I recently had the pleasure of dropping in at Baem Jiu Jitsu while I was in town, and it was an incredible experience! From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed by the friendly atmosphere and the camaraderie among the students. The rolls were not only fun but also challenging. The students at Baem Jiu Jitsu are skilled and respectful, making each roll a great learning experience. It's clear that the gym fosters a culture of mutual respect and continuous growth. Was in town for the holidays and dropped in at Baem BJJ. The instruction was excellent and every single person I drilled/sparred with was super friendly. I’ve trained at many gyms and the people I met here were not only skilled and knowledgeable, but very welcoming. Would highly recommend training here based off the experience I had 🤙🏼.

I find Baem to be my favorite jiujitsu gym in the bay area. The coaches there are all very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. I felt very safe and comfortable learning there. It's great that they focus on nogi. I would recommend anyone who wants to try out bjj!
I grew up in Fremont and was visiting family for the holidays. Enjoyed training no-Gi here during vacation while away from my home gym (MatTime) in Penryn. Mike was great and very welcoming. Good instruction, good rolls, will be back again when I’m in town. 👊🏼

This place is off the chain. The classes here are big enough where there is a regular community and following, but small enough where there is capacity for customized teachings and observations to help the students here grow their skills. I am grateful to have gone here for my intro to BJJ. Denney (the owner) has demonstrated that he cares about progression of his students. His instruction is detailed-oriented, firm, and purposeful, and he is able to help tie different techniques together into the bigger picture. The rest of the staff meets that standard as well. Highly recommended.
Denny and his instructors make Jiu Jitsu fun to learn. Denny is very detail oriented and takes his time in explaining technique in detail and giving theory why somethings work better than others, etc. The team has cohesiveness and was a pleasure to roll with.

I’ve been training Jiujitsu for almost 2 decades, and I stopped in, to roll with my best friend, who started at this academy about 6 months ago. I was warmly welcomed by every single person here, and the owner was exceptionally kind to me, as well as you can see how much he appreciates every student. He even invited me back, and every student was also very kind and welcoming. The instruction was great, and he spared no details on every move he taught. The flow of moves he showed were great for beginners, as well as comprehensive enough for people like me, that have been on the mats for some time. I highly recommend this academy. Whether you are just dropping in like I did, or you become a member like my best friend. I will be coming back for more training.
Denney and co are a really cool bunch of guys. They're super passionate about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and truly care about the students and community they've built. I'm definitely hanging around with them.
I've been attending classes at Baem for about two months and it has been an incredible experience. I attended Baem Jiu Jitsu a couple months back while I was in town for the holidays. The instruction and hospitality toward newcomers is outstanding. All the instructors are clearly very knowledgeable about the art of Jiu Jitsu and are extremely receptive towards questions. High level and very technical instruction with a unique focus on the concepts and principles behind every position and technique. Denney runs a great gym environment here with a balanced mix of hobby and competitive players. Highly recommend! (Background: been training for ~7 years across multiple gyms.)
I've been here a few times and I absolutely love how the instructors teach. Their structure is dedicated to lots of drilling time and they end with positional sparring, at least for the fundamentals class. As a person who struggles with jiu jitsu, I have learned this is the most effective way for me to learn. I really enjoyed Denney's teaching. Denney not only teaches the moves but also explains on why they are effective. I highly recommend checking the gym out.
I dropped in at Baem for 2 weeks and had a great time. Denney, the instructors, and all the students are very welcoming. Denney makes it obvious he is passionate about jiu jitsu. When the instructors are teaching a move, they include the bigger picture and explain how it fits into jiu jitsu overall. They will encourage questions so there is no stigma about speaking up in class. During drilling, the instructor will walk around and give additional coaching to anyone having difficulty. Beginning of class warmups are light. I had the opportunity to roll with both newer students and higher belts. Rolls with higher belts were both tough and technical. Everyone I met had a positive attitude. This is a safe environment in which to learn and grow. I'll definitely be returning when I'm in town.
Went to a class while visiting town for the holidays and I was really blown away by not only the technique teaching but also gained some wisdom on the art of jiu jutsu. I would definitely give this gym a try is you're just starting out jiu jutsu!

Definitely recommend this jiu jitsu gym. Denney has created a really warm, relaxing, and low-pressure environment that meets you wherever you're at in terms of fitness/martial arts experience. I found jiu jitsu to be a pretty confusing martial art to learn and Denney has found a good balance between guiding students and giving them space to learn. Based on what I've seen, Denney truly connects with his students and shows a lot of care. In terms of jiu jitsu, Denney is very clear with his instruction and makes sure to include discussion of the broader concepts behind techniques, something that is super helpful for people that are newer.
I am visiting Fremont and came in for an open mat. It was a great vibe. Everyone was welcoming and I had some great rolls as well. I encountered some styles and techniques I've never seen before and I've trained in many different cities and countries. I'll definitely be coming in to check the classes out.

This place is dope to train at! Before training at Baem I had been training elsewhere for about 2 years. Denney’s style of teaching really helped me think of jiu jitsu from a different point of view and I feel I’ve improved because of it. There’s plenty of mat space and the shower onsite is really convenient for rinsing off before and after training.
What sets Baem apart from some other gyms around the area is the culture that Denney has established here. He emphasizes a safe training environment, respect for your training partners and learning over winning. There are many high level competitors here but rest assured, if you are new to bjj you won’t be thrown to the wolves. He will assess your skill set and level you up at your own pace. For an older gent like me I’ve enjoyed every step of the journey.

As a Hispanic female, I was nervous to try jiu jitsu. I took the plunge at Baem and am so happy that I did. Denney has fostered a diverse and inclusive environment at Baem to make practitioners of all colors and creed feel comfortable. Outside of learning self defense, I’ve started losing weight too. I love jiu jitsu!
I decided to drop in and train during a weeklong work trip to the Bay Area and was totally blown away by this gym. The place was super welcoming and had an easy going but energetic vibe. You could tell people were excited and Denney’s knowledge was top notch. His attention to detail is immense and his ability to give knowledge to everyone on the mats really stood out to me. Will 100% be back. No Brainer if you are local.

I had the opportunity to take a class with Black Belt Denney and he presented a well laid out structure from beginning to end. From the warmups, to technique, to sparring, finally drilling/conditioning. I enjoyed the class immensely and will definitely be back! The facility is very clean and modern.

This place is awesome for all levels. If you're just starting out, you'll find it's a very inviting and laid back environment and everyone who trains here is always very respectful of their training partners. And if you're coming in with some experience, the head coach Denney is a phenomenal teacher who brings the passion every day for the sport and for his students. The quality and amount of actual specific coaching you'll find here is pretty unusual.
I’ve been training here for a few months. Denney the main instructor, is nothing but helpful and thoughtful in the process and the way of learning jiujutsu. Everyone here is super kind and willing to help if you struggle. I love training here and look forward to training here every time i get the chance too. Culture here at this gym is everything for me. Dropped into this gym to check it out since it was so close to home - highly recommend trying out and signing up for if you are on the fence about BJJ! - As a drop in student from another academy: everyone was extremely friendly and eager to say hi! I had a wonderful no-gi class and very much enjoyed visiting this gym !! Great for people of all levels - I got to roll with plenty of people. Felt very safe and welcomed here. Gi or no-gi, Baem is solid! - The gym facilities are clean, the mat is spacious, and the location is close to lots of food/after-gym needs. They have item cubbies, good airflow, and changing areas. Genuinely, if you are on the fence about trying BJJ - this gym has a lot of open hearted and great people to train with. Hope to drop in again in the future.

I HIGHLY recommend this place for anyone wanting to learn Bjj. The students and coaches make it so easy to start, they make you feel like your part of the team from the get go. I know it can be intimidating to try it out but all it takes is one class and you’ll want to be coming to train everyday to improve your skills.

I've been attending this gym as soon as I got vaccinated, and never in my time here did I believe that Denney didn't have his students' best interests at heart. Whether you're looking to try a new martial art, learn self-defense (because almost all fights end up on the ground), or want to give your child some structure and with family-friendly competition, Baem is the place for you. However, if you're looking to become a serious competitor in both local and world-wide tournaments, Denney's training will get you where you want to be.
I trained at this gym awhile I was away from my home gym. Everything about this gym was great. Very respectful, knowledgeable and enjoyable. I felt at home very quickly while training here.
Top tier instructor who genuinely cares about his students. This school is great for all levels, from beginners to advanced. Beginners benefit from being a part of an environment that encourages consistency and personal growth. Advanced practitioners benefit from learning modern techniques and strategies that filter out what really works on the mat, and what doesn't. Everyone is incredibly friendly and welcoming to new and experienced people. I've trained and dropped in at many more gyms and still none have been able to make me feel so welcomed as well as provide me with such a high quality of instruction found. Denney doesn't just simply demonstrate a few moves each day. He teaches the mindset behind techniques and how they can be incorporated into larger game plans. To me, this makes learning Jiu Jitsu much more digestible and trains my brain cells to think more strategically about the bigger picture instead of just memorizing movements. There's kids classes, dedicated classes for stand-up, open mats, and gi and no-gi classes. The location has recently moved about 5 minutes from the first location and is MUCH bigger. There is now a huge mat space with brand new Dollamur mats, a shower, as well as a workout area with free weights, squat rack, hex bar, assault bike, battle ropes, and kettle bells. The fact that the gym has upgraded with so many additional amenities amidst a pandemic is a testament to the quality of the instruction and care Denney has towards the gym and its students.
Definitely the place to come learn jiu jitsu! The friendliness and family vibes make coming everyday so much fun. Denney really has a heart for teaching jiu jitsu, he opened his doors early if and let’s you stay extra late if you want to get some extra practice in. I would highly recommend coming here to learn jiu jitsu, or even just stop by to try one class. You won’t regret it.

I've learned many things just from them(let alone the amount of things I learned from the coach alone) and that's because the coach, Denney, has made this place to be that way. Denney is an amazing person and someone who really wants to see you grow. If you have any concerns or anything of that sort of nature just contact him and he'd be more than happy to help and accomodate you to the best of his ability. His explanations of techniques are crystal clear and breaks everything down. Honestly, I can't give justice to Denney and his academy with just words, it's really a great place.
Denney really takes the time to break down techniques in a way that a newcomer to BJJ can understand and apply effectively the same day. He has been very knowledgeable and easy to approach during all of the interactions I've had with him. The learning environment is clean, welcoming, and supportive. I have never felt in danger of injury while training with any of his students as they have always been conscious of safety. Everyone is friendly and willing to help you learn. Baem Jiu Jitsu gets two sets of five-stars from me. One set for the world-class, top-notch instruction, and another set for the very friendly environment. Denney's teaching talents are on full display, each and every class. His attention to detail is unreal, and every time I think I can't grasp a technique, I'm walked through it until I understand it. And he does this for each student. For those rare times the classes have been substituted by a different instructor, the students can rest assured knowing that anyone Denney chooses to sub for him is also a highly-qualified teacher. As for the students/training partners, everyone here is incredibly welcoming and friendly, and it's all about getting each other better, whether the goal is competition or hobby. I recommend this school to all of friends who ask me about starting a martial art, and this is where I'll continue to train as long as I'm living in Fremont.
It's a real family type environment, that doesn't have the money grabbing culture that a lot of gyms ( especially martial arts) have. Denney breaks things down into ways that are easy to digest, and the people there making coming to training fun. No Egos here, just people wanting to learn. I've always wanted to try Jiu Jitsu but every school I tried just wasn't the right fit for one reason or another. Then Baem opened up, and I look forward to training even after a 12 hour shift at work.
If you’re looking to start learning Jiu jitsu, Baem is a great place to learn. The main thing I was looking for was a safe environment with an atmosphere that encourages you to learn. Being in Fremont is a huge bonus. Each class I feel like I’m learning a language that is spoken with the body and getting a great workout. Denney the owner and instructor is a chill guy that sets the tone for the group so the whole class is cool. He communicates the technique in an easy to understand way sometimes using funny analogies. He also constantly shares his insights and thought process which to me is like learning the language from a “native speaker”. Starting a trial is as easy walking in a little early. No hassle, everything is chill. If you have an interest in learning Jiu jitsu I’d definitely encourage you to give this place a try. I’m definitely happy with what I’m learning!

TLDR: Denny is an amazing instructor and Baem Jiu Jitsu Academy is a great place to train at! I visited Baem Jiu Jitsu Academy with my wife and a friend of ours (we've all been training for over 10 years) and had a great experience. The gym was clean, the students were polite and playful, and Denny was amazing. He rolled with me and caught me in a few moves I've never seen before, and after the round I asked him about one of them. He not only showed me several variations of the move, but also in the next round he intentionally presented a situation where I could implement that move. Being able to immediately identify what an experienced (and novice) practitioner could add to their game, present the material clearly on the spot, and having them implement right away show his gift as a coach. Not all black belts are great coaches but Denny certainly is one, and his students showed it by their skills and attitudes. If you live in the area and looking for a place to train BJJ, I highly recommend checking out Baem.
Awesome instruction by Denney and great training partners. Denney teaches concepts and systems and spends lots of time with students at all levels. Even at 14 yrs of training, I always manage to learn something new from Denney and his students. The vibe is chill, making it a relaxing and fun environment to train in.
