I’d give Gracie Barra San Antonio more stars if I could. The culture that they’ve created there is amazing. It’s one of love, hard work, and discipline. I have 4 kids from 10-17 that attend and they are so good with each age group. They’ve even got their 70 year old grandfather attending with them now and he loves it as well. They genuinely care about each of their students. It has been a blessing to find this school. ***update Since writing my initial review, I’ve joined my family at Gracie Barra San Antonio, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. I had always been hesitant to start BJJ, but when they introduced an all-women’s class, I decided to give it a shot. Not only is it an incredible workout, but I’m surrounded by an amazing group of women. My son started online school and participates in GB San Antonio’s homeschool class for PE, which has become the highlight of his week. Professor Fabiana is an outstanding athlete with a deep understanding of the sport. She’s incredibly attentive to each person’s needs, which makes her classes accessible to a wide variety of people. The other professors and coaches who work alongside her are exceptional.

I have been attending the all women’s fundamentals class (GBF) for about 6 months. I started jiu-jitsu at 34 and bring my baby girl with me. I recommend it to all my female/mom friends. It’s an incredible culture to be a part of. The coaches are friendly, inviting, approachable, and interactive. The training is addicting and fun, challenging and a great workout! The gym is clean, well kept and organized, with a great waiting area for the whole family.

I'm from another gym but dropped in while I was here on vacation. I recently attended their GB3 live rounds session and it was a great time! The workout was intense and challenging, and the senior belts helped me improve my game. The other students were highly skilled and made for fantastic training partners. Professors Fabiana and Marcelo were knowledgeable and provided great guidance throughout the session. I will definitely come back if I'm back in the area. If you're seeking a BJJ gym with a lot of options for their training schedule, professional instructors, and skilled training partners, I highly recommend Gracie Barra San Antonio.

This gym is the embodiment of what BJJ is and what it should be. I've trained BJJ for 6 years at a variety of gyms, including when I had the privilege of training BJJ in Brazil for a year. The coaches and Professors here at GB San Antonio are knowledgeable, professional, and personable. They have set up an environment that is exactly the brotherhood/sisterhood I have come to love in a gym where I feel welcomed and I can train safely even while upping the intensity level. I love it here. Even when rolling with guys who are much stronger and heavier than I am, I feel safe and appropriately challenged because they've been taught to focus on technique rather than their muscular or size advantages. I attribute this to the atmosphere cultivated by the owner, Professor Fabiana. She is a fantastic athlete, teacher, and I feel grateful for the opportunity I have to learn from her. I absolutely love how many other female athletes are at this gym. While I've only been coming here a short while, I feel welcomed into the GB family. The gym is clean, with a friendly and competitive environment. While there are BJJ gyms closer to my house, I would never compromise quality over convenience.

Professor Fabiana has established an amazing program and an excellent facility in San Antonio. I visited on business for two weeks in October 2018 and trained there three times a week. The facilities are clean and spacious (there are changing rooms!). The instruction is top notch and delivered in an easy to understand manner. The upper belts are exceptional and encourage the lower belts with helpful tips during the class on how to improve their BJJ. Professor Fabiana even took the time to talk with me — a mere visitor — after class and share her observations and advice on balancing technique with power with the goal of improving how I roll. I am grateful for the warm welcome and exceptional professionalism combined with friendliness. She also has a well attended kids class and a growing women’s program. If you want to start or pick back up in BJJ and live in San Antonio, this is the place to go! UPDATE (Sep. 28, 2020): Prof. Fabiana continues to provide a top-notch academy that I recommend without reservation. I visited again for a week in March 2020 (pre-COVID) and in September 2020 (post-COVID). She maintains a clean, safe academy with high quality instruction. All the students are welcoming and genuinely warm. Prof. Fabiana and her coaches continue to deliver meaningful instruction that is clear and concise, and are always willing to circulate around the mat to provide nuanced improvements to help you become the best practitioner you can be. Thank you for allowing me to train as a visitor, Prof. Fabiana.

We enrolled our 6-year old daughter here almost a year ago. It's probably the best thing we've ever done for her. We have watched her confidence bloom. Her ability to focus and pay attention in school has increased significantly. These kids learn leadership skills and respect for self and others. They work hard and play hard (and sleep well). They build friendships and a healthy competitive spirit in a safe environment. The staff and families are welcoming and encourage each other. Professor Fabiana is a strong female role model. What a gift for our sons and especially our daughters. All the instructors are excellent. They are all patient, kind, encouraging, tough... They all have high expectations of these kids, and the kids always rise to challenge. I highly recommend this place.

If you are looking for a place to train or learn a martial art, Gracie Barra San Antonio is the place. Whether you’re an adult looking for a good workout, a competitor looking to sharpen your skills, or a parent looking for a school to teach confidence and strong values to your child, look no further. I have been training here for a year and a half and I have NEVER been there when it wasn’t impeccably clean, well lit, and with a friendly, professional atmosphere. The owner and head instructor, Fabiana Borges, is a world class competitor with a ton of knowledge and gift of teaching it to others, but more importantly she cares for her students and you can trust her 100% with your kids and your own safety. Can’t recommend highly enough. Come try a class. It will change your life!

I shopped around before visiting Prof Fabiana Borge's Gracie Barra San Antonio school, but none of them were right for me. I knew after my first class that this was it. BJJ is a workout for the body, the mind, and the heart. It's magical like that. But it's intimidating, too. But the GBSA family, its structure, and its culture, manage to pull off the trick of making newcomers feel safe but challenged at the same. (Plus, it's a lot of fun, too!) I recommend it to all my friends, and I will never stop. Try it out!

Prof Fabiana's school is a rare school that can cater to both the international competitor, and those who are just looking for a great way to stay in shape with jiu-jitsu. For the competitor, her experience as a World and Pan American Champion is invaluable. For those looking for a way to improve fitness and confidence, her positive attitude is contagious. Her kids classes are great, and she takes a personal interest in each of her students. My 8 and 10 year old daughters enjoy the large number of girls in the class, and this can be seen in her adult classes as well. Prior academies I have trained at had maybe one or two regular females. She is also exceptionally good with little rascals, including my stubborn 3 year old son :).

There are classes offered at a variety of times throughout the day, pretty much regardless of skill. Even if you can't train like a champ, you can still get better even twice a week. We are really grateful to have found this studio for our son, now 6 yrs old. He has been taking classes here for about a year, and we continue to be impressed. Both my husband and I have backgrounds in martial arts, so we've seen our fair share of kids martial arts classes. Professor Fabiana is extremely skilled at working with kids. She is patient, teaches the material to their level, and has a very positive way of motivating students and imparting a good work ethic that translates off the mat as well. Like many 6 yr old boys, ours is extremely high energy and typically loses interest in things quickly, but even after a year he looks forward to his jiu jitsu practices and is excited to learn new skills. In fact, he switched elementary schools, but we still drive 30 minutes after school to take him to this studio.

I was looking for a martial arts program for my family. I was impressed with the professionalism and politeness of not only the instructors but also of the students. So many times you find those in the martial arts try to impress you with how tough they are and how much you don't know. Gracie Barra Professor Fabiana and Coach Benito have welcomed my 3 daughters and 1 son(ages 21-13). They look forward to each class. Coach Alexa was very accommodating in finding Gi's and arraigning a payment plan. I am very pleased with the toughness of the program, while at the same time they are concerned with the safety of the fighters. If you look at the Marine and Army Combatives programs, you will see that they are adapting to this style of fighting.

I was looking for a workout outlet that would improve my mind, body and soul! I found that outlet at Gracie Barra San Antonio with Professor Fabiana. With everyday stresses of life and internal dialogue there is nothing better than having 1 to 2 hours were there is nothing your thinking about other than how am I going to get out of this armbar, triangle, uma-plata, wrist lock or what ever else your training partner comes up with(hahaha and they come up with some stuff). The atmosphere is one of safety and compassion for your training partner and yourself. After every class I leave with a full peace of mind and a sense of achievement. I want to thank Professor Fabiana for bring this gentle Martial Art from Brazil to San Antonio and her overall love for the sport and the benefits it brings with it(cardio, flexibility, strength, self-awareness, compassion, will to be a better person, self defense, self confidence, problem solving skills). Thank you again Professor and keep up the great job and passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!!!

Everyone is SUPER nice and makes you feel welcomed! They try very hard to get to know your name and your family right away. Highly recommended! Give them a try during a FREE intro class! VERY kid-friendly! Awesome for women too! They are passionate about teaching self-defense and anti-bullying maneuvers, they sometimes offer FREE classes! Well organized and the kids get quite a work out each time! There is always at least the Professor and 1-2 coaches instructing the class giving the kids a good student to teacher ratio each lesson. They even have Parent's Night Out once a month! This place is also VERY professional. They wear a full Gracie Barra jiu-jitsu Gi uniform each class. If you do not have one, you can rent one monthly ($30) or just buy one ($150). They will let you borrow one during the free intro class, so no worries! You pay for what you get. And this is definitely the way to go!

I know absolutely ZERO about BJJ, but when I mentioned to a co-worker of mine who used to compete in MMA and trains at BJJ who my son was learning from, he told me without reservation, "Fabiana is the real deal. He's going to be lucky to learn from her, she's a PanAm and world champion.". In the few times I've been able to watch my son (10 years old), you can tell instantly that not only does Fabiana know her craft well, she has a knack in dealing with kids and makes the classes not only informative for them, she makes them fun. That's not to say it's just a bunch of kids running around in kimonos learning nothing, these kids are learning the craft and learning it well. I made the mistake one evening of asking my son to show me some of what he's learned from Fabiana. Waking up the next morning and having to will my arm to move so I could brush my teeth isn't all that much fun.

The reason being is because the instructor is soft spoken (with an accent) and friendly for kids. Great for young ones who are just starting out and don't want to be intimidated. Now here is the issues. Hopefully the management reads this and fix the issues as a lot of people who are doing the reviews are lying to themselves. My daughter have been there for several years now. Her progress has slow down. They teach the same craps over and over and over. Nothing new. Then they give belt advancement for attendance and not necessary on what the child know or have learned. At tournaments, Gracie's kids who are gray belt are getting their butt whoop by kids elsewhere with white belt. That is a problem don't you think? All you ever hear about is the Superman move. Its ridiculous. Also, all of her helper and clueless. They are just helping out to get some free classes. I saw a kid once almost yang another kid's arm off with an arm bar and the assistant just stood there looking at it. Also, please do a better job of washing the mat. Its stinks like feet in there all the time. I know there is sweat from everyone but a constant smell of dirty feet is disgusting. I hated that my daughter is rolling around on the disgusting GERM floor. And last but not least, turn the AC on during the summer and Heat on during the Winter. Don't be so cheap. Its hot and sweaty in there during the summer heat. Bottom line is that its OK. A 2 or 3 Star out of 5 Star. Great for newbies but after a year or so, move them elsewhere as there are better school out there. Yes the name Gracie Barra is well known dues to the good marketing they have done. However, a school or class is just as great as the instructor and helpers that teaches the class. One last advice, people signed up for the class to be taught by the main instructor, not the assistants who are White, Gray or Blue belt. The main instructor is a black belt but she is constant gone all the time here and there. She travels all the time for competition. What are you paying for? Are you paying the high price to be taught by the assistants or the Black Belt Instructor who is not there to teach you as she is on the move. I hope this help and I hope the management take this as a constructive criticisms and hopefully they will make it better.

Review Update: I was looking for a place where my family and I could be active and learn in a safe/respectful environment. The camaraderie at GBSA was similar to what I had in the military with other veterans training. The environment was more respectful and safer. From what I have witnessed in my 7 and half years training there, it has declined rapidly in both aspects. I have witnessed an instructor giving permission for a student to train with an active skin infection (reported to the owner). I witnessed a black belt berate a student for asking a "stupid question" (also reported to the owner). I myself on 7OCT23 was targeted by a black belt when he attempted to grab my cane out of my hand while I was looking away. I reported it immediately to the lead instructor (Marcelo) and told him my family and I do not feel safe to return to training until the owner addresses the issue. The owner, Fabiana Borges, was out of town. When Fabiana returned and I asked for a follow-up, I was met with silence. We canceled our membership of almost 8 years. Any school that promotes anti-bullying, safety, and inclusiveness should hold their black belt instructors to a higher standard. Don't waste your time placing your family in danger. You will not be protected.

I want to share my experiences to any prospective parents considering to start their child in classes here. The owner said they already have 380 students, and they don't want my business when I refused to sign anymore documents until my questions were properly answered. These documents were not required the day I signed my membership contract, which I regretted very quickly after signing. Some pros and cons of my experience with them: Pros: - Great fitness and fun learning environment Cons: - Classes for kids are extremely overcrowded on popular days. No remedy was being offered for this. - While cash/check are allowed, they frown on it to the point they'd rather force you to put a credit card on file. - There's no make-up classes allowed period. Even if your child is sick, injured, has surgery, or Dr. appts with a Dr. notes. I never got a straight answer on whether make-up classes are offered if your class day falls on a holiday. - Very rigid policies. If you want a more flexible schedule with classes, you're pretty much forced to use their highest paid membership (unlimited), vs the cheaper 2x/week ($160/month) or 1x/week memberships. Trying to downgrade your membership requires a 30-day notice, so you're stuck for a month at the higher cost membership. - Membership cancellation requires a 60-DAYs notice. Something to keep in mind if your kid decides they don't want to do Jiu-Jitsu anymore. - The start-up costs are very high ($100 initiation + $180 uniform + first months dues) UPDATE 9/18/2022 (in response to owner's reply): Thank you for your reply to my review. To clarify, I was definitely present with my wife when we signed the membership contract. We were never informed when we joined (either verbally or on paper) that a credit card was required to be on file even if we're paying cash. We double checked the membership policy and having a credit card on file when paying cash is not stated anywhere within it. Further, regarding the schedule, we clarified our availability with you when we joined. It was not immediately clear that this was an exemption to your policies. We believed we were following your policy, when it was you that made an exemption to your policy in order to have us join. When my wife came in to try and change our schedule, she became confused with the policies and was trying to clarify with your staff, unsuccessfully. You then interrupted their conversion, wanting my wife to sign two more forms that we never saw when we joined. When my wife refused to sign the forms until her questions were answered, you then told her that we were no longer welcome at your facility. From the beginning, we were never asking you to compromise your own policy or give us exemptions to it. The "exemptions" you gave us when we joined, which you then wanted to take back after we joined, certainly influenced us to join. Finally, I believe I've kept my review professional in only criticizing your business policy and our experience with it. Personal attacks on my wife by calling her very demanding and rude are un-warranted and very unprofessional. I certainly hope you can do better with your future clients.
