My son has been training here for the last 5 months & I have 1 word to describe this Academy and it is “Quality” all over the place, the facilities are huge, clean, well organized and is by far the best jiu jitsu school in Calgary. It has been open and operating successfully for the last 20 years . Kids and adults can book 1 week free trial before enrolling, they have multiple memberships according to your needs (by day, group of 10 class, month to month or annual). Professor Josh Russell is amazing and connects wonderfully with the kids, he has 30 years of experience and he teaches all his classes himself, his techniques are provided in depth detail, he is very focused and gives corrections while you’re practicing to ensure every single student is performing correctly. meaning that you make progress in every class. The kids class is also led by Professor Fiona Geisinger, who gave us a warm welcome in the Academy as well as coach Teo Russell and coach Mike. Professor Fiona has 20 years experience and she is always supporting the students on the mats to bring the best out of them. If I could I would give this place 10 stars ⭐️
Posted 5 months agoJR Academy is an incredible gym... It is not just the top class Jiu Jitsu, the school being twenty years in existence, the myriad of black belts that have been with Josh since they were white belts, nor is it the fact that Josh trained in Brazil directly under Professor Carlos "Carlinhos" Gracie Jr, it is way more than that... Josh believes in technical proficiency above everything. He seeks to improve everybody, and does not play favorites. He is strict, but also fun. He instills an aura, and positive behaviors in his students, that leads to amazing mentoring which everybody embodies. New students are taken care of, and made to feel welcome. The first time I rolled with Josh, I didn't know Jiu Jitsu could be performed that well, it was mind blowing... The facility is large, the mat space is vast, cleaned every day, and is well maintained. The kids' program is amazing, and I am lucky to be a part of it, assisting coach Teo. I have seen kids' behavior improve immeasurably in a short time, and kids who have no confidence are coming out of their shells; it's a great aspect of the club. Professor Fiona has become a fantastic mentor to me. She encouraged me from the start, and is a big reason why I train at the club so often. I found myself in a great mood every time I walked out the door. Even after hard rolls, I always felt great, and I still feel this way a year and a half later. Thanks to Josh, Fiona and Teo, this school is top class in every respect. Michael
Posted 3 months agoAn amazing gym with wonderful professors. It is the first, and only, BJJ gym I've been to. The professors truly do this to share their love of BJJ and feel strongly about ensuring a safe and very competitive space. If you're interested in trying out BJJ, this is the place to be.
Posted 3 months agoI've trained here since 2014 and it's been a great environment for me to learn and develop my skills. Prof. Josh along with the other coaches are amazing mentors who take the time to teach each kid, and are able to build your confidence as you progress through your career. The coaches are very professional and always kind, with tons of mat area for training to accommodate. The atmosphere when training at JRA is great, everyone is excited to be there to learn, improve, and make great friendships through this sport. It's a great place to start learning BJJ and an even better place to work on advancing your skills and perfecting them. Would highly recommend to anyone in the area looking for a place to learn!
Posted 1 year agoI've been training with JR Academy for over a year now. Prof Josh is very passionate about BJJ and has been practicing and teaching the art since the 1990s. In addition to providing very detailed instruction on techniques, his anecdotes on where and how he learned the techniques and why they work the way they do is priceless. The training facility is very large and hygienic. The students are all welcoming and very open and willing to share their knowledge and experience. I feel very fortunate that I can attend a fundamentals class and have the opportunity to train with both my white belt friends and higher-ranking members, including black belts. Highly recommended.
