Unending knowledge of jiu jitsu, and how to teach it. Been here for over a year and couldn’t think of going anywhere else! Jr will not only become the best coach you’ve ever had but close family. You couldn’t ask for a better more supporting community either this place has it all!!!

All of my 6 children train here! Not just self defense but a wonderful mentorship! They are so great with children. My youngest is 4 and this is the best place to train with family.

After one year of attending on a regular basis and speaking to many people, I can honestly say that this is the only school in the area that you should consider going to. You’re not gonna get water down lessons and techniques. Just wait the time to truly learn from a great team and you’re not gonna find a better professor around. Everything is very affordable you are not gonna see the standard corporate money grab that so many martial arts schools have become. Come here have fun, create good habits

Besides all the wonderful benefits from exercising, You receive world-class instruction. Checkmat Portland is a supportive community that encourage personal growth for all ages. I am 63 year old Blue Belt. I can't say enough good things about Junior our Professor and the academy he operates.

After our first 2 free classes, my son and I were hooked! Great family atmosphere, very clean and everyone is super friendly! I tried several gyms before and this place is the BEST! Incredibly patient, world class instructors. Morning, evening and weekend classes. Gi and no-gi, kids and teens/adult classes. Definitely worth a try if you're thinking of a martial art for yourself or your child and FAR more practical than TaeKwonDo or Karate.
