My journey into BJJ wasn't driven by a desire to be the best, or to earn stripes and belts. Instead, it was driven by the need to find a positive outlet and face personal challenges head-on. As I've progressed, I've seen a huge improvement in my mental health. This gym has been a lifeline, providing the solace and safe environment I need to manage my PTSD and continue growing not only for myself, but more importantly, for my family.
Posted 11 months agoMy daughter has just left Cosens in Grand Blanc because she was not getting at all what she needed from there. We came to Gracie Barra as a trial to make sure we were going to like it, turns out we loved it. We have been going for a couple months now and let me tell you since day one. My daughter has absolutely loved it, her coaches, everything! The coaches are so Hands-On and help the children so much. I highly recommend this place to anyone!!

Very good gym can learn a lot with the great instructors here.
Great family environment. We have 2 girls 12 & 6 who go for ju Jitsu and Muay Thai. Coach Muay and the team are patient and great teachers. This is true training, not like a karate class. The kids apply what they learn each session in sparing. It's not hard, just focused. My 3 yr old son has even been allowed to take part and will be full-on training next year.
Good environment with a great team leading it, enjoyed every moment i've had there!
Just got my blue belt in jiu jitsu after 18 months of putting in the work. I’m ecstatic with the progress I’ve made, and I’m so excited to keep going. The atmosphere has remained positive and encouraging, the teachers and higher belts continue to foster a culture of respect and patience for all belt levels. I’ve made such wonderful friends along the way. 🥰 Everyone has become like family! 🥰
Incredible JiuJitsu and Muay Thai gym in mid Michigan. Instructors are very knowledgeable and kind. Teammates are all very wonderful as well. All around a great atmosphere that motivates me to work hard and have fun!
Great place to learn bjj and Muay Thai. You’ll find a great team of people working together to learn new skills and get better at martial arts. I highly recommend!
I love training here. I'm very thankful for all the coaches, training partners, and friends that I've made over my 3.5 year journey here. I cant wait to continue to grow and learn from not only Professor Burchfield, but all of the great coaches that teach and are always willing to help. I highly recommend anyone who is considering to try jiu jitsu, to take that step and come to Gracie Barra Burton. It's addicting and I promise it'll be the best thing you ever do!
I apprecilove the instructors for being persistent with the students learning and their hands on verbally as well
I've had an awesome experience at Gracie Barra Burton Jiu-Jitsu & Muay Thai gym. The people here are super cool and friendly, which makes the atmosphere really welcoming. The classes are intense but in the best way possible—they’re packed with details that really help you improve. I also love that they have different rooms for the courses, plus a separate space filled with workout machines, so you can get in a great workout. Overall, it’s a fantastic place to train and grow your skills!
Absolutely the best gym around, no negativity, lots of teamwork feel to classes. Love it! BJJ or Muay Thai this is the place
If you need a place to call home, this is your gym! They are my extended family that I met on the mat! Professor Burchfield has several years of experience and the family environment he created is very welcoming and supportive!
It’s a great academic to be apart of! The staff is really nice and helpful if anyone has any questions. Classes are taught very well by all teachers. I would recommend this school to people of all ages and sizes!
I have 4 months training Muay-Thai. Not necessary to have previously martial arts knowledge. I love this place, Coach Pavel is an excellent guide and a funny person. Everybody is willing to help you and explaining the details on the complicated exercises. If you are looking for a gym to train and have a great time, this is the place.
I've been training at Gracie Barra Burton for about a year now, and I couldn't be happier with my experience. The staff here is fantastic, and I mostly work with Pav and Ryan who instruct Muay Thai. Both are incredibly knowledgeable and patient, making every class challenging yet rewarding. Every time I attend, I leave feeling like I've gotten a great workout and learned something new. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the community is supportive. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking to train, whether you're a beginner or more experienced. Love this place!
I have been training at Gracie Barra Burton for about 7 1/2 years. Great atmosphere with amazing training partners. Professor Jim Burchfield is extremely knowledgeable and has been training for 30 years. He is always happy to share his knowledge, and he has become a good friend over the years.
I love this gym. From day one, you’re treated like you’re already a part of the gym. The instruction is top tier. I’ve been to other gyms before, and comparatively, I’ve retained the most martial arts knowledge at this gym because of how the curriculum is set up. Highly recommend.
Great instruction, and a very supportive environment. I would definitely recommend training here!
My daughter loves her BJJ and MT classes! The teachers are great and work really closely with the kids so they have the correct form. Highly recommend!
Great coaches and they pay awesome attention to teaching the techniques the right way
Great place for kids and adults alike, very professional staff and they really make it fun to train for kids. Highly recommend checking it out first class is free
Great environment, everyone is nice and wants to see you succeed!
This is a great and safe place to train. All the Members are great too! So blessed to be part of the family
Amazing! Love learning Muay Thai here. Pav and the other instructors are great. Everyone is super kind and friendly, too.
Very great staff and great training environment, the community feels like a family so you won’t ever feel out of place
The best, brings in great instructors a few times a year, world champion instructors for seminars....the people here are great, very comfortable
Great place to start your Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu training with quite a few exceptional coaches that care about your progression and safety through training!
Knowledgeable and passionate staff! Great experience and clean facilities! Definitely recommend
My son really enjoyed the classes. Gave him something to look forward to!! Teachers a kind and patient.
The entire staff was geared to help , which then is picked up by the students and makes for a very welcoming experience
My daughter and I joined Gracie Barra going on two months, it has been a great experience. We have zero experience but are learning. My daughter was already in great athlete shape, me not so much but after joining I am getting there. The instructors have been great as well as the other members of the class. It is great for all ages. I see members anywhere from 50 + to 4 years old male and female. The instructors manage to be able to get full attention to everyone. the atmosphere is very friendly and helpful. I can honestly say this is not an attempt to just get you signed up to make a buck, they do not want you paying and not training. I am very particular with any ratings or don't bother because it is a waste of time however I highly recommend this for anyone at any age. For you that may be a bit older I would like you to remember you don't quit playing because you get old you get old because you quit playing. Have a great day! Don Lewis
We love Gracie Barra ....Coach Mai and professor Jim are great!
This is a great place to learn jiujitsu! The atmosphere is light and friendly and anyone of any age or background is welcomed with open arms. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area to give it a shot!
The best instructor/instruction in the state. Burchfield is the real deal
Friendly Staff and very Knowledgeable in martial arts. 2 thumbs up.
I trained BJJ and Muy thai for many months, loved taking the classes. Trainers are educated and helpful, unfortunately due to work had to cancel membership but learned a ton while I was there! Affordable and flexible, recommend to those looking for a good place to learn the sport!

Started there with my 5yr old son who “wanted to take ninja classes” They treated him like a king and made him feel very special. They even talked me into some classes. Great gym, great people! All ages and skill levels welcomed and encouraged!
I have been going here for a few months now, and I enjoy the staff that they have there. There friendly, and Jim one of the owners are very interactive and engaging with teaching the classes. His dedication to making sure we understand the fundamentals of Jiu jitsu are great!
I’m training kickboxing and bjj almost 1 year and I will continue on here for years to come.
I have been training here for close to a year now and I can honestly say it has changed my life and definitely for the better. Jim the professor and all the coaches are awesome they are all very experienced and make sure everyone understands everything while teaching. The people here are amazing too it’s everyone here wants to see everyone else excel. 10/10 Recommend!
I have been training at Gracie Barra Burton for almost 1 1/2. The coaches and students have made me feel welcome and comfortable from day one. It’s a fun and relaxed class with great coaches and students. I couldn’t recommend it more.
I have been training here for the last month or so and have thoroughly enjoyed each and every class that I attended. The instructors are very knowledgeable and make sure everyone has a good training session in addition to being included in class.
Well organized school with patient teachers who care about the students progress and ensure development on all levels! Well worth the time and effort that it takes to train!
I have trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Gracie Barra Burton off and on for nearly four years. To a person, everyone who coaches there is professional, helpful, friendly, and positive, which is a direct reflection of gym owner and head instructor Professor Jim Burchfield. I have struggled with athletic endeavors my entire life; to say that I am not a natural at BJJ would be putting it mildly. I cannot walk through my own home on a given day without walking into stationary objects, and so watching me do martial arts is a bit like watching a drunken monkey attempt to don a suit, tie, and wingtips. However, not a single person there has ever been less than helpful and encouraging, even when showing me how to do a scissor sweep for the fortieth time. In addition, as one of the few women who trains at GBB, I can happily say that no one has ever made me feel unwelcome due to my gender, and I have never been subjected to inappropriate behavior or “locker room talk” on the part of any of my male peers. At GBB, you will be getting good quality instruction in an exciting, intense martial art, in a safe space where you will be allowed room to grow, challenge yourself, fail, get back up, try again, succeed, and then wake up the next day and do it all over again. Isn’t that what martial arts—and life—is all about?
I’ve been training at Gracie Barra Burton for over 3 years now and it has changed my life. Professor Jim Burchfield is an excellent instructor and everyone that trains here is friendly and helpful. The positive atmosphere and great workout you get when you train is addicting and I would recommend training here to everyone.
Only the 5th class for my kids, and I am loving the experience they are getting. Instructors are kind, but firm. They will help to understand movements(why and how to do them) but they will not tolerate slacking off, not paying attention in class. So far, I thoroughly recommend Gracie Barra Burton. Will update review with more time in.
I was there today and man it is good learning about different styles of martial arts and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai to great workout this will fit me
I have been training with Prof Burchfield since 1994. At that time he was teaching Hsing-I Kung Fu. He helped me overcome terrible back problems and build myself back to the person I was before my troubles started. I was there when he first started down his path learning Jiu-Jitsu. The road he travelled most people would never have the strength to go. Without an instructor locally to learn from, he literally travelled the world to train with some of the most accomplished practitioners in the world. Now associated with Gracie Barra and Flavio Almeida, Jim has developed the classroom structure to develop world class practitioners himself. If you want to train hard, get in shape, love competition, or just want to develop close knit friendships while getting some exercise, Gracie Barra is the place for you.
I have enjoyed many classes at this school including MMA, Muy Thai, Judo, Kung Fu, Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Kettle Bells, Bulgarian Bags, and Olympic Lifting.
It was alright... 30 day free trial but you won't hear about that over them tryna get your card information.
The professor is gone to Thailand "training" with his girlfriend for 3 months out of the year. The coaches are highly inexperienced in Jiu-Jitsu and coaching. Very political between Jim and Tom. Jim is the owner but puts responsibilities on Tom who never has authority to make decisions. That's the cycle I found myself in. The professor has 2 clubs and was never at the Burton location. I was a member for 2 months and only met Jim inside the gym on 1 occasion. The turnover rate for the coaches in insane. I was a member for 2 weeks and a white belt before I was approached about coaching. I bought into the Gracie name and that was my mistake. That gym does not function like a gym.
The instructors are great and helpful, but the business owners here are very poor with general customer service and professionalism. The two business owners are rarely on the same page. We were waiting for our Gi's to be delivered for over 5 months. I moved away and it has been a YEAR and I still haven't received a call or notification that the Gi has come in (it was also way over priced). Every practice we were constantly in loaners.
Out for money, that is all. It’s funny how random policies pop up to keep you paying top dollar as long as they can squeeze it out of you. Haven’t gone back since a terrible experience with an inexperienced practice partner - coaches should know better and pair students appropriately. I left feeling unsafe. Now canceling is a total joke - just don’t waste your time.
Bad business practice. DO NOT go to this gym. They are charging a ridiculous amount for what i now know i sub par programs. They fail to tell you about how the memberships are even cancelled. I would not waste another penny with GBB.
Absolute clown show. I come in to check them out, i have been training for years but i didnt tell them that. I watched, we talked, very poor quality instructors, very little experience. The over weight guy that runs the place doesnt even know what he is talking about most of the time. He pushed super hard to get money out of me right there on the spot. They want twice the money of what anywhere else wants. Poor way to represent the Gracie name......sad
