I moved to Kansas City for the Command and General Staff College (CGSC), and during my time there, I was on the lookout for a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) academy that was both family and adult-friendly, with a welcoming atmosphere. Fortunately, I found exactly what I was seeking and more. Practicing BJJ there turned out to be the highlight of my academic year in Kansas, providing not only great training but also a strong sense of community and family.
Posted 1 year agoOutstanding gym. As a new student you are expected to work hard but you are treated with respect. Instructors and students maintain a positive atmosphere.
Posted 2 years agoI am a purple belt from Atlanta who visited Brazil Academy North while in KC for a month-long work trip in June. It was one of the best places I have ever trained BJJ! Professors Sam and Gabriel were both amazing instructors, and every person I met at the gym was warm, welcoming, and extremely friendly. There was a very family-friendly atmosphere, with lots of kids having a blast on the mats before the evening adult classes. And I appreciated that they offered morning classes so I could train before work as well. The facilities (e.g., mats, locker rooms, bathrooms) were always clean and well-maintained. Most important, there were always a variety of students from all belt ranks to train with, and I got a ton of great technical rolls all month long. If I’m ever in KC again, I’ll be back. I can’t recommend Brazil Academy North enough, it’s the perfect place to learn and grow in your jiu jitsu journey!
Posted 2 years agoI had the opportunity to check out the new extension of the Brazil Academy. The facilities are fantastic, with further expansions coming up and adding a complete set of showers for those that don't like to train and then jump right back in their car. I previously trained under Sam, and he is by far the best instructor out there. He is patient and very focused on safety and learning. If you are looking for a safe place to learn BJJ, you can't do much better in Kansas City. Somethings to keep in mind: If you are new to the sport, you will sweat, feel awkward, and have some sore muscles even if you don't roll with others in the class. The discomfort will go away since everyone here wants you to excel and get better. You do not need to be in shape to start. Jiu Jitsu is scalable and can roll harder as you get better conditioned. I am not saying it gets easy, but it's part of the journey. Sam will push you to be better in the gym and out of it. If you are looking to drop weight and get in shape, doing this four times a week will get you on the path
