My son has only been attending Andrew's classes at Black Beard Ju Jitsu for a few months, but I've already seen a huge difference. After just a couple of sessions, he had learned some great techniques and was excited to show me what he'd been practising. He's made new friends, looks forward to every class, and we've noticed a real boost in his confidence. Andrew creates a friendly, supportive environment, and we highly recommend Black Beard Ju Jitsu!
Highly Recommended – Outstanding Kids BJJ Academy! I couldn’t be happier with the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy my daughters (now a bit older) attend. They started at just 5 and 6 years old, coming from a background of dancing and gymnastics. They were both quite nervous about trying something that can look intimidating from the outside, but the coaches completely won them over from day one. Special mention to Andrew and Beth – their high level of coaching and genuine dedication to the children is exceptional. They’ve created a truly safe, supportive, and fun environment where every kid feels included and valued. My “girly girls” quickly bought into the team ethos and now look forward to every single session. They get stuck in with enthusiasm and have grown so much in confidence. This academy has been fantastic for their development, both physically and mentally. If you’re considering BJJ for your children, this is the place to go. Both my children have recently started at Blackbeard jiu jitsu. My 9 years loves it and got stuck straight in, but my 7 year old needs a little more encouraging. He can find new experiences overwhelming. Andrew and the team have been brilliant. They have been so supportive and patient with him. They are both really enjoying it.
My son absolutely loves his BJJ classes, and honestly, so do I. The school has such a positive and welcoming environment. Professor Andrew truly takes the time to teach the kids properly, making sure they learn with patience, discipline, and respect. What I appreciate the most is that he doesn’t only teach them how to defend themselves, but also how to become better people — more confident, respectful, and focused. You can really see how much he cares about the children and their development. Highly recommended!
My son Corey has been attending the teens class on Mondays. Andrew and his coaches are fantastic. The Gym is great and the other teens are brilliant. Very friendly and welcoming place. BJJ is teaching my son valuable life lessons which will help him thrive in life. Andrew’s attitude towards teaching is top class. We feel very lucky to have this academy on our doorstep in Shevington. 100% recommend!
We recently transitioned our son to Blackbeard for his Jiu Jitsu training, and the difference has been incredible! Andrew is a fantastic Coach! As a second venue we’ve tried, we really appreciate the structured, technique-driven classes. Andrew is very patient, highly skilled, and knows exactly how to keep the kids engaged while focusing on fundamentals like discipline and respect. The atmosphere is welcoming and family-friendly! Our son has shown a noticeable boost in confidence (this has shown in contact through rugby, just in 2 weeks) and he is genuinely excited to go to class. Highly recommend Black Beard to any parents looking for a top-tier BJJ program!
We signed my son up for BJJ at Blackbeards Academy to focus some of his energy forward into becoming more confident in his body and self awareness. But what we found here was much deeper than that. Andrew (and the incredible team of members and wrestlers) have built a genuine community with accountability, respect and togetherness as part of their message. Our son is getting so much from the sessions, he loves it. I have since joined and have been experiencing the benefits of the world of BJJ too, will keep up the hard work. Posted 1 year agoI recently completed the 6 weeks beginners course at Blackbeard Jiu-jitsu and absolutely loved it. The advert for the course popped up and I'd been having a bit of a tough time so I booked on just to try something new. It's the best thing I could've done. The whole team have been amazing. Really patient, informative and encouraging. I am now doing the normal classes and I look forward to training days, I can not recommend these guys enough.
Posted 1 year agoI first started my BJJ journey at the women only classes at Blackbeard. I can't lie I was nervous but Andrew made me feel welcome and assured me it was a safe environment with a good support network. The first time i walked onto the mat i met Beth (a very talented athlete) who guided me through the moves, she explained the class structure and introduced me to the members. The class consisted of friendly faces and alot of laughter whilst learning a hard combat sport. Thats when i felt at ease knowing i was going out of my comfort zone surrounded by a good group of people.Then came along the opportunity to do the Beginners course and again it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. I enjoyed it that much I am now doing the fundamental classes. Andrew is a highly skilled coach who provides constant reassurance and support. As a lone woman entering a gym I was made to feel welcome and supported from everyone on the mat and I am pleased I joined the Blackbeard journey.
Posted 1 year agoAbsolute brilliant time me and my son had on the beginners course andy and his team really made us feel welcome and at ease. My 8 year old Daughter also trains at Blackbeard Jiu Jitsu and I couldn't thank Andy and his coaches enough for make her Bjj experience the best.
Posted 1 year agoJust finished the beginners 6 week course. Obsessed is an understatement now. Andy (and beth, dan and josh) made the course super fun and knowledgeable. A wonderful, friendly atmosphere around the whole community here. Can't wait for the next session. Thanks guys!
