There is no academy in the area that compares to this one. Instructor is beyond qualified and the members of the school are guaranteed to treat you like family
I'm a purple belt from a gym in Massachusetts, traveled here for military. This gym is absolutely amazing. Professor Travis and his students are so welcoming, family atmosphere and the instruction is on point. You won't find a better school, if you want to train, learn and be part of a community this is the place. Oss!
Professor Haynes has a deep knowledge of BJJ and the interpersonal skills and enthusiasm necessary to make him a great teacher. You will receive excellent BJJ instruction while also improving your physical fitness and self-discipline. And the kids’ classes are exceptional too. I am very happy to be a student here.
This is THE place to train bjj in the dayton area. Excellent environment and an incredible instructor.
As someone who wants to get in better shape, have a wider range of mobility, and learn what ways to win the fight, this is the place to be! Prof is amazing and knows how to tailor his directions to different levels. This is my first time seriously taking bjj and no one there has ever made new feel less than but I also don't feel babied. Prof makes me feel more confident in what I'm doing with each lesson. He also makes sure to show those who are further excelled more options. Everyone there is honestly amazing!!!
I did various stand-up martial arts in the past for about 5 years, and I’ve learned infinitely more in the short 2.5 months since I’ve been training under Prof Travis than I have anywhere else. Not only that, the atmosphere in this place is unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been. From day one, everyone welcomes you with open arms. Everyone is rooting for each other here. This place is seriously one in a million.
When I first visited the school the thing that stood out the most was the welcoming atmosphere. No belittling of others for lack of experience from the coach or other students. Professor Travis Haynes is second to none as a teacher. He's very patient and makes time for each student. All he asks is for you to show up and he takes care of the rest. I'd give this place more stars if I could.
I started training at this location when it first opened up. We started small but every week we get new faces coming in to train. This gym has a solid group of guys and girls. Professor Travis is Ohio's highest ranking Carlson Gracie black belt, and his teaching methods are just phenomenal. He specializes in teaching the students in a manner where each individual can learn and grow. He is great teaching both adults and children and is patient with the students. If you want to learn a self defense method that will work in the real world or if you just want to do it for fun, please come on in.
I have trained at many different academies and MMA-style gyms, since I started my Jiu Jitsu journey in 2008. Most have been in Southern California which anyone who knows anything about BJJ, would agree is one of the Mecca locations for BJJ in the United States. But after moving back to Ohio, I struggled to find an academy that felt like “home”, that is until my wife discovered the advertisement on social media, alerting everyone that a Carlson Gracie academy was opening in Huber Heights. I immediately messaged Professor Travis Haynes. He was welcoming from the first conversation. Appreciated my experience with different academies and asked what I thought made a good academy as well as a bad one. His instruction is comparable to many of the original masters of BJJ that now teach in the US, after leaving their home in Brazil, in order to spread the art form. His ability to simplify complicated concepts and techniques far exceeds any American-born professor that I have ever trained under. He is great with kids, great with adults and has a true passion for the art of Jiu Jitsu, always providing individual instruction tailored to each individual practitioner and their unique skill-sets. I cannot recommend this academy enough; words really don’t describe the supportive environment and high-caliber instruction adequately. If you want to learn true Jiu Jitsu, you cannot learn it off the internet, Professor Haynes and Carlson Gracie Dayton HQ, is where you need to be.
Great gym with some of the most professional and organized instructors I've had the pleasure of working with. They offer both kids and adults programs, for absolute beginners or seasoned professionals. Clean and brand new facility!
Come and join the carlson gracie team by black belt instructor Travis haynes where you will learn with good people . I could say I don't regret joining I feel at home here and I'm learning everyday with a good team so come to join a good strong winning team 💪🏽
I can't recommend Professor Travis Haynes highly enough. From the moment I walked in, everyone was very friendly and welcoming. The instruction is incredibly meticulous, and prof is always taking the time to ensure everyone understands techniques and concepts, regardless of skill level. What really impressed me is the sense of camaraderie among the students. Everyone is eager to help each other improve, creating a positive learning environment. Carlson Gracie Dayton HQ provides the perfect blend of challenge, support, and most importantly, authenticity.
There are clubs, and then there places to learn. This is a place to prefect the craft of BJJ. I have been around this for a lot of years, and Prof Travis is the best around. If you're serious about learning and perfecting the craft, come here. The knowledge transfer is insane. Most new comers will never understand the lineage that Travis comes from.
I've been training various martial arts, mostly Judo for about 7 years. I have worked with some very, very skilled instructors. Travis Haynes is a meticulous and learned teacher. His knowledge of detail from every position, every technique is depth beyond belief. I have been impressed with the training curriculum in the first month. Its just enough information in each class so that its not overwhelming, starting from a core position we're learning variations with applications both in competition but also self defense scenarios. Each class starts with a brief warm up, largely exercises to get the blood pumping and maybe a drill or two targeted towards what we're going to work on. Then it's instruction for a majority of class followed by technical rolling or free rolling. The website says "Keep one foot in the streets, and one foot on the mats." and you can expect training to reflect that motto. While training is a serious endeavor and Prof. leads the classes in a serious manner, he also brings a good spirit of humor and levity to the class. The facility is brand new. Fresh mats, clean and welcoming. It's not a frilly setup, it's got what you need, a clean and safe space to train, front desk area and bathrooms. For those who know, you know that's enough. Don't sleep on training. Don't sleep on BJJ. Come to Carlson Gracie HQ.
30+ years of mastering and refining jiujitsu with the best in Brazil, the US, and beyond has culminated in Professor Haynes opening the Carlson Gracie OHIO HEADQUARTERS right here in Dayton. Come for the fighting jiujitsu, stay for the vibe. He'll teach you the subtle details you FEEL, not just what you see.
I met Prof Haynes when he came and visited us at the Dayton Martial Arts Center. My friend Gunter introduced him to our school, and thus I returned in kind with a welcome and a hand shake. I was a brown belt then. Good sir held a genuine and humble aura about himself... but I could tell behind the humble was a rumble ready to pop off if needed! Prof is more than capable and versatile: Wrestling, Sambo, Judo black belt under Fritz Gross, Hayastan black belt under Gokor Chivichyan (Gene LeBelle lineage), Traditional Jujitsu, and of course Carlson Gracie Jiu-jitsu 4th Degree - A grappler's grappler, a warrior through and through. I remember encouraging my friend to study with Prof Haynes after he voiced frustrations "I've learned more under him in the last 4 weeks than the place I am at now" I told him that's all the proof he needs. He made the jump, his evolution since has been more than commendable, its admirable. It wasn't until Prof invited me to a friend and family class session that I fully understood the scope and philosophy behind "applying pressure". It is not just figurative. It is in every way literal, but done with such subtle grace that by the time you realize you're in danger, you're tapping. I have seen and experienced first hand (if only a sliver) the depth of the well; the fount of knowledge procured through a life lived well. I salute and celebrate Prof Haynes and all my friends at Carlson Gracie Dayton HQ. You're with a real one 🤙🏾 I am honored to know y'all.
