Checkmat Corona BJJ is a great place to learn jujitsu. The people there are welcoming, humble, and respectful. I haven't had any issues. Didn't know what to expect, having it being my first time learning this art but professor Jimmy is a awesome instructor and down to earth. I recommend that you check out this place for yourself. The pricing is more competitive/affordable than other BJJ places.

I joined Checkmat last August and I’m happy with that decision. From the first day there Jimmy has been welcoming and professional running his academy. Jimmy is a skilled Black Belt and also an active competitor. When selecting an Academy I wanted to train where I would be surrounded by active competitors and feel a part of a team. Since joining my skills and technique has improved. Overall one of the best places to train.

I love Checkmat in Corona, they are a top notch jiu jitsu school. They run a great kids and adults program. Jimmy Tat and his wife Cindy run a very family oriented and friendly program. I felt very welcomed to their school from day one. They were extremely friendly and embraced me and my family when I first visited them 5 years ago. I felt very safe while I was there and professor Jimmy had so much knowledge and experience in jiu jitsu. You would seriously being making a mistake to train anywhere else than at checkmat in Corona. After reviewing a couple academy’s online for my family to call home I came across Professor Tat’s page . From the phone call to the first meet and greet was very professional and welcoming . Take note he offers an awesome 30 day free trial to all his new students. After the first week me and my daughter joined, we drive a 50 mile commute round trip to train here. I can’t see myself training anywhere else but Check Mat Corona.
I've been training at Checkmat Corona with Professor Jimmy for about 6 months now, and I can honestly say the gym feels like a second home to me. Everyone one there is respectful of each other, and the instructors will gladly answer questions if you're not clear on how to do something. The higher ranking belts are just as helpful as the professors, and will help you through your sparing sessions, giving you pointers on how to improve. The kids' classes are also great. My nine-year-old son loves BJJ, (he tried soccer, baseball, and Taw Kwon Do prior to BJJ). All the coaches are extremely patient, and take time to explain the techniques, instilling in the children a sense of confidence and self-discipline as they train. Whether you're just looking to learn self defense, or you have aspirations of competing at a high level, this is the place to go.
Professor Jimmy is top notch when it comes to his technique and very detailed. He is also very welcoming and sets good vibes for his gym. If I lived near corona, I would have definitely made this place my home gym. Keep up the good work professor!

Checkmate Corona is hands down the best gym around. Not only does it train elite athletes, it feels like a family. I have nothing but love and respect for gym that Jimmy Tat has created. I have witnessed people's lives transformed in so many different ways. There have been people that have lost weight. There have been people that have become top notch competitors from just trying the sport out with Jimmy.
My personal experience with Jimmy and the gym was nothing but amazing. Whether it comes to the training or people, you can't compare what you get from here. The first time I trained at this gym I fell in love with the sport. I am a pretty big guy and I was tapped out by a 12 year old girl so I immediately saw the potential of Jiu jitsu(as well as being embarrassed 😝). On top of that, Jimmy is so enthusiastic and patient. After training for a while I began to know Jimmy personally and that he has a heart of gold. I was going through a very difficult time in my life and not only was the family culture of the gym a welcome escape from my personal issues, but knowing Jimmy personally, he went above and beyond the call of duty and really took time as a friend to help me through my hard time. I have never felt so welcome in any establishment, bjj or otherwise.
Overall, I highly recommend this gym. Who knows, it may just change your life! It certainly has changed mine.

One of the best places to train at whatever level you are at. Jimmy will guide you and teach you according to your needs doesn't matter if you are a 300 lbs guy o 120 lbs guy you will learn and roll
Checkmat is amazing. I am so happy that we decided to join a year ago for our son. Professor Jimmy is fantastic with the kids and the kids all look up to him with respect and admiration. Our son can't stop taking about him and asks everyday of its a Jitsu day. The other Coaches that assist with the kids class are great and are always therr to help out.
The professionalism with the team is fantastic, we are there 3-4 nights a week and anytime someone new walks into the door the professor acknowledges yhen and heads to great them as soon as it is safe to do so.
We can't wait for many more years here with this team and especially Professor Jimmy. He really makes it feel like home.

As a traveling nurse I've been to quite a few gyms which has allowed me to experience many good and sometimes bad experiences. The first time I visited Checkmate Corona, I felt welcomed, included, and treated like part of the gym family. Jimmy and everyone at Checkmate Corona were beyond welcoming and laid back. Jimmy is one of the most invested black belts that I have met, staying after class to roll with whoever needs it and offering his knowledge and input freely. This gym is honestly the only gym that I have felt "at home" at besides my home gym in AZ. If I lived in the IE permanently, I would make this my gym...highly highly recommend!
One of the better jiu jitsu places to train. I been to several gyms around the area and this one is definitely the cream of the crop. Jimmy is a thoughtful and knowledgeable coach who not only teaches, but also competes at the highest level. Everyone, the staff and fellow gym members are all about good vibes and positivity.

This is a great place to train. No doubt about it. I have been training here for many years now and all I can honestly say is that Professor Jimmy have tons of experience and knowledge in jujitsu and is also a bemedalled jujitsuka competing in a lot of high level BJJ tournaments. Same is true with all the other black belt professors, all high level, teaching at Checkmat corona. They’re all very friendly and welcoming specially to newcomers. I actually came from a different academy and just transferred here since this is closest to my home. Professor J accepted and welcomed me with open arms. Such a humble and great guy and he rolls with everyone. He always lends a helping hand if you want to improve your technique and he does so by breaking down the technique down to the nitty-gritty details. I have improved my jujitsu game when I came here. All the other guys at the academy are also friendly and humble, willing to help at a moment’s notice. You can’t go wrong training here. If you want to be the best that you can be in your jujitsu, this is the place you wanna go to. I can’t wait to get back when this pandemic is over. Looking forward to train with these guys again knowing that Checkmat corona will always be there for me. Hell, if I can give 6 stars I would, but the maximum is only 5.;)
Checkmat Corona is such an amazing gym! I highly highly recommend to any one who wants to get into into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or wants to pick it back up again.They have amazing instructors and they gym feels like one big family.The owners are so kind and they truly care about every single one of their members.

My son has been training at this gym for a few months, from the moment I walked it I was greeted a smile and a waiver so he could participate in the class. I am new to the Jiu Jitsu community and everyone has been so nice and kind even when my son was struggling with something simple as tying his belt another parent or instructor would help him. I am so glad that I found this place, my son loves it and needed this outlet!
Well I really don’t know what those last 4 1 star fake reviews are all about, they must be confused about what gym they went to or they’re re just haters from the competition 🤔. It’s a little suspicious that all of those comments were post Ted about the same time🤔..... All I can say is that Checkmat Corona is different from than other gyms. Checkmat Corona has a chill & relax atmosphere, we train hard have fun and create champions in the process. The dedication and respect that the Profesor and coaches show the members is the best. They are all friendly and respectful to everyone from current members to new members and visiting Jiu-Jitsu brothers. My daughter and I have been training At Checkmat Corona for over 5 year under Jimmy Tat and we love it. I can honestly say that Checkmat Corona is my second home and all my fellow BJJ brothers and sisters are my family. I have never seen any of the staff be rude of disrespectful to anyone ever. I had never trained any martial art before, but I made a New Years resolution this year to learn one. My friend told me about Checkmat BJJ so I decided to check it out. When I called professor Jimmy was really friendly and he invited me to come to class the following week and told me I could try it out for a month for free! I was really nervous but everyone was so nice and willing to help me learn. After attending a week of classes, I decided to sign up. I’ve been going for just over 2 months now and I already feel like I’m part of the Checkmat family. I’ve made so many new friends and I’ve learned so much. Whenever I’m struggling to learn a new technique, there is always a coach there to help guide and encourage me. I’d recommend anyone who is considering jiu jitsu to come to Checkmat Corona!
Checkmat is a great gym! Coach Jimmy and all of the other instructors are awesome. Our son has been going here for years and he/we love it. They take pride in taking great care of the facility, especially since COVID, they do a great job keeping the facility clean and following all precautions. Most importantly, they treat everyone like family, which is the kind of environment I want my son to be a part of.
I’ve been training with Professor Jimmy since 2017. This gym is top notch from the top down. My son is also in the kids program. Professor Jimmy welcomes everyone that walks through the door regardless if you’re new to JiuJitsu or bring your experience from another gym. I recommend this gym to everyone.
My son love Coach Jimmy. He always has so much fun in his classes. Riley has taken a break for now from training but we will be back. We love Checkmate Corona. I have traveled the IE looking for the best BJJ professor/coach. I visited at least 8 different gyms. Trust me if u want to be a champion like myself. Corona CHECKMAT is the place to learn. Under Coach Jimmy my record is 64 wins and only 2 loses by points.
I've been training Jiu Jitsu for 7 years now under The Checkmat affiliation. I did have a short run with Ralph Gracie in Chino Hills under Sean Roberts, another great School and Professor. That being said Checkmat is home though, and Through Checkmat I trained under some of the great blackbelts like Marcus Buchecha and Marcelo Mafra but do to personal situations I had to take a break from Jiu Jitsu. When I moved back from Northern Califronia I was in need of a academy to train at. Jimmy Tat was brought to my attention by another one of my Checkmat training partners, so I checked it out and already I felt at home, Jimmy is a great instructor but that's an understatement to his teachings and culture of the academy. The Acedemy is still young only being open for a year or so but it's a growing Acedemy that will soon make its mark in the jiu jitsu community. With that being said Checkmat, Corona/ Jimmy Tat bjj is a awesome place to train with great people. We are Checkmat, we are family and in this family iron sharpens iron.
I was looking to add BJJ to my workout and was lucky enough that Professor Jimmy Tat opened his school in a time slot just before my Krav Maga class. Professor Tat invited me to workout with his class and I immediately found that I was hooked by his teaching style. He is open, friendly and creates a team atmosphere that helps everyone get better.
I've been training with Prof. Tat for less than a year now. When I started, I was 330lbs. and I am currently at 270lbs. Achieving this in 6 months is a HUGE accomplishment. But with Prof. Tat's help, it has seemed effortless. My life has literally changed, I started training because a friend of mine asked me to go with him; little did I expect to fall in love so much with the sport. I think that has to do a lot with making the weight loss effortless. I continue to train hard because I want to get better at the art, which in turn just attributes to more weight loss. It's a win-win. I've visited other academies and their curriculum felt more like boot camps; Prof. Tat understands and encourages us to listen to our bodies while still positively-pushing us. Jiu-Jitsu is for EVERYBODY. Professor Tat embodies this mantra, and we encourage everybody to come down and train with us!
I have always trained down in Orange County and was lucky enough to come across Professor Tat. After training with him for awhile, I was able to explore different played styles and step up my game as I started to shake the rust.
I was sadden to hear that Jimmy was leaving to open up his own school. Not until he gave word that it was going to be in Corona. Just a couple minutes from home.The school is local and convenient near all the main streets off the 91 freeway. The team is always welcoming.

Tried to bring my daughter here but was not greeted by the friendliest staff. It seemed that they cared more about their sparring then serving their customers. Overall not an experience I would recommended to anyone. Theres a better jiu jitsu across the street that is more friendly than these guys
Bad service went there and was rudely greeted by the instructor who didn't seem to care that I was new. Asked if I would be able to participate in class but was denied. Overall terrible experience would not recommended
