Josh is so respectful and kind to his students always wants the best inside and outside of the gym. Everyone i train with is great always helping out others.
Great gym, great people.
I was traveling through Knoxville and had the good fortune to get to train at Cate for the weekend!
Their whole team was very welcoming and very kind to me while we trained and chatted.
The team was gritty and tough. They showed great skill across the whole of jiujitsu. Especially wrestling.
The skill level and the environment shows a great level of leadership in the gym. Whether you’re traveling through or looking for a gym to call home.
This is a place that you can have fun and get good at martial arts.
Can’t recommend them enough enough!
I came to Cates's as a 38 year old guy brand new to martial arts. Joining this gym was, without a doubt, one of the best decisions I've made. For over two years now, I leave every class and open mat feeling glad that I showed up and put in the work. Coach and my teammates are highly valued and I welcome anyone who wants to come in and train to improve their lives on multiple fronts.
Josh is a great instructor who is extremely easy to talk to and very helpful especially as a beginner. Everyone in the classes is super supportive and wants to see each other succeed. If you are looking to actually get better and get quality coaching definitely check out this gym.
Josh has an unmatched work ethic when it comes to coaching and his dedication to his athletes. Whether you want to compete, train as a hobby, or do a bit of both, Cate’s is the place to be. Also, Josh’s sports psychology expertise blends well with his decades of experience in the martial arts. It’s because of this that he can serve as a coach, teacher, and fellow athlete so well. I think the most special part about this gym is the level of respect between members. Respect isn’t given— it’s earned. But it’s authentic and earned simply through showing up and giving 100% like everyone else is. I wouldn’t wanna train anywhere else!
Definitely the best gym in Knoxville for all things combat sports. Comparative to other gyms around town, the monthly rate feels like a steal and Coach Cate makes everyone feel like part of the family. With coach, my training routine, and team altogether, I have been able begin to fix other areas of my life just as much as hone my MMA skills. If you're having second thoughts, there's no need for thirds.
Josh Cate's gym is incredible. Josh welcomed me as a complete novice and fosters an environment of high level instruction paired with mutual respect between all gym-goers.
Aside from being a master of his craft, Josh is one of the best coaches I've had in 10+ years of athletics, who genuinely wants to see you succeed in whatever your aspirations are. Consider becoming a part of this safe space to struggle.
This is a great gym, I would recommend anyone who is interested in starting or continuing their training to check it out!
I believe the gym is great for several reasons.
Coach Cate is a top notch teacher who keeps the students engaged, learning new techniques, motivated, safe and having a good time.
The gym caters to hobbyists and pros/amateur fighters alike.
The students are great, with a range of people of different walks of life with varying fitness levels and skills levels.
This is one of the only places in town I know of that focuses entirely on No Gi.
There is a focus on ground technique's and stand up techniques.
The price is unbeatable.
Part of me wishes I had been training at Josh’s gym my entire BJJ career. My first day there I felt like I was exactly where I needed to be. Josh has a wide breadth of knowledge and experience from BJJ, Wrestling and MMA and is clearly dedicated to making sure his students improve and meet their goals. He has built a great curriculum and fostered a positive training environment to help each student grow into the best version of themselves.
Look no further for the ultimate gym/community. Join to find what you’re capable of. I am 14, smallest guy in here and I still feel right at home. There is no reason NOT to join. The physical and mental benefits will blow you away and by the time he is done with you WILL be a whole different person that will know what you’re capable of.
Best MMA gym in Knoxville and without a doubt the best group of guys to be around! I've trained here for 2 years and its like a second home. Coach Josh and Team Kaos helped me get prepared for both of my fights and I couldn't have done it with out them!
In town for a week due to work. I searched for jiu jitsu places nearby and Josh Cate's place popped up as a good recommendation. It did not disappoint. He runs a well formatted class focused primarily in no gi grappling. The students were very welcoming, as well as challenging. Lots of focused drilling and sparring rather than mindless repetition without focus. I will definitely be back to attend class here the next time I'm in town.
Best gym I've been to in Knoxville with the most affordable pricing for the best instruction. Don't know what I would do without this gym and the community!
If you are looking for a new gym to challenge yourself and improve your martial arts skills in the Knoxville area I would seriously consider Cate BJJ and kickboxing. It has all the hallmarks that you would look for in a good gym. The coach, Josh, rolls and spars everyday and teaches with a sport psychology approach which really helps, its fairly priced (a little under $6 per session if you come 5 days a week), and the gym is clean and safe. Everyone is friendly but make no mistake everyone comes to work. The culture that they have built there is bar none and I would recommend anyone of any skill level to come in for a free session.
Been coming here for 2 months now and can say it’s an amazing experience surrounded by people who wants to see you achieve any goal you have. It’s more than a group of people in a gym but has a family feeling there. Come check it out I promise you won’t be disappointed. Although some classes has numerous people there Coach Josh does not hesitate to help any individual out. For my people that’s looking to compete either in jujitsu or kickboxing anything like that. Trust and believe this gym will make a BEAST out of you this I promise.
Josh is a great coach and has a very organized and structured curriculum. You won’t find another gym in town that mixes Bjj (from a fantastic lineage)with legitimate wrestling and some judo. No other school in town will teach you to take down your opponent or defend the takedown like this one.
Great place to learn BJJ/Kickboxing. Classes are about an hour and they go by quick. Been going for about 2 months at time of post and enjoying every minute of it!
