Family owned build self confidence to kids trusted people teach kids good manners and self defence

When my three year old daughter passed the sign on Indianapolis Boulevard and asked me if she could join, I was hesitant. Perhaps as a child of the 80s, I feared a Cobra Kai sort of dojo. Still, because I was a first-time over indulgent mom, I agreed to call-- sure whoever answered would tell us to wait til she was 5, as specified by the sign. I was shocked when she was invited to try a free class to see how it went. Natalia loved it. Reluctantly, we enrolled her, a bit worried about her safety and the philosophy of the school. The concern was unwarranted. Sensei was the perfect combination of patient and stern, and student safety was always paramount. In addition, Natalia learned so much more than Kempo. Over the years we watched her develop discipline, confidence, coordination and compassion. In the over ten years she was a student, the dojo helped her grow into a young lady with a strong body and a stronger character. When my youngest daughter turned three-- the age Natalia had joined--a frank conversation with Sensei resulted in the decision to postpone her training for a while. Sensei respects and understands that every child develops at a different rate. I can imagine another school welcoming another student in spite of readiness just for tuition dollars. Because the Hestermanns view students as family and not customers, it was important that Lucy not begin before she was able to truly benefit from instruction. When she joined a year later, she thrived. It was something wonderful to see her struggle with something difficult and then experience success. It helped her develop tenacity and confidence. Soon my husband and I joined as students as well. It is not uncommon for families to join. The dojo provides a space ideal for families to learn and grow together. After a while, the dojo becomes part of that family. The dojo is more than just a school. I've watched as the academy have supported people with all sorts of difficulties and losses. I've seen children grow into beautiful young adults. Kempo Jujutsu is truly a gem in the area, shaping their students into strong, compassionate, capable and disciplined young people.

10 years ago I walked in the dojo to enroll my 5 year old son in some classes. As we watched I realized that this is where he needed to be. So a couple months went by and I decided to give it a try and I was hooked! Now I have been an instructor over 8 years and am disciplined in various arts and really enjoy it. The thing I love about the Dojo (my 2nd home ) is that nobody is judged or discriminated against and teachers go out of their way to help anybody. This applies outside of the school.

I started going here a little over ten years ago with some friends because I always wanted to learn martial arts, because I thought it was cool. But I never knew all that I would learn here, I found out that martial arts is way more than just self defense. Yes they teach the best self defense skills, but the teachers here at kempo Jujutsu also teach confidence, leadership, teaching skills, perseverance, hard work, and how to be respectful of authority and to be humble and learn something from everyone and everything in life. And how to win the fight in the inside in the mind with your own self first in order to be able to win the physical fight.

I love this place! I've been going here for more than nine years. We learn about a wide variety of martial skills, from using punches to using throws or weapons and so on. I enjoy seeing the small improvements from each class add up. The teachers and students here are great to work with, and all students can learn at their own speed (which is great for me, since I have balance and coordination problems that most people don't). This is a great place to practice focus and awareness.

I went to a Women's Self-Defense workshop here and it was awesome! The instructor was patient and well-trained, which was especially helpful because I didn't have any prior martial arts experience. The class was thorough and centered women of different ages, abilities, and ranges of motion. I left knowing where I could palm strike someone in a scary situation for maximum impact. I'm definitely going to the next one and bringing my friends!

The instructors at this academy are the best out there. They work hard to instill a strong sense of self worth and confidence in all of their students to help them to not only learn the art of self defense but become more disciplined and goal oriented in their daily lives. They take an active approach to identify and enhance the strengths of each student as well as allow them to learn and grow at their own pace and skill level. They have a variety of classes for both children and adults. If you are a newbie or already have some martial arts training you can rest assured you are in great hands with people who truly care about your success. I highly recommend you check them out soon!

Having studied, practiced, and taught martial arts for most of my life, about 40 years as a student, I can honestly say this school is one of the best in NW Indiana. (and I've tried almost all of them) Both of my young daughters attended and I also studied with Sensei Hestermann. Their approach is one of practicality and utility. They teach what works. They are phenomenal with children and focus on discipline and mutual respect. All children are welcome and they have worked with all levels of experience and abilities. They simply excel at working with you where you are in your development and skill level. Their patience and grace is legendary and many children return to study as young adults. If you are looking for a quality martial arts experience, for yourself or your children, look no further. This amazing school also focuses on giving back to the community. They have personally given away Thousands of toys to kids in need around the holidays. They walk the walk of community, service, humility, and dignity.

My two young nieces and my nephew attended classes briefly. Although they had never attended any jujutsu courses before, they were welcomed completely and encouraged to participate and learn. The instructors were wonderful with them, and helped them learn and follow instructions. Although the distance proved to be a little far for us, the kids enjoyed the classes and the instructors were phenomenal. They were very kind and good with them, and created a positive and welcoming learning environment for young children who were excited to learn and try something new.

Amazing facility and instructors. They are wonderful with children of different ages and abilities. My children look forward to class. Their prices are more than fair. My youngest had his birthday party there recently and it was amazing! The kids all had so much fun and we were able to sit back and enjoy watching them have fun instead of all the worries of a house party.

This is a great academy. I brought my son here over a year ago with hopes to improve his self-confidence. I've definitely noticed an improvement which I attribute to his training here. He's also improved his level of respect, self-discipline, and independence. All of the teachers are very knowledgeable in martial arts and the safety of the student comes first. I see many great life lessons being taught here. I signed up too about 6 months ago and have learned allot.
