Since becoming a mom, so much of my time and energy has been focused on my children — and while that’s a joy, I realized I had been putting myself on the back burner. I finally decided it was time to show up for me, and committing to Coach Kimo’s weekly women’s self-defense/BJJ class has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. The environment is welcoming, safe, and fun — no intimidation, just real support and learning. Coach Kimo does an incredible job teaching practical techniques while building confidence and awareness. I leave each class feeling stronger, more capable, and more connected to my body. If you're looking for a way to boost your self-confidence, increase your self-awareness, and get your body moving in a meaningful way, I highly recommend joining this class. You won’t regret it! Will update again once the kids start training! 💪🏾
Posted 10 months agoI’ve been taking the Women’s Self Defense class for 2 months now with Coach Kimo and it has been physically and mentally enlightening, challenging, and rewarding. Coach Kimo is a knowledgeable kind, firm, person and teacher. Each class has taught me to be more aware of my surroundings and how to approach potential situations that I would be able to handle if needed to defend myself. I look forward to learning more and becoming a part of the Heritage Jiu Jitsu community. 100% recommend joining this Womens Self Defense Class!
Posted 10 months agoStarted to practice in March and has been a great experience. From the main coach, Kimo Anderson, down to every white belt, everybody is nice, is there to learn and likes the sport. There is also classes for kids. Make sure to visit and talk to coach Kimo if you have any questions.
Posted 1 year agoMy son just join, and he is really happy with this expression !!
I came here on a Friday during an "open mat" session. For those that don't know, open mat isn't a class where an instructor gives you moves and students practice them with other students. It's a session where fighters of all skill levels spar with each other. That would've been an intimidating setting for a total noob like me but everyone on the mat took time to show me the basics and helped to make me feel comfortable enough to ask my questions... And now I've found a new sport I'm really enjoying! Professor Kimo's built a warm and welcoming community so if you're on the fence about trying the sport, brush the nerves aside and we'll see you at the gym :) UPDATE: One year later and I'm still here. I've made new friends, earned medals, and gained a new family. Amazing place to learn and grow in the sport of jiu jitsu.
I've been to a lot of academy's and heritage instantly the vibe feels friendly and feels like home. The instructor is so detailed with the technique, everyone wants to help and grow together. They say the hardest part is walking in, I can assure you not here. It's so welcoming. I like how the instructor is always exploring techniques and stops to see who has questions about it and being open minded and exploring that. Super smooth and very technical professor. If your experienced or not it's a lot of fun and you feel part of the team from the moment you walk in. ✌️🤙
Great place to train! Kimo is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. He will train to your level, whether that be first timer or 10 year purple belt. Welcoming and friendly environment to the max!!!
"My kids have been attending Heritage Jiu Jitsu for the past year and I couldn't be happier with the experience. The instructors are amazing with children- patient, encouraging, and skilled at making the classes both fun and educational. My kids have not only learned self-defense techniques but have also gained confidence, discipline, and respect for others. The environment is positive and supportive, and I love seeing how excited my children are to attend each class. I highly recommend Heritage Jiu Jitsu, for any parent looking to build their child's physical and mental strength. We recently found out my son has Autism stage 1. He went from being quiet, shy to a happy, positive kiddo. We definitely have seen the improvement in his behavior. ♥️
Great coaches. My son started and then my daughter. Both love it. They are treated very well and have learned very fast.
Great group to train with. Professor Kimo is very knowledgable and Lineage is legit
This is an awesome place to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! Kimo and all the Coaches are Great and knowledgeable. I have been coming here a couple of months now as a student and it has been nothing but a positive experience. This school is welcoming, clean and friendly. A great place to get a great workout. As a Martial Artist, I am whole heartedly appreciative that I have found Heritage Bjj to continue my learning. Thank you Kimo!
We visited from NorCal and we had a great time training with Professor Kimo and his team for the week. The school has a great atmosphere and is very welcoming to all wanting to train. We came in early and watched the kids class… The coaches were laser focused on helping them use correct technique in each rep. We 1,000% recommend this academy!
Very welcoming and learning environment for all levels and ages.
My child loves it so much, really enjoy it. Im very happy to find this place. 100%recommend it
Professional and knowledgeable instructors. Clean facility. My kids love Coach Ray, Coach Freddy and Professor Kimo.
Heritage is a very welcoming place. You don’t need to have prior experience to train. The professors help you learn. Recommended everyone to do it, especially for the women to know self defense.
My kids and I signed up exactly a month ago, but got sick right after so we really didn't start training until three weeks ago (but that's besides the point). The experience so far has been phenomenal! I was worried the kids (ages 4 and 5) wouldn't like it, but they love every bit of it! Professor Kimo, Coach Ray and Coach Freddie are great with the kids! They make it fun and enjoyable while still being able to teach techniques. Additionally, the coaches give every bit of attention to ALL the kids. I have an older son that I took to a different gym for jiu jitsu years ago, and I noticed the instruction there compared to Heritage JJ is like night and day. It is much more structured here in my opinion, which I feel helps the kids learn better. I've also enjoyed training here. The vibe is great... very laid back and welcoming. It's a reflection of Professor Kimo. When I first came in to check it out, I immediately felt the welcoming vibe. Once I started training, every student there, along with the coaches, have been super supportive and always willing to teach and provide constructive criticism. It's only been three weeks of training but I feel like I've already improved mentally and physically. Also seeing the dedication with the kids brings me a lot of joy as a parent! HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ACADEMY!
Professor Kimo is an awesome instructor! He teaches you the technique part by part and breaks it down. I can tell he cares for his students and loves his job! Based on my personal experience as a teammate, student and spectator he has phenomenal teaching and interpersonal skills. He has a great schedule and also has private lessons.
Heritage Jiu Jitsu is family friendly, knowledgeable, supportive, and promotes positive self esteem. They challenge youth to be the best version of themselves and teach discipline on and off the mat.
Signed up my son about 5 months ago and he absolutely loves it. Great coaches and great environment.
When starting your martial arts journey its always difficult to find a gym where you feel comfortable and is surrounded by great people and instructors. Heritage fills all those expectations and needs. The owner Kimo is such a great guy and welcomes everyone every time. If you want to truly enjoy the art and sport of jiu jit su definitely stop by for a class and don't take my word for it ( even though i wont be wrong lol) I love training there and love the people there. All instructors are great also.
I am currently a brown belt. I do a lot of drop ins all over San Diego, and that is mainly because of my LEO work schedule, and because I am currently looking to move back to my home town. Some of the gyms in San Diego that I have dropped in at I have gone back to, and some of them I’ve made sure to only visit once and never go back again. Those bad experiences at the gyms I’ve gone to is mainly because the instructors have given off a bad vibe. When I dropped in at Heritage the first time I noticed the owner (Kimo) was very welcoming, and down to earth. As soon as he mentioned he was a Clark Gracie black belt, I knew he was legit. I’ve been to Heritage about 3x’s, and each time I have learned details in techniques that I’ve been doing for years, but may have missed the small details along the way. The academy membership/private lesson prices are very reasonable for what is being taught. I haven’t gone to a private lesson yet, but I plan to when time permits in my schedule. Another thing I look for when I drop in at gyms is how the students are. I noticed his students were super chill, and relaxed. I could tell that his white belts will most likely become savages with the instruction from him.
I found heritage jiu jitsu through a friend and it’s been the best experience for my boys. The gym is very clean and the instructors are so knowledgeable and also so amazing with the kids. It’s teaching them discipline, self defense, and fitness and it’s fun! It has become my kids world. Highly recommend to check it out.
San Diego is considered the "mecca" Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academies with over 30 in the region. What sets Heritage apart from other Jiu Jitsu academies is Profesor Kimo Anderson's professionalism and welcoming attitude. This is reflective in his assistants and students. Great academy for middle aged students and young people.
On of the best decisions ive made, i wish i could attend more but work gets doesnt let me. Been here since dec now and i love it. Kimo is the best and the guys ive met are all super cool. Always helping out. 10/10 in my opinion
I attend and my 6 yo daughter attends. Everyone there is so great. They make sure each new move is explained and demonstrated thoroughly and that everyone is safely executing the moves. They are so great with the kids, they have enough staff monitoring them and helping them at all times. This place is great!
Besides the martial arts itself, Heritage Academy is a great place to learn discipline, self-awareness, team-building, and to experience personal growth. Kimo and the staff are very personable and will work with you if you have certain goals in mind. They are professional and welcoming. I’m very proud to be a part of this family and I look forward to getting to know everyone else that joins. Ohana.
This is my new home. When I walked into Haritage, I didn't know what to expect. I was welcomed with open arms and immediately felt like family. It's been my favorite place to get some exercise and gain knowledge in the sport of jiu-jitsu. Learning is fun and Kimo has helped me build up my confidence. This is an idea place for anyone to start a new journey with a great group of motivated people that are willing to help you along the way. If you are interested in building your confidence, getting stronger, or to just relieve some stress, come join us and become an everyday warrior. Thank you Kimo. OSS
Been training with Kimo for almost 3 years and as soon as he opened up his new place I became part of the family . Nothing but positive vibes and good attitudes here. He welcomes everyone that walks through that door like they’re family and I love it . Going to be coming here for a long time and don’t plan on leaving . I recommend Heritage JJ to everyone in Chula Vista let alone all of San Diego !
This academy is legit!!! Professor Kimo Anderson is very articulate and through in the way he instructs his students. I do recommend this academy to anyone who wants quality instructions in Jiu-jitsu.
My son has been working with Kimo for almost a year and it’s been such a great experience for him. I plan on enrolling my other son soon too. Kimo is really good at teaching how to focus on individual strengths, very patient, great trainer. Great pricing, nice new location, definitely recommend!
Dope people. I was blessed with the opportunity to roll with them and I have nothing but good things to say about them and the facility. Everything was insanely clean and the Head Instructor was very kind and well spoken. Outstanding environment for all levels.
Great instruction and training along with a welcoming environment. Academy is brand new and very clean. Tuition cost is very affordable and posted up directly on the front page of the website. No uniform requirements besides the traditional IBJJF approved color gis of white, black, and blue. I appreciate that Professor Kimo encourages rolls where our partners take care of each other, so we can focus on longevity and training consistency without putting each other out due to injuries. Higher belts here are kind and give me tips as well. Great place for beginners like myself!
Very welcoming, and very thorough and detailed instruction. Highly recommend.
