Great gym. Clean, coach teaches well and makes sure you are drilling the basics. Students also respect when rolling for those who need to 'go light'!
I did a drop in here while visiting my sister in New York. I was only able to come for the drilling class, but the head instructor Alex was very welcome and accommodating and made me feel right at home. The level of technique was high with lots of detailed corrections and the gym is clean and very friendly. Will definitely be coming back.
This place saved me when I needed to find another academy closer to where I work. Alex is super welcoming and very kind. Everyone here has been very supportive and helpful. A big family where everyone is looking out for the well being of the other and support each other.
One of the best BJJ/grappling gyms I have ever trained at. People are super nice, strong and knowledgeable, location is easy to find, the space is perfect for practicing. I fully recommend it to anyone who trains in BJJ/grappling.
World class coaching, wonderful people and very open to beginners. Would recommend.
One of the best jiu jitsu academies I’ve trained at in NYC. Knowledgeable and experienced instructors (shoutout to Alex and Pabs especially), welcoming and courteous teammates, the vibes are just great here. If you have the opportunity to train here, whether it be long-term or if you’re just dropping in, rest assured that you’ll have a positive experience at Masterskya
It's a fantastic place to train! All the instructors are very knowledgeable, especially Coach Pabs Carela!
walking into Masterskya BJJ was one of the best decisions I've ever made. As someone who was looking for a new challenge, a way to improve my physical and mental health, and a sense of community, I found all of that and so much more at Masterskya. From the moment I stepped onto the mat, I was greeted with warmth, kindness, and a sense of belonging. The instructors, staff, and fellow students all shared a passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that was infectious and inspiring. One of the instructors Pabs is a cerebral coach with a slick game and has with Judo and wrestling experience which is a huge plus for me. Since i came from a wrestling background ground. Awesome instructor and will work with you step by step if you were to ever get stuck with a technique. The training itself was top-notch. The instructors were knowledgeable, patient, and skilled at breaking down complex techniques into manageable pieces. They created a safe and supportive environment that allowed me to push myself to new heights, even when I thought I couldn't go any further. Masterskya BJJ is more than just a place to learn martial arts techniques – it's a community, a family. The people I've met and trained with have become some of my closest friends and biggest supporters. We motivate and encourage each other, both on and off the mat, and celebrate each other's successes. Training at Masterskya has not only improved my physical health and skills, but it's also had a profound impact on my mental and emotional well-being. It's taught me discipline, perseverance, and resilience – skills that I've been able to apply to all areas of my life. If you're looking for a place to challenge yourself, to grow, and to find a sense of purpose and belonging, then I highly recommend Masterskya BJJ. It's a journey that will push you to your limits, but also reward you with incredible gains and a sense of accomplishment that's hard to find elsewhere. So, don't be afraid to take the first step and walk onto the mat. You never know where it might lead you. Recommendation: If you're new to BJJ, start with the fundamentals class and be patient with yourself as you learn the basics. Don't be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance from the instructors or more experienced students. And most importantly, have fun and enjoy the journey!
Masterskya is an incredible gym that will teach you high quality jiu jitsu. Pabs, Alex, Dave, Jontae, Oliver and Mikey are all absolutely incredible instructors who create a safe, friendly environment for students to learn and grow. Their teaching is fantastic, and the community here is very friendly and welcoming as well! Come train here if you’re in the area!
had a great experience at the corporate bjj networking event they threw, thank you guys great rolls
Wonderful training partners at a great location. Cleanliness is a priority here as the mats are very clean and flip flops are enforced. Highly recommend!
Whenever I come to NYC to visit family or for work, I will drop in to train at Masterskya. Alex is such a great instructor and a leader, who has built a special community. I highly recommend training here or dropping in if you are a visitor.
Great space. Very clean. Two showers and a spacious changing area.
The vibes at Masterskya are great. Definitely stop in if you’re looking for competitive rolls with friendly people.
Great place for beginners and experienced players! Everyone is friendly, and the instructors are high level. Always a great time at Masterskya!
Amazing training and coaching. Prof. Alex is a great teacher and technician. He is incredibly gifted and the room is very welcoming with training partners for all levels.
Great place with amazing people! Great coaches Alex, Super Dave, Pablo. Recommend
If I ever move to New York, this would definitely be my home gym. I've visited many New York gyms (from the most prestigious to single local gyms) and I find myself returning to this one. Super friendly, and very welcoming. As a woman who's traveling and training, those two things are very much needed. The instructor provides very detailed demonstration and keeps an eye out during drill AND open mat to give further instructions and tips for improvements. I highly recommend this gym.
Well structured class with great training partners. Friendly and welcoming.
What a great room. Very technical instruction, leaving a lot of open ended room to ask questions and for people to express themselves. Alex went out of his way to be welcoming and making sure I had fun, safe rounds. His students are legit — everyone practices technical jiu jitsu. Just a super positive vibe full of curious creative and cool people
Had a great time dropping in and training with Coach Alex and the team. Looking forward to coming back soon!
Visited from Toronto and these guys welcomed me with open arms. They let me drop in for training and really made me feel like family. Can’t recommend them highly enough!
I visited NYC for 2 weeks and trained here 4 times. I don't think I ever learned more from a stretch of 4 training sessions. Excellent gym and community and I definitely hope to be back when I'm in the area.
Great gym! Alex and coaches are friendly and great at teaching BJJ. Positive culture and safe training environment for beginners and experienced grapplers!
Amazing gym with amazing instructors! The vibe in the room is amazing as everyone is super helpful!
extremely knowledgeable coaches and an overall welcoming environment
Masterskya is an exceptional BJJ gym in NYC. I’ve been training at Masterskya for a year and a couple months and Alex, the founder of Masterskya, has done a stellar job at creating a training environment suitable for everyone - from high level competitors to someone starting their jiujitsu journey. The classes are set up in a way where each individual has the opportunity to develop their own game by having 5 mins allotted for drilling techniques with your partner, followed by technically sound lessons from specific positions. Each month has a specific theme or position and it is advanced technically as the month goes on. Everyone is super respectful and considerate of any injuries or sparring requests. You will feel a strong sense of community as soon as you step through the door. Training at Masterskya is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my jiujitsu journey, so if you’re thinking about giving it a try, I’m confident you won’t regret it.
Stumbled upon this place while visiting NYC. Alex (owner) was extremely welcoming as well as the other members. Great athletes and excellent teaching. Will be my go to spot when in NYC.
Incredible gym! Very high level training while simultaneously being super friendly and approachable for all students! Alex has fostered a great sense of community at Masterskya!
I started to training here at Masterskya about 8 years ago. Great for all ages and incredible community! Safe and fun place to learn
5* A+ Grappling Gym I've known the head coach/founder, Alex, for several years, and he's a great guy. He clearly cares a lot about his students, and is a high level expert as well as a great coach. I had dropped in a handful of times over the last few years, and always enjoyed the training and environment, so I got myself a full time membership, 4 months ago, to do multiple classes every week, and have been fully satisfied with my decision. The class structure is great. They start on time (so get there a bit early, to get ready), don't waste valuable class time on filler warmups, allocate time for students to drill what they are personally working on, run through high percentage techniques (I actually use pretty much everything that we are taught, in my day-to-day game), and then get into several live rounds (you can opt to roll in a light, medium, or hard section). All of the instructors I have met have been friendly and highly skilled, and the members are all very chill. Whether you are a new white belt, or a seasoned black belt, you'll fit in, and be able to get some solid training. If you're looking to compete, there is a very strong comp team here, as well, with competitors at all levels. The training schedule is also convenient, with classes multiple times a day, 7 days a week. If you are considering training here, go sign up for a free trial class, and get started. It's definitely worth it. Highly recommended
Alex Sensei creates Masterskya so that everyone can build a place of mutual respect and learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Every time I come back to Masterskya like come back home.
I trained at Masterskya for several years before moving back to CA. I still miss them! And when I visit NYC they are always a must to back to to train. Incredibly knowledgeable coaches that make all people feel welcome. And the class was always so versatile with so many people with varied talents. Great atmosphere, great coaching, great people.
The best academy! Alex has created an amazing atmosphere where everyone feels like one big family. He always goes above & beyond to check up on you when you’re absent. Classes are guided by world class instructors and are packed with knowledge! It’s truly one of the best places to train in the city. Much love & thanks for everything Alex!
Masterskya is a world class gym! Anytime I visit NYC, I am excited to stop by and train. Since day one as a visitor, Alex and Super Dave have always made me feel welcomed and part of the team. Lots of great instruction, training, and fun! Looking forward to training and visiting again
Great coaches and a welcoming community
Alex creates a welcoming atmosphere for everyone to train at. He does his best to accommodate you especially if you’re a visitor or drop in. Classes are taught with clear structure with time for discussion at the end. One of the best places to train in the city.
"The 'Masterskya' jiu-jitsu gym is an awesome club with highly qualified coaches. The space is spacious, there are showers, and coaches Alex and Dave provide a personalized approach for everyone. Highly recommended!"
Amazing gym, friendly and competitive environment. Perfect gym to join if interested in jumping into the competition scene, as they have pro training classes available. It’s a Clean space and very knowledgeable instructors; that help introduce you the sport of grappling, even on the first day you step on the mats! Outstanding gym that offers a strong sense of community located in the heart of New York City.
Dave "Super Dave" Z is one of the greatest martial arts instructors in the tri state area. Earlier this year I traveled overseas to a secret location to battle approximately 100 Estonian ninjas, and managed to walk away victorious. Without Dave's guidance beforehand, I would never have known the moves I used in those terrifying Viking death matches. I owe him my life.
I had an awesome time training at Alex's gym for a few months while in NYC! The gym vibe is chill and Alex, the other instructors, and everyone were very welcoming and friendly Alex is a great teacher/coach who gives detailed instructions with reasoning in a way that is easy to follow and understand, as well as providing feedback during the class/rolls I liked how well-structured the classes were; warmups --> 10mins to practice/drill individual techniques --> learning technique --> live rolling I particularly found the 10mins at the start of the class where you and your training partner are able to practice/drill things you are individually working on to be super helpful as I was able to not only drill but also discuss/problem solve/give&receive feedback regarding certain techniques with my training partner. This was the first time I've been to a gym where they had this and I don't know why all gyms don't do this tbh There is a well organised curriculum being taught so the classes each week are related and details/sequences are added on throughout the week making it easy to really absorb and adopt what is being taught, rather than learning random different techniques each class and forgetting them the next day The live rolling is also divided into different areas of the mat depending on how hard/light you want to go (hard/standup, medium, light) which is thoughtful, especially for those that may have injuries etc The facilities are clean, there's two showers, two restrooms, two changing rooms, and it's up on the 2nd floor so if you're able to train during the day you get that natural light coming in, which is nice I'm sad to be leaving and will miss this place. I will be defs be coming back here if I'm ever in NYC again. You should defs check this place out if you live in NYC or are just visiting :)
10/10
The best academy in the world! Always good vibes in the classes, great community and high level technique
Masterskya is hands down one of the best BJJ dojo I've trained at! Alex Ecklin has created an incredible environment where everyone feels welcome and supported. The team is fantastic—highly skilled coaches who are dedicated, approachable, and genuinely care about helping you improve. The mat area is always clean, and the positive vibes make every class enjoyable. The skill level and depth of knowledge across all the coaches are impressive, making this a perfect place for both beginners and experienced practitioners. Overall, a 5/5 experience, and I’d recommend Masterskya to anyone looking to train BJJ seriously in a welcoming community!
I joined training at Masterskya as a guest once in the evening and once at noon. I enjoyed both classes - headcoach Alex and coach Pablo are great! At Masterskya I experienced a high level of technicality, while at the same time there is a high level of mutual care and awareness in the space - It feels like this crowd here knows, that pure musclestrength doesn’t make you a good bjj-athlete and practices accordingly. Thanks for having me - it was a big pleasure and I can’t wait to come back and train again at Masterskya!
Great instructors and wonderful learning environment, with supportive students for those newer to BJJ
Large mat space, friendly training partners and extremely welcoming of myself coming in for a one off class. Alex made me feel at home. Good shower setup. 👍🏼👍🏼
Great gym, great vibes. Alex is the man, you’ll be in good hands at Masterskya!
I highly recommend this gym for anyone living in or visiting the NYC area. I dropped into the Monday 5pm Fundamentals Class. Excellent instruction from Professor Alex, who was engaging with his instruction and very welcoming to us visitors(there was one other drop-in present). The students were all friendly and, more importantly, were very safe and respectful while rolling. 10/10 for facility, environment, instruction and vibe. Will absolutely be coming back the next time I'm in the city.
Alex created a positive and welcoming environment with amazing instructors. As a smaller female hobbyist, it was important for me to find a safe place to train without a high risk of injury. I love how all the instructors are respectful and will take their time to help you regardless of your level.
Highly technical instruction with great coaches! The vibe is laid back and inviting, perfect for anyone visiting from out of town!
great place to train and great teachers and mentors,if you want start to practice or just you are visiting new york you must pass for masterkya
Masterskya is an excellent gym with a strong, supportive community. The instruction and class structure are top-notch, and the students strike a balance between being friendly, respectful and competitive. The coaches are truly invested in your progress and push you to improve while recognizing that everyone’s jiu-jitsu journey is unique. They respect and nurture that individuality. Whether you're new or experienced, it's a great place to train and develop your skills.
Amazing BJJ gym. Alex and the rest of the instructors are very high quality and they pay attention to their students; offering pointers and critique of their technique. Highly recommend the school. They also have showers!
Trained for a month while visiting and was actually sad to leave. The coaches are great, the culture is friendly and respectful, the space is clean and the location is easily accessible. Will definitely be back when in the city!
Came to the school almost a year ago. I’ve felt nothing but a warm welcome, intelligent training, & the friendly but serious culture around elevating the room. A place well run by Alex and all other coaches. A great place you can become a professional athlete or a hobbyist. A place that values high level fundamentals with knowledge of the updated tech within high level Jiu Jitsu. Couldn’t be more proud to be part of a school.
Amazing school with very knowledgeable instructors
Dark arts academy except everyone is really nice and the water is cold.
Best place to learn high level bjj in ny. All instructors know what they're doing and know how to teach it to you. 10/10 recommend
I have trained at multiple BJJ gyms in NYC and elsewhere. I can wholeheartedly say that Masterskaya is the best in terms of the balance of very high level technique along with a positive and encouraging training culture. This is a true gem in the combat sports/self-defense world.
Great atmosphere in the gym, with instructors who are warm and attentive to each students’. Great place for beginners as well as for the competitors!
Alex’s instructions were top notch and the gym culture is very respectful and friendly. His students were using technique over aggression and trained hard. The gym is priced more fairly than the big name gyms in NYC as well. The mats were clean and spacious with great window light. I highly recommend it if you’re a combat athlete 👊
Great community and people
This was my favourite gym in NYC. I had the pleasure of visiting a dozen gyms across New York City and Masterskya was the best! Highly recommended for BJJ athletes of any level; the professor was patient and explained things very well. Good for beginners and above.
Fantastic place to train, with top-notch instruction and a friendly atmosphere. I felt right at home immediately, and everyone has been great. Alex and his instructors also pay a lot of attention to injuries and safety, which helps keep these old bones in line.
Masterskya is such an amazing gym. It's a chill and down to earth place to train. You'll get quality mat time with great instruction. If you're looking for a place to train, give Masterkya a chance.
Alex is well spoken, extremely respectful and knowledgeable coach. Alex delivers his instructions clearly and is open for any kind of questions related to BJJ at the end of his class. In addition, Alex implements strict rules in regard to hygiene in his gym, so I was less worried about getting any kind of skin infection. Members are polite and not aggressively compatible, many of them are great to learn from. Five stars out of five and strongest recommendations.
I'm a black belt at Masterskya. I really enjoy training here. One thing I love is that there isn't really a pecking order: a white belt's progress is just as important as a black belts. Anybody can ask anybody else to roll. And the instruction is top notch. The teachers are knowledgeable and engaged. This is not my first jiu jitsu school, but it is my best jiu jitsu school.
The best BJJ school I’ve ever been to! Very friendly coaches and teammates. 0% ego, 100% sportsmanship.
I've been training at Masterskya formally for a little over a year now, but dropped in off and on for quite a while before that and count some of its students among my favorite training partners and people. Alex and the other coaches' style of instruction is measured, no-nonsense, cerebral and applicable. The other students are serious about their training and the level of instruction is among the best I've ever experienced personally. Classes are conducted with drilling as the warm-up, a short move of the day instruction, and then rolling. It's probably the best class format I've ever run across. And if you like to stand up, you'll find a bjj gym with students who aren't afraid to go feet-to-floor with you. Alex is a caring and connected coach and seems to be aware of almost everything happening on the mats while he's teaching. Choosing to join this place was one of the best decisions I've ever made for my training. Drop in and try a class. You won't regret it.
Training always feels like home here. Alex is extremely supportive and welcoming to newcomers so if you’re brand new to Jiu Jitsu I highly recommend. All of the instructors are top notch.
A great place! Plenty of sparring partners, great teachers, and many options available for class times
I don't even know where to start with a review of Masterskya. I've been a martial artist for more than 25 years, and I can say this school and its community are unsurpassed. First of all, Alex, Van, Dave and the rest of the teaching staff are incredible. Extremely skilled, and knowledgeable, generous, kind, humble, and disciplined. There's no one I would rather train under. Through concerted and intentional effort they have also created a community, that's equally positive and supportive, but also inclusive, and free of bullying and ego. They are capable of supporting students with a diversity of backgrounds and of goals, including competition at an international level. I know this review seems over the top, but these people are really the best. I can't recommend trying this school highly enough.
Before leaving for deployment I decided to give masterskya a try and paid for two weeks of training. I t train before work or after.this place hits the mark as a student. The have enough classes to mix gi and nogi throughout the week. The wrestling program was another addition to what i wanted to sharpen . Im glad they came to open in Chinatown.
Fantastic gym overall. Clean mats, showers, and dressing rooms. Amazing instructors who pay close attention to each and every one of their students.
I’ve been to multiple gyms and nothing captures the atmosphere of Masterskya Jiu Jitsu. The instructors are top notch and really care about their students’ development. Techniques are throughly covered and your training partners are supportive. Dope place to train!
I came into this gym not watching a single BJJ match in my life, but the people, instruction, and convenient schedule at Masterskya pulled me in and now it's something I look forward to every week.
Great place to train, with helpful instructors 👍
Fantastic gym, very friendly and knowledgeable group of people
Great gym and instructors
Great vibes and great training.
A fantastic place to become better in BJJ. The coaches are high level but also super friendly. They like to make fun, which is super important for me to create a smooth environment, where you like to spent time. Mastersexample for how a fighting gym should look like. Thank you so much for having!
Amazing people and world class coaching! This is the place to train Jiu Jitsu in NYC!
Masterskya is a gym with an amazing vibe and excellent coaches. The location is incredibly convenient too. Highly recommended!
The best place to start getting acquainted with the art of jiu-jitsu... the concentration of the best people in this gym is off the charts, I have no doubt, the best class, convenient schedule, professional coaching, top-notch level, come, you won't regret it 🙌🏻
Masterskya is a gem. Having trained here for over two years, I can’t speak highly enough of Alex, SuperDave and Van, and the kind, safe and friendly environment they are fostering. I brought my female partner and friends to Masterskya and it has become a second home to many of them. There is a place for everyone, whether you want to up your game as a competitor, learn self defense, or just need a really good workout.
From my very first class I felt very welcomed and comfortable. From the coaches to the students, I’ve had an amazing experience which encourages me to show up every week. Alex asked if it was my first time practicing and made sure another coach (Jontae) showed me the basics before joining the class. As a woman I was very scared to join a new gym but everyone has been absolutely amazing. The other students always make me feel included and are super patient. Overall an amazing experience. I encourage you check it out, and if you’re a woman, I guarantee you will feel comfortable and welcomed at Masterskya.
Joined here a couple months ago after moving to NYC from California and love the atmosphere and the training. Top notch gym with a friendly crowd and great instructions. Super clean too. Also many options for classes morning lunch and evening so it helped me a ton on a busy schedule.
Top tier instruction from all coaches. Would recommend anyone to train here regardless of experience level. Also wrestling coach is ex D1
Got a serious skin infection from this gym after going once. Been treating it for 3 weeks and still ongoing.
