I have trained in Martial Arts for most of my life at many schools and both me and my son have trained at Manchester Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu off and on for well over a decade. I can say hands down this is the best facility to train at regardless of your goals. This is a professionally run, hygienic school, that offers a remarkable breadth of expertise, and class availability. The instructors are top notch both on and off the mats. More importantly, there is a strong sense of community and a welcoming environment for new comers, both child and adult. All in all, I cannot recommend this school enough.
Posted 1 year agoManchester BJJ is a great friend and family Jiu jitsu and mma gym for anyone who wants to learn the gentle art from great instructors. The environment is awesome for all ages and anyone who wants to train or compete. I Love the gym and the staff as well as the students hands down the best gym in the CT.
Posted 1 year agoManchester BJJ is a great facility that thrives on respect, discipline, diversity and learning. The instructors are all great and quick to help. They are very welcoming to visitors to come train or answer any questions. The owner and Black Belt Instructor Rob Magao is very professional and extremely knowledgeable. His knowledge is trusted as he shares his experiences from a competitive perspective all the way to his real life applications. Manchester BJJ is a great place for kids and adults at any rank or experience level.
Posted 1 year agoManchester BJJ is an amazing place to begin your Jiu Jitsu journey I’ve got so many points so I’ll try to condense as to why I believe you should come and be apart of this great and welcoming community! 1.) Range: Within this academy there are so many individuals from the instructors to other students alike that are caring and willing to help anyone whether a seasoned student or someone on their very first day. There’s also people of all walks of life in regard to sex, age, size that are wanting to help you begin. The talent is top notch but, also there’s an immense amount of humility throughout to help any person discover the fun of this activity. 2.) Skill Set/Instructing: What more can I say about the entirety of the instructors here at this academy. Whether you’re a hobbyist, competitor, to MMA fighter, there is an instructor that can curtail to anyone’s unique needs or abilities. The vast amount of knowledge within is immense and the many different programs allow you to truly be “well-rounded” and experience many different art forms. There’s also many opportunities to learn from high-level individuals outside of the academy as there’s many seminars available multiple times a year. 3.) Accommodations/Scheduling: This was definitely a big factor for myself but Manchester BJJ offers a class just about every single day of the week, almost three times a day whether you’re a early bird or night owl you can definitely get some training in. Within this academy they also have significant mat space and spring floors, and are thoroughly hygienic; creating an inviting, safe, and cleanly environment for everyone. 4.) Community: This factor is the most important for me especially within martial arts. Whether I’ve had the best or worst time before class, I always feel invigorated and happy after attending. That goes without saying due to the fact that members of this academy are as selfless as it gets sacrificing to ensure others’ progress, mood, achievement, and sense of accomplishment. The members of this academy is what keeps me coming back day after day whilst striving to not only make themselves better but others’ too. Overall, whether you’re starting with no prior experience or have been within the Jiu Jitsu space for a while, I highly recommend Manchester as well as Hebron BJJ as they provide high level instruction and create a fun/safe training environment that will definitely have you coming back!
Posted 1 year agoUnbelievable Jiujitsu talent. Try here first. Clean and welcoming environment.
Great gym, great atmosphere, welcoming and great rolls
Super nice gym with really cool people! Good coaching and different classes for anything you might want to train, gi, no-gi, mma or anything else. They also have kids classes!
This is the best BJJ place! I love the people here. Started a couple of months ago and I'm thoroughly enjoying it! -Artie Sulander
I’ve been apart of this gym for a while and I am very proud to call this gym my home. This gym is kept clean, has great people and very inclusive. There is a place for everyone at Manchester BJJ, whether you are a competitor , hobbyist, or trying to get into shape, Manchester has it all.
One of my favorite places on earth!! The atmosphere and culture are incredible! I can't imagine not having this in my life. The management and instructors care so much about what they do, and it shows profoundly. I wouldn't want to train anywhere else! My son has also been involved for 4 years now. The kids program is spectacular. I honestly can't say enough about my experience here. I look forward to many more years!!!
Can’t recommend enough! Great atmosphere, vibe and energy. Super friendly and helpful instructors in a clean environment. 10/10
I visited Manchester BJJ while i was in town for work. I’m a black belt with about eighteen years experience and i was very impressed by the quality of instruction as well as the caliber and respect of the students
I’ve been training at Manchester Bushido for several months and it has by far been the best gym I have trained at. The atmosphere, teachers, and fellow grapplers always make it a good time and help you learn techniques methodically and with intention. I 110% recommend joining, especially if you’re new to training.
Manchester/Hebron has been an integral part of my personal and professional life. I am deeply grateful to Rob and Rich for their unwavering support and the positive impact they have had on me and my family. Our academy boasts over 20 highly skilled black belts, each with extensive experience and exceptional training backgrounds. We have one of the largest mat areas in the state, equipped with springs for optimal training conditions. Beyond the physical training, I have also formed enduring friendships with many of our members. We welcome anyone interested in joining our academy to come and experience the benefits of our training.
Rob and his son Alex are super knowledgeable in the art of jiu jitsu. As an aspiring police officer they show specific techniques I can use in different situations.
This BJJ gym is truly awesome! The coaches are skilled, attentive, and create a welcoming environment for all experience levels. The classes are well-structured, focusing on both technique and conditioning, while fostering a sense of community among members. My son and I are enjoying every minute of it.
This academy is everything you need in one spot! Came here for the NO GI classes and learned a bunch of great techniques from the Instructors. Great group of people with lots of positive vibes. Can’t wait to come back and visit when I’m back in the area!
Great place to train for all levels. Extremely nice facility. And the instruction is top notch. Highly recommend this place.
My nephew and his dad train here and it has been such a wonderful community for their family. The wonderful coaches have driven my nephew to learn and build his skills and the whole family absolutely loves this place!
My nephew loves Manchester Jiu-Jitsu and the instructors!
Extremely knowledgeable and friendly coaches and staff! Highly recommend
Trained here back in 2019 before joining the Navy and the instructors were very patient and easy to learn from coming from someone with no BJJ experience. During that time it helped train me for bootcamp not just physically but also mentally. Trained at different schools across the U.S. and no other school has beat the expectations this school has set. Planning on training here again when I get back.
Love this place. It has something for everybody. If you are a beginner, you can take fundamentals classes and have your experience catered to that. If you want to pursue professional fights, they have the resources and coaches for that as well. As a former wrestler, I love how much stand up grappling is encouraged. The mats have springs underneath, which makes a huge difference. The coaches and people here are even more enjoyable than the grappling. A great community.
Manchester BJJ is a top-tier academy that I can’t recommend highly enough! The quality of instruction here is truly exceptional. The instructors are not only incredibly knowledgeable and skilled but also deeply committed to each student’s progress. They have a remarkable ability to break down complex techniques into manageable steps, making learning both accessible and enjoyable. The facility itself is impressive—a spacious, well-maintained environment that’s perfect for training. The large mat area and modern equipment provide ample space for everyone to work on their skills without feeling cramped. It’s clear that Manchester BJJ invests in creating a comfortable and professional training space. One of the standout features of Manchester BJJ is the variety of training partners. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced practitioner, you’ll find a range of partners at different belt levels eager to help you improve. The culture here is all about mutual support and teamwork. Everyone genuinely wants to see each other succeed, which creates a positive and motivating atmosphere. Overall, Manchester BJJ offers a fantastic blend of top-notch instruction, a state-of-the-art facility, and a supportive training community. If you’re looking for an academy where you can grow and thrive in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, this is the place to be.
Really solid gym with a good community and a great group of guys not much more can be said
As a new member of the Law Enforcement Brotherhood, I met Rob Magao through the Officer Survival Series. I really appreciate what Rob and the OSS team are doing to help Law Enforcement Officers. He invited me to teach a seminar at his school, where I had a great time. I’ve been in many schools all over the world in my professional fighter carrear, and I can say Manchester Bushido BJJ is a world class school. Such a good environment, the people are very welcoming and respectful. All the black belts that I meet at the seminar were hi level and skilled. Really looking forward to return to visit again. I highly recommend anyone who is looking forward to start training Martial Arts or already been training to join my friend Rob’s School at Manchester, CT.
I have had the pleasure of training at Manchester BJJ aka Bushido multiple times and with the owner/head instructor Rob Magao on multiple other occasions. His knowledge of the art is unparalleled and his instruction is as well. It’s rare to find an instructor who is as well versed in all aspects of the art from sport to self-defense to applications for law enforcement professionals. The lineage of the school is amazing and it’s a culture that permeates through to the students as well. The way they treat visitors is top tier! The facility is spacious and clean. I travel over two hours each way when I visit and if I were closer I would visit more often! Great school, if you’re in the area and looking for an academy, look no further in my opinion!
Very welcoming atmosphere. Knowledgeable, dedicated and encouraging instructors. Several options for training for anyone’s schedule with consistent morning and night classes. Great mix of Gi, No Gi and striking. It’s amazing what you can learn in a year!
Rob, the coaches and team members at Manchester BJJ gave me the tools to achieve goals in and out of the academy that I didn't think where possible. The training is challenging and rewarding. My 7 year old has trained in the Little Samurai program since he turned 5. He learns Jiu- Jitsu while gaining humility, confidence and respect. In addition, my wife who also trained at the gym has made some incredible friends. Overall the community at Bushido is supportive, welcoming and strong.
Manchester Brazilian Jiu Jitsu provides an incredible experience! The instructor, Rob Magao is truly amazing, bringing a wealth of knowledge, passion, and patience to every class. The staff is equally outstanding, always friendly and eager to help. What sets this school apart is the supportive and welcoming environment created by the students. From day one, I felt like part of the family. Everyone, regardless of skill level, is encouraging and willing to assist each other in improving. The facility itself is top-notch—clean, spacious, and well-maintained. The atmosphere is perfect for learning and training. If you're looking for a place to start or continue your jiu jitsu journey, I can't recommend Manchester Brazilian Jiu Jitsu School highly enough!
If you’re interested in learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Manchester Bushido BJJ is unequivocally one of the premier locations to do so. One of the biggest differences that sets Manchester Bushido BJJ apart from others is the emphasis placed on higher learning. This is not your typical gym environment that offers BJJ classes in conjunction with other services. This is an Academy, and it is a place of higher learning specifically for those individuals interested in pursuing what it means to train in the way of Bushido; “the way of the samurai.” To know how to physically perform technique is one thing; it is entirely different to conceptually understanding why these techniques work in the first place. Manchester Bushido BJJ will help you to accomplish both. Come train!
This academy provides a safe and welcoming environment. From the first day I joined everyone has been awesome. They have several black belts , so there is never a lack of knowledge when you have questions. Almost 4years later, I’m still excited to go in for classes. Highly recommend you check them out.
I’ve had the pleasure of training at Manchester BJJ for a couple months now, and it has been an incredible experience. The instructors are highly skilled, passionate, and always willing to help each student improve. The gym has a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, making it a great place for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. The facility is clean and well-maintained, with ample space for training. The class schedule is flexible, offering a variety of times to accommodate different lifestyles. I particularly appreciate the emphasis on both technique and physical conditioning, ensuring a well-rounded training experience. What sets Manchester BJJ apart is the strong sense of community. Everyone here supports each other, fostering a positive and motivating environment. If you’re looking to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Manchester, this is the place to be. Highly recommended! Rob and Team are fantastic!
I trained at Bushido BJJ (Manchester) for 2.5 years. I moved to NH and after having experienced a few different academies, here are a few reasons why someone searching for an academy should strongly consider Bushido BJJ Manch/Hebron: 1. The instruction quality and the experience to back it up. There are numerous blackbelts all with different styles, and theres even womens classes. The coaches are right on the mats with you. They are all tried and true and earned their status the hard way. In fact, all belts in this academy earn them the hard way. It is NOT a belt factory. 2. The mats themselves are on springs and super safe to land on. Stand up work and takedowns can be trained regularly and with confidence. 3. The team itself is like a family, regardless if you are a hobbiest, like myself, or want to compete. The coaches there will help you push past boundaries and plateaus no matter what your goal is. 4. The classes are plentiful and mixed ages, races, sex and skill type. You instantly get exposed to all different backgrounds. Respect to teammates and the dojo itself is A+. 5. One more plus is the talent that comes through to give seminars. There is a large amount of effort to ensure big names in BJJ, including the team namesake himself, Pedro Sauer, does seminars. I can't say enough. This place has it all. I strongly recommend it. Kurt R
Professor Rob is a top notch instructor who delivers for all his students. I’ve had the privilege of training with him and he is extremely professional and credible in teaching his craft. Quality training!
Bushido is an amazing martial arts academy. The primary art is Brazilian Jiujitsu. However there is also a regularly schedule MMA class. The cadre of very talented instructors, bring expert teaching of Brazilian Jiujitsu, Wrestling, Judo, and Self Defense. The extensive class schedule at both the Manchester and Hebron academies gives adults, children, and families the opportunity to train at a variety of times to meet their schedules, and as often as needed to meet their needs. I’ve trained with both professional and amateur fighters, to include UFC fighters at Bushido. There are many who train to compete in both Jiujitsu and MMA. There are also many who train to learn the arts and stay healthy in body and mind. With that said, the diverse class schedule accommodates whatever your need may be. Finally and most importantly the culture at Bushido is one that has brought much love, happiness and learning to myself and my family.
What truly distinguishes this gym is its vibrant sense of community. The camaraderie among fellow students is great; everyone is friendly and eager to lend a helping hand. This nurturing atmosphere fosters a family-like environment where each member is committed to supporting one another’s growth. Additionally, the curriculum is thoughtfully designed, striking a perfect balance between self-defense and the competitive aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).
I train here along with my 2 youngest boys (10 and 8) and the atmosphere and instructors are fantastic. I have trained many different forms of martial arts throughout my life at several schools and have enjoyed BJJ the most. The owners, managers and coaches are what makes the experience special and all of the other students are a great variety to roll and train with.
Professor Rob Magao is world class! He is recognized as a very high level instructor and has put together a renown program for LEOs and supporters. There is no doubt this is the place to train if you’re in the area.
The best place around. Extremely knowledgeable, welcoming, professional, and CLEAN academy. Team atmosphere. A second home for students.
Amazing group of instructors (and students) at MBJJ.
I started out taking my younger son at 10 years old. The coaches at both academies were outstanding with his development. I saw strides in his confidence and abilities to maintain control in adverse situations. Seeing his growth after two years I decided to motivate my reluctant to get injured, 54 year old self to join the fundamentals class. It’s been a few months and I’m glad I joined. If you think you are too old, too small, whatever, come in and give it a try as the team is outstanding.
Rob's training and the school atmosphere are awesome. As a lower level blue belt I was always welcomed, and the training was top notch. I saw immediately that Rob builds his school around a great group of high level guys that tought me and everyone there a lot. Rob is the man.
I have personally known Rob Magao for several years and have the opportunity to teach with him. Rob runs a gym that teaches Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the highest levels for both sport and combative applications. As a gym owner myself, Rob is a world class instructor and his gym is world class as well.
My husband and I have been training at this academy for almost 5 years now. Not only have we had an incredible experience but we have gained a new family as well. At first I was a little apprehensive being a female in a male dominant environment but I have been shown nothing but respect and camaraderie. Everyone who steps through the door is treated as an equal if you’re willing to put in the work. I love this gym.
One year ago I officially joined Manchester BJJ. With almost 20 years of jiujitsu training I needed a change. The culture in Manchester is one of respect, camaraderie and support. I was welcomed as family on the mats and I have made some amazing friendships in a short time. Everyone has their own journey and their own goals. Manchester has something for everyone. My love for training has been renewed and I hope to help others along in their journey
The most comprehensive and reputable martial arts academy in the state. Top tier instructors and even better friends!
Great academy. Top level instruction. The culture is amazing. This is the best school in CT. Fully developed curriculum based on Gracie Jiu Jitsu. If you want to learn self defense or learn jiu jitsu or get in great shape Bushido is the place you have to try. They have great equipment the coaches are outstanding. The academy is clean and they have a great kids program and beginner program. This is the place to train! Go check it out.
I’m from Maryland and stopped in to train while in CT for a week. Everyone was welcoming and Rob was very gracious. It was a great training environment. Everyone I rolled with was super capable but also humble with egos in check. It was a great experience and I recommend to anyone in the area looking for a place to train.
Really cool place. I train in NJ, I was in town for work and coordinated a drop in. Extremely welcoming crew there. Very big space. Kyle the instructor for the day was very effective and thorough. We went through some handfighting drills with collar ties, then drilled some standing body locks and foot sweeps, then transitioned to straight ankle lock variations, ending with a Tye Ruotolo inspired slick knee bar from defending a straight ankle variation. Had some fun rolls with some great people. Would definitely go back when I get a chance.
Gym is clean and well maintained. The instructors are all top notch. Even at the busiest classes they take the time to explain techniques and make sure I’m learning them the right way. Getting myself out of my comfort zone and joining an bjj/mma gym was intimidating as hell. Everyone from students to teachers have made me feel like family since day one. My one regret is that I didn’t start sooner. If you’re considering starting bjj or have been around for a while and are looking for a new gym, this is the place to be.
Great culture with growth minded practitioners fostering community building and engagement. Rob Magao is a phenomenal leader paving the way for generations to come.
Manchester BJJ is a great place for people looking to challenge their body and mind. It's a sport and character development all in one. I would recommend it to fellow women looking to try out a self defense/ combat sport.
Amazing school with a ton of options for classes and coaches multiple times a day. They have a awesome staff and community wiling to sacrifice for their students and invested in helping others constantly improve. Incredibly happy to be a part of it both here and at the sister school in Hebron!
I joined the Academy about 4 years ago when I started taking the Striking/ MMA classes. The instructors are wonderful! They make the class both fun and challenging. The school also has a great culture, you don’t get a sense of ego or an overemphasis on hierarchy. People have a general respect for one another and are there to train and have fun. I absolutely love this place and coming to class has often been the highlight of my week :)
Large range of skill. So many seasoned martial arts members and coaches. Very professional. Dynamic classes. Overall great experience training at Manchester bjj
We are beyond blessed to be apart of this jiu-jistu community, the coaches are amazing, they have adult and kid classes. There are two different locations Manchester and Hebron that you can train. My teenager and my husband love both academies. I wish i could rate them a 10 because that's what they deserve. We have been apart of BJJ for a 11years and they have taught my son discipline and respect through the sport. Very grateful Lu
I have been training at manchester bjj for a little over a year. Instruction is second to none! The amount of knowledge the instructors are able to share and teach that benefits all type of people. The manchester bjj family has quickly grown into my second family and everyone has quickly become friends for life! If anyone in the greater hartford area is looking to learn this martial art, my only answer to them is to go to manchester bjj.
Did a drop in today. What a great place. Good instructors, like minded people, great mats. Most importantly great Jiujitsu. Anytime I am in town this will be my go to spot.
Travelling and dropped in for a Monday class. Welcomed from the first contact by Prof Rob and treated like family. Rich taught the class on open and X guard sweeps and the support and instructions were top notch. I left with more friends and more moves to practice. So glad I stopped by this incredible training gym. Can’t wait to be back.
Son takes classes here. Well run Organization. Coach’s make you work and also make it fun. Definitely recommend
Bushido has 9 black belt instructors and several Brown and Purple belts as well! All of them top notch! It's a school that's based of self defense Jiu-Jitsu not just sport! The school is very much a family. They offer a great kids program as well! The BMA/Striking program is great too! The mat space is huge on a springboard floor! Many other arts are incorporated in their program such as Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, Judo and Wrestling. If you are Law Enforcement or Military like I am then this is the school for you, as there are multiple Officer Survival Series instructors.
I have been here for 2 days and I fell in loved with BJJ, the service is the best quality, everyone is so so so nice and the trainers are the best at teaching jujitsu I loved it so much 2 day I signed up, the instructors are well trained and ya I love it
I found them on Groupon and they was offering the best deal for a month it was for $25 or $30 and that was very reasonable seeing that my daughter wastrying it gor a month. And during that month of class my daughter learn so much I had to apply for the yr. Now she is a grey and white belt and it was all because of there great coaches and effort they pour into there lesson each wk. And they do on amazing job complimenting these kids when they do good and work hard. My daughter as a fav coach & he told them "Nothing is given its earn" and my daughter took that phrase to heart and she work super hard every class, cuz she wont get a stripe if she dont work hard so she kill it everytime she step on that mat. And its all because of Coach J inspiring my daughter I know she will always look back on that day and that phrase for the rest of her life. And I like that alot. Just being in this school it boost the kids self esteem and they treat u like fam all the coaches know every child names and they know there parents and they work with very child and parent and that's what you want when u sign ur child up for any program the security and knowing ur child will feel safe and comfortable and want to go to class. And this school as it all. Try this school and there price is always reasonable. I'm a happy customer and parent, Thx u guys and all the coaches.
The best bjj studio I've ever been to! Ran by true professionals who care about the art and their students. Wouldn't go anywhere else!
I was traveling for work and requested to attend a class. I talked to Rich, and he was extremely friendly and invited me to join their training session. The facility is very clean, the people are very friendly, and the instructors share a lot of details within the techniques. I would certainly recommend this academy, and if I am ever back in the area, I would definitely go back.
I had been interested in doing Ju jitsu for a while, but was to nervous to start. Finally I did and someone who used to go to this school directed me to go to Manchester BJJ. Since going I feel part of a great community of people. Self defense wise I feel far more confident than I had in my whole life, and all the instructors here are not only highly knowledgeable but also extremely friendly and willing to always go the extra distance to help out a fellow brother or sister! Would recommend to anyone!
Great people and facility! the instructors are very knowledgeable, friendly, and take their time to help new students just as much as more advanced students.
I’ve got a great friend that started training here as a white belt. Been fortunate enough to visit a number of times and have to say they do it right. Seems as through white belts work on stuff they need to learn while upper belts train more advanced topics. They’ve got a great team teaching classes, awesome mat space, good fans for summer and all and all just a very inviting atmosphere. If you’re looking to start bjj or a seasoned vet you’ll have a lot of fun.
In 2016 I was gifted a Groupon by my girlfriend who was sick of hearing me really annoy her with my constant talking about how badly i want to train Jiu Jitsu. I was an avid fan of grappling/mma but didnt know where or how to start. The Groupon sat for a month haunting me, knowing if I didn't use it it would be a waste of my girlfriend's money and gift. So following a month of psyching myself up/watching more than a weeks worth of "what to expect as a white belt" videos online and researching the school I was nervous about it but I finally went to talk to someone at the school. I was greeted by professor Rob Magao and was more than pleasantly surprised with his excitement that I would be training. He gave me a tour and explained what happens during class etc. Rob told me to come back at 5:45 for the 6 o'clock fundamentals class. Upon arrival I sheepishly walked in and looked through the window not sure if I should enter the mat area. Coach Buddy Delp saw me looking like a lost child and waved me in, he embraced me with open arms and fit me for my first gi. I did the first class and was blown away with how much I didnt know about grappling/self defense. I met Coach Jay Gonzalez that night as well and he was an unbelievable coach but above all else he was a great guy who made me feel comfortable and excited to learn the techniques. Fast forward 2 years later and I'm now a full fledged grappling addict. The 1.5 years it took to go through the fundamentals was amazing, through the instruction of Rich Mckeegan, Tom Hanson, Ian Bencke, Buddy Delp, Jayson Smyth, Jay Gonzalez, Jerry Lashway, John Parsons, Mike Rossi and Gerry Navarra (imho sign of a great school is so many amazing instructors) I fully grasped the self defense curriculum and was ready to test for the next belt. In June of 2019 I tested for my blue belt and words cant describe the feeling of being able to perform the techniques for your instructors as they call them out. The blood the sweat and tears (figuritively) I left on those mats made me feel like I finally belong somewhere without a doubt. You earn everything through hard work and showing up with a good attitude, nothing is given to you here at MBJJ. I cant say enough good things about my journey at MBJJ, when youre on the mat literally nothing else matters only being present and that to me is the closest thing to a spiritual experience possible. If anybody is questioning whether or not to join a Brazilian jiu jitsu gym because you're worried about not being in good enough shape, anxiety, not being accepted all I can say trust this anxious, out of shape insecure guy to let you know MBJJ is the place for you. Their is nothing better than entering the gym seeing about 30-60 of your closest friends who are ready to help you challenge you and push you to places you didnt know you could go. I have never had anything in my life do more for me period! PLEASE COME CHECK OUT THE GYM!
Manchester BJJ is one of the top BJJ gyms in Connecticut. The instructors are extremely knowledgeable and I am always welcomed as a friend when I visit. I would highly recommend training at Manchester BJJ.
I have been a student at the Academy for 8 years. I love the Academy for several reasons. 1.) Diversity: Whether one is interested in BJJ competition, MMA or self defense, there is something for everyone at the school. 2.) Competent instructors: All the instructors have a well rounded knowledge in martial arts. Each has a unique blend of previous martial arts experience, including Judo, Wrestling, Traditional Karate to name a few. Also Blackbelts Rob Mago and Jimmy Kodzis have invaluable life experience in the Law Enforcement field, both as Officers and Trainers, and real life encounters with violent and sometimes deadly situations. Every instructor at the Dojo, has top notch work ethic and character. They stay current with what is going on in the BJJ world, and train accordingly. 3.) Good training partners: Everyone I train with at the academy is respectful, helpful and a pleasure to train with. Everyone is always willing to help, whether you are preparing for a competition and need to train hard, or are coming off an injury and have to be careful. 4.) Great Facility: The Dojo is big with plenty of mat space. It doesn't hurt that there are professional grade mats, and a spring board floor underneath when your working on your throws. Mats are cleaned and maintained regularly. The academy is easy to get to, located in Manchester not far from I-84, I-384 and Rte. 6. 5.) Great schedule: My work schedule has me working all different hours and different days off. No matter what is going on, I can find a class or open mat to attend whether its morning, nights or weekends. 6.) The overall Quality of people at the school: Probably the most important aspect for me. No matter what is going on, I always feel positive and motivated after a session at Manchester Bushido Academy. Everyone there has great character, push each other to be better, cares about each other's progress and development, and overall are just good people! All my development as a student is directly related to time and effort others have contributed to help me.
Manchester BJJ is an amazing facility. I trained under Rob, the head instructor, for years and I can say that he treats you like family. All of the instructors are top notch who really care about the students. It is a clean gym and a great place to train. I can't recommend them highly enough!
Rob Magao is one of the best instructors I have personally seen teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This martial art is extremely difficult to teach. Some of the best practitioners in the world can not teach it. Rob has the ability to teach and apply which is very rare in this community. As a BJJ instructor when my school moved he was the first guy I called to train with. His students are respectful, well trained, and fun to train with. When my son wants to train bring him here, his kids program is one of the best in the North East. Luis Rosario BJJ Black Belt
Manchester Brazilian Jiu jitsu has been a great place to learn and train jiu jitsu. The environment is one where no matter your goal of self defense, weight loss, training to compete, or overall improvement of physical and mental health Manchester BJJ provides what you need. I am a former runner and going into a jiu jitsu gym was extremely intimidating at first. This group is very welcoming and there’s different skill levels from beginners to very experienced. They treat people here with respect and this place has become literally a second family. I bring my children to learn here and they absolutely love it. My son has went from a shy to an outgoing boy who looks adults right in the eye when he speaks. He is now a little leader in his kids class. He absolutely loves it and wakes up looking to train and have fun. He has learned life skills of respect, discipline and fortitude all while learning self defense. The gym itself and equipment are the fantastic. I would recommend this gym to anyone.
I love training there. They have a huge facility with world class instructors. If you're looking for a great BJJ school, this is the place.
My son and I have been training at Manchester Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for a little over a month now. Our experience has been fantastic. The facility is very clean and well maintained. The instructors and the fellow students in the class have been welcoming and extremely helpful. This is by far the best environment I have trained in. I would highly recommend this school.
Friendly, fun, welcoming and very inclusive. The instructors are great. Facilites are top notch. I couldn’t imagine training anywhere else.
I train in Boston but I visit CT a lot and decided I should find a gym I feel comfortable with and I like here. I did a drop in for open mat on a Saturday morning—everyone introduced themselves and were super welcoming and wanted to roll! Definitely will be back when I visit CT.
I have nothing but good things to say about this BJJ Manchester! Everyone is super welcoming and nice! I did the begginer classes as I’ve never done jui jitsu before, & everyone’s kindness took away the nerves!
The absolute best facility. I've been meaning to leave a review for a while now. This is a serious location with the best instructors.
Such an amazing facility! The instructors are amazing and do everything in their power to help you succeed. They have done wonders for my 10 year olds self confidence and the way he carries himself. Every kid should have such the chance to learn the amazing skills and self confidence that Manchester BJJ has to offer.
I've been training with this team for many years, I trained Judo and BJJ with them since I was 15. I have my black belt in Judo and a blue belt in BJJ and have a comfortable grasp of striking and basic use of weapons. I recently graduated from medical school, got my number 1 choice of residency, and I am in contact for a military position following that. I have been extremely successful thus far, and I attribute a great deal of that to my training with them. BJJ here doesn't just teach you the moves, they teach you perseverance, they teach you honor, honesty and modesty. They train your body, but they hone your willpower, they give you support and they foster an environment of caring. A large part of my personal success is due to training with these guys. I have confidence in myself and my abilities and I know that I can handle myself in my professional career and in a physical arena. It is because of that confidence and the will to press forward to what you want, no matter what obstacles you face, that I am here now. Anyone who trains there will get that. There are very few other places you can get expert training in martial arts and personal development like this one.
Can't wait to be back off orders to start training there again. Great people, great environment. The instructors have great attitudes, knowledge and experience. They have a passion for seeing their students learn and develop.
The short version is...I can't say enough good things about this school. In my 20+ years of experience with several different martial arts and several different schools, I can say with confidence that this is the best school I have ever attended. The main thing that makes this school so great is it's instructors. I've never seen such a collection of instructors who are not only extremely knowledgeable in their craft, but they are all honorable men. From the first day you attend, whether it is for yourself or you are bringing your kids there, they will make you feel right at home. It really is like being a part of a family. I'm happy to have them as role models for my children, as they not only teach self-defense, but they teach, and demonstrate, good character. You will not find any egos, bullies, tough guys, or meat-heads at this school. The teacher-to-student ratio is great, so there is a lot of personal attention given during class due to having many instructors on the mat at a time. The instructors for the kids classes are fantastic. The kids always have a lot of fun, and the instructors are great at encouraging them and instilling discipline and character. Secondly, the facility itself is top notch as well. I've experienced schools that were not professionally run, and the facility was not sanitary at all. This facility is clean, sanitary, and well-kept. If you are looking for a Jiujitsu or MMA class, this is the only school that you should attend. You will not be disappointed.
The team at Manchester Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are some of the best in the industry. If you are looking to start your journey in the martial arts I highly suggest checking the guys out. The School offers a friendly and safe training environment or at students and from what I've seen they go out of their way to take care every individual in the school.
I am a well known black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Bushido Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best. As long as your not a criminal or have bad moral character you will love it here! They get my highest endorsement!
I can't say enough good things about Bushido Jiu Jitsu Academy. Whether you want to have fun while getting in great shape or learn practical safe self defense from highly trained experts, they've got you covered. There are a variety of class times and everyone is really friendly. THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!
I had the privilege to meet Professor Magao over 2 years ago, He honestly helped shape my life, my school, and how I teach. He has been a constant inspiration on what a martial artist and a person should strive to be. The techniques that you will learn at the Bushido Academy are top notch! You wont find a better a better place to train or people to train with. I for one will always consider myself a student of Professor Magao no matter how far away I live.
The Bushido jiu jitsu academy is a top gym. The instructors are good and have a diverse knowledge in many martial arts. The gym has a family feel and a welcoming atmosphere. no egos. come and train
This academy fosters a safe and friendly environment with professional hands on instruction. I have been going to this gym for about 2 years and have loved every moment. There are no big egos and everyone wants to grow to be a better martial artist. Whether you're looking to compete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, or MMA, this is absolutely the best place you could go!
Ive been training here going on 4 years now. My kids have been training for the same amount of time. The instructors are Great both in the adult classes as well as the kids. Great group of students as well. Everyone is always more than willing to help each other and grow as a group. You get a lot of one on one attention and learn from multiple instructors. Rob the owner is a great guy who cares about his students and his instructors as if they were family. Definitely a great place to train and to learn multiple types of self-defense.
I've been training BJJ at Bushido in Manchester for a year, and the community vibe is fantastic, the coaching is great, and the facility is clean, and complete with everything I'm looking for. As a Pedro Sauer affiliate school, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is top-notch, and the personal attention I've received as a student from owner, Rob Magao, is on another level. He truly cares about everyone's unique experiences at Bushido, and seeks feedback frequently to ensure my enjoyment. I highly recommend this gym to anyone.
Bushido BJJ breeds champions! All instructors are well-versed in various martial arts which allows for extremely comprehensive lessons. We learn traditional BJJ techniques adding elements of judo, wrestling and Japanese Juijitsu; preparing students for situations both on and off the mat. As mentioned in other reviews we have multiple black, brown and purple belts which translates into student's success; I have the privilege of rolling with Pan Am, IBJJF and other BJJ competition finalist and medalist. In summary, if you're looking for a place to learn and develop self defense or broaden your skill set, this is definitely the place. Carlos "el guapo" developing blue belt
Bushido Jiu-Jitsu Academy is a grade A martial art academy. The instructors are always professional, helpful, and friendly. The training facility is always kept very clean, as well as offering a family friendly atmosphere. I have never had a poor experience while attending Bushido Academy.
I have been training at the Bushido Jiu Jitsu Academy for eight years now. From the moment that I walked in, the people who train here were welcoming to me. The head instructor, Rob, is not only a highly skilled martial artist in terms of his technique and explanation, but he is also a great person to be around. The facility is always clean and the classes are always run to a high standard. Whether you are just starting out, or you have years of experience, you will always feel welcome and respected at Bushido Jiu Jitsu.
Amazing instruction by very talented instructors. The academy is very well run and extremely clean. Everyone there is friendly and always willing to help. This is a great place to train.
A premier BJJ academy in the Northeast. Extremely knowledgeable instructors who demonstrate and teach technique that benefit every skill level. Very convenient schedule with a wide variety of classes to attend. Everyone at the academy is friendly, helpful, and welcoming, especially to new students and visitors. The environment breeds an unparalleled respect for one another while training. If you're looking for a permanent academy, or just looking for a place to train while traveling, Bushido Jiu-Jitsu Academy is a must!
"Regardless of age, we provide each student with essential training in character development, self-defense, fitness and teamwork, not to mention fun!" According to their website. However, my 5 year old got sassy in class, as 5 year olds do. I made him apologize to coach Matt after class and coach Matt's response to my 5 year old was 'Your sorry is not going to cut it'. Appaling in the area of character development, especially for the humble martial arts. Professor Jay is wonderful but I was told 'It's coach Matt's program'. I would strongly discourage parents of younger children from seeking Manchester or Hebron BJJ.
A gi session purple belt who teaches fundamental class in gym toe hold me once and slam me from my closed guard twice but couldn't pass my guard , black belt said to me thats pretty normal in bjj.
