Having participated in many martial arts in the surrounding Pittsburgh area, this is by far one of the best you can find. You will build yourself physically, learn to defend yourself, develop mental discipline, and overall will grow in many areas. If you are looking to for a place to start martial arts, Oom Yung Doe should be top of your list.
Posted 1 year agoUnder Instructor Lily’s clear and knowledgeable guidance in the Moving Meditation course I was introduced to a sequence of movements that not only brought awareness, strength and flexibility to my body but also to my mind. I continue to go back to this sequence and always feel so grounded afterwards. The warmth, integrity and support of the staff, as well as the programming at Oom Yung Doe is unparalleled! A gift of wholeness for mind-body-spirit!
Posted 1 year agoOom Yung Doe is the best and most effective traditional martial arts school I’ve found. This network of schools has locations across the US and recently added online training which allows me to continue my studies remotely as well. I trained with head instructor Ian and instructor Lily at their Boston locations, and am thrilled to have one available in Pittsburgh now, within driving distance of my current address. “Eight Martial Arts taught as one” is the unique philosophy that will expose you to many styles of movements and self-defense techniques, which not only improves your skill at martial arts, but your mind-body connection and life overall. The basic curriculum is perfectly paced for all levels to grow in their flexibility, strength, endurance, and mental toughness through vigorous daily warmup exercises, learning the basics of punches, kicks, and stances, and progressing into patterns and forms of traditional styles (including weapons). Eventually, students will choose two advanced forms to learn from the Master Level Teaching team who visits schools around the country. The first form I learned at this level gave me a complete practice that has revolutionized my style and ability and allowed me a personal practice I could carry with me even when away from the local classes as I’ve moved around. It must finally be said that the instructors at this school (which goes for the larger network too) are strong, thoughtful, kind, and intentional about helping meet you where you’re at and continually working for that next improvement that you feel in your everyday life. I highly recommend checking out this school if you haven’t already, even if you didn’t think you were a “martial arts” type of person! Similar to yoga, dance, or other athletic training, there is something for everyone here.
Posted 1 year agoI never thought I could (safely) resume martial arts training at retirement age, but this marvelous school has made it possible. My strength, balance, agility, and focus have improved immensely over my first year at Oom Yung Doe. The instructors are determined to help me develop into my very best self, physically, mentally, and spiritually. I'm immensely grateful for Oom Yung Doe's training and the heartfelt community and fellowship with amazing people of all ages.
Posted 1 year agoSince beginning my training, I have noticed huge benefits to my mental and physical health. Not only do I feel much sharper mentally, but I am much stronger and more flexible than I have ever been. Through daily practice, it has even improved a chronic health condition. But what really makes it the best experience I have ever had is the instructors. They truly dedicate their time to sharing the knowledge they have learned and encouraging students to become the best version of themselves. I would encourage anyone to get into a school and begin training. It will be the best gift you have ever given to yourself.
