The Cape Fear Aikido Association is an organization dedicated to making high quality aikido training available to all people in the Cape Fear Region at an affordable price.
I was initially looking for a martial art for my 13 year old son that was less aggressive than the style of karate I studied back in the late 70's through the early 90's. Sensei Tony was teaching the class that night and was the first person to greet us at the door. My son and I showed up unannounced with hopes of sneaking a quick peak at a class. Sensei Tony was super knowledgable and friendly, unlike the karate instructors I knew from my own 13 years experience who were all quite intimidating. He invited us to stay for the entire class which was mostly dedicated to the preparation of a16 year old young ladies up and coming brown belt test. That evening I emailed to thank Sensei Tony for being so gracious and I wound up getting a response from Sensei John who invited both my son and I to join them at the next class. Mind you, I had no intention of personally getting back on the mat after being away from martial arts for almost 35 years.
That class, which was taught by Sensei John, was so much fun for both my son and I that it left us both wanting more. Again, Sensei John invited us back to the next class, which happened to be a weapons class that was taught by Sensei Joe, who once again was not only super knowledgable, but also caring and patient. I am pretty sure that if you look into most of these other Japanese, Chinese or Korean style schools you will not find any of these qualities in their Sensei's and for that reason alone if you are a man, woman, or child of almost any age I would highly recommend UNCW Aikido Club.
What is also hard to believe in this day and age is that there are no contracts and the monthly dues are very reasonable.
For my last comment if you are looking to physically get in shape or shed a few pounds the classes leave me in a pool of sweat!
