Checkmat Charlotte has a great atmosphere and Michael breaks down each move so that everyone can understand and practice safely. I did a lot of research before deciding to join Checkmat Charlotte and was nervous about trying something new, but as soon as I arrived everyone made me feel so welcome. As a woman, I love that there is a sizable female representation at Checkmat Charlotte. You can expect to work hard and improve, as well as have fun and become part of a great community. Update: I wrote the above review after about a month of training. I have been training here two years now and am so grateful that this is the school I chose out of the many in Charlotte. I have gained so much from my experience training here and will continue to recommend it to anyone and everyone. Update: I have trained at Checkmat Charlotte for 6 years - I went from white to black belt in that time and became a world champion. I firmly stand by saying Michael Allen is one of the most talented Jiu Jitsu coaches in the country.

I recently visited Checkmat Charlotte from California, and I couldn't have been more impressed. The atmosphere is extremely welcoming. It makes it easy for both beginners and experienced practitioners to feel at home. Michael Allen, the instructor, was outstanding—his knowledge and passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu really stood out. He provided personalized guidance that helped me improve my skills during my visit. I hope to be back in Charlotte at some point to train here again. Hands down the most welcoming gym I have ever been to.

I was able to stop in for a couple classes while on a trip for work and had a great experience. Coach Michael got back to me very quickly and invited me in to train on short notice in what is a very talented room with detailed instruction, kind training partners, and overall a welcoming environment. To anyone in the Charlotte area I cannot recommend Checkmat Charlotte enough. I hope to get the chance to train here again!

We came to Charlotte visiting family for a few weeks this summer. My daughter’s coach in Phoenix recommended Checkmat Charlotte. I sent an email to Micheal sharing that I’d like my daughter to come to class a few times to get some reps in over the summer. I planned to call as we expected a delayed response. In less than 24 hours Michael responded with options for my 11 year old to get practice in. We texted and made a game plan based on the schedule. The drive was quite far from my family’s home so we opted for the 6am option to beat the traffic (I know 😴!). It was so worth the drive! My daughter was able to spar for an hour and apply what she’s been learning with a few students that are yellow belts or higher and specifically an 11 year old that Micheal asked to come in (VERY EARLY!) ensuring she could practice with someone her age. The student was very skilled. Michael provided my daughter live feedback and coaching as she sparred helping to connect the dots to the skills and techniques she’s been learning back at Checkmat in Phoenix. She was not happy on our 40 min drive to class but felt inspired and confident as we drove home. We came back today (June 14) and she was able to practice with Michael’s son who is a little older and a higher belt. She again got in an hour of sparring and received tips and strategies on a few areas she’s been struggling with. Just two hours of sparring at Checkmat Charlotte and I believe my daughter will go back ready to compete and give her teammates back in Phoenix a run for their money! We will definitely be back on our next extended visit to Charlotte. We’re trying to convince my niece to join!

My husband and I were in Charlotte visiting as we are preparing to move there next year. We planned on visiting a number of gyms while we were there but after one class at Checkmat we did not need to go anywhere else. Professor Allen could not have been more helpful and welcoming along with his entire team. Everyone was friendly and made us feel like part of the gym from the very first day. The only thing better than the hospitality we received was the level of competition. There was no wasted time or rounds and we loved every minute of it. Checkmate Charlotte is awesome! Coach Michael and the rest of the professors are amazing instructors who have developed an inviting and detail oriented culture that supports growth and learning. The members at Checkmat help foster a strong sense of community, everyone is kind and inviting. Everyone keeps everyone’s safety of paramount importance and higher belts will adjust accordingly to skill level and desired intensity. Including all things warm and welcoming most everyone is ready to roll at whatever intensity you desire. Classes and individuals rolls can get intense but it never crosses the line. It’s healthy intensity and competitiveness that makes everyone in the gym better. BJJ is awesome and I would recommend Checkmat to anyone who is interested in trying it out.

Great place to learn BJJ. Classes provide the right balance between theory, light rolls to develop muscle memory, and live rolls to fully experience and apply learned techniques. Classes for all ages. Coach Allen addresses the questions and explains technical details about weight distribution, balance, body positioning, follow up steps etc. that are very important particularly for the beginners; and these are the details that beginners otherwise usually don’t pay attention to.

I was down in Charlotte for a couple of months and had the honor to come train at Checkmat Charlotte. Amazing group of people in this gym. Coach Michael facilitates a genuine welcoming environment. Everybody comes up to shake your hand before training and I thought that was such a great thing to show respect to everyone who steps foot on the mat there. The Queens class that they offer is strictly an all women’s class. This is great because it helps women of all ages feel more comfortable joining a sport that can be very intimidating. The Queens class is ran by Jill, who is an outstanding higher belt at Checkmat. She is very articulate and teaches a great class. Again, I am very honored to have trained at this gym for the short time I did. Michael has world class knowledge, and anybody who trains under him is extremely lucky to be under his tutelage. Much love to everybody on that team. Thank you for treating me like family! Hope to see you all in the near future. OSS!

I had been looking for a gym that felt welcoming and like someplace I could belong to and Checkmat Charlotte fit that bill. The coaches here are great and the upper belts are willing to help you learn along the way. I’ve been here for almost 6 months and can recommend this locations and its coaches any day of the week. Lots of flexibility in the schedule, and class size. I’ve competed in different sports mostly on my own and watching these guys compete on the mats, made it feel like a team sport unlike anything I’ve ever seen. They are a top tier team in all the local and regional competitions and the training shows that. As a beginner, i was welcomed and encouraged early on and 6 months later its still there. Even when we are getting our @ss kicked by coach 🤣. If you want to try Jiu Jitsu, this is a great place to start.

My family was referred to this gym as the best place to learn a martial art in our area, by a friend. My son has been attending beginner's classes since May 2022. He has shown great improvement in his overall fitness. It is amazing how much he has learned in such a short period of time. Professor Allen recognizes his student's potential and pushes them to their fullest ability. My son has gained confidence. Checkmat Charlotte is a wonderful program! Checkmat is organized into different categories; 4-6 year old, 7-13, adult women’s & men’s classes etc. Class times are catered to the age of the class. Also, they have certain weekends they host their house scrimmage matches that you can sign your child up for and have them experience live competition in a small safe fun environment with food, drinks, music & of course Ju Jitsu! Furthermore, I love the fact they give you a free trial when you are deciding on signing up to see if it is something you would like to do and grow as apart of their program. All of the instructors are very knowledgeable, kind and patient. Coach Allen was very informative, communicative, clear, friendly, and amazing from the start. Being new to Charlotte, it was great finding a diverse program for my 6year old that embodies a rich culture built on structure and discipline, while still making sure the kids enjoy themselves. Checkmat Charlotte is located in an accessible area, and the gym is intimate and kept up well. I highly recommend this program especially for your little ones!

I had a long layover in Charlotte. I googled bjj gyms in the area and glad I found this one. The owner and the team were very welcoming! I would definitely come again and train here whenever I come back to the city.

My daughter and I were in town for the holiday, and were looking for a place to train. Mike welcomed us into his school like we were family. Awesome atmosphere and great people. I can definitely see why he has such a great school. All of the guys I rolled were super technical and his son, Ed, was an absolute beast. Thank you so much. We will definitely be back. ⚙️🖤

I can't say enough good things about this place! Mr. Allen and his family did an awesome job accommodating my 4 year old son and making him feel comfortable and welcome throughout this trial process of learning a new form of Martial Arts. The length of time of the classes were perfect for his attention span and developmental level. Mr. Allen did a great job of following up with any questions that my wife and I may have had as parents trying to get a better understanding of the program and its implementation for our son's age level. We would provide more than 5 stars if We could!

I started Checkmat Charlotte the first week in NOV 2021. Started off as a conversation via phone with professor Michael. He was very friendly, knowledgeable and informative. A friend and I did the week trial, and Michael texted me a day before to let us know he looked forward to meeting us. I had never had anybody do that for me before, so it was a great sign. I've enjoyed my time with this phenomenal academy ever since, the students and coaches have been extremely helpful, respectful and friendly! I will continue to be a part of this team for as long as I can! It is well worth the time, drive and money! it's been a life changer! Thank you coach for welcoming me into your Jiujitsu family, and pushing me to be better and encouraging me! I look forward to learning more, competing more, being more, and doing more! 10/10 recommend!

I started attending BJJ classes at Checkmat Charlotte about 3 months ago and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. From the second I walked through those doors, I was immediately welcomed and embraced by Professor Michael, Professor Eddy and all of my fellow a Checkmat teammates who range from white belts to brown belts. Everyone I’ve come into contact with has been extremely respectful and more than willing to help me continue to progress on my BJJ journey. Professor Michael takes the time to teach you not only the mechanics of the techniques, but helps you understand all of the important little details and explains the “why” behind every movement. Training can be intense but classes are very safe and so much fun! Also, the gym is exceptionally clean and immaculately maintained. I genuinely look forward to going to classes every week and learning something new with every class. If you’ve ever thought about trying jiu jitsu or even learning self defense, this is the place for you. Give Professor Michael a call and come try out a class. I guarantee you that you will keep coming back 😊

My daughter has been attending Checkmat for roughly around 4 months. She loves it! It was the best decision ever! She needed to learn how to become more aggressive. We've noticed so much improvement from her by attending these classes. She's learned so much and the Professor's are extremely hands-on, helpful, encouraging and supportive! The atmosphere here is amazing. You will not have any regrets with your decision on enrollment at Checkmat! We are super pleased with our daughter's progress and we look forward to keeping her here for many years in the future. The staff is simply amazing super helpful and they really take their time educating the kids on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! So pleased with our decision to enroll our 7 year old daughter here!

Our 3 kids visited Charlotte and professor Michael was kind enough to allow them to train. Great quality instruction and discipline. The other kids we're very friendly and welcoming to all of them. If thinking about jiu jitsu in the Charlotte area, try Checkmat Charlotte. One of the best Jiu jitsu teams in the world. Your kids will have a great start in learning solid Jiu jitsu.

We’ve recently joined the Checkmat family and are loving it! Our 9 year learned so much even the first day and we’ve been really impressed with both the intense (but safe) curriculum and the hands on guidance by the professors during training. It’s been a very positive experience and my kid has his sights set on going very far in this discipline! Give Michael a call and he’ll get you started!

Joining Checkmat Charlotte was one of the best decisions I made this year! So far, my experience has been excellent. Coach Allen offers a variety of classes to cater to people’s skill level and schedule. He truly cares about the quality of instruction his student receive and he makes a huge effort to make sure everyone knows they’re part of the community and the Checkmat family. If you put in the time and work, you’ll benefit greatly from coach Allen’s classes and you’ll see improvements quickly!
