Nick taught for a brief time at Queens Jiu Jitsu in Astoria Queens and left a big impact on myself and my training partners Amazing attention to detail and very effective positional training. Very attentive to students and their specific needs. Stayed for open mat and rolled with various students. Students willing to go hard and students there for some fun light rolls.

Awesome gym to train at, came for a drop in class and the instruction from Coach Nick was really good. I had some good rolls with the students showing good jiu jitsu and I enjoyed the welcoming environment of the academy.

I thought I was joining the BJJ gym to learn self defense (and boy did I learn and used it—story for another time), but instead I got a new family. We have gone from strangers to families that take care of each other even outside of the gym. The instructors at Monarch are extremely detailed oriented with their instructions and patient with newbies like me, who has no background and way past my prime. But if you trust the process, you’ll see huge improvements once you put in the work. The instructors are active competitors in the tournaments themselves so you are not getting outdated stuff. My wife even tells me I am nicer and more patient since I started at Monarch, lol!

I've been coming here since it opened. Nick and the other coaches are amazing at what they do and show a true passion for teaching this art. It's always the highlight of the day coming here to train with everyone. Highly recommend Monarch for all newcomers and experienced athletes alike

It’s a super clean gym with really great friendly people. Coaching is top notch. Definitely a place to get better at competitive juijitsu but still has a good mix of hobbyists and beginners.

All the instructors at the gym are highly knowledgeable and super attentive. Doesn’t matter if you’re entering the sport or have been in it for a number of years, everyone gets a great amount of attention to develop their skill set. Amazing community as well within the gym. Would definitely recommend this gym to everybody!

I’ve been training at Monarch since it opened. The owner/head-coach is Nick, and his love for the sport is easily recognized. Because of that, some of the best and brightest jiu jitsu minds on Long Island have been attracted to the academy, whether that be as coaches, students, or people just stopping by for open mat. Now, there are a lot of jiu jitsu schools on Long Island — and a lot of good ones, at that. But the thing that separates Monarch from those gyms, in my experience, is the atmosphere. There is room at Monarch for every type of practitioner, whether you’re just someone looking to stay fit and learn self defense, or looking to compete at the highest level in the sport. This is reflected by the diversity of participants in any days classes, where you can routinely find people from day-1 white belts to competitive brown and black belts, high-school to near retirement, short to tall, thin to wide; all in the same class, treating one another with respect and bonding over a mutual love for the sport. It helps that any technique being taught is effective, taught with attention to detail, and applicable for any level. Still, at Monarch, the instructors teach not only techniques; but also, by modeling, they teach students how to effectively problem solve for the sport. It is not uncommon to see an experience-diverse group of participants working through a problem together for an hour or so after class, because they want to get better, they enjoy the process, and they just aren't quite ready to go home. All in all, I have really enjoyed my time here, my grappling has improved, and I’ve met a ton of people I am really happy to call friends. Highly recommend!

I’ve been training at Monarch since it opened. The coaches are excellent and the atmosphere is very welcoming! The gym is open to all; young and old. If you’re a first time jiu jitsu practitioner, this is the school to start your journey.

Monarch is honestly one of the best gyms I’ve been to. Jiu jitsu can be so intimidating, especially for women—but I felt so comfortable walking in with no experience. The environment is really positive and Nick, the owner, is a fantastic instructor. Soo happy I started my jiu jitsu here and would highly recommend!

Dropped into Monarch for an open mat and couldn’t have felt more welcome. The facility was clean and well maintained and everyone there was incredibly friendly and helpful. Going to a new gym can be can feel intimidating, but the vibe and training here were really great and took all of that feeling away. Highly recommend training here if you’re in the area.

Absolutely amazing place! The instructors are all great and truly work with you to increase your skill. Even in a class filled with different skill levels, they cater to your needs and make you feel very comfortable. The gym is very clean and always sanitized. The owner, Nick, is incredible and makes the gym feel like a second home. He is also an amazing instructor and has a way of teaching that truly sticks with you. You can tell he truly cares about every person attending the gym, and even sends emails with updates and the skills learned that week!! Everyone is very welcoming and it’s always a mix of educational, fun, and motivating when coming here. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

My two boys who are 7 and 4 have been attending Monarch since July. Coach Nick G and his team are incredibly supportive and patient with my four-year-old. I see the confidence they have developed. The classes are well-organized, fun, and engaging. The coaches possess a high level of skill, knowledge, and discipline in their techniques. I would 100% recommend Monarch to kids who want to learn and boost their confidence.

Did an intro class with the owner (Nick) and it was a great experience. He taught three techniques and his explanation made it easy to follow. I stayed for open mat afterwards and the community was very welcoming.

I was visiting from Sarasota FL and dropped in for a class. The atmosphere was friendly, inviting and the school was clean as a whistle. The bathroom was fancy and had a shower. The classes were well structured and the techniques were thoroughly explained. Coach Dylan reminded me of my coach from FL a No Gi specialist which I prefer No Gi. If I lived in Long Island I know this would be the primary school I would train at. 5 star school without a doubt

My 5 year old goes and he is obsessed. The instructors are amazing, professional, and have a lot of patience with the kids. My son is learning and having fun at the same time. He gets super excited to go and i love the confidence and discipline they build in the little ones. I highly recommend! The place itself is also very clean as well.

Easily the best place in Malverne for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. There are excellent classes for experienced students but this academy really shines in it's approach to fundamentals classes for new students (both adults and kids). If you're looking for a place with an awesome vibe and top level technical instruction you're in great hands here

Beautiful academy with stellar instruction led by head coach Nick Gullo. There are many class offerings held as early as 6am to evening hours for anyone with a busy schedule. Would highly recommend stopping in and checking out this high level school for anyone as a beginner or seasoned jiu jitsu athlete.

Coach Nick Gullo is one of the first upper belts I knew that I didn’t train with directly. Despite being very new at the time, he’s always been extremely helpful and welcoming. Training with Nick is a privilege that everyone in the area should take advantage of. On top of the world class coaching, the facility is extremely clean and well kept. Monarch Jiu Jitsu Academy is the top place to learn the art in Nassau county. Nick and his coaches really make someone who hasn't trained in a long while, feel comfortable and have a comradery with the group like I never experienced before. There is a good student to instructor ratio as well. Monarch set the bar very high with their dedication to instruction and support while drilling and learning.
