I had been thinking about taking jiu jitsu lessons for years, and finally decided to give it a try after a coworker recommended Pittman’s academy. I’m glad I did, learning jiu jitsu has been a ton of fun and very exciting, especially getting to try sparring. The environment here is great, I’ve made friends and it’s been a pleasure training with the other students and instructors. Not to mention, you’re going to be given all the information you could ever hope to have about this martial art, and the more you study it, the more fascinating it becomes. All in all, I’d say Pittman’s preaches great values and technique.

Started training at Pittman Jiu Jitsu almost 2 years ago with 3 of my young boys (ages 4, 7, 9 at the time). Immediately I was impressed with all the instructors and staff. Their curriculum was great and age appropriate for all of us. Similar to a Bible study or church on Sunday, what I learned in the adult classes was scaled all the way down to the youngest children which led to great discussions in the truck on the way home and throughout the week. Respect for self and others is not just taught here; it’s a prerequisite. I’d give a 5-star rating on the Jiu Jitsu and Martial Arts taught here alone by Professor Pittman and the staff, but the discipline exemplified and honed on the mats is what will keep us coming back. Pittman’s is helping me raise strong men who know self-control and who will be contributing members of our community for decades to come.
This is probably the best place you can go to learn how to defend yourself. Pittman does not care is you are tall or short, Skinny or fat, or if you Weak or strong. What Pittman cares about is that you come to the dojo and work, and do that work consistently and diligently. If you can do that for Pittman, he will teach you, what is in my opinion, the best self-defense martial art you can possibly learn. (Also be prepared for some dark humor, it one of the other perks of learning here)
I've been training here since 2019. The staff and students here are all of good character and are always enjoyable to be around. You definitely learn to be more disciplined while coming and improve in many areas beyond the martial art itself. I have always left better then when I arrived, and plan to continue coming for the foreseeable future.
Mr. Pittman's Academy for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is very professional. I've enjoyed going to each class and come away learning more about self-defense and myself in general. Mr. Pittman is giving lessons to me and my family (of twelve) for the price of two adults. He is very flexible with the payments. His teaching is detailed and tailored to different belt ranks and ages. Each technique is broken down point by point instruction. He will use allegories and other stories, sometimes with humor, to speak to the emotional/mental logic of a fight. The other instructors are certified professionals who understand and are committed to their students. All Mr. Pittman asks only that you do your best, be respectful, and willing to learn. He is committed to giving his best. I am committed to giving my best. I will continue attending Pittman's Academy for years to come.
Professor Pittman and his instructors have been amazing with our son. You can tell they all care deeply about the people who attend, and they aren’t just a number. They go out of their way to check in during the week and make sure he is doing well and enjoying learning. Our sons confidence is building, and he always looks forward to going to class. I personally enjoy listening to Professor Pittman give his inspirational messages while everyone is stretching before class. We looked at a few other places before choosing Pittman (thank you, Chief Guerra for the heart to heart over the phone before we even stepped inside! I was ready to throw in the towel) and were disappointed to say the least. I am so thankful we decided to send our son here! I encourage anyone new or experienced to check it out!

“Pittman Jiu Jitsu”🥋I used to come here as a kid growing up & I stopped at a green bar. I just now returned , after 2 months of being back again it brought back the peaceful feeling of what I used to feel as a kid. Walking into the dojo you know automatically your with the best hands that teach the art “jiu Jitsu” it’s a mellow setting with a mixture of knowing your going to learn something new everyday. Pittman’s (Academy) jiu-jitsu is something we have been looking for a long time! Our son was having troubles in school (paying attention, manners, etc.) and ever since day ONE all his troubles have gone away! He’s more focused as well, his teachers and family have noticed a huge change. Our son gets extremely excited to attend for lessons! The instructors are amazing! They know how to engage and teach every age, which is a tough thing to do, but they all work as a team and manage it very well! I learned about Pittman Jiu Jitsu through a course that was offer by Texas Tech. The value of this program became clear very quickly and I soon enrolled into the private academy. Not only is this a solid Jiu Jitsu curriculum (a thoroughly thought out and crafted lesson plan - I personally have seen the work that went into its development), but it also expands into every aspect of your life (not just on the mat). I can confidently say that 10 years later the 2 years I spent under Klay Pittman developed me professionally more than any other job I have had. I owe a lot of my profesional success to his training on and off the mat. Like with many things in life, you get what you put into this program. If you dive in head first and follow his instruction, you will gain more than you could imagine.
We stared this a couple of months a go and they’ve taught my daughter so much and is a very good place my daughter love it and I am so happy that she got the chance to do this it is help her build confidence and help her come out of her comfort zone

I’d like to start this review by saying a huge thank you to Pittman Jiu Jitsu and their wonderful staff! In the little time that I have spent at this academy I have had an amazing experience! As a sometimes shy and hesitant individual I didn’t know if jiu jitsu would be for me, but I really wanted to learn some self defense. In my short time there I have gained so much more than just training. I have gained confidence, knowledge, and life lessons that I will take with me wherever I go and apply them to all aspects of my life, not just defending myself. I have also never felt healthier both physically and mentally. The strength I have gained from attending lessons has changed the way I see myself and has helped me realize I can do anything I put my mind to. None of that would be possible without the amazing staff and the environment that they have created within the academy! Making the commitment to go to every lesson is not difficult because they are welcoming, understanding, and passionate. Great family-oriented place to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I enjoy how Mr. Pittman meets you at the level that you are at, but still pushes you to learn and grow. Great for both beginners and advanced skill levels.
My Son and I have been attending classes, and training together for a few weeks now. The instructors are amazing! Not only do they explain the lesson, they identify flaws in technique, and quickly correct them. They also allow, and encourage my son and I to pair up and work together. Very refreshing to show up for class at an extremely clean dojo, and learn from a group that promotes the importance of family bonding and growth. My nephew had trained at Pittman's for years before joining the Marines, so when my son showed an interest in martial arts, I knew where to go! I had an opportunity to train alongside my son, which has been a huge blessing for our family because we are both having fun, getting exercise, and learning valuable self-defense skills. These training lessons have been a highlight of my week, and I am so very grateful to carve out this special father-son time. Our experience with Pittman Academy has been stellar. Amazing lineage, incredible knowledge and skill, very family friendly, great culture (everyone including students are incredibly friendly and kind), and everything is grounded in reality (no katas breaking flimsy boards etc). In addition, for me and my son we greatly appreciate the values. American culture now a days is very transactional, everyone just wants to come in, not talk to anyone, and get what they paid for. But that's not how you breed success in life or martial arts. Professor Pittman goes out of his way to help people understand that martial arts at it's best is like any high value community. You should find friends. You should be challenged. You should find your values uplifted. And in end, you and everyone around you become better people. I did notice there were a few 1 star reviews here. I was surprised to see that they often said the instructors were amazing. How do you give a gym with amazing instructors 1 star because of price, when the classes are less than $10 a lesson..? The only other reason I saw, were people complaining about the values. To that I would say Brazilian Jiu Jitsu isn't designed to be like Cobra Kai style karate. If I were professor Pittman, I wouldn't want to spend my life teaching folks to beat people up either. It's a way to keep out jerks that would otherwise make training miserable for everyone else. If you or a family member is interested in learning Jiu Jitsu from the highest ranked American instructor under the Gracie / Machado family, in a way that will challenge you (or them) to not only be able to defend yourself, but be encouraged to take the core values and apply them to be a better, more responsible, and fulfilled person, I would strongly recommend you trying out their program.
Its been a real experience attending Pittman's Academy, the staff are very respectful and knowledgeable, the facility is family friendly. I don't feel as I'm competing with anyone and I'm challenging myself. I have enjoyed every class, looking forward to achieve my goals.

Professor Pittman I attended your school back in 2003 to about 2008 off and on. I started with Mr Pool' before he became an instructor. Brandon " bobcat" Mulleher was one of my and Mr Pool's instructors. Your father Mr. Lynn always attended and gave me such great confidence with the way he would cheer me on after practice.You all are the best I even meet and train with Royce at your school which I still can't believe to this day. You all changed my life for the better and now more than 10 years later my 3 Sons will soon be there. Thank you for the experience and can't wait to see my boys in your school and start this new chapter at Pittman Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Pittman's Academy is a phenomenal place with stellar instructors. Mr. Pittman's credentials are amazing, but he also has high morals, ethics, and standards....things that are commonly lacking in today's society. From a family standpoint, it's an excellent place to build upon core family values all the while learning self-defense and building confidence. The techniques taught are all rooted with safety in mind and are predicated on an opponent who is bigger, faster, stronger than you. While athleticism and strength are always important, the techniques taught don't require you to be the larger person to be victorious. From an individual standpoint, it's an excellent place to work on BJJ mastery, self-improvement, and a warrior's mindset. Coming from the Marine Corps, I've always had a deep ethos for leadership training and demonstration. Pittman's Academy has very similar "Leadership Traits" and is involved with arming you physically as well as mentally (arguably more important). For those who have never had this type of training, it's priceless. For those who have had this type of training in the past, it's recognizable and motivating to receive it again. It's very rewarding to be part of an organization that embraces this. To sum up this review, I enthusiastically recommend Pittman's Academy. There is no where else I would rather train, nor anywhere else I'd rather my son train.
I took classes here in undergrad and LOVED it. I didn’t come for long, but I ended up at another Machado school near Fort Worth. At both schools the culture is amazing, the teachers are highly knowledgeable, the safety is next-level, and it’s so much fun! I can absolutely recommend this school as a dad, a grappler, and a doctor! 🙌🏼

WORLD CLASS BJJ. As an athletic guy in my 20s, I was immediately humbled by several of Pittman's red bar black belt students. Smaller, older, slower, it didn't matter. These guys had me gasping for air or wondering "what just happened", as they calmly defended my attacks and maneuvered from arm locks to chokes etc... Going on two years of training , I now see the power in these techniques. Professor Pittman is the real deal. He builds students upon the fundamental techniques. By the time his students reach red bar, there is no situation that has not been trained and discussed in detail. Equally as impressive is the kind and courteous atmosphere of his academy. Professor Pittman's training history speaks for itself, leaving me with only one question. What is this world class instructor doing in the forsaken desert wasteland of West Texas? 10/10 Recommended
When I first arrived to Pittman's Academy, I came in timid and nervous. I've never had experience with any form of martial arts or self defense. Now, I'm going for my first degree black belt and I go in ready and determined to learn something new. I thank God for giving me this opportunity to learn from Professor Pittman and Ms G. People of God determined to share His wisdom as well. Here I learn the importance of wisdom when in a situation that might become physical. Though I have never been in a fight or started one, I now know what to say before using what I have learned. Pittman's Academy has taught me that's not all about strength, but wisdom about handling the situation. I highly recommend this Academy for adults and children. Especially for college students like myself.
As an MMA fan jiu jitsu has always been something I wanted to learn, I was gifted a free month of training at this academy and haven’t missed a class since. It’s a positive environment with a friendly and kind staff, I’ve even rolled(sparred) with students at other schools and the techniques I’ve learned translated perfectly to those situations. I’m glad I took the opportunity to try out the academy and encourage others to do the same!

I am very impressed with Professor Pittman’s dedication to his students and the overall experience with the academy. I’ve trained and visited numerous gyms over 3 years and have never seen a gym that emphasized core values, becoming a leader, and applying those lessons learned outside the gym. The attitude of the students is all about sharing and continuous improvement. The staff are very welcoming and the number of black belts assisting classes speaks to the value they have gained through this academy. This is a serious place to train for serious people.
My family and I have been attending this Academy for over a year now. From ages 20 to 3, all of our children participate in the classes. We've seen better self control and increased self confidence in our children. The instructors are helpful, and if there's ever a legitimate question about how to do something, someone always shows you what to do. I'm a slow learner, so I've had plenty of questions to ask. As a woman, this is out of my comfort zone. But, I knew I could learn self defense techniques in a controlled setting to prepare for the unexpected. Bad guys don't care about your comfort zone when they decide to assault you! Mr. Pittman's Jui Jitsu Academy is helping all of us achieve our goals of becoming confident in protecting ourselves and as well as in other areas of our lives.
When I was a kid I learned to fight throwing kicks and punches, which can get very ugly and messy. That kind of fighting could ruin a persons good name and testimony. I joined Pittman's Academy being a bit sceptical of Jiu Jitsu, thinking that it was mainly for wrestlers. But by the third lesson I was convinced that everyone should know this style of fighting. You can finish a fight very quickly and clean using the techniques that are taught by Mr. Pittman and his instructors who are under him. I am grateful for their time and respect that they give to their community.
My family and I have been training at the Pittman Martial Arts Academy for over a year. It's been a fantastic experience, and I expect we'll all continue training up to Black Belts. Mr. Pittman, Mr. Bates and Ms. Alan have done a great job training all of us. I appreciate the safety, expertise and no-nonsense instruction of all of the instructors. My children range in age from six to twenty. At this point we're orange belts which is among the lower ranked belts. But I would say for myself and my older teenagers that, against someone on the street where self-defense is called for, we're all more than capable of handling such a situation. And finally, I'd like to give a word of appreciation to the black belts that come into spar. They've helped me improve my grappling, and always been willing to teach me how to be better at Jujitsu, and it's much appreciated.
Mr. Pittman is an amazing man who truly cares for people. Mr. Pittman and his academy has truly touched my 7 and 8 year old daughter's lives in an unbelievable way. They will always be changed in a positive manner from this awesome experience. I truly recommed this academy to everyone!

My wife and I started taking classes a few months ago and have enjoyed our training lessons. This is definitely a step out of our comfort zone, but the staff and Professor Pittman are well knowledgeable and encouraging during times of confusion. My 4-year-old daughter and I have been going for 4 months now and couldn't be happier. This is one of the best places to learn Jiu Jitsu. Top quality instruction with excellent explanations. Many BJJ gyms can be harsh; Pittman's has an encouraging and friendly atmosphere. Once you reach a sufficient level, your skill will be tested in real sparring, but always in an environment of mutual respect. We train hard, but it is not about egos. It is about personal growth. Bring your family and children. Professor Pittman knows he has a world-class product. If you decide to jump in, make sure that is what you want to do. There are other good Jiu Jitsu gyms in the area, so try those out. Me and my husband started 1 year ago and we have improved our marriage jiu-jitsu has given us time to spend together doing something we both love and recently our 2 sons have decided to join jiu-jitsu as well.The instructors are very professional and well prepared and the atmosphere has always been so warm. Wonderful place to be and wonderful experience!!! 100% happy that we joined !!!
Great fundamentals for life skills. Entire staff upholds the values held by Mr. Pittman. Every class has been informative and supporting traits that make a great leader. All the activities engage the entire family. Fun, educational and a safe place to learn life long skills.
Excellent place to not only learn techniques to protect yourself, but learn critical thinking in situations you deal with everyday. They are all very professional and friendly. They have wonderful teachers, and I fell honored to say that I am a student at the Pittman Academy!
My family and I joined Pittman's Academy around September 2019 and have enjoyed attending the classes together. While I have not been able to make classes due to work, my husband and son continue to go. They look forward to going and enjoy the way Professor Pittman teaches and interacts with the class. It's been a great family experience.
Enrolled my boys in the Pittman Academy for Martial Arts. They are enjoying the training and having a great time. They can't wait to go each day. Mr. Pittman has been very encouraging to them and they seem to be learning a lot. They go several times per week and always come away with exciting things to tell me about what they've learned. They are having fun and have met some very nice students that have helped them with the techniques, as well. It's a great atmosphere and I appreciate the high level of respect and honor that is shown by the staff and being taught by all the leaders.
Love this place! Have seen an absolute turn around in my grandson with his attitude and outlook on life! His confidence has improved to the point from not being able to talk to anyone to having no fear to ask questions and to talk to adults without fear. The instructors and Mr. Pittman have instilled in him a willingness and desire to set goals and have the same mindset for respect and rules that I have at home which makes my “job” easier!
Honestly(and this was roughly a year ago), ran into some of the instructors at the mall. It's been some time since I last done any sort of sparring or martial arts. I thought it would be a good thing to join into. And at first, it kind of was. Except for how pushy they were about me joining. Very very pushy and almost predatory with no room for thinking it through. I ended up taking a few classes and came to the conclusion of ending things. What really sold me on ending it, was how I was talked to. It was disrespectful and condescending. It could have been a good place but with the practices going on, I had to skedaddle.
I've tried Pittmans gym coming from a background in BJJ so I know a little bit about jiu-jitsu. From a competitive standpoint it was a little underwhelming the skill level in their higher ranking belts was definitely lacking. "Black belts" not knowing what to do ect. The training felt like it could use some improvements very slow pased didn't learn a lot. If you have a kid who's interested in Jiu-Jitsu by all means Pittmans is wonderful. If your looking to defend yourself I'd recommend a different gym.
He doesn't make you earn your belts.. if you have the money to pay you get belts. There are not enough teachers for the amount of students. Not a good place to learn. My son went to him... they ignored him.
Don't even consider this place. My son and I signed up for the basic training which didn't seem bad. We got about 10 lessons done then my son started an extra class on the only day we would go so I decided we can go during the summer well life happens and now we're moving. So I called to let them know we're moving and if I could get a refund of the sessions we didn't complete and the gentleman said no they have a zero refund policy. He stated that if I had done monthly payments he could cancel them but since I had done them a favor and paid for them in full he couldn't refund me anything. With that statement alone just shows that this place is just MONEY HUNGRY. He stated that I had time to finish all the sessions before summer but when they were trying to get me to do the black belt training that there was no time limit but all of sudden I have a time limit on my sessions. It doesn't make any sense. So with all this said don't sign up for this. If you do, do the monthly payments and stay in the Lubbock area for the rest of your lives.
They want to preach that is all about family but they want to just sell sell sell and then when as a family you determine is too much money for you to spend for a 4 year they have already sucked your information in and now say that due to a contract they will be still deducting monthly payments of these services that are not being rendered. They want to talk about a contract that was never explained in detail and a copy was never provided and where always saying that they were flexible but they really are not. They give you all documents together to sign and fill and not one time did the mention any disclosures for cancelations. Well the financial stability of the "family" should be first and they want to try to appear like they care but they don't. Be very careful! Is all about the money for them. Oh and most comments are asked to be made by you in the trial period.
Would not attend this school. After signing a contract with Pittman. He eliminated the 6am class(which is the main reason I came to him) and then changed it to all white Gi’s after I had bought 3 colored Gi’s. Effectively making his membership useless to me.
I received a call today from none other than Mr. Klay Pittman. In true John Kreese from Cobra Kia form, and in a fashion similar to Bart Reagors phone calls shown on the news, Mr. Pittman called to explain to me how a comment on Facebook was a lie and threatened his livelihood because the comment was untrue. Out of all the complaint that Mr. Pittman has on Google reviews and other forums that are longer and more descriptive then my own, he deemed my less then 20 word comment the most threatening to his business. My comment said something to the effect of the pricing was too high, and you have to sign a contract practically selling you first born child to pay for. For a comment like this to move a person so bad must make it the truest of all the comments. To really break down this opinionated comment, the prices are extremely high considering the amount of jujitsu training you get vs morals and values training and as far as the contract, Mr. Pittman told me he has never changed the prices since he was 17 years old... hint hint maybe a change is needed. Mr. Pittman explained how the contract was for them to meet their obligations but not necessarily for you to meet the obligations of payment but if you are a day late or a dollar short you will receive a call asking for payment. They even go as far as to threaten to put a negative inquiry on your credit report for non-payment. Mr. Kreese aka Pittman continued to use his bullying tactic to try to entice me to remove the comment but why would I remove it if not only freedom of speech protects my comment but also the bit of truth in it. Mr. Pittman showed me how much ego and a narcissistic attitude would make someone actually look up my number to call me directly when most would just dispel, ignore or respond on forum for everyone to see. Mr. Pittman I think you should check your reviews there are worse reviews then mine that may threaten your livelihood more than my little comment ..please seek them out and show them the same morals and values you showed me on the rant phone call you gave me.
Did anyone else pay more than $775 for 3mo beginning lessons? This was set up for a Single Parent w/3children and only one attended training & on limited income. They said they were giving her discounted rate? Anyone else?
How many of ya'll were asked to give a review about this money making McDojo? Pittman is all about the 💰 money, you pay you get to play and get a blackbelt for the low price of 300 hours. He even takes money from his assistant instructors who helps teach other students. Just a little weird if they are on staff. No go here
Not what they promise what they talked about in the first meet.lasted only like 15min. But sure did change us $695 hope we can get our money back. Let's see. Kids running around with yellow belts. No structure for the kids if u not a teen or adult don't bother.
Gives you the feel of a slimy used car salesman. Lots of pressure to but right away. Hurry, hurry, hurry sign this contract and give us your bank account info because now we have you locked into paying our crazy high prices. Yuck.
Gym owner has an inflated ego. The prices are high and they pressure you into purchasing right after the introduction. Pittman imposes his religious views on students. Could be good for kids that need a solid background in self defense but would recommend looking elsewhere
The coaches and instructors under pitman are absolutely top notch most of the people here are really great students and all my biggest issues with this dojo is they treat it like a Time Share business. The sales personel will bait you to coming in for trail classes however immediately at end of firstclass they pressure you into enrolling for classes. i ended up paying for a full year upfront (1500.00 plus) and only went for 3 months mostly due to scheduling conflicts. Also came from 7 years in a Tae Kwon Do dojo in another city where the main instructor was not walking around beating his chest like Main Instructor Pittman does. If you come here take his coaches classes as they dont make you listen to "life lessons" at the end of each of his sessions.
I was very disappointed with this academy. I took my son there thinking it was going to be something good for him but it turned out to be the opposite. At first the staff were very nice and polite to us. We were really excited to start but then once we signed the contract everything went down hill from there. They were so rude to us and acted like they didn't have time to talk to us or answer my son's questions. My son loves to learn new things so he is always wanting to ask questions but professor Pittman would always act like his questions were not important. That made my son feel bad. I took him there so that he can learn respect and discipline, but how could he learn that if the staff there doesn't even know about discipline and respect themselves. They don't do this for the kids they do it for the money. To me it's a total waist of money because they don't take the time to show them properly. Sometimes my son was confused on the techniques and the staff did not bother with helping him. They went and helped other kids that new a little more. My son did not like going there because they always made him feel like he was no good for Ji Jitsu, but my ex husband and I would lift his confidence and wanted him to finish because we want to teach our son that if he starts something he needs to at least try to finish. We did try to finish because we paid a lot of money for him to go there even though he didn't learn much and the staff doesn't do a good job in teaching it but when professor Pittman is questioned by my son's dad in why he didn't want to answer his questions he decides to kick my son out of his program. I do have to say he did give me back some of the money for the classes that he still needed. I just wanted to share our experience so please becareful if you do decide to take your kids here. I wish someone would of given me a heads up that this place only like to make money and not there to teach kids the real purpose of Ji Jitsu and that is self defense. Excuse my son does not ask inappropriate questions. He is a smart and respectful kid. You are offending me and my son. If you had problems with my son or my family why didn't you bring this up before? Why is this the first time I am hearing this. You know my son is a good kid he does have a learning disability and we discussed with with you at the very beginning and you were ok with this and now you want to come an offend him like that. What kind of person are you? So you think kids with a learning disability ask to many questions you might want to say that at the beginning that you don't take kids with challenges because you can handle the extra time it takes to teach them. That just shows you are not in it for the kind act of showing people self defense. I am so hurt by you right now by discriminating my son due to his disability.
