Few gyms make you feel like family on day one—Excel Jiu Jitsu does! I’ve dropped in twice now (once back in April and again today), at different times with different instructors, and every class has been friendly, welcoming, and full of great learning. Even the kids’ camp happening when I arrived today looked like an awesome experience. This will be my training home anytime I’m in Oceanside!

Best gym I've ever trained at. Everyone from the professors to the coaches and teammates they all are amazing it's like family. If you wanna learn jiu-jitsu with great details this is the place to come .

This is an excellent gym, would highly recommend that you check it out. It’s a very clean gym with a large amount of mat space. Professor Michio has done an excellent job fostering a very family friendly and welcoming environment. The instruction is excellent and very detail oriented with Professor Michio being a 4th degree black belt under the legendary Chris Haueter. The gym’s schedule is hard to beat with classes 7 days a week and classes offered morning, afternoon and evening. There are a wide variety of programs offered from gi and no gi BJJ, MMA, boxing, fitness and yoga. The skill level in the BJJ classes is perfect for improving your skills with a good mix of beginner and advanced practitioners. Finally, it is refreshing to train at a gym where you can wear whatever gi you want and don’t have to wear the gym gi or a white gi only. Having trained at a plethora of gyms over the last 11 years, EXCEL is the cream of the crop. Come give it a try if you are interested in BJJ, martial arts or self defense.

I just started going here with my kids and we love it. The instructors are very welcoming from MMA classes to jiu jitsu. This is the best place to train if you're in Oceanside!

I have been training at Excel for about 2 years now and i got to say that i always have had a great experience on every single training. You always go back home knowing that i learned something new, had fun and released some steam. The Professors are all very knowledgeable and patient in teaching the gentle art. For anybody thinking in starting on learning a new martial art or keep going on your journey this is the place. They also teach boxing and mixed martial arts if interested. Fantastic place! 👍 👌 🤙

Awesome place to learn a variety of martial arts!! Boxing? They got you! Kick boxing? They got you! MMA? They got you! BJJ (no-gi & gi)? You best believe they got you! Not only that, the facilities are clean and well taken care of! Complete with bathrooms and changing room, if needed. Michio, owner and head coach, goes above and beyond in fostering a positive learning environment that are boths challenging and family friendly. All the coaches are great and you will not go wrong coming here.

Our 4 kids have grown tremendously at Excel in both their jui jitsu skills and life/work ethic over the past year. We absolutely love the family atmosphere and all are made to feel welcome here. Invaluable life lessons are taught daily and a strong work ethic is infused into each lesson. LOVE our Excel family and gym!

Great place to train in Jiu Jitsu and learn some boxing skills as well! The people friendly and are there to help you grow as much you'd like to in any discipline, but they will not force you to do anything. They teach about having the right mindset and not making it about emotions which I believe is essential. Hearing the testimonies of people that have been going there for years was refreshing! Training there helped people not just physically, but mentally. Not just Excel in training, but Excel in their life! This is a great community to be apart of.

My daughter wanted to try out Jiu jitsu and boxing so we decided to go check out Excel. Everyone was so welcoming and knowledgeable. She was enjoying it so much we all decided to join. I couldn’t ask for a better place to train and call my second home. Really a great family community.

Very friendly and welcoming which is what a beginner needs to feel comfortable taking those first leaps into jiu jitsu. Michio is a great professor and you can tell he really cares about keeping the "jiu jitsu family" safe from injuries in class. I've been to other gyms that focus on being tough physically, but Michio focuses on being mentally tough, which is more important when getting into any altercation. It is obvious his patience and friendliness has rubbed off on his higher belt students because they are all willing to teach instead of tapping all the lower belts. He brings a presence of learning better technique instead of muscling through the opponent. I am very happy to be in class everyday and even when I get small injuries I want to be back in class the next day. Kidd at the front desk is welcoming and has a smile on her face everyday I walk in. She will take care of you and make sure you have everything you need to begin your first class. I love being a student of Excel and will continue showing up because they provide all of the tools necessary to earn the black belt I'm pushing towards.

Excel is a highly professional, family friendly academy offering first class instruction. My three older kids and I all take classes at here and have been impressed since day one. My kids used to train at a different academy for about a year, however; in the few weeks we've been at Excel I have seen an improvement. I credit this improvement to how well Professor Michio and his instructors explain and break down every technique.

I’ve been training here for about 3 years and I feel like this place is my second home. It is a safe, clean environment to train in and the Coaching staff works great with all skill levels. They offer many different options from beginner to advanced. Come try it out for yourself and see!

My family of five has been training at Excel for almost 6 years now and it has become like a second home to us. Professor Michio and Kidd treat everyone with respect, and like an extended family. I can’t say enough great things about Excel Jiu Jitsu MMA and Fitness. If you are looking for a gym with great culture, that has fantastic coaches and instructors, where you can get in shape and learn the most effective martial art in the world, along with other disciplines...come give them a try! I have no doubt this will be your place!

Couldn't rate Excel any higher. Quality of Instruction - Subconsciously I may have never written this review before because Excel was such a gem to me, for the past 4 years, and I didn't want my amazing venue to get swarmed. Michio Grubbs may be the John Danaher of the west coast. His attention to detail and focus on the subtleties of BJJ are very uncharacteristic for a formal IFBB bodybuilder who could probably muscle every technique if he wanted to. Even in his fundamentals of BJJ classes you can always pick up details that solidify your foundation and make you question if you really knew the technique at all. Family- Excel is truly a family oriented business. The kids program is well done, the kids truly have a great time doing it and gain a great deal of self confidence. Michio and the community will even go out of the way to host things for kids outside of martial arts like the "kids leadership workshop" with "Topics to be covered; 1) Self-Defense tactics 2) Anti-Bullying 3) Goal Setting for kids." There is a solid female crowd and a couple women only classes that are great. Excel is not a place to go in like a big meat-head and try to crush people. There are definitely top level MMA guys like Ray Sloan Belator fighter, Joseph Williams, #1 155lb fighter in the west coast amateurs, and Djavan Coleman who could be the most talented BJJ guy there. With that being said though, it is not a 'Kill or be killed, only the strong survive' crowd. It is a 'If you get better, the room gets better, we all get better' type of place. Professionalism, Michio and his wife Kidd run a top notch undercover program. There are classes and events going all the time and whether your available mornings, afternoons, or evenings there are opportunities for you.

Both my boys started jiu jitsu at ages 5 and 4. Both are now 8 and 6 and are still growing in their knowledge of this gentle art. I got the bug and started back in May. We all trained at another academy in Oceanside and we are shocked at how much better Excel is! A great “mom and pop shop” here in Oside for sure. Professor Michio and Coach Kidd are awesome with the kids because they also have a child in their program. They have the utmost patience and will never react negatively toward a child. If you have kids and are looking for a quality program choose Excel! I can say with complete confidence my children have great role models now to continue on their jiu jitsu journey. Excel has Gi, No Gi, Family Gi, takedown and boxing classes as well as seminars to expand on certain concepts to help build up your arsenal. Everyone here is friendly and helpful at guiding you to learn concepts and get your reps in correctly. Free 3 day trial to see if it works for you or your kids. Great thing too is your allowed to watch the classes and watch your kids grow!

I highly recommend Excel Jiu Jitsu and mixed martial arts. Michio and his staff are amazing and provide a family friendly atmosphere. Excel teaches not just Jiu Jitsu and mixed martial arts but instills confidence, discipline and focus as well as honor, personal and family values, good work ethics, respect and integrity. It is a pleasure to look out on his classes and observe a sea of smiling faces. It's obvious his students are genuinely having fun while learning.

If you are searching for a place to train for yourself or your family, this is the best place to go. I have trained at different gyms over my years and this is by far the best place that I have ever trained at. It is the valuable knowledge that is passed by Professor Michio Grubbs and his coaching staff that sets them apart from everyone else in the BJJ/MMA community. My children and myself found this place to be a perfect fit for us. The EGO is left at the door by everyone and because of this, are able to receive high value training that assist's in whichever path on the Jiu Jitsu journey your taking. The training here with the guidance of Professor Grubbs, his staff, and my team mates has escalated my level of jiu jitsu to a level I did not think I would get to as I get older. The flow of the gym is always a positive one, no matter how your day has been. Everyone here feels like family and we all want to help each other in our separate goals. If you want to get better in BJJ, MMA, or Boxing, look no further because this is a place where you will without a doubt, get the knowledge that will follow you for years to come. I was introduced to Jiu Jitsu by a friend of mine New York a year ago and this is my first gym. Professor Michio does a great job in breaking down techniques for all belt levels. He installs a working/ friendly environment for all ages that parents and highly competitive Jiu jitsu grapplers love and enjoy. When I first arrived at EXCEL I thought it was just Jiu-Jitsu, but the Professor has expanded his gym into MMA, Boxing, Strenth and Conditioning, and JUDO classes. This is great for military personnel working in the Camp Pendleton area - as we get a lot of members. Come out!

A friend introduced me to Excel a few years ago. I am glad he did. This is a great place to learn and be challenged. The instruction is amazing. The environment is clean, competitive, and supportive. The upper belts are always willing to help. It is a top down team attitude Professor Michio has instilled.

It's a great atmosphere for training, getting in shape, and having fun. No egos, no hidden agendas, just good training with great people and learning great techniques!

Coming from a personal training and wrestling background this is hands down the best place to train in North County. The fitness classes will get you ripped. Full of functional training and crazy core workouts. I also train Jiu Jitsu and couldn't be more impressed. Including world-class instructors, friendly training atmosphere and available classes for every experience level. I highly recommend taking a free class and finding out for yourself.
