Truly an extraordinary experience! I came to them broken and out of shape and in a few months I was doing things in my late 40's that I haven't done since my early 20's. The environment is supportive encouraging, reassuring, uplifting, engaging, and positive. Because of the coaches and the upper belts believing in me and pushing me to stay consistent I am able to achieve things I never thought possible. This gym has had such a profound impact on me that I encouraged my wife and kids to join as well. We now settle our family problems on the mat :,)

2 years ago, my husband approached me again regarding putting our autistic son in martial arts. For years he would lightly bring it up and I was adamantly against it. For whatever reason, I decided to be "somewhat OK" with signing him up, but I knew there was only ONE coach in this entire metroplex that I trust with my son and that's - Joao Somalia (owner of Rockstar Martial Arts North McKinney and North Prosper). He was more than HIGHLY recommended by close friends who have had kids that have trained with him for close to a decade. My friends both knew our son and knew what he'd need to be successful. There are 2 Rockstar locations that are closer to our house, but we drive for Somalia & Tayla. If you are in the McKinney or Prosper area and are looking for a martial arts gym for your child - give them a try.

Professor Somalia has trained my son since he was 4 years old and my daughter since she was 6 they are now 7 and 9 years old, I decided to join around 3 years ago and my wife as well. It’s a great atmosphere for kids and adults that Coach creates he is a Champion through and through his passion for BJJ bleeds onto all of his students he is a great leader and role model on and off the mat he treats everyone the same you get what you give we were blessed when we spotted his facility and forever grateful for the continued experiences we get to have and looking forward to the growth with Coach Somalia.

RockStar Martial Arts in North McKinney is Nothing short of Amazing. Coach Somalia and Coach Tayla pour much more than their knowledge of jiu-jitsu into their students; they provide their students with support, encouragement, and life long lessons. Each class my children have learned both skills on and off the mat. They are learning how to make better decisions in their personal lives to live to the highest level of integrity along with learning to grow stronger on the mat each day. I am so glad that we decided to join the RockStar family. We would never go anywhere else. My son started here about 5 months ago and has truly loved going. The coaching staff is top notch and they are methodical with the instruction as well as patient. Coach Joao has an calm and deliberate method of coaching. It affords the students a lot fo time to practice the movement of the day.

He takes a personal interest in his students and pushes them to achieve their best. There’s a lot of schools around with good coaches. Joining Rockstar with coaches Somalia and Tayla has been hands down the best parenting decision for our family!! The discipline and work ethic taught in every class has my son exceedingly performing in his school work as well as at home. Since the first day at Rockstar with Coach Somalia I knew it was going to be a lifetime thing. Coach Somalia just brings happiness, smiles, and comfort at the gym. He will push you to your limits and might get a little upset, but he does it because he loves you. I started when I was about 7 years old, and was already being pushed to my limit of success, but that never stopped me. Now I’m a yellow belt training with the adults. I still love joking around and making people laugh, but I still train to make a difference. Just about a year ago I knew I wanted to start teaching the little Rocksters and kids, so I talked to Coach Somalia about it he agreed that it would be a good idea. I can be having a bad day, and just hearing the little ones saying “Coach MaKenna can you help me”? it just brightens my day. You can tell there is more than just BJJ training there; it’s a family. Coach Tayla started to get me into the office manager stuff, and just going to say it i’m 100% better on the mat. Coach Tayla is like a sister to me, and is always there to help. When Coach Tayla and I are teaching she brings a different energy to the class. It’s the part where they both have the “power” to make up smile. All in all, Rockstar North Mckinney is an amazing gym, and I always can’t wait to be there to see everyone.

We love Rockstar! Coach Tayla and Coach Somalia are the absolute best! My son would rather be at jujitsu than anywhere else. He has learned so much and has a great time. Coach Somalia is very encouraging and pushes them to be their best. My son even wanted to write his own review! Here’s my son’s take on Rockstar: Looking for a martial arts place? This is the one! As a student I have really enjoyed my classes at Rockstar Martial Arts. I have also learned a lot from Coach Somalia and Coach Tayla. They are great leaders and kind. I’ve really enjoyed my experience at Rockstar! The coaches are so friendly and even though I’m brand new to Jui Jitsu I feel supported and encouraged at every class. There is a definitely family feel to this gym and each time I go I feel more confident and positive about learning and working with their team!

My daughter been going to Rock star for past 6 months and loving her time there. I personally like the quality of training she is getting. Rock star is like family who watches after her. Class size is little bigger than I prefer but it’s still manageable. Love their occasional “parents on a Mat” day, which allows parents to work out with kiddos.

We LOVE LOVE LOVE RockStar Martial Arts. I tried to get my son involved in all kinds of sports and he was not motivated and easily aggitated at the practices and games. However, this experience with all the wonderful coaches and staff at RS has been extremely wonderful and I wish we would have gotten him started in this years ago. It is incredible to see changes in my son just in the last few minutes. He enjoys everyone in the class and always look forward to his next class that week. I can't wait to see where he is going to be in another few more months through their extraordinary coaching.

Coach Somalia and Coach Taylor are THE best. My 5 year old has been going to Rockstar Martial Arts now for several months and she takes away so much. Not just BJJ techniques but life lessons that I carryover at home. When she has her off days, the coaches are nothing but patient with her and encouraging regardless of how much she is willing to participate on those days. So grateful for these coaches and this studio. She has so much self confidence and loves showing off her skills, especially the arm bar. Thank you coaches for being amazing. We have been coming to rockstar for a little more than a month. It’s been a great experience. The staff are great and the students are never just sitting around. They also offer character lessons which is great. Overall, it is a great place to bring our 6 year old. We will be here for years to come.

RMA truly meets you where you're at while equally challenging you to advance to the next level. This gym has become an essential part of my family's life. We've gone through a lot this last year and we have found a home here. The coaches, atmosphere, quality of classes, and people have impacted me and my 3 kids in a more profound way than I ever could've imagined. I have enjoyed the challenge, technique, and intensity of adult classes while my kids are welcomed in the environment Coach Somalia and Tayla create here. My kids have embraced their competitiveness and have found an outlet to work hard and make new friends. I cannot express enough how much I recommend this gym and respect the coaches and what they have created here. Well, I'm 46. I wrestled in school and trained bjj thru my purple belt in my 20's and 30's, but I always lived so far from my old academy that it was hard to be consistent and progress. When I got married 5 years ago, I stopped all together, but it ate at me every day. I started looking at schools, then covid hit. In November, my 4 year old daughter had a conflict at preschool on the playground, but didn't have the tools, words, or strategy to handle it, so she kicked the boy in the face. I knew the solution so the next week I found Coach Somalia, rightdown the street. He is a world class top tier competitor. He is legit. I read his long list of international pro level accomplishments so we both went to class to try it out. My daughter is in the 3-4yr old class. I honestly don't know of anywhere that someone of his class teaches ever single kids class. Most schools have a higher belt student teach kids in trade for a deal or something. My daughter gets trained by a world class competitor and teacher every single class. She loved coach Somalia day one, talks about him constantly, and loves going to jiujitsu. As for me he has been patient, letting me ease back in as I get in better cardio shape. Now I am in class 2-3 times a week, I still get gassed but I can do the whole class, roll hard for a little while at the end of class, and leave sweating and smiling. At most schools, you have a target on your back, everyone testing and wanting a shot at you immediately. Coach Somalia created a unique culture of understanding, patience, and encouragement. I feel old and sometimes intimidated but since day one he has watched out for me, forced me to ease in when he could tell I was spent, and has kept the whole experience positive, fun, and challenging. He is a incredible coach to me and my daughter, and supports us as parents as a outside role model and is 110% trustworthy to teach, coach, spend time, advise, correct, or whatever is needed for my child. For you or your child, it's hard to describe the positive change in ones life that happens with excellent coaching. Do not miss this. I went here recently for an amazing seminar with Renato Cantu. The gym is super clean, organized, and has a great waiting area for parents/spectators. The classes are super helpful and everyone was so welcoming. I came from another gym, and it was really wonderful to work with such friendly and chill people. You don’t find that everywhere. I learned new techniques which helped me a lot , I made new friends, and I highly recommend their gym.

Coach Somalia and Coach Tayla are both wonderful and do a great job teaching, so much so that I joined up this year to learn jiu-jitsu myself. And Coach Somalia is the world black belt champion, so if you are going to learn, he is the guy to go to.

Our son has been in attendance at this location regularly for about 6 weeks and we are so happy we made the decision to enroll. Coach Somalia and Coach Tayla are so wonderful with kids of all ages. They are patient, kind, and encouraging yet firm with the students. The kids all enjoy the classes so much. We really appreciate that the classes highlight so many important characteristics. Athleticism of course, but also teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, kindness, humility, and discipline. We also appreciate that monthly enrollment fee gives you 3x a week sessions to really reinforce all of the physical and mental skills the kids acquire.

Coach Somalia is incredibly patient, focused and incorporates fun into each session. He takes the time to tie loose belts, explain moves 1 on 1 during class if needed and knows each and every kid. Our son absolutely loves going to class and has improved so much in just a few short weeks, both in the gym and at home! Tayla is amazing, she takes the time to greet every person that walks through the door and make them feel welcome. It is very obvious that both Coach Somalia and Tayla thoroughly enjoy what they do and truly care about all of their students. We are so happy we found them!

Our 6 yr old absolutely loves this place. We are so lucky to have Coach Somali . He works so well with all the kids . Their anti bullying program is top notch. I can't say enough good things about this place. They even went to my daughter's school to have lunch with her. She was talking about that for days. They care very much about the kids and truly want them to succeed.

Great place for my son to learn the sport. The coaches are absolutely amazing with the kids of all ages and skill. Good place to learn discipline, get some exercise and enjoy being little martial art people. Very cool to see my son in his Gi working hard to get the take down and submissions. My son loves it! I see a sense of pride in him.

Coach Somalia and the team at RockStar Martial Arts truly care about their students on and off the mat. Not only is he teaching our son how to be confident and respectful to others, but he also reaches out to see how his students are doing at home and school and is willing to address any issues that he can. Our son absolutely loves going to class. It has been great watching his transformation over these last two months and we look forward to seeing him continue to grow both in jiu-jitsu and as a respectful, focused kid.

Our 9 year old son absolutely loves going to martial arts. This is the first sport he hasn’t tired of. Coach keeps them engaged the entire class and makes it fun. As parents, we love the physical activity it provides and the way coach intertwines life lessons every single class. Our son looks up to coach and martial arts has been a positive thing for our family all around!

I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. My son loves it there! Coach Somalia is very involved with his students. He really gets to know them individually and is willing to spend time with them one on one outside of class. In addition to teaching martial arts, each class involves a lesson on kindness, thankfulness, etc. He's really trying to help his students be good humans, and I'm so thankful my son is a part of this.

Coach Somalia is an amazing coach and mentor to his students. He takes the time to know every student individually. My son suffers from extreme social anxiety. His anxiety was compounded after being assaulted at school by another kid. Since he began working with coach Somalia, his confidence has soared tremendously. My son’s teacher told us that he has come completely out of his shell since starting at Rockstar. I absolutely love Coach Somalia’s approach to teaching his students self defense. “Talk, Tell, Take down”. He teaches the kids to confidently use their words to resolve conflict before resorting to physically defending yourself. And I love how he engages the parents. Every 3rd Saturday he allows the parents to join their kids on the mat to work on different techniques. I cannot express our appreciation for Coach Somalia enough.

I highly recommend Rockstar in North McKinney. Coach Somalia is perfectly suited to instruct both new and seasoned students. The atmosphere is 100% positive and the instruction is world class. I train here to stay in shape, expand my technical knowledge as well as meet a great group of new friends! I would especially recommend this academy for anyone that is wanting their children to learn to protect themselves against bullying as well as develop self confidence and self discipline.

My son is 5 years old and had struggled to find a sport that he really loved, when he did the trial run at Rockstar martial arts in McKinney, I knew we had finally found a good fit for him. My son looks forward to going to Jiu-Jitsu everyday and loves showing off his "moves" and learning new ones each week. Coach Somalia and Tayla are absolutely amazing. You can tell they both love what they do and want the best for each child. Coach Somalia is patient, kind, and at each practice sits and has a nice inspirational talk with the kids. My son has learned better listening skills, learned how to focus, more confidence in himself, how to protect himself if needed, and most importantly how to treat others. I am so happy with our decision to join Rockstar Martial arts and my younger son can't wait to one day do it too! Any boy or girl would benefit so much from joining- I highly recommend!!!
