Started at Carlson Gracie Anaheim last year, it’s been great. When I was originally looking to try jiu jitsu, I wanted somewhere that I could learn without getting hurt but still have a place that trains hard. I first tried out 10th Planet, great gym and all but very daunting for a beginner with no experience. Got my neck cranked pretty good by some of the guys there and although it’s a good gym, in my opinion not a place for a beginner without any experience. I then tried out gracie barra, and It felt more of a workout rather than a place to train. Everything is very standardized on the belt system and the class routine, more of a place younger kids or older adults to get a good workout in rather than a place to get good in jiu jitsu. When I started here at Carlson Gracie Anaheim, they did a fantastic job of setting proper expectations to all my training partners as well teaching me the basics and spending extra time to make sure I don’t get hurt or hurt any of my training partners. Coach Nick is fantastic, big guy with a good sense of humor and makes training enjoyable but has the knowledge and experience to just tell you what to do but shows you how to do it as well. He made sure I was rolling with higher belts at the beginning so they could help me out and teach me what to do while in those pressure situations. The communal aspect in the gym is great, everyone is welcoming and has good values where they have respect for all their training partners. I would recommend this gym to anyone, in all skills level, at any age. They will take care of you, teach you the foundations, and give you the help you need to achieve whatever your goals may be, whether that’s a good workout or to become a high level jiu jitsu athlete. Definitely the best experience I’ve had and the people here are fantastic.
This is the best gym for kids, parents and everyone in Anaheim. I've trained with Nick for over 15 years and he's the best Jiu Jitsu and MMA private trainer I've ever worked with. Highly recommend!
I’ve been training at Carlson Gracie Anaheim for about a year now, starting from no experience with grappling or Jiu-Jitsu. I’ve learned a ton in that time, and improved alot. Professor Nick knows what he’s doing, and the gym is full of great people who are looking to learn safely. If you’re looking to start or have experience and want to continue learning, this is the place to go.
I started at this gym over a year ago with no experience, and from the beginning, Professor Nick has been helpful and patient with me. I'm glad that I found this place and cannot recommend it enough to both experienced and new grapplers. Kickboxing classes are also offered. Come check it out.
I came into Carlson Gracie wanting to learn how to better protect myself after having to confront someone breaking into my car. Professor Nick heard my story and immediately started helping me feel more confident if a situation like that ever happened again. He taught me some very specific but simple techniques and looking back those things would have come in handy if the situation I was in got worse. Everyone’s very welcoming and the higher level students were more than willing to help me improve! Thank you to everyone at the gym for helping grow my confidence and making me feel like a part of the family!!!
This is the best Jiu Jitsu school around! All the students are great people and Nick is a wonderful professor! There are some beasts that train there but EVERYONE rolls with respect and the intent to grow.
Professor Nick is a great teacher and has created and awesome school with a great vibe. I think wether you are starting from zero or looking for a place to improve your skill and start competing this is definitely the place for you. Professor Nick really embraces the Jiu Jitsu culture and has actual years of experience competing.
I saw Royce Gracie dominate the early UFC fights back in the 1990s. And I’ve been intrigued with Jiu-Jitsu technique ever since. Too bad I let life get in the way and did not join until just six months ago — at the age of 51. But who cares! It is so much fun. When I leave the mat, I have so much joy that it keeps me coming back. Sometimes four or five times per week. And this is from a guy who hates to work out. But here I am getting a great workout all while learning self defense. I should have done this years ago! Professor Nick has created a great school where everyone feels welcome (even old guys like me!). He’s our humble and hilarious black belt instructor/owner who really cares about everyone’s safety, progress, and having fun. Without reservation I’d highly recommend this Jiu-Jitsu school to anyone wanting to give it a try.
Carlson Gracie is a great jujitsu gym, professor nick makes you work for a better you 💪🏽 also gives you a challenge. everyone I’ve meet so far in class has been super cool and are down to help you if you have a problem. Will definitely be back!!
Our son has been training with professor Nick for almost two years. When he started at 14 he had no athletic experience and everyone there was very supportive and encouraging. Now he is doing tournaments and really grown in strength and confidence. I can’t say enough good things about professor Nick and everyone at the studio. They have been a second family to my son and us.
Came here for the kids jiu jitsu program. Brought in my son so he can learn to defend himself. He went from zero experience to being able to win a 1st place Gold medal at his first jiu jitsu tournament. I myself joined the academy to learn to defend myself. I have learned tons of techniques and I can confidently say, jiu jitsu has helped me in many ways including helping my fitness/weight loss journey. The professors are great, the team members were always so welcoming as well. No egos, just a place to learn and grow. This place also offers kick boxing classes which is an amazing class to supplement any workout routine. Definetly have learned alot here!
Just because one left you a bad review for being open during covid.
This is the absolute best Jujitsu gym I have ever been to. Best instructor ever, he is extremely professional at all times and is very knowledgeable. The gym is extremely clean and he offers private lessons for reasonable prices. The students safety is paramount and it shows. I have been with this gym for a few years and have only seen the upmost respect for all who walk through the doors. It’s a month to month gym so no high pressure contracts or sales tactics. If you don’t like what you are learning then there are no commitments.
Finding this gym was by far the best thing that's happened to me in 2020. I've always wanted to learn and practice jiu jitsu because of the complex 3D chess game that it is, and when I came across a groupon deal to try it for a month, I saw it as a sign I should finally do it. I called the number that same night after hours to remind myself to call the next day to ask questions I had before going to my first class. Nick called me right back and we had a good conversation as I told him my background and what I was looking for. I felt very happy about the choice I made. Going to the first class I was excited and it was everything I hoped it would be. A warm up to stretch and instruction on a specific technique then drilling it to make sure each other person in class understands it. I went for the remainder of the month and became addicted. I can only go on Tuesdays and some Saturdays because I have a full time job and a new baby, but if I could go more, then I would. If you've ever thought about wanting to try jiu jitsu and you live within 25min, I recommend you try for the month because that's basically what I did and I only wish I could've done this earlier in my life. Nick is a good reasonable man, and he would probably refund you if you go for the first time and are completely turned off to the experience. I try to give honest criticism on here with pros and cons, but I literally don't have any cons. The other people I'm class are cool people and Nick even brings in higher level belts every now and then which is cool. They can offer more insight and show slightly different ways of thinking about the martial art that makes me appreciate it even more. 6/5 would recommend.
This place is awesome!! Professor nick has a bunch of great and welcoming athletes who have obviously been honing their craft. I’m 6’1 190lb and guys that are about 150lb we’re tapping me out 😂. Overall great gym I would recommend to anyone!
I trained with Nick for about a year after I got bullied out of the line up surfing in Newport Beach. My confidence level went up 100% after training for just a few months. I became fit much faster than going to the gym and became more aware of my strength and a abilities which helped me overcome insecurities that previously kept me from defending myself. A year after training consistently I encountered myself in a similar situation where a man attacked one of my friends at a bar. I was able to submit the guy without any punches while security defused the situation. I am forever grateful for my time training there. I would continue to go to this gym if I was still living in the area! Osss
This is a great place to train and learn. As someone new to the area, I felt not just welcomed but the other students were eager to integrate me into their program. The owner, Nick, dropped what he was doing when I first arrived to address my questions and concerns. The training and workouts are great, but the environment alone is a greater reason to stay.
Came in for the first time last week and Nick and Brett made me feel at home. As a complete beginner the environment was great for learning and felt comfortable with the movements. Will be back for sure.
Awesome place to train kids program was great. We are in town visiting and really happy with the gym and the team environment. Highly recommend this for kids and adults.
My family and I came from Canada and visited this gym with a welcoming environment, skilled professor, and helpful team mates. My son was taught new skills and had a partner that challenged his level of training. I was fairly new in my jiujitsu journey but was provided lots of instruction and aid throughout the class. Overall a great experience and would definitely return
