here.
I have trained at Shorty’s for over a year and absolutely love it. The environment is welcoming and encouraging, and the coaching is fantastic!
Who needs therapy when you can attend Shorty’s BJJ studio? As someone with no previous martial arts experience, I figured getting my butt handed to me daily would be the ultimate cure for a rough summer. And boy, was I right! 😂💪 Now, when I say my butt got handed to me daily, I'm not kidding! I've probably made friends with every speck of dust in that studio by now. Despite being the most unskilled student, my instructors and classmates were nothing but respectful, kind, and encouraging every single time. Amidst the pain and forgotten techniques, I found myself feeling better with each class and leaving my house with a smile. For those who are serious about jiujitsu, you can be sure you’ll find skilled training partners here, and for those whose schedules are tight and can only make it occasionally, every time you do come, you'll be greeted warmly and you will face an exciting new challenge. Beyond just being a place for practicing jiujitsu, Mike has created a tight-knit community where everyone can feel included. This is more than just a business venture – it's about fostering a sense of belonging. If you're still unsure about joining Shorty’s, consider this a friendly suggestion: give the classes a shot. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
Trained at Shorty’s while traveling and had a great experience! Clean, nice gym and detailed instruction from Mike.
In town for a wedding and got a great class in with these guys. Thanks for welcoming me in and sharing some knowledge.
I've been training at Shorty's for a few months now and my only regret is that I wish I joined sooner. Not only does Mike do a phenomenal job creating a welcoming and affirming environment, he also pushes everyone to reach their full potential when it comes to BJJ. I've learned so much in a short span. I highly recommend this gem, especially if you live in University City.
Highly recommend Shorty's to anyone interested in BJJ. From first-timers to advanced competitors, you'll find a spot here. They also offer a 3 class free trial.
Great group of people focused on improving their jujitsu and always willing to help newer members
Love training here at Shortys. BJJ can be a confusing martial art, but Mike and the other instructors break down techniques in an easy to understand way while making it a fun experience. The culture here is among the most supportive I have ever seen in any gym or martial arts school. Highly recommend checking it out!
Do yourself a favor and take them up on the free trial period! Im an upper belt who trains there. Shorty’s is great if you just want to get in shape or if you want to become a world champion •Shorty’s has a great fundamentals program (stuff that has always worked) •no macho meatheads and not an adopt-a-cop gym •A super kids program! •A hub for Philly’s women’s jiu jitsu •Mike pays attention to the newest competition meta (what does and doesn’t work at the highest levels)
I’ve trained at Shorty’s for nearly a year now. It’s been great to see the growth from a small, humble location to the current facility. The main instructor Mike Short and training partners are dedicated to supporting your development. Mike stays up to date with the latest jiu-jitsu techniques, competes in national and international tournaments, follows professional grappling, and trains with world class practitioners to ensure students are receiving the best modern instruction. Class structure: Warm-ups, technique drills, live drilling or open rolls. Facilities: Large primary mat space and secondary mat space in another room. Changing rooms, bathroom, and shower. Shelves for storage. Water cooler. Shorty’s Jiu-Jitsu is great for beginners, casual practitioners, or competitors.
Mike is an excellent instructor. Highly recommended, great vibes for everyone.
Honestly I just walked past this place, and looked in. Looks like a cool spot. I wish there was pricing on the site. I considered joining but I have such a tight budget right now, I didn't want to waste anyones time.
An awesome place to train. Great coaches. Folks are friendly and helpful. I’m definitely growing a love for jiujitsu here. The atmosphere isn’t uptight or overly competitive like some gyms. Lots of supportive team-spirit / good sportsmanship energy at Shorty’s. They have a FREE women’s class every single week, open to everyone (I’m non-binary), and they offer new people a free trial of classes, making trying BJJ out really accessible for everyone. Highly recommending this gym.
Training at Shorty’s has made me stronger, more flexible, and improved my reflexes. Whether you’re new or experienced, this club is a great place to grow and develop your BJJ practice.
I used to train BJJ about 10 years ago but had to step back as life got in the way. I decided to come back this year after a friend recommended Shorty's. I did my three free classes and knew that I had to get back into it. The owner Mike is an awesome guy and a phenomenal instructor. He is able to teach the basics as well as the most advanced techniques. The group is really welcoming and everyone wants to get better while having fun. There are plenty of classes and Mike is always open to adding others if the group is interested. There is no better place in the city to train. I can't recommend this place enough.
Very friendly atmosphere and a great learning environment for any level of experience
Great place to begin learning BJJ for the first time or for learning more advanced techniques. Super welcoming environment and great instructors.
This gym has shown me what it truly means to be in shape as well as how to be confident in my body
Excellent gym, great teaching staff and friendly environment. Kids classes, beginner classes, advanced classes, competition classes, women's class, and a class for old timers, they have it all. The kind of place that attracts the kind of people you are happy to roll with
I wish I had walked into Shorty’s much sooner because this place is fantastic! Mike is incredibly knowledgeable, extremely attentive to students, and most of all - an awesome person. His instruction is top notch. He emphasizes important details and explains rationale for positioning. The warm and supportive community makes for a great vibe while offering a range of training styles. This is an exceptional place - check it out!
Shorty’s is the first ever Jiu-Jitsu place where I started about two years ago and could not have found a better place. I was surprised how the instructor approached to me with full of dignity and respect. I thought the martial arts would be brutal and tough, but the atmosphere was warm that treats individuals as a family. Do not hesitate to try the first week free trial! Shorty’s is the great academy not only training hard physically, but also growing your mentality, such as being humble, learning attitude, and being perseverance. But the most important thing is that you will just love this place!
Great instruction, welcoming environment
As the one of the first students at this school, I have to admit it is definitely one of the best place to check out for any one looking to learn BJJ or already has a comprehensive knowledge of the art. As someone who already has their Purple belt I went in with a fear that everyone would be out to get me lol, in fact it was the exact opposite and they have been more than welcoming and asisting me plug up the holes within my game and move forward on my journey in BJJ!
Shorty's is amazing! Mike (owner) is a thoughtful, friendly BJJ instructor. This is a really solid community, everyone is friendly, no big egos, everyone comes to have fun and learn BJJ.
Excellent black belt and brown belt teachers with quality jiu jitsu and judo instruction. Clean, friendly environment and great location. Let’s get this work baby
Dont be fooled by the outside look of the building, Mike is running an amazing school. He's an incredible instructor, and everyone that goes to class is always willing to help. If you want to learn BJJ I cant recommend this place more!
Family friendly environment. Welcoming to beginners of any background.
This gym is awesome! All of the instructors are extremely skilled and passionately dedicated in training anyone who walks through the door. You are definitely getting more than your money’s worth. The welcoming attitude from everyone in the gym made my experience that much better.
Extremely welcoming and friendly gym with good parking excellent instruction for both adults and children!
Dropped in for an open mat, everyone was very welcoming and a pleasure to train with. I would definitely recommend this gym to anyone in the area.
Excellent training and atmosphere. Love training here when I get the chance.
Sideco and Mike are both experts and very welcoming. This is a great place to begin jiu jitsu or for people at any level looking for a good place to roll. Since it’s a smaller environment you get expert attention from the instructors which can be a problem at larger schools. Their schedule is great for students or anyone working full time. There’s always a slot to train. Definitely check it out.
Enthusiastic staff, inviting atmosphere, and wonderful location!
Friendly and clean atmosphere with highly qualified instructors!
Clean, friendly, and educational environment
Excellent quality friendly environment and very educational
Great instructions, techniques, and effortless spirit.
Best Jiu jitsu school take it from me

The is an awesome gym. The instructors are highly qualified and the gym has a great atmosphere.
