I'd say Freestyle has the most high-level instructors I have ever come across at a gym. It's also a super friendly space. What I really love about this gym is that, in addition to receiving some of the best self defense instruction I've ever received, you quickly find out that the coaches genuinely care about making you a more well-rounded person, i.e. I find myself acquiring a lot of great and useful adjacent life skills that go beyond martial arts training. —Thanks so much to the coaches, Gage, Sean, Graeme and Steven
Awesome gym space with attentive and patient coaching for both gi and no gi practitioners. The boxing and kickboxing coaches also run great programs and add even more value to the gym environment as a whole. Large mat space, multiple washrooms/showers and other amenities in the workout/weights area!
Freestyle Dojo is an amazing gym with a great atmosphere and welcoming people. The coaches are knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely care about helping you improve and become better every day. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced martial artist, everyone makes you feel welcome and pushes you to reach your potential. The BJJ classes are great, and I've already noticed myself improving since I started training. If you're looking to learn martial arts, build confidence, get in shape, and be part of a solid community, I highly recommend Freestyle Dojo. Definitely one of the best places to train!
Great gym, great coaches . We love the space and the passion at the gym is infectious! Range of training is good for beginners and higher level competitors. Love the reverse osmosis filter !
Awesome Staff, Very professional. The technique's I learn are very practical. Safe environment for beginners and advance belts. I recommend for anyone wanting to learn BJJ and wanting to push there physical to the next level.
Omg, genuinely love this gym ! Been looking for a new consistent gym to train at and I absolutely found it! I saw a lot of comments about a recent change in coaching so I was a little hesitant but they have a couple really good striking coaches and really good grappling coaches. I think this is a great gym for competitors and casuals alike ! Definitely becoming a full time member of this gym ! Thank you guys for the training !
Practiced jiujitsu and mma for 5 plus years. I can say this is a fantastic gym space , spacious with great mats ! As one of the only people who trained under freestyles old coaching and now their new coaching staff. I’ve enjoyed every experience at this gym. Great open mats. Instructors are well versed and passionate ! And I look forward to continuing here now more than ever ! One of the new coaches Sean Leal has already helped me immensely and is incredibly knowledgeable, providing excellent advice for training, recovery and mental health. Id recommend this gym for any newcomer but also any current competitor !
My 9 year old trained at Freestyle Dojo for 2 years, and I dropped by for the odd class and open mat myself ever since they opened in 2021. I have nothing but good things to say about the gym under its original leadership. Coach Mike Romano built something special - a genuinely welcoming gym, with a great sense of community, and a really well-run kids program. I myself have been training for well over a decade, and I always felt the coaching was skilled, safe, and age-appropriate. Earlier this year, Mike left the gym and new coaching staff took over. Unfortunately, the quality of instruction, not to mention the vibe of the gym, changed a lot. Not for the better. I personally witnessed the new staff teaching my son techniques in ways that were not properly controlled and put him at real risk of injury. Because of this, we left the gym. If you're considering signing your kids up for classes, know that the gym is under new management, and delivers a very different program than the one that built its reputation. I'd encourage all parents to observe a class closely before enrolling. And know that jiu jitsu should be fun. It doesn't have to be about being the toughest one on the mats. We loved this gym once. We just don't recognize it anymore.
I have trained at many gyms across the US and Ontario. I have never experienced a community or the care for coaching that I did from Mike and Jesse. They truly made me fall deeper in love with a martial arts that I was already obsessed with. Unfortunately they are no longer part of this gym that they built and I would not recommend supporting the new management/owners as the transition has been abrupt, poorly handled, and spells bad things to come. It is a shame that this great gym that I called my home had to end in this way but that is just how it is sometimes.
Freestyle Dojo used to be a standout gym with a real sense of identity and community, largely driven by Mike's leadership. As of today, he is no longer involved, and that alone completely changes what this place is. From a member perspective, the way this was handled was abrupt, disrespectful, manipulative, and poorly thought out. Rather than diplomatically working things out in an effort to not destroy the community, Mike was relieved. The focus shifted more toward extracting profit from a business that already operates on thin margins rather than maintaining what made the gym special. The current Ownership is more focused on control and internal decisions than on the people and culture that built the gym in the first place. Replacing Mike so quickly with someone from within the community who has mixed support raises concerns about judgment and overall direction. Given the recent history and relationships involved, the move feels uncomfortable to many members. The atmosphere now feels unsettled, and the current leadership does not inspire much confidence. Based on how this has played out, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Mike IS Freestyle Dojo.
