Hierba Mala BJJ is an amazing academy that makes you feel welcome from day one. Professor Luis sets the tone, super knowledgeable, patient and knows how to create an environment that’s both fun and focused. Whether you’re just starting out or have been training for years, there’s something here for everyone. The vibe is always positive and the team is supportive and down-to-earth. Highly recommend checking it out if you’re looking for a gym that balances solid technique with great energy.

To give some context, I’m not a competitive person not a natural martial artist. My onramping to these types of things was uncomfortable and filled with hesitancy. But it’s ended up being one of the best and most impactful things I’ve done in my life. I’ve trained at a handful of jiu jitsu and martial arts places and always quit because I shied away from the intimidation and people going way too hard trying to prove something. I can say without a doubt that if it weren’t for Luis and the other black belts at Hierba Mala, I never would have made it as far as I have, which is now a purple belt. Somehow Luis and the gang are this incredible mix of being extremely caring and supportive but also really challenging in a great way. It’s unique. And it feels like we’re a family, and new people are welcomed all the time with open arms. I’ve learned so many skills and grown in confidence and also become in much better shape from doing jiu jitsu. I can’t recommend this place highly enough.

I started going to Hierba Mala almost a year ago and I have never had an unpleasant experience. You will always be greeted with smiles and positive energy from not only the professor Luis, but the members as well. To any one that is on the fence about starting Jiu Jitsu, there is no better day to start than today. It is not too late, you will be treated with the same respect as anyone already attending from white belts to black belts. The women’s only class on Sundays is also a very welcoming group that is 100% a pathway into the mixed classes. I’ve seen many women, who were intimidated to start —now begin to feel comfortable and attend the mixed classes because everyone is so welcoming and positive.

Great teachers. Welcoming environment. Amazing community. I'm new to BJJ. I was invited by a friend to join. While excited to try something new, I was really out of shape and nervous about starting out in my 40s. Luis and the other black belts that instruct the classes have been amazing teachers. Encouraging, experienced, and patient. They're great about teaching folks of all skill levels. There's a culture of curiosity and fun that is visible in every single class I've attended. The community of students they've built up is extremely welcoming and supportive too. There's someone for everyone to partner with. Men, women, young, old, big, small are all there and have something to teach. I feel very lucky to have found a school as ideal as Hierba Mala and look forward to years of learning and camaraderie.

The women's only class was my first foray into any form of martial arts. Professor Luis has created a welcoming and comfortable space for Women who are interested in exploring BJJ. I would recommend this class to any of my friends. I've even started to attend the mixed classes and everyone I've met at Hierba Mala BJJ has been just as patient and helpful as Luis. I really can't wait to continue to grow with the school.
