Having previously left Carlson Gracie Ju-Jitsu, I feel that it’s only fair I give my opinion on the gym. (This is a detailed review). So I’ll give a little bit of info about myself so you know I’m not talking about a subject I know absolutely nothing about. I trained at this gym between May 2025 - July 2025 upon changing location for work. I’d previously had about 4 months of Ju-Jitsu experience (No Gi) at another well established gym (SWBJJ). I’ve vaguely followed the sport over the past year, upon becoming interested through seeing its use in MMA. I can assure you, this IS the best gym in Hull for grappling. My reasons for this include the following: No. 1 The people you’ll roll with. The gym owner is a bloke called Owen Livesey (if you don’t know him, look him up), there is a gentleman in there who took gold in the 100kg ADCC masters too (if that doesn’t mean anything to you, basically he is the most profound 100kg ju-jitsu athlete above age 35 in the country). There is also two British catch wrestling champions in there, along with a pro MMA fighter who won his most recent bout as of this review, via rear naked choke. The current Head Coach does online coaching for both grappling and MMA athletes, and lives and breathes the sport. Among those mentioned, there is plenty more very experienced athletes, all of which are down to earth, decent people. Which brings me to my next point. No. 2 the community. Throughout my short stint at Carlson Gracie Hull, there was not one person I came across who wasn’t a decent, honest person. Upon completion of my first session, I immediately felt accepted. It appears to me that most of the people there are so dedicated that they’ve been going there for years, and as corny as it sounds, it is very much a family type atmosphere. Because of this, it’s very easy to get stuck in and learn, without feeling animosity against or towards any of your peers. No. 3 This gym encourages wrestling within its Ju-Jitsu. To me, this makes it far more practical and fun. I have no doubt that this has lead to much of the success of the participants here. If you don’t wish to compete and just wish to do it as a hobby, or to get fit, or to learn something new, PLEASE don’t be put off by what I’ve previously said. I can only speak from a seniors perspective, as I never witnessed the sessions held for the younger age groups. Nonetheless, I have no doubt those sessions followed in the same manner of which the adult sessions were held.

I was visiting my family in Hull for a week and I decided to do a couple of training sessions here, let me tell you, it was a great decision! As a 17 year old girl, it can be intimidating to go and train somewhere else, but everyone here was so welcome and friendly. On top of that, there is absolutely no ego in this club and whilst sparring they will give you a chance to try stuff which isn’t the case everywhere. The trainers here are well structured and they know their stuff. I did two grappling sessions here and learned so much! The trainers will take their time explaining stuff and will go and look at everyone to see if they understand the techniques. I had a great time training here and will definitely be coming back!

Absolutely brilliant place to train! If you want to train at a place where you are made to feel welcome from the first night you go in, then this is the place. Great group of people, and a really good opportunity to learn for new starts and experienced players.

Absolutely amazing experience at the club, Julia is not only a super encouraging and detail-orientated coach, but practiced what she preaches and pushes you to train hard in a positive, empowering environment. Great location with transport links and importantly things to eat after training ;) You can tell that of course they breed champions there but at the same time it is one of the most welcoming and warm environments for newcomers to combat sports. For the first time in all my BJJ training I actually feel confident and excited to do more stand up. Highly recommend anyone to take a visit (no matter where you’re from) - one of the best places I’ve had the pleasure of dropping in to train at.
