Midtown Jiu-Jitsu is a fantastic place for both training and personal growth. Coach Malachy, Coach Steph, and the entire team are dedicated, knowledgeable, supportive and truly passionate about what they do. The classes are well-structured with discipline and consistency, creating a great learning environment. They offer three kids’ classes Monday to Friday for different age groups, making it a perfect afterschool activity. My children started three months ago, and they enjoy taking classes. I’ve already seen such a positive impact, not just in their Jiu-Jitsu skills, but also in their confidence, discipline, kindness, and empathy. I highly recommend Midtown Jiu-Jitsu!!

We’d looked at several gyms for our daughter and this one was exactly what we were looking for. Coach Malachy and Coach Jess are firm yet kind, engaging and skillful. Their expectations are clear and consistent and perfectly aligned with our the goals of fostering self-confidence, discipline, empathy, and self-awareness we have for your children. I would recommend BJJ to anyone, my husband is even trying to find the time to sign up for a class!

As an educator myself, I’m constantly in awe of how incredible Coach Malachy and Coach Steph are with these kids! The coaches at Midtown Jiu Jitsu create a caring connection with each student while upholding firm and safe boundaries and giving clear and honest direction. Thus providing the perfect environment for growth, learning, trust and resilience. My children are thriving and I couldn’t be more satisfied with our experience. Through my children’s new found love of the sport, I too have started attending classes at the gym which has been amazing! The toughest and sweatiest workout ever with awesome people. We’re all hooked!

100000% recommend for kids and adults! Coach Malachy and his staff are highly skilled and dedicated. Since my son started here, I've seen remarkable improvements in his behavior. Not only has his physical strength increased, but his mental resilience has also grown significantly. I've also started taking classes here, participating in both the Fundamentals and Women's classes. It's an excellent way to push yourself, challenge your limits, and develop new skills.

My boys have been attending mid town BJJ for their youth class for a few weeks now. Coach Malachy is an excellent teacher as well as a mentor. He runs a strict class which is excellent for the age group class my children attend. All the instructors are helpful, patient and kind. My kids have participated in a lot of youth sports but this experience has been one of the best.

Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, they create a welcoming environment where everyone can grow at their own pace. Professor Malachy was an instructor when I lived in LA, and even when I moved to Texas, I kept in touch. When I was in the area for a work trip, I drove an hour to train at his own school. I arrived to see him teach the kids class, and it reminded me how much of an amazing teacher he is. Breaking down concepts in jiu-jitsu is no small feat, even for adults, but he did it in a way for kids that made it more concrete. I also appreciated that he carefully matched and paired duos during sparring, making sure that there was enough challenge to build grit but not so much that it would be discouraging. The time for adult class came, and he was no less attentive and detail oriented. Moreover, the sparring rounds were basically semi-private lessons as he went around workshopping techniques and answering questions. I've only held off on reviewing the school because I haven't been, but now that I have I can say that not only is the instruction good but the facility is beautiful and well kept. Pictures don't do it justice. Appreciated the warm welcome and thanks for the training!

I can not say enough good things about Professor Silva and Coach Bryant. They've been consummate, dedicated instructors and training partners and after having visited Midtown in person I can say that the facility they've built matches their work ethic and dedication. I go to watch how Malachy teaches the youth class and simultaneously hold high standards on how to perform, personalizes on each individual student's needs and still is empathetic and encouraging. Moreover, he doesn't water down anything for youth, the movements and technique stays the same. I was lucky enough to attend the no-gi class and was amazed at the amount of content and instruction he pushed and then as it opened to free sparring was calling out pointers and tips and while letting people work at their own pace. Extremely grateful for the opportunity to train here.

I can honestly say that I have not met many jiu jitsu practitioners more passionate about this martial art than Malachy. Every time he steps on the mat, whether it is to teach or to train, he paints a very clear picture of what loving what you do should look like. Malachy’s sacrifice, consistency, curiosity and grace are the most ideal qualities you would like to see in any teacher, especially if they are working with children. The jiu jitsu community is very fortunate to have a person with such high character and talent representing what are in this world. Armand D Rivers Instructor Renzo Gracie Los Angeles.

It’s difficult to put into words how great of a coach Malachy Silva is. But, I’ll try my best. I’ve known Malachy for over a year now. We came to Renzo Gracie East Los Angeles looking for a gym that could accommodate not just my husband, but also my son and daughter. It only took a week to realize that we had made the right choice going with RGELA. As far as Jiu Jitsu, Malachy is extremely knowledgeable. He is able to explain complex techniques in a way that makes it accessible to all students. His best quality, in my opinion, is the level of compassion he shows while working with kids. Jiu jitsu is not easy. Not all kids will grasp the concepts immediately. Coach knows this. He has the gift of motivating each child to improve and perform at their best. I can attest that both my son and daughter have grown immensely while training with coach Malachy. Another area where Malachy excels in is building assertiveness. Coach has helped my children make strides with their self confidence. If you’re looking for a gym that is ran by great people, Midtown Jiu Jitsu is the place to go.

Our daughter trained with Malachy from the opening of his East LA gym in 2022, until his final day this year. She was 6 years old when she started training and it was her first time in any kind of full time sport. She instantly fell in love with jujutsu and as parents, we felt very comfortable with Malachy ‘s teachings and interactions with his young students. His voice is firm but friendly and captivates the attentions of his students. There’s no messing around with Coach Malachy! He’s very technical in his teaching and prioritizes a good foundation for his students. We truly envisioned our daughter training with him for years to come and were so sad to see him go. It’s a huge blessing for all his future students at Midtown JJ!

I cannot recommend Coach Malichy enough! He has been instrumental in shaping not only my Jiu Jitsu skills but also my character and outlook on life. Coach Malichy embodies the true spirit of martial arts, teaching us that discipline, respect, and integrity are just as important as the techniques we learn on the mat. He creates a family like atmosphere where everyone feels supported and encouraged. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced practitioner, Midtown Jiu Jitsu will make sure that you receive attention and guidance while on the mats. His ability to break down complex moves into understandable steps has significantly improved my skills and confidence. If you’re looking to learn Jiu Jitsu, grow as an individual, and be part of a supportive community, this is the place to be. Thank you, Coach Malichy for everything you’ve taught me and for being a remarkable mentor and friend! Also Shout out too Coach Stephanie and Coach Eric!

Malachy is an amazing coach for both kids and adults. He's a true student of the art, and he does everything he can to share his passion with his students. He prioritizes safety, personal growth, and fun for his students. He has a keen ability to meet his students where they are and works to support them on their journey. If you want to compete, he will help you do that. If you want to get a great workout, meet some new friends, and have fun, he'll help you do that, too. Great all around coach.

Professor Malachy’s teaching and training is designed to provide students with an opportunity to learn Jiu Jitsu but what he actually accomplishes is beyond anything you could imagine. He will motivate you to become a better version of yourself and the community and culture that he creates is built on respect, hard work and a true sense of family. His youth program is exceptional, helping kids develop the ability and confidence to excel in jiu jitsu but also in life, instilling principles that are reinforced with discipline and physical/mental determination. I would encourage anyone to train at Midtown Jiu Jitsu.

I would highly recommend Training at Midtown Jiu Jitsu to anybody in the Hudson Valley Region. Malachy was my favorite teacher at an academy with no shortage of great instructors. What stuck out to me immediately was how closely he watched and everyone in his class to track their development and tailor his instructions to the individual as well as the group. When Malachy became the lead instructor at a new academy in Los Angeles I wasn’t the only person who added an hour onto their commute to continue training with Malachy. As a coach Malachy is attentive, supportive, pushes you to improve. As a leader he creates an environment that reflects his character - sincere, honest, reliable and dedicated - that is great for children, adults or competitors. I look forward to training at Midtown the next time I visit the east coast.

Malachy Silva is an instructor of jiujitsu that anyone can learn from. He cares about creating a safe yet hard-working environment, and teaches clear technique that works at the highest level. Beyond that, he pushes everyone to be their best and reach their full potential. Personally, he helped me grow as a person through jiujitsu in ways that I needed my entire life and served as a mentor to me as an instructor myself. In my 10 years of training, I have taken classes with a lot of BJJ teachers, and Malachy Silva is by far one of the most technical, patient, and committed instructors that I have had the pleasure of training with. He does a tremendous job of breaking down all aspects of jiu jitsu, from fundamentals and basic escapes to more advanced submissions and styles of guard play. He is also one of the kindest and most humble people that I have met on the mats, and his competition and coaching records speak for themselves. I cannot recommend him and his academy highly enough. Our 7 year old trained with Mr. Malachy for about 1.5 year and her growth and love for J.J blossomed while under his guidance. He showed the students the art of jiu jitsu in a way children could understand yet at the same time held the “little lions” accountable to the principles of black belt. Anyone could teach but we were truly fortunate to have someone who cared, took their time and instilled daily values, life lessons and life lasting techniques.

BJJ is incredibly fun and rewarding, but it is also very challenging! So many start, but so many also stop unfortunately after a year or even a few months. The difference maker is the instructor. Not only to teach and coach you through the journey of learning BJJ but to create a healthy, encouraging culture in the gym that makes you want to keep returning day after day. Malachy’s dedication to his students was absolutely apparent when he headed a school in Los Angeles. Students young and old trained very enthusiastically under his tutelage and the entire gym rapidly grew into a strong, supportive community which fostered fast learning and skills development. Anyone near this school should do themselves a favor and take a class!!

He definitely knows what are the kids needs and strengths. After I found out he was moving to a closer location to my neighborhood I didn’t hesitate to move my kids to the east la location. But when I found out he was moving to another state I was sad but at the same time very happy for him. If it was possible we would follow him to his new gym at a new state but unfortunately we can’t. I Definitely highly recommend coach Malachy for your kids to train with him because he well balances strictness with fun while training and his style of jiu jitsu is very technical and not aggressive and rough like other coaches/gyms Professor Malachy is one of the best coaches I’ve ever meet for kids, teens, and adults. So give yourself an opportunity to try one class and you won’t regret it, believe me you’ll love the sport.

I’m not here to see how excellent a coach and training partner Malachy is. I’m here to say how much I miss having him at Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Los Angeles! lol Midtown is lucky to have someone who can be a complete savage competitor on the mat one moment and immediately switch gears into a world-class coach who knows how to teach everyone from pro athletes, day one beginners, children, women’s self-defense, and any and every walk of life that you can imagine! There are a lot of good fighters out there. Few are good teachers, and few are gentlemen off the mats. Malachy is the whole package.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to train with Malachy for my entire 7 year jiu jitsu career. For the past 3-4 years he has been my main coach and training partner and has completely transformed my jiu jitsu, from both a technique perspective and also with regard to my mental acuity and toughness, and how I look at jiu jitsu, holistically. He’s a very talented teacher with an ability to explain things clearly and concisely while being knowledgeable, also, down to the very fine details. As an avid competitor himself, he is always incorporating the most current techniques and jiu jitsu meta and teaching skills that work in competition at high level. I’ve been training with Steph for about 4 years as well and she has been a huge inspiration for me with regard to training more consistently and with more intentionality. I had to really step up my game to keep up with her and I’ve taken many valuable lessons away from the time I’ve spent with her. Maybe most importantly, Malachy and Steph truly cares about their students and their success, both in jiu jitsu and in life. They comes into every class prepared and excited to share their knowledge, and to really connect with their students and training partners. They have had a huge impact on all of the younger students, particularly. I’ve watched kids and teenagers’ confidence, poise, and maturity grow along with their martial arts skills, and seen people’s lives transformed in the goals they are setting for themselves in their personal lives. Malachy and Steph are not only coaches, but also mentors to so many of their students. And for me, personally, they’ve become close friends who I cherish very much. My most fun and dynamic and flat out exhausting rounds are always with Malachy. We will miss Malachy and Steph dearly in Los Angeles, but I’m thrilled that they will be such a gift to the students they teach in NY. When you train at a great gym with great, dedicated instructors, you take many lessons with you, meet the best people, and become part of an indispensable community. Malachy and Steph are generous and empathetic human beings and are a huge asset to the Kingston community. They cultivate a fun, safe, and challenging environment where everyone can excel and be better. They pour so much of themselves into the gym and their students and really inspire us to invest in ourselves and our training partners. Trust in them and in the process and know that you’re getting the best training and the best allies in your corner. They’re also both absolute beasts on the mat!

Malachy is an incredible coach. His teaching is high level and he can break down techniques for anyone to understand. If you’re a jiu jitsu athlete that wants to compete, or a parent looking to get your child in a martial art, this gym is right for you.

I’ve had the pleasure of training with Midtown Jiu Jitsu owner Malachy for almost 7 years. I can unequivocally recommend this gym and the high level of instruction you’ll receive whether you’re looking for a place for yourself, your kids or the whole family. Maybe you’ve never trained or perhaps you’re an experienced competitor- either way this is THE gym for you.

Highly recommend training here. I've had the pleasure of training with the head coach here, Malachy, for quite some time. He works extremely hard and cares a great deal for his students and makes sure that they are taught high level technique. He also continually strives to learn more and stay up to date and how modern jiu jitsu is evolving which, believe it or not, should be a lot more common but it is not. I can't recommend training with coach Malachy enough. You'll train in a safe environment and if you're looking for hard training rounds that push you and make you better, you're in the right place.

Coach Malachy was my most recent, and all-time favorite jiujitsu instructor. He is one of the most passionate, skilled, hard-working, and devoted instructors I’ve ever come across. I cannot recommend taking classes with him highly enough.
