  I had the pleasure of visiting Gustavo Dantas Jiu-Jitsu Academy while in Tempe, AZ, and it was an incredible experience. As a purple belt from Toronto, I’ve trained at many gyms, but GD Jiu-Jitsu stood out in every way. From the moment I walked in, I was welcomed like part of the team. The atmosphere was friendly, professional, and full of high-level training partners who were both skilled and supportive. Professor Gustavo Dantas, a true legend in the sport, was incredibly approachable and took time to share his knowledge. I walked away with some amazing new techniques that I can’t wait to incorporate into my game. If you’re in the Tempe area—whether you’re a local or just visiting—you need to check out GD Jiu-Jitsu. The instruction is world-class, the community is welcoming, and the experience is second to none. I can’t wait to come back!

  GD provides such a great environment to learn and grow. My family all attend (kids-6 & 9). Coaches are patient and skilled. Morning class is the best thing I could do before heading to work. All staff are helpful and kind. Professors are knowledgeable and great at breaking down technique. The class culture is respectful and I feel I can roll with anyone.

  This is a really great gym! It has a friendly and welcoming vibe. Very high quality coaches. The facilities are clean. There is a good variety of class times. I could not recommend training here enough! Great place for someone looking to compete or just pick up a new hobby.

  I dropped in while on a business trip. Front desk was very welcoming and facility is super clean. If you are a beginner or a high level competitor, Professor Gustavo's instruction and mental coaching is beneficial to anyone. There are 2 mats for different level classes and 3 showers to clean up after training. I would definitely recommend and will come back.

  I am visiting Phoenix from Houston, and I was looking for a gym to train at while in town. I dropped in and trained at the 6:30am class. I had a great time, from the instructor Paul and the other students all welcomed me and had a really good class. I highly recommend this gym if you are wanting to start jiu jitsu

  I stopped by Gustavo Dantas’s gym yesterday, for the first time, for the 10 am Advanced class. I am a black belt from the St. Louis area and train and compete around the World. I can tell you he has one of the nicest facilities that I have seen. Everyone was very nice and respectful. Standard warm up followed by great technique instruction from 2 degree Black Belt Josh Rodriquez. Situational sparring in different positions both top and bottom and then live sparring. I highly recommend this gym for those who live in the area and are interested in learning this great art. It’s the perfect place if you are an ASU student because it is right next to campus or if you are visiting your ASU kids and you don’t want to miss a work out. Much respect to Gustavo Dantas, after 36 years in the sport is still putting himself out there competing in the biggest tournaments in the world.   This is an outstanding BJJ gym. I train in SC but was in Phoenix on business for the weekend and was recommended to stop by for a drop in. From calling in ahead of time, check-in, to roll-time, this place is professional top to bottom. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful, the higher belts roll with the whites and help advance their game without a second thought. I can't say enough good things about this gym and the people here. If you live in Phoenix or are just visiting like me and you want to train BJJ, this is the place to go!

  My seven-year-old loves coming here, and I am really pleased with the experience. The instructors, especially Teague, do a fantastic job with the kids—firm when needed but always kind and encouraging. Jiu jitsu has been great for building my kid's confidence and self-discipline, and the place has a real sense of community and is very welcoming to beginners.

  My brother is a blue belt practitioner of this Academy. I was visiting him for a week. We decided to drop in on a class. I am a blue belt at Easton's Academy's/Matrix Castle Rock Colorado. I had the pleasure to learn from Professor Dantas himself. it was a very special experience and to be able to share it with my brother was awesome. They were very welcoming and willing to treat me like a regular member. Thank you for allowing me to roll with a great group of skilled practitioners. I will highly recommend this academy to visit.

  I was visiting from out of town and was lucky to find Gustavo Dantas Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy. From the moment I walked through the door everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Charissa helped set me up with a visitors pass. For anyone who lives in the area and wants to start training BJJ or wants to start but has reservations about starting for whatever reason, I recommend checking out GD BJJ. They make you feel at home and the skill level of the coaches and athletes is superb. During my time there I had the privilege of training with several coaches (Gustavo and Josh) and it was a humbling reminder of how much more I still have to learn. Beyond being incredible athletes the instruction is also excellent and the techniques shown are applicable in multiple scenarios. All of the instructors made themselves available after class to answer any questions the students might have. I learned a lot in only a few days of training there. The gym itself is huge with two large mat spaces, plenty of space for spectators, large locker rooms, and water fountains. Without a doubt one of the best gyms I've ever had the pleasure of training at, I'm looking forward to my next visit the next time I'm in Tempe.

  I really love how welcomed I felt since my son first started back in 2022. He stopped practice and now we are back in 2024 but with his sisters too. The coaches are amazing. They instill responsibility, confidence, respect, and much more into my children. My children enjoy it and look forward to practice. I’m happy to be back. I enjoy seeing my kids have fun.

  My son has been going to GD jiu jitsu for many years. Myself just started less than a month ago. But so far my experience from learning here has been different than at other locations that I attended. All the coaches are very nice and kind and humble. They are so patient at teaching us. I am new at this and they don’t mind correcting me all the time so that I’m better at my moves. It’s just a different atmosphere here. Not just the coaches, everyone comes here to practice is also nice and kind and humble. I trust coach Teague and coach Zane with my son and I have been learning so much from coach Brandon and also coach Teague and Zane. Coach Charissa is actually the heart of the gym. She always has a smile on her face and she connects everyone to get to know each other. But mainly coach Gustavo is the reason why we have such a wonderful place. He is the owner of the gym with more than 40 years experience. He is humble and kind and makes sure we are all safe and do the right thing. At GD jiu jitsu, it feels like a family. Thank you for creating such a wonderful environment for us to learn and be better.

  We love Gustavo Dantas Brazilian Jiu- Jitsu! we were looking for a place for our six-year-old to do Jiu Jitsu for a while and right when we walked in, we were welcomed warmly and given a tour. The staff and instructors are beyond friendly and super good with the kids. If you’re on the fence about signing up, give it a try with their free trial class and I can almost guarantee you or your child will love it. Not only do they make you feel like family, but the facility is also very clean and nicely kept. 100% recommend.

  Warm welcomes from the time you do a trial and every day after that ! The staff is incredibly knowledgable and kind. GD facility is super clean and spacious allowing you to bring your family to watch your children's classes. Coach Teague is exceptional I can not say enough good things about him. He commands respect from the kids while being very patient with them. Redirects my son in such a positive manner and in the short time we have been coming here I can already see the benefits of implementing Jiu Jitsu at a young age. My son looks forward to his classes and practices at home. He applies the gentle reminders from all the instructors on character building, working as team and confidence. We are very fortunate to have found such an exemplary Academy and plan to continue growing my kiddos skills here for years to come.

  My Son loves GD BJJ. Their coaches are like kid whispers. We have had the hardest time for him to find a sport that he likes. BJJ is the ones that he found. We go twice a week and the others kids are so supportive of him and each other.

  My son started training at GD in 2015 because of bullying. It boosted his confidence to know that he is able to protect himself now. We join a few years later and it was life changing. We have trained at other gyms while traveling but there's nothing like GD. Great coaches and a wonderful family atmosphere.   I travel for work and drop in to bjj classes all over the US. This academy was one of the nicest facilities I've been to and Gustavo was super-nice and welcoming. Charissa helped me sign a waiver and answered questions before coming in to an advanced class. The class was great, it focused on a certain system versus a specific move. At the end we did 5 minute rolls that went on past the hour class if you wanted to. Gustavo invited me to a roll along with another black belt too. Everyone was very friendly and professional during the rolls. I will definitely be coming back next time I am in the area.

  I’ve been practicing for over 15 years. I was in town looking for a quick workout, and recalled my tangential, but personal connection to Gustavo and Nova Uniao. The hospitality and customer service were great. Charissa was happy to answer all of my questions and made sure I felt welcome when I arrived. Everyone on the mats was warm. I didn’t feel like a stranger. I originally went to the 10am Wednesday class because Gustavo was supposed to be teaching. Charissa let me know ahead of time that Gustavo had to go out of town. I wasn’t disappointed, though. Josh taught an excellent class. Overall, this was a wonderful experience. I’ll definitely be back here when I’m in town. -Von

  Both my sister and I train here. I switched from a different jiu jitsu academy to GD last year in May and have not regretted my decision since. There are many classes provided for all skill levels and age groups. Not only does GD supply an amazing curriculum for its students but also a natural formation of a family. Mental health is a huge topic of discussion as it can coincide with practicing jiu jitsu. Gustavo has many quotes on the walls to help encourage his students on and off the mats. Whether you’re looking to do this for fun or test your skills in competition, GD is the perfect place to learn from. Best coaches and teammates by far! This is the home of world champions, competitors and at the same time it is the home of the family person who works a 9-5 job . I am an Army Veteran and currently a Police Officer, I use the skills I learn here almost daily. I use the physical applications and the mental lessons learned here . The instructor’s are world class! Such a great place to learn the Art of Jiu Jitsu!

  We have trained at many Bjj academies across the United States. Gustavo’s attention to detail as well as the personal attention he gives to his students is second to none. He has a “your success is my success attitude” that resonates throughout the academy.   I have been training at GD for over a year and have had the greatest experience! I started training when I was going to ASU and have met the most wonderful people. Everyone here is very welcoming and understanding. The professors are very knowledgeable and helpful in supporting each student with their own goals. I have trained here through injury and have been supported every step of the way. There are classes for all ages and skill sets. I am so grateful to be a part of such an excellent academy.

  I’m really grateful for this place. My girlfriend gifted me some classes for my birthday, and since then (about two months ago), I’ve been attending twice a week. I had no previous training before joining, but I feel very comfortable learning here. From my very first visit, I felt welcomed, and I always leave feeling more uplifted than when I arrived.   I have nothing but good to say about my family’s experience at GD jiu jitsu. We’ve been training at the academy for 6 years and we feel at home at GD. Gustavo Dantas is a highly decorated Brazilian jiu jitsu competitor and professor. Our coaching staff are all high level competitors as well and openly share their knowledge and experience with everyone. From the kids classes to the adult classes, the students are expected to give their all and are pushed to become the best versions of themselves possible. We intend on being life long members of the GD family. I recommend the academy to anyone who is wanting true Brazilian jiu jitsu training and self improvement. 10/10❤️

  Was visiting out of town and saw great reviews for GD jiujitsu which was near my hotel. I attended a class taught by Professor Josh. Class is technical yet explained clearly to grasp quickly. It was a positive environment. Had a great time, and highly recommend to anyone considering attending a class. OSSS!

  We absolutely love GD Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! My son is not into sports, also he was having issues in controlling his emotions and lack of self confidence on top of all that he's very active and needs to find a way to spend all his energy. So we were looking for some activity that could help him in all those areas plus in Brazilian and there's a special connection here for us! My son loves training, his coach has helped him with many struggles including being bullied at school and he made many good friends! GD is our new favorite place and our "tribe"! 100% recommend that you come and chervil it out for yourself! ♥️

  I recently moved to Tempe from Canada and GD has quickly become my home away from home! The coaches are super nice and genuinely care about you and your growth. Everyone in class is also friendly and upper belts are very helpful. No matter who you are, you’ll find a place at GD!

  I traveled to the Phoenix/Tempe area from Oklahoma City and my professor recommended this gym. I was nervous having trained exclusively at my home gym. The people here were very welcoming. They put together great classes and training rounds. The instructors taught clearly and were helpful during the training rounds. I highly recommend this academy to any Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.

  GD academy is filled with great talent and professionalism. The instructors get a feel for each student’s growth/advancements and adapt their teaching styles to fit the student’s needs. Everyone there is extremely knowledgeable and even the other students are very welcoming when it comes to new students entering the gym. In fact, my wife and I along with our four kids (ages: 14, 10, 7, 4) travel 45 mins each way to train here at least 4 days a week because of the family vibe and friendly community that has grown here. I highly, highly recommend this place to start your BJJ journey. If you already train, I encourage you even more so to come try it out and find your new BJJ home here!

  I had a few days to process this but felt like I should provide this review. I attempted to call ahead and schedule a drop-in, wasn't able to reach anyone but decided to show up anyways given that I was close by. After being unable to get a few people's attention, the instructor eventually came out to talk to me but said that they only accept drop-ins who call and schedule ahead. Fair enough, but what happened next was pretty alarming for me. After the instructor informed me on their policy for drop-ins, he slowly started walking towards me, slightly invading my personal space and forcing me to back up to keep a space between us, essentially pushing me to the door. I found this wholly unnecessary, I was going to leave regardless and the whole experience left me feeling like I was an invader. I travel a lot for work and I have never had this experience at any drop-in, and will look elsewhere next time I'm in the Tempe area. Edit: I was re-visiting my reviews and saw that the owner took the time to respond, which I greatly appreciate. Ultimately I noticed that they didn't mention anything about the audio which I think greatly factored into my feelings of being unwelcome. However I don't wish them any ill will and only hope that others don't have the same experience I did. Thanks for taking the time to respond owner

  I have no idea what just happened. But I came into Gustavo out of curiosity and see what they had to offer. But I was interrogated or accused to be someone else or something. It was uncomfortable & confusing. I'd recommend looking elsewhere for beginners.
