Shorty's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

  • Really hard to overstate how great the environment is at Shorty’s, everyone is super welcoming and supportive which really helps soften the difficulty of learning a new thing. The owner is approachable, friendly, and a good teacher, which in many years of martial arts I can say I’ve only seen a few times. This is a hidden gem/gym in Philly that you can’t afford to miss 🔗

  • I’ve trained at Shorty’s for nearly a year now. It’s been great to see the growth from a small, humble location to the current facility. The main instructor Mike Short and training partners are dedicated to supporting your development. Mike stays up to date with the latest jiu-jitsu techniques, competes in national and international tournaments, follows professional grappling, and trains with world class practitioners to ensure students are receiving the best modern instruction. Class structure: Warm-ups, technique drills, live drilling or open rolls. Facilities: Large primary mat space and secondary mat space in another room. Changing rooms, bathroom, and shower. Shelves for storage. Water cooler. Shorty’s Jiu-Jitsu is great for beginners, casual practitioners, or competitors.

  • Mike Short is an A+ JJ practitioner with a squad of really tough, technical students to prove it. Shorty's has one of the best vibes in the city. Zero egos, just amigos. I always feel welcome. Deluxe.

  • dropped in for a class while I was in town, everyone was super chill and I had fun. Took away some new techniques to surprise the locals at my home gym. Got a chance to working from standing which not all places do, so that was nice

  • Who needs therapy when you can attend Shorty’s BJJ studio? As someone with no previous martial arts experience, I figured getting my butt handed to me daily would be the ultimate cure for a rough summer. And boy, was I right! 😂💪 Now, when I say my butt got handed to me daily, I'm not kidding! I've probably made friends with every speck of dust in that studio by now. Despite being the most unskilled student, my instructors and classmates were nothing but respectful, kind, and encouraging every single time. Amidst the pain and forgotten techniques, I found myself feeling better with each class and leaving my house with a smile. For those who are serious about jiujitsu, you can be sure you’ll find skilled training partners here, and for those whose schedules are tight and can only make it occasionally, every time you do come, you'll be greeted warmly and you will face an exciting new challenge. Beyond just being a place for practicing jiujitsu, Mike has created a tight-knit community where everyone can feel included. This is more than just a business venture – it's about fostering a sense of belonging. If you're still unsure about joining Shorty’s, consider this a friendly suggestion: give the classes a shot. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
