Hardeep Virdee
Hardeep Virdee
Black Belt

I’ve been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for over 11 years and hold a black belt, with a background in Muay Thai that shaped my understanding of pressure, timing, and control. My coaching style focuses on strong fundamentals, intelligent pressure, and helping students build an efficient, reliable game. Outside the academy, I work as a teacher, and I bring those same skills onto the mats creating a safe, supportive environment where students are encouraged to learn, experiment, and grow at their own pace. My aim is to help students build confidence, train smart, and develop a game they can trust.

Richard Gray
Richard Gray
Blue Belt

Richie is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt under David Tobin at HJJA. Rich is backed by over 20 years of competitive combat experience across multiple disciplines, including professional boxing, Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His background brings a disciplined, pressure-tested approach to training and competition. Centred predominantly on gi-based jiu-jitsu, Rich focuses on efficiency, strategic decision-making, and psychological resilience under stress. With a strong interest in competition psychology, he prioritises confidence, composure, resilience and above all else HAPPINESS as key attributes to performing on the mats.

Ryan Ellis
Ryan Ellis
Black Belt

Im Ryan a black belt at Havering jiu jitsu academy, I started training at 18 in 2015 as a way to get fit, but it’s done so much more. It improved my confidence, introduced me to a great community and there’s no faster way to forget the days stresses than being under knee on belly. I coach the Wednesday class and am always looking to learn, improve and try new moves whilst helping others do the same. When coaching I try and encourage people to experiment and find the things they enjoy about the sport whilst they grow, so they can have as great a jiu jitsu journey as Ive had.

My two boys ages 8 & 7 train at Havering Jiu Jitsu and they both absolutely love it there. David (the head coach) takes the classes and is really present in the classes really putting time and effort into developing all the boys & girls. The classes engage the kids and it’s great to see a full mat each class full of kids happy learning BJJ. Lauren (owner) on the desk is always helpful and also great with all the kids. It all creates a really positive environment and I recommend anyone on the fence to try out a class and see for yourself. My kids have not only improved drastically in their BJJ ability since training with David but also outside the gym they have gained confidence and they look forward to training each week. The adult classes are great too full of a wide range of abilities being taught really high level BJJ by David. I cannot recommend the place highly enough.

Very good BBJ class. My daughter really enjoys going every Tuesdays and Thursdays. They provide a very positive and friendly environment, taking time to teach the kids different grappling techniques in detail.

My son has been going to HJJA for a year now and he has shown a noticeable improvement in his overall development both inside and outside of his lessons. HJJA have helped my son build up the confidence and drive to achieve in his jiu-jitsu development since starting his HJJA journey and this culminated in his participation in a recent grappling competition. HJJA has helped my son build his confidence, discipline and fitness. Thank you David and HJJA

We just joined BJJ Academy a month ago , and i am beyond impressed with the progress my kids have made in such short time. The instructors are incredibly patient , knowledgeable and can see the dedication in helping each student grow both philosophical and mentally . I have seen a noticeable boost in my children’s confidence since they started here. The environment is welcoming and supportive making it great place for kids to learn and thrive. Highly recommend BJJ Havering Academy Essex for any parents looking for a fantastic martial arts program for their children that would help them become better individuals and teach them self-defence.
