I dropped in while visiting Richmond from out of state, and I couldn’t have had a better experience at Mongrel taking Coach Jesse’s class. The coaches and all of my training partners with were kind, knowledgeable and had great technique. I felt so welcome here even though I was just passing through. As a female I felt totally comfortable at this gym. Hopefully I’ll be back to visit in the future. Thank you Mongrel!

Mongrel is a fantastic place. From day one you will be welcomed in and made part of the family. Everyone there is vested in getting better and helping you to get better. From hobbyist to competitor, you will find what you need here. I didn't start until I was 46 years old and it has been the best decision I've made in decades. If you want something to improve your overall life, this is it and there's no better place than Mongrel.

Best place in town for BJJ. Was new to the sport when I started there. From the word go everyone I met was willing to help show me the ropes. This place it's more than a gym it's a second family
This gym is incredible. It’s hands down the absolute best bang for your buck. Access to as many classes as I want, for as many programs that are offered as I want, free events like watching big fights together, loads of encouragement and support for those that want to compete, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. JB and the other coaches care deeply about your progress and I always feel comfortable to ask questions. No big egos, just killers. Absolutely love it!
Mongrel is an awesome, family-style martial arts gym. The Jiu Jitsu program is second to none in all of Metro Richmond. And most importantly to me is how they treat people....with respect and consideration.

Awesome place. Very friendly staff. professional. Covid safe.Very accommodating to adults and children also. If you're not into jui-jutsu they have Muay Thai judo and a couple things that I'm not remembering.
Initially this place was amazing. I had been searching for a martial arts school for almost a year once my daughter turned 5. They were very welcoming and my daughter loves it. Why I didn't give five stars? is because it seems like who ever "knows" the owner/Master acts as if they run the place. They talk loud, stand in front of the chairs where parents sit to watch their children. So it makes it tough to be proud and watch your child. No one says anything to them so they continue to be obnoxious and standing there talking loudly. They sometimes have adult conversations out loud which is very unprofessional when you are trying to enjoy watching your child. Great school they actually teach your kids BJJ and not just have them sitting in the corner. If they police the people who "know" the owner this place would be a perfect five stars. Update*** Owner is a man of his word. All issues were quickly rectified. Unfortunately we moved far from this school so we had to transfer our daughter. She was very sad. I have changed my rating to 5 stars.
Great instruction and community. If you are looking for a BJJ school in the midlothian area, you won’t find a more dedicated and supportive team. Whether you have previous experience or are just starting out, JB and the Mongrel crew will make you feel welcome. The instruction is top notch, and all of the upper belts are great to work with and clearly care about their team mates.
Always friendly, always helpful and everyone makes you feel welcome. You can be a returning member or a brand new person, and it is always welcome. The martial arts programs, both jiu jitsu and karate, are amazing! The teachers are helpful and accommodating!
