We came to Charlotte visiting family for a few weeks this summer. My daughter’s coach in Phoenix recommended Checkmat Charlotte. I sent an email to Micheal sharing that I’d like my daughter to come to class a few times to get some reps in over the summer. I planned to call as we expected a delayed response. In less than 24 hours Michael responded with options for my 11 year old to get practice in. We texted and made a game plan based on the schedule. The drive was quite far from my family’s home so we opted for the 6am option to beat the traffic (I know 😴!). It was so worth the drive! My daughter was able to spar for an hour and apply what she’s been learning with a few students that are yellow belts or higher and specifically an 11 year old that Micheal asked to come in (VERY EARLY!) ensuring she could practice with someone her age. The student was very skilled. Michael provided my daughter live feedback and coaching as she sparred helping to connect the dots to the skills and techniques she’s been learning back at Checkmat in Phoenix. She was not happy on our 40 min drive to class but felt inspired and confident as we drove home. We came back today (June 14) and she was able to practice with Michael’s son who is a little older and a higher belt. She again got in an hour of sparring and received tips and strategies on a few areas she’s been struggling with. Just two hours of sparring at Checkmat Charlotte and I believe my daughter will go back ready to compete and give her teammates back in Phoenix a run for their money! We will definitely be back on our next extended visit to Charlotte. We’re trying to convince my niece to join!

His dedication and expertise shone through in each class I attended. The teammates were incredibly kind and hardworking, making me feel welcomed and supported from the moment I arrived. The positive and encouraging atmosphere at Checkmat Charlotte is unmatched. If you’re seeking a top-notch Jiu Jitsu academy with a caring professor and an amazing team, Checkmat Charlotte is the place to go. Highly recommended!
Posted 2 years agoThis place is AMAZING! Professor Michael is the G.O.A.T.! It is a true family environment where the entire staff shows so much care and attention. They truly have your best interest at heart. My son has built so much confidence in himself and LOVES going to his classes. I cannot recommend this gym enough!!!!
Posted 2 years agowas in charlotte for a week on a training course for work from Canada, did a quick search for BJJ gyms near where i was staying and stumbled across checkmat jiu-jitsu, i dropped in and they treated me with nothing but respect, not just the instructors but every single student as well. They welcomed me as if i had been training there for years, i must say that going to this gym was the best part of my trip here in Charlotte. i learnt so much from everyone here in a short amount of time, everyone is very knowledgeable, the next time I'm up in Charlotte for training, i will definitely be stopping in again, would recommend this gym to anyone local as well as someone who is in the area for work Jean-Marc R.
