One of the best schools in the nation. Top tier instruction.
What an incredible place! Not only are the instructors extremely skilled at what they do, they teach it with precision, clarity and patience. The environment is welcoming and warm, and as a woman, i want to note how safe and comfortable i feel at this school.
D This school has been wonderful for our 4 year old. I can't recommend it highly enough. The physical activity is great but what I'm most impressed by is how much he is learning about personal responsibility, character development, and working towards a goal over a long time. He now does simple chores at home bc they talk about it at jiu jitsu!
Collin McGee is the awesome trainer that I’ve ever met. Highly recommend this place for your intro and future Jiu Jitsu classes!
They are great instructors they work with you and your child in a comfortable environment
Mr Ramirez has a great demeanor for kids. Calm, but stern. Fun, but serious. My 4 yr old loves it.
I cannot expressed to you my gratitude, thanks from me and my family. Isaiah has shown so much confidence in just the few sessions. He’s happy and motivated, because he feels part of something, he feels welcome to be part of something. You guys have been so wonderful wonderful wonderful thank you so so much Mr. Ramirez. Thank you so much. Thank you for your instructors . You guys are amazing. You and your instructors are amazing. Patient and kind yet assertive guys are amazing. Thank you.
Coaches and staff are super friendly and professional, the classes are smooth and they also have kid classes.
Great intro deal for those intimidated by BJJ. They have the formula down on how to entice the little ones especially with their stripe rewarding system. Everything from the 1:1 private intro class to the group classes where there’s always at least two assistants to every teacher. Everyone is made sure to feel welcomed but also able to do the drills. They do set some high expectations to kiddos who are set to advance but I think that’s necessary for the discipline. There is discipline in the class but lots of fun goofy drills built in for the kids as well. They also hosted a great monthly women’s self defense course. I love the community it’s built here in our neighborhood and will continue to come here to support for as long as we can!
I started a month ago as a beginner and absolutely love this place. The instructors, and partners, the workouts, the vibes, everything checks out!
My husband recently went for his introductory class I’m gonna sign up soon he had a great experience Definitely looking forward to attending class here
I have been attending beginner BJJ classes at this gym for a few weeks. Classes are fun, challenging, and keep me in shape. The instructors are very skilled at explaining & demonstrating the techniques. Overall, I think this gym has a positive atmosphere that support all students, including those with no experience.
Everyone here was so supportive and kind with my 12 year old. They made sure he was getting what was best for him. The vibe is warm but serious regarding the learning. I also noticed the younger kids were having a ball in the class preceding ours. Sincere thanks to Brian and the entire BBJJ family
The tiny tigers class is great. I've never seen teachers interact with children so well - it's amazing that they can hold their attention while making class fun. Our 5 year old loves it!
Fantastic BJJ school! I just started and very much enjoying the exercise and learning experience. I've become somewhat hooked and having a lot of fun!
I was new to Brooklyn last summer and looking for some type of physical activity and potentially a good community of people - and that’s exactly what I’ve found with BBJJ. Speaking as someone almost 30 years old with zero martial arts experience, the instruction here is top notch. They break everything into digestible pieces, while seamlessly catering to various skill levels to allow everyone to progress together. Classes are available 6 days a week; kids, Thai boxing, technique and randori Gi classes, and no gi. I’ve found a lifelong passion, incredible friendships, and a home away from home where I am always welcome and encouraged to be better everyday. I would absolutely recommend the dojo to anyone!
A great positive space to build self defense skills. Our kids attend and we are extremely impressed with the warmth and teaching style of the teachers. A particular shout out to Ms. Hofstetter who is outstanding!!!
This dojo is very clean, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful, monthly pass is $219 per month for unlimited classes in my child’s level, she goes 5 times per week. My daughter’s confidence level has skyrocketed taking jiu jitsu here and she is being taught self-defense, self-respect, community, discipline, confidence and all while getting a good workout in. Would highly recommend
Everyone there is very friendly and supportive. They taught me well and I really learned a lot. There are many classes available throughout the week so I could really spend a lot of time there. I think the time I spent at BBJJ was well worth it.
My son absolutely LOVES BBJJ on Myrtle. The location is clean and they follow all COVID safe protocols while making the kids feel safe, comfortable and engaged. I highly recommend anyone considering a physical activity for their little ones, especially in the winter.
The school at Myrtle Avenue is most impressive from the learning environment as well as the fundamentals of Muay Thai & Jiu-Jitsu. Same goes for the other dojos of Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Definitely recommend.
Excellent school that I would recommend to anyone looking to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The thing that makes this school so great is the focus on community and being positive at every turn which makes training and learning a rewarding experience. All of the instructors are knowledgeable and are willing to help out in anyway that they can to help you along your journey to black belt. Going along with this is the fact that each of the students, following along with the positive vibe are also helpful, and it isn't uncommon to see each student helping one another with tips to improve on technique as class goes along. But perhaps the best thing that I enjoy is that the school emphasizes real world application , so anything you do , you have to learn w/ resistance to apply it to a real world scenario, and further improve on your technique. Personally it's been a very positive experience for me and despite the fact it's out of my comfort zone, finishing each class feels rewarding and pushes me forward. Can't recommend this school enough!
I would highly recommend this school, especially to those without martial arts experience. The sense of community at BBJJ rocks--people of all backgrounds/levels of experience committed to your growth in and outside of class. The physical and mental training will work wonders on your body, mind and spirit!
My child enjoys every minute of their classes and fun events. I'd recommend BBJJ to anyone in a heartbeat.
My son, who has some special needs, and has experienced some bullying in school is doing really well at BBJJ! He is excited and his confidence is growing. Couldn't be happier. Thank you BBJJ!
A great place to start or continue your training! I was a little nervous at first, being I haven't tried any martial arts in a few years, and I was feeling out of shape...reccomended by a friend, a great deal picked up off of Groupon: it was a blast from the start! A very accomidating schedule with many times and availabilities too. The staff and fellow enthusiasts immediately made it feel like a welcome and open environment to train. Any questions or thoughts were answered quickly and with a feeling that they truly loved the art and what they do. Each session I attended was another chance to join and feel a part of something. I can't remember one time I went there not feeling accomplished, motivated or not wanting to attend again, I felt that rush! I highly recommend this place and am thankful for the experience! Keep rolling!
The best gym you'll ever go to. The instructors are amazing and work hard to motivate us to be the best we can be. If you miss a couple of classes or tell them you'll be out, they'll send you a text reminding you they hope to see you back in the dojo. That's amazing accountability! The training partners are also awesome. It's a true community of people from all over the neighborhood coming together to work on themselves. This isn't one of those gyms full of MMA wannabe tryhards working to knock each others heads off in kickboxing or see how many submissions they can get in randori. It's a community of people working together to help everyone improve, from beginner to black belt. BBJJ changed my life, no joke. I lost 25lbs, changed how I see myself, gained some self defense skills, and built a workout routine I take with me whether or not I'm able to get to the dojo. The only reason I'm not coming here any more is I moved out of the city. Do yourself a favor and just try the intro class at BBJJ. You won't regret it.
My 12 year old daughter loves taking kickboxing here. She works hard and gets great excercise, and most importantly is part of a caring community, instilling positive values. The teachers are amazing. She is with adults and other kids her age, but fits right in. We love it here!
My daughter is attending classes here. She decided to try out martial arts because her friends were doing it. She has since decided she wants to attend more often and pursue a black belt. She is 6. I love the enthusiasm, dedication and ambition towards the sport, setting goals and reaching them that they have inspired in my daughter. This is done with such a fun and positive attitude. I hope the lessons she is learning at the school she will carry over to her school work and other aspects of her life.
I took my 5th grade class here two days ago for the free Bully Buster / Child Safety seminar. It was a really fun, engaging session. The instructors gave clear directions and taught students basic self defense (words and actions) when confronted with a sticky situation. Everyone got the opportunity to break a board at the end. Best of all, as I mentioned above, it is completely FREE! I highly recommend Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Our son has really enjoyed his past year at BBJJ. The teachers are so enthusiastic and the classes are really energizing and age appropriate. We threw his 6th birthday party here recently with Ms Hofstetter and it was a blast! The kids especially enjoyed breaking wooden boards at the end after a super fun assault course. And most recently, the women’s self defense seminar was a really great experience. Overall we love it!
BBJJ on Myrtle Avenue is absolutely amazing. I like that you can customize your workouts to your personal schedule as they offer 4 beginner level jiu jitsu classes per week. On top of that, the staff is wonderful. Everyone is very kind, welcoming, and encouraging. The environment is very positive as they not only focus on developing students on the mat, but off the mat as well. I can honestly say my experience here has been life changing and would definitely recommend this place to anyone interested in a commitment to the martial arts.
Absolutely amazing place. I never would have thought of martial arts, but this has been really great. It's the only sport the kids have stuck at so far. And we love the discipline. Great release of energy, fantastic staff. Can't recommend it highly enough.
The staff here is one of the friendliest and most thoughtful I've experience. Our 5 yo daughter, who's very shy, LOVES going here, thanks to the staffs' kindness and patience with her.
I have a very hard time sticking to things. I have dropped about 6 or 7 different sports activities in the last 4 years. It was only this dojo that I've stuck to for over a year now and continue to want to keep coming. Not only is the staff very supportive but also your training partners. The atmosphere for the school is very friendly and positive, while the training continues to be engaging and worthwhile.
Great teachers, great community, friendly atmosphere. If you're looking for a place to train jiu jitsu with an eye toward technique and longevity, I can't recommend this school enough.
Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a once in a lifetime experience. My son has been attending this amazing program for 2 years. Ever since he started attending classes, my son developed and prospered in and out of the dojo. The faculty and staff were extremely patient, supportive and dedicated with regards to making all of their students better. They treated everyone like family. Not only did the staff focus on teaching their students Jiu- Jitsu, they also taught them to never give up, and you don't have to wear a black belt in order to be one. My son learned that a black belt is someone who is well disciplined, hardworking and a leader. BBJJ also impacts our community in many ways. They encourage their students to perform community services. This can help our community and society in so many ways. In the dojo, the instructors make the class fun, but at the same time challenging. Ms. Hofstetter, Mr. Ramirez, Mr. Cancel and Mr. Burns are a few of many people in this program who inspired my son in so many ways. This school is very unique and special. I guarantee that you will not find a martial arts school like this one. We are all a community that strives for black belt on and off the mat. One day, I remembered asking my son, Julius "What was one thing that you learned today?" and he replied "Kaizen, constant and never ending improvement."
Love this place my son has grown so much teachers are Awsome family friendly and very informative on matial arts
I can not recommend Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on Myrtle Avenue highly enough. My son age 6 started here approx. 9 months ago and in that time he has gone from an absolute beginner to an orange belt super star! He adores his teacher - Ms. Hofstetter, who has shown such patience, love and respect for the children in her teaching practices. Hudson has grown in confidence and the discipline and respect this has taught him has permeated all other areas of his life. He tells me it’s his favorite activity and I can see why! Beyond grateful to this amazing team of teachers. Jane Andre, Mom to Hudson
Very good Jiu-Jitsu training place, the instructors in Clinton Hill are very professional, supportive and patient. They will check up your training progress periodically, and give you some advice. Also the whole gym is very clean. A good place for both beginners and advance students.
Really good Thai kickboxing training. The introductory special is a great way to get started and then you'll love going back. Very supportive and quality instructors, I really like the community at BBJJ. And most of all, the classes are fun!
I have lived around the corner from BBJJ in Clinton Hill for 18 months, and when I decided I really needed to develop an exercise regimen that would last a lifetime, I decided to check this place out. I have no previous experience with martial arts, and I'm definitely not in peak condition. The classes are pretty evenly divided between calisthenics/aerobic exercise (jumping jacks, pushups, situps, etc.), and training in jiu jitsu moves, holds, etc., so you get a great workout while having fun and learning a new, challenging skill. I've heard multiple instructors refer to jiu jitsu as brain/body chess, and I find the comparison to be apt. For a gym/workout to work for me in the long term, it has to be fun, and not easy to give myself an excuse not to do it. The location, and the caraderie, support, and enjoyment that each class brings to my day is undeniable - I started laughing spontaneously on my (very short) walk home from class on Friday night, after Mr. Ramirez put us through a grueling, yet fun, workout. I can't recommend the school too highly, and have had a lot of fun at the Clinton Hill and Bay Parkway locations.
My two children, myself, and my wife all train here and love it. The staff is amazing, and goes above and beyond expectations. Going here has become an important part of our lives!
This school is beautiful and clean . By clean I don't just mean physically clean, but mentally as well. This a great place to learn technical martial arts for both beginners and those that have experience . The environment is a safe one which promotes healthy training for everyone. Professor Lynch , currently a Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu and a Black Belt in Thai Kickboxing really does a phenomenal job of running the school and the staff is dedicated to bringing out the best in me .
BBJJ has been a game changer for us in so many ways. My 7yo son has become a focused, disciplined student. He looks forward to each and every class at BBJJ. In his own words: "I have made a commitment" - I couldn't have imagined this sentence coming from him before we joined BBJJ. Further, it has reflected on other aspects of his life too - from school, swimming, and music lessons, to simple tasks at home and community involvement. The instructors at BBJJ are kind, yet firm and have earned a tremendous respect from my son and our family.
I have been training here since they opened and I can not say enough about the quality, consistency and leadership from the staff and senior students. This place embodies what a martial arts dojo originally meant to the practitioners and masters of the arts, a place of respect, compassion and dignity. Every time I step in the door my whole being changes and I remember that I have come here to become the best person I can possibly be. This school has been an enormous factor in helping me create a lifestyle that I am very happy with and I look forward to a future that includes BBJJ for a long and healthy life. OSS!
There are few moments in life anyone can say that something is truly "life-changing." But having gone for almost a year now at BBJJ, I can say that joining BBJJ was one of those life-changing moments. When I first looked into their Thai kickboxing program, my main goal was to simply get back into shape and increase flexibility without going to a gym or the latest trending workout movement. I'm just not a gym person at all. And it's not like I was a huge martial arts buff or anything either (I'm a violinist!). But I had no idea that kickboxing here would lead me to be in the best shape of my life, both physically and mentally. "Best shape of my life" might sound cliche, but seriously, I've never been this strong and lean before. Then there's the added bonus of learning how to defend yourself. Important to note, this is NOT an aggressive or competitive place. In fact the instructors here emphasize pretty much the opposite. If you're seeking a career in cagefighting, this is not for you. That being said, I know that if it really ever came down to it, I could confidently defend myself. The instructors are excellent and just wonderful people. Their focus on respect towards others, self-respect, and overall self-improvement, has had a tremendous impact on my personal and professional life. So yeah, 5 stars.
The atmosphere for someone who wants to learn but looking to compete or someone who is looking to get into shape in a fun way. The staff is awesome, warm and caring people who will push you without intimidating you. I feel it's a great atmosphere for a woman to learn self defense, you get so much confidence when you can get an awesome work out and know that you have another tool under your belt.
I've been a member at Brooklyn BJJ for a month now and it has been an incredibly positive experience. I was in the middle of a serious winter slump, wanting only to hibernate and retreat into myself. I had trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu off and on at other schools around the country, but I never felt that I was able to fully commit to it. The welcoming and super positive atmosphere at Brooklyn BJJ has helped me shed my winter depression, rebuild my personal confidence and re-engage with my jiu-jitsu practice like never before. I highly recommend the school for students of any experience level.
Really supportive staff, quality instructors, and a fun and lively environment. I cannot recommend it more!
A place to get fit physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally... A holistic approach towards the martial arts and a way of life in everyday toward processes... You want change this is the place to learn to acquire it
I practice at this location for 6 months already and I don't plan on stopping. I enjoy every class. The staff is very helpful and push you to do your best. My kids and wife also practice and they love it as much as I do.
I'm currently a student and have had a phenomenal experience focusing on both physical and mental wellness. The pace of the classes are perfect for learning. I am challenged but always feel supported to reach for my personal best. The instructors take time to ensure you are okay in class but also show concern for your life outside of class. BBJJ has been well worth my investment for the past 2 years!
Starting at BBJJ is one of the best things I could have done for myself. It has made me physically and mentally stronger in a short period of time. The best part about the classes are the senior students who are extremely willing to teach you techniques at your pace and who will always give you advice. Overall, the discipline and motivation BBJJ teaches is great and can be applied to every area of life.
I joined BBJJ on a whim 10 months ago and I've been totally hooked ever since. There's a lot to like about this place but the main reason I keep coming back is the quality of the instruction. To put it as simply as I can, I am really progressing here. Professor Lynch and Mr. Burns are great teachers and they manage to make each class challenging but not intimidating. If you've ever considered getting into martial arts you should do yourself a favor and check this place out. You'll love it.
I have been training for a few months now at the Myrtle location. I like the personnal attention that all instructors have towards students. The training is done in a safe environment and the goal of improvement is constantly present. I have seen positive results from the training. I highly recommend the school to anyone wanting to pratice martial arts.
I remember the first time I walked into the Dojo. It was a little off-putting how nice everyone was. Everyone smiled, said hello, and asked how I was doing. And not in that hey-how-you-doing-but-I-don't-really-care-about-your-answer, kind of way. They actually were interested in knowing how I was doing. A whole school filled with people like this! As uncomfortable as it made me, it was more strange to me that I thought this was something strange, unique and different. It's pretty sad when compassion and kindness are not the norm. Now, two years later into my training at BBJJ I can wholeheartedly say I am eternally grateful for this school, the instructors and the training partners. I have made amazing friends that will last forever. Over the years I have done many forms of fitness from various types of yoga, spinning, running, dance class, and plain old cardio on the machines at a gym. While all of them are great, and I still do them from time to time, none of them have quite resonated with me like training at BBJJ has. It is a hard workout, building endurance and strength. It builds flexibility. But what I find most important is not what the school has done for my body, but what it has done for my confidence, mind and spirit. This school is not like any other martial arts school. It is doing something very unique and special. It is a safe place where people can grow into better human beings. We don't have competitions here. We have community. The instructors and students are genuinely invested in helping one another progress both on the mat and off the mat. The community that Shihan Dunn, Professor Glick, Professor Lynch and the rest of the instructors at the schools have built is incredibly special. I feel privileged to be a part of it. I know my life is better off for it and I will continue to be a part of this school forever. If you have ever wanted to practice Martial Arts, THIS is the school to do it at! You will not regret it!
In no uncertain terms, this place profoundly changed my life for the better and I am forever grateful. I kind of fell into the martial arts accidentally, but it turned out to be just what I was looking for. Prior to training I was depressed, lethargic and overweight, having little sense of purpose or direction. Through the highly philosophic approach to training, I was transformed both physically and mentally and my whole outlook and way of life have changed as a result. Places like BBJJ are few and far between and they are an essential part of what make being part of a community such a wonderful thing. I highly recommend checking it out and giving it a try. While learning new skills can be quite challenging and overwhelming at times, the community of instructors and training partners make this an ideal place for anyone to develop themselves. I can’t say enough good things about this place and hope that you are able to experience it for yourself.
I've always been a lover of the martial arts. For the past 2 years I have been training here, and I have to say that they make all the difference in the world. In a time were martial arts are getting the reputation of being violent activities thanks to competitive sports like the MMAs, this people are bringing jiu jitsu to its roots as a way of life. In this place, not only I have found a community of respectful martial artists, I've also found a family.
My two kids took Jiu Jitsu lessons, one as a repeat student and the other for the first time, this summer at the Myrtle Ave BBJJ location. They loved it and have been practicing their moves - including practicing respect for one another and others around them!!! - ever since. We loved the kids' staff there (especially Sonya) and were especially impressed by how many active staff members there were to assist during the children's classes. This is no martial arts "factory" which is something I am wary of from previous experiences. Rather, it feels like their goal is to help empower kids to find and use their own inner strength as well as understand how to use their own physical strength. Unfortunately we are only within range of this location in the summers, but we plan to be back next year!
I started training at BBJJ almost 2 years ago. I have never been a gym person but BBJJ with it's unique approach to training, their philosophy, excellent instructors, and great community convinced me to start working towards a healthier lifestyle, physically as well as mentally. It became a support system for me, my family. My training partners and of course my instructors are always there to help me to get the best out of training, in every class you'll learn something new, are able to define your technique or help new students find their way. Everybody in this dojo will treat you with highest respect no matter what belt rank you are. It does not matter who you are, male or female, where you are from, if you are bigger or smaller, what color your skin is or what you do for a living, once you step on the mat everybody is the same and works towards the same goal... Black Belt. And you will have all the support to go through the bumps and bruises in your life and master obstacles along the road.
Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been both a unique and unexpected journey for me. Having a somewhat extensive involvement in competitive team sports, both in high school and on the collegiate level, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect when I signed up for my first few classes. My brother, who had been training at the time for a little over a year and a half, described to me the experience as 'different.' At first I pretty adamantly didn't want to go because of my recent hiatus from a highly competitive environment (College Lacrosse). However, my experience at Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu could be nothing further from what I expected. On a basic level BBJJ has provided me with a consistent athletic release. Allowing me to stay active and work out 3-5 days a week has been one of the key components to my success as a full-time student and artist. On a deeper level BBJJ has helped me see a different way of living. Under the guidance of great peers and Professors, I have become a happier and more open person. The competitive nature that I had grown so used to in sports, which helped to fostered such stressful environments for me, have been completely negated by BBJJ. Over the last year and some change my perspective on what it means to be an athlete, a citizen, and a human, have all developed and progressed. Ultimately, BBJJ may not be the place for you, especially if you're walking through the doors looking for a 'beat em' up' dojo. But if your open to a new experience, one that will almost undoubtably make you a happier and better person, while simultaneously learning BJJ from high level practitioners, it is probably just right.
I have been training at Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since 2009, having attained the rank of brown belt. BBJJ is more than a school. It’s a community of like-minded, positive individuals who are all working together to better themselves and, by the way, reach black belt in the process. The relationships that are formed there go beyond the dojo and I have made many friends who will be in my life for the foreseeable future. The staff are all dedicated, caring individuals who truly relish in seeing growth and improvement in their students. BBJJ is not about “competition- who’s better- get your cauliflower ear and your teeth knocked out MMA.” It’s a place where you can realize your martial arts goals as well as other life goals with the help, motivation and support of the staff and fellow students. There’s no other martial arts school like it!
I really like this place. They do try to sell you membership and it is long term. However, people there are warm and they care. Jiu jitsu and Thai workouts are fun.
I must say one of the more recent reviews was spot on about this place being a McDojo. They give out stripes and the end of each class this i can confirm, you’ll get your blue belt here within the first year of training. However your rank in this place won’t translate to any other place else. Also they make you form a line and read out loud a series of affirmations which are posted on a wall, this came off cult like and somewhat creepy, to a more unsuspecting individual this may not be a red flag however it is since I’ve never encountered anything like it in the places I’ve trained at. In conclusion this is as McDojo as it gets, attend every training and pay your fees and you’ll have a black belt in less than 5 years.
This is what’s know in the martial arts community as a ‘McDojo’ The definition of a McDojo is A martial arts school that is solely established to make money instead of genuinely teaching martial arts. They give stripes and the end of each class just for attendance, there’s also noticeable conditioning going on as in brainwashing type of conditioning. STAY AWAY
they wont let you enter the advanced class unless you sign a long term contract. problems with cancellation as well. Moreover, they dont let you spar if you are in the beginner class. In order to spar you need to sign up for a long term contract which i feel is really unfair, since sparring is the best part of the sport and since when i signed up i was a student at home for the summer so a long term contract wasnt feasible. the place i train now and most gyms ive ever been to allow the beginner class to spar. even if you attend a lot of classes, and are at a high skill level, they wont let you enter the advance class unless you sign up long-term.
