More for the students but my wife's running club use it as a base. So no real experience of it inside apart from the toilet. Foyer always clean and fresh.

The Gym's decent but would probably be good with some more machines rather than half the gym taken up by some cables. And of the machines that are there they're bad makes like the T bar row, the chest rest is very small and just puts a lot of pressure onto your chest so you can't breathe while completing your set. Also the heavy bag is in a bad location and is in poor condition. I wish the gym had better opening hours aswell, 7am-10pm on a weekday and 9am-9pm on a weekend is kind of bad for a gym that has a lot of members and the gym is usually quite full as well which I think better opening and closing times would help with that because people like myself can go at better times like early in the morning.

Great facilities needs some staff that actually care about the place. Very good facilities, but the gym is normally an absolute mess, and the staff are normally watching some football or brainrot behind the desk. Last year lots of items also went missing including safteys and clips on the squat racks, and staff didn't seem to care about that either.

I’ve attended the university gym for the duration of my degree, and i have some thoughts to share. The biggest strength of the uni gym is you are almost guaranteed to bump into your friends as it is quite small. And on the most part, the staff are lovely. However, the gym facilities are extremely poor. Not only is 1/3rd of the gym floor taken up by cardio equipment (that is full maybe once or twice a week), but the equipment constantly falls apart (classic technogym) and the machines themselves are subpar. I am 6ft2 and the lat pull-down is too short to get a full stretch, there is an overwhelming amount of cable machines when what us gym goers need is more plate loaded machines. The gym cannot accommodate more than 100-120 students without everything being taken. Easy fix, get rid of half of the cardio equipment. If people want to run, they can run outside. Secondly, stop furnishing the gym with only cable machines. Thirdly, invest in actually good equipment, namely ‘Hammerstrength’ or ‘matrix’. If you are a prospective student and you love going to the gym, I urge you to consider NRG in chillingham, PureGym in Eldon square, or even the Northumbria gym. I hope this review is helpful. It is definitely honest.

Gym equipments alright, nothing special for a university gym, probably on the worse side when u consider they still use technogym and life fitness. The REAL problem is the staff: Some days theres maybe 2 members of staff in the whole building sat at the main desk. Any staff in the gym? Forget about it. Not to add that the gym staff for the most part dont look they they have any experience with the equipmement. Try asking them where anything is 🙄. Could've been a great opportunity to hire university students instead as a part-time role, but graduate employment in this economy? Forget about it. Also the cheek to close on "early may" bank holiday. NRG in byker doesn't slack like that ❤️.
