Very welcoming to beginners. I was nervous entering a new environment to take on a new activity but it’s a friendly group with no egos that I saw. Mark took the time to try and get around everyone during the sessions. His passion and expertise is evident. Straightforward flexible membership which is great.
Posted 11 months agoThis just appeared on my feed. I went there a couple of years ago after a fellow lecturer at the Uni highly recommended this place. I was very excited to join, and even booked a couple of private lessons on Sundays. The instructor (Monkey) is very skilled, but kept making snarky comments about me to other members. I am all for banter but I was new and not knowing my way around yet. The point when I decided to leave is when I was trying a move with another guy and Monkey pointed at me and said: "doesn't he look like so and so?", and the other guy felt weird about it tbh... I googled the name he mentioned and it turned out to be some flamboyant actor from the 60s...I left and did not come back. Pretty sure he has his crowd that will vouch for him as a cool and helpful guy, but I really felt uncomfortable there. This is my experience. Probably if I were a native English things would have been easier for me. I wish everyone there well, but a bit manners go a long way.
Posted 8 months agoA friendly & welcoming club just off Ecclesall Road, high level instruction provided by an experienced & knowledgeable instructor. Great team of varied rank & experience. Everyone welcome and made to feel at home from beginners to competitors, students from other teams welcome. No uniform policy. Change your life for the better at Fortify BJJ. Be a part of the team! Posted 2 years agoMark is one of the best coaches I’ve ever worked with. Having done various sports all my life, and a lot of the times being only one of a handful of girls, Mark has made me feel the most welcome whilst in a martial arts environment that I ever have. There is a philosophy at the gym that everyone is welcome and that is certainly true. There is a real sense of wanting people to progress not only inside the gym but outside aswell which makes about a very welcoming troop of people. If you’re a female reading this review and you’re wanting to try BJJ, but your struggling for confidence to start, then Fortify is the perfect place.
Posted 3 years agoFortify is an excellent place to learn and improve your BJJ. Having trained at an excellent gym elsewhere in the UK I wasn't confident that I'd be able to find a good one in Sheffield. Having gone for several weeks I'm really pleased to have found Fortify. Everyone has been really helpful and friendly. Mark has gone above and beyond to help and support me which i'm massively appreciative of. The level of instruction is demonstrated by the quality of the students; people much smaller than me who've only started in recent months are already very effective and humble me! Thanks to all for the teaching and rolls so far.
