I just did an intro class here, I have been contemplating trying out BJJ for a couple of years. I'm a student of a different martial art, but Jiu-Jitsu is a whole different ball of wax. I came to observe a class recently at this school, and was very impressed. There's an excellent vibe here, competitive but friendly, all of the senior students and instructors are very helpful. Professor Mattos is very personable and good to his students. In other arts, I have been a student on and off for most of my life, and I can always tell when I see a good instructor. It's highly likely that I will start going here soon, the intro class was great. I worked with a very helpful student, and the whole experience was very positive. As with anything else, I suggest you shop around to find what is right for you, but don't be surprised if you end up back here. As an added bonus, the front desk dog Rio is great. I must remember to bring treats next time!

Great BJJ gym just outside Carlisle Barracks. Professor Mattos is an outstanding instructor of Brazilian jiujitsu who cares deeply about his students. He and his team made me feel like part of the family during my short 3 month stay in the area. The gym also has a large number of skilled students who can help push advanced practitioners to the next level. I learned a lot in that limited amount of time. Given the welcoming environment and the emphasis on safe (but effective) learning, this would be a great place to start BJJ for those who have never tried it before. I highly recommend.

I joined this gym in January of 2020. As a college student, it gives me something to look forward to get my mind off school work. I only went 2-3 times a week when I first started. Almost after a year in, I now go 7-9 times a week. I have met some great friends here. Everyone pushes you to be the best you can. I started BJJ here with no prior grappling experience. After only 2 months of training, I have made significant growth in this sport and have increased my confidence and have made significant progress in my mental health. There are multiple training sessions each day, which allows for flexibility in schedules. The coaches and professors here are AWESOME!! They remain very patient with their students, which helps to stay encouraged and excited to learn! Most importantly, they are professionals and have mastered the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and they want to help you learn it, too! Professor Marcelo is great with kids and offers children’s classes in a variety of age groups! The kids love it. This gym is welcoming and the people who train here truly become family. The gym is very clean, so there is no need to fear unsanitary mats! I am a 20 year old college student and plan to stay close to the area just to continue training under Professor Marcelo. I can’t recommend this BJJ gym enough. Sign up for BJJ at this gym and watch yourself grow physically and mentally!

My son is experienced for age, having trained for six years and my daughter is a beginner, but each are getting just what they need from the instructors to improve. The team at Tiger Shark is professional, experts in BJJ technique and provide a positive learning environment. Professor Marcelo is exceptionally knowledgeable, yet patient and very encouraging while coaching the kids. I’m impressed that the black belt instructor teaches BJJ technique for every class, even the young kids. Finding Tiger Shark BJJ was one of the best things about moving to this area.

Perfect transition for those who wrestled before and want to try a different form of grappling. Very welcoming people, and amazing instructors. Professor Marcelo Mattos does not only have an awesome reputation and career in BJJ, but is also a great teacher, who makes things clear and simple. I love learning under the professor because he knows how to have a good time and have fun, but also keep a level of intensity. The people that attend the school are also as equally great. Everyone is very welcoming and very supportive of one another. Higher belts enjoy helping lower belts, so there’s never this feeling of being bullied on or being secluded because you’re the new person type thing. People love seeing new faces in the gym. I’d recommend Tiger Shark BJJ to anyone who was looking to practice a martial art in the area, not only because you’d be training in the best martial art in the world, but because you’ll also be learning it with just as equally committed people, learning from an amazing coaching staff, and Training in the best martial arts gym in the area. I have been training with the TigerShark BJJ team since September. I was seeking something new and physically demanding. In addition to the great exercise, this gym has a great team atmosphere that is lead by an experienced instructor. What is more impressive is their kids classes. My kids do not participate (yet) but having youth coaching experience in other sports, Professor is among the very best that I have seen. Fantastic instruction/coaching with supreme control of the class, which any parent can and will appreciate. If BJJ is not your thing, check out their Kickboxing classes for a different experience. I highly recommend this gym for all ages.

I have been training at Tiger Shark BJJ/Carlson Gracie for over 7 years now. My son started when he was 4, my daughters each started at 3 (I think the one might have even been 2!). Training with Marcelo has been THE best decision I've made in a long career in wrestling/martial arts. The atmosphere at the gym is competitive but safe for adults, a great place to learn technique but also be pushed physically. For kids, their mental and physical development has been beyond what I could have imagined. Mine have learned respect, competition readiness, a sense of accomplishment, and world class submission skills, to name a few. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Professor Marcelo or this gym to ANYONE! If you live in the are and want to train, GET IN THE GYM!!

Tiger Shark is such a welcoming, encouraging gym to belong to. My husband and oldest daughter have been training here for a little over a year and it was their enthusiasm and enjoyment for their classes that made me want to join classes as well. I started kickboxing this past January and absolutely love it. Professor Marcelo is very patient and tough in the best way and makes me want to be better with the pride he has in his students. In April, I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes and have loved every moment of it. I was never good at sports and this art has made me feel so much stronger and confident in myself, with the encouragement of Professor and all of the coaches here. I have had the privilege of traveling a nearly two decade long BJJ journey and Professor Marcelo is a highlight within that journey. I was fortunate to train in several excellent schools in North Carolina, Florida, Maryland, Alabama, and Tennessee and visited numerous schools overseas. I also trained within several military clubs and programs, participated in several MMA training sessions with Greg Jackson, and attended training seminars conducted by Royce Gracie, Ricardo De La Riva, and Kurt Osiander among others. After a year of training with Professor Marcelo, I have no hesitation describing his gym as every bit the equal of any I have attended and his detailed understanding of BJJ and his ability to teach it rivals any I have seen. A truly great school with great students and an excellent atmosphere.

It was an amazing surprise to find out the gym in Carlisle area! My son was just 3 at the time and I really thank Marcelo and all the staff for presenting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to my kid. He trained there for 1 year and it was very pleasant to be part of Tiger Shark family. Today we don’t live in the city anymore, but my son still loves the sport, mostly because of his former coaches and friends in Central PA. Really recommend to enroll the kids at BJJ classes there.

This gym has something for everyone. The youth programs are strong and teach kids character building skills in addition to technique. Adults looking for an alternative way to exercise, learn new skills, or simply feel more confident, kickboxing is the way to go. Professor Marcelo will push you to your limits and you will have fun in the process. For those a little more serious about martial arts, training jiu jitsu fits the bill. I've been training for many years, at many gyms including gyms in California, Hawaii, Utah, and Virginia. I've enjoyed all of the gyms I've trained at, but I've enjoyed none more than Marcelo's gym. I've trained here for almost 3 years, as have my 3 children (5, 7, 14), and now we even have my wife training there. I'm not a novelty in this respect. Many of my training partners have their children training at the gym. It's more of a family atmosphere than any gym I've been at. I'll be moving again soon, but I'll deeply miss training with Marcelo and all my friends with the Carlson Gracie Team!

At first my husband and I just wanted a place for our son to learn self-confidence, patience and respect, but a year later I am now attending school there! Kickboxing is great for cardio, balance and skill. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is great for everything else in life! It really is life-changing. I have found a second family here and I am learning how to defend myself and become more confident. Professor Marcelo Mattos is professional, caring and knowledgeable. The gym is very clean, the classes start and end exactly as they are scheduled, the students and staff are very welcoming, and classes are run very professionally and with great structure.
