I came to Belfast as a backpacker from Australia not knowing where to train. I popped into New Grounds because their day class suited my schedule and I never looked for anywhere else. Situated on the 3rd or so floor of a building, the gym is beautiful, brand new Fuji mats and a view overlooking the hills. the front is a strength and conditioning area and the back is the mat area where the action happens. I was greeted by Reidy, one of the owners of the gym. He only asked if I had trained before and after that, I was welcome as far as he was concerned. It's a nice feeling when they don't care what belt you are, just that you want to do Jiujitsu. Over my short time in Belfast, I have made many friends at New Grounds, they have taken me out to dinner, shown me around town, driven me to spectacular beaches. New Grounds has a solid blue and purple belt cohort with female grapplers as well. The culture of a gym is as important to me as it's level, and the culture is lead by it's leadership. If I come back to Belfast, my first stop would be to New Grounds to see old friends.
Posted 6 years agoA cutting edge city centre gym. No expenses spared here - a fantastic mat space, near-by parking and all the required facilities. Great place to train in the evenings or over the lunch break during the week. Most importantly an amazing atmosphere created by the coaches and members with their approach to training and community driven ethos. If you are visiting Belfast or looking to start your BJJ journey, get in contact!
Posted 6 years agoWhat an amazingly friendly and welcoming gym! This was my home-from-home while i was in Belfast for work this week. I emailed in advance to find out about training times and was invited to drop into any class that was suitable for my grade. The guys and gals here were so welcoming. Visiting a new place can always be a bit daunting, but I was made to feel right at home. Thanks all for the great rolls!!
Posted 1 year agoI joined NG at the start of the year, have trained at one other gym for about a year and a half and I have visited quite a few other gyms and this gym has to be the best one. The facilities are top notch, well maintained and cleaned well, a changing room for women which can be hard to come by in this sport and showers. The coaches are absolutely brilliant and offer so much support and advice and pay attention to their students! The vibe at the gym is very team orientated and everyone supports and helps one another which is something that is brought about by the amazing coaches. I couldn’t be happier here and honestly can’t think of any negatives!
Posted 2 years agoI attended New Ground over the weekend for a seminar, I have to say I have visited many BJJ gyms all over Ireland and New Ground is definitely in my top 3. The building itself is quite unique and situated in ideal location with parking and food places nearby. The conditions of the gym are extremely hygienic. The coaching staff are among the most warm and welcoming that I have encountered and they made everyone feel part of the New Ground experience. I will definitely be coming back any time I'm up in Belfast. 10/10 would recommend to anyone in the Belfast area that wants to enjoy Jiu Jitsu in a top class facility.
